More on yesterday's Tea Party grandstanding, political opportunism, and the anger the original organizers feel at having their rally hijacked.

So the above has become the iconic image that came out of yesterday's protests, which started with a more somber Million Vet March, and much like a high school party, when the parents are out of town, quickly devolved into just short of a riot at the White House gates.

It, of course, also attracted certain political rabble rousers and political has beens who did nothing calm the situation.

Courtesy of The New Civil Rights Movement:

Neither Sarah Palin nor Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee ever served one day in our nation’s armed forces, yet they all decided to lead a group of “hundreds” of self-proclaimed veterans — mostly Tea Party members, military service not verified — in a “Million Vet March” today that was anything but a million. Armed by and motivated with the Confederate flag, Tea Partyiers vandalized our nation’s monuments and national landmarks, because they had been closed as a result of the federal government shutdown — an act which all three not only supported, but which the two Senators actually created.

Their hypocrisy is stunning.

A few protestors took the metal barricades — dubbed “barrycades,” because in their minds the President is responsible for the GOP-led shutdown and for personally closing the national monuments and parks — and piled them, in what could be called an act of vandalism, five feet high in front of the White House gates.

The crowd of Tea Party members was so raucous and potentially violent that the National Park’s SWAT and riot police had to be called in.

Announcing the “liberation” of the national parks — opening them up to further vandalism by removing the protective barricades — former Alaska governor Sarah Palin labeled it “a matter of shutdown priorities.”

“We are here to honor our vets,” Palin cried. “You look around though and you see these barricades and you have to ask yourself is this any way that a commander in chief would show his respect, his gratitude to our military?”

Of course, actually protecting the nation’s landmarks, parks, and monuments from vandalism is the job of the Park Police — who could not do their job, resulting in the closure of the parks due to the shutdown, forced upon the nation by Senators Cruz and Lee, and their Tea Party compatriots.

Here we see Palin, Lee, and Cruz soaking up the media attention after hijacking the protest.
There is more from WPTV:

High-profile speakers with close ties to the tea party appeared at the event, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

The rally, billed as the "Million Vet March on the Memorials," drew far fewer than a million people and evolved into a protest that resembled familiar tea party events from 2009, with yellow "Don't Tread On Me" flags throughout the crowd and strong anti-Obama language from the podium and the audience.

One speaker went as far as saying the president was a Muslim and separately urged the crowd of hundreds to initiate a peaceful uprising.

"I call upon all of you to wage a second American nonviolent revolution, to use civil disobedience, and to demand that this president leave town, to get up, to put the Quran down, to get up off his knees, and to figuratively come out with his hands up," said Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch, a conservative political advocacy group.

Here Mediaite has video of the incredibly disrespectful manner in which the protesters interacted with  the police who came to protect the White House:

As we reported earlier, a protest that started at the World War II Memorial ended up in front of the White House, where protesters piled up barricades that had been used to keep people out of the memorial during the government shutdown. Police, some in riot gear, were called in, and while news reports showed some of the confrontation, raw Youtube video of the protest reveals members of the crowd heckling the officers, calling them “brown shirts,” the “Gestapo,” the “Stasi,” and opining that the unit “looks like something out of Kenya.”

One of the things the Uniformed Secret Service and other DC law enforcement organizations do for Americans is protect the White House, which includes not letting people pile up a bunch of ladders in front of the White House fence. The north side of the White House is a frequent site for protests, and the Secret Service don’t usually engage them at all unless there is a threat to the perimeter, whereas even tourists who climb onto the base of the fence to get a better view are quickly dealt with. You can protest all you want, as far as the cops are concerned, just don’t mess with the fence.

This fiasco so embarrassed the original organizers that they issued this statement:

It is our official position that the purpose of this march and the accompanying rallies is focused on the re-opening of the Veterans memorials and keeping them open. While we understand that a Constitutional republic requires the equilibrium of checks and balances to maintain the democratic process, the memorials, monuments and parks built in honor of Veterans should NEVER be closed, blocked or restricted from use. We take the official position that no government office holder shall have ability to abridge the freedom of access to these hallowed grounds.

We have, as a group, been prevented from certain groups that have piggy-backed off our grassroots efforts, to effectively create a comprehensive media message campaign. We made the mistake of trying to partner with some Washington insiders that thwarted many of our genuine concerns for keeping this apolitical and grassroots. While we support many of those groups common causes for Veterans, we do not support the manner in which they go about it. We chose instead to not incite or create panic.

We chose to listen to all Americans and all Veterans that have asked us to keep going on despite the disingenuous politicians, political action committees, talking heads on the televisions and press reports attempting to hijack the message. This included many threats of personal and political attacks on our group’s character, businesses, colleagues and our true intentions. While our hearts were heavy by the disheartening acts of a few powerful Washington elite and political extremists jumping on the opportunity to make money, we decided to stay true to our message of a non-partisan effort to assist Veterans.

You know I actually think the Million Vet March was a poorly thought out idea, but at least they were sincere in their frustration. They did not deserve to have their event hijacked by Tea Party assholes and opportunistic politicians.

Of course NOBODY deserves to have themselves associated with Sarah Palin.

Except perhaps these two.

  6. Okay, can I seriously ask what this weird-ass obsession is with the war memorials?? I'm sorry, but they are big things of concrete/marble with stuff carved in them. Whoop-dee-doo. Is this really the hill they want to die on with regard to the shutdown and its effects on our military? Is "not being able to stand directly in front of a memorial and look like I care about the military" the biggest tragedy they can conceive of from this? It's military fetishizing at its worst - obsession with the image-building symbols rather than the actual human beings who serve and suffer.

It it were up to me - and if these memorials/monuments were actually worth something - I would raze them to the ground, melt down/sell off every scrap of the damn things and send every single penny to the *actual veterans* and their families. We could start with the freshly-grieving families who are currently blocked from receiving death benefits because the Tea Partiers are too busy spouting racist rhetoric and indulging in a collective circle-jerk/photo-op in front of these memorials to be bothered with actually doing anything that helps anyone but themselves.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anonymous12:11 PM

Puck, I think the point of the memorials is to remember that a LOT of our people, mostly young, died and their families sacrificed greatly in their absence, as well as forever after their return. WWII was a major sacrifice for all involved everywhere on the planet.

I see the war memorials as a way to say: "You matter. Your death and injuries and the pain to your family matters. And we won't let people forget."

My father, whose life was totally screwed up because of his WWII disability, talked about his WWII service with pride as if it was the big accomplishment of his life---all the way until the end of his life.

I also think that those memorials serve as a reminding caution: Remember the BAD that is war. Don't do this again!

Unfortunately, some people don't get the message and keep wanting war.

Let's not let the crazies and jerks who hijack a good thing (our memorials to those who sacrificed) cast a shadow on those whose sacrifice the memorials pay tribute to.

LOVE this man so much! He's such a kind and good soul.

As the government shutdown entered its 14th day, President Barack Obama spent some time away from the front lines of the budget battles on Monday to visit Martha's Table, a D.C. nonprofit that helps low-income and homeless families. Many of those volunteering there are furloughed federal workers. The president donned an apron and helped with making the sandwiches, getting his hands dirty.

"Can I just say just in the few moments I've been here I'm feeling a little sticky," Obama said. "I think I got some PBJ on my fingers."

I have such deep respect for the President and First Lady. When, if ever, did George W. Bush or Laura Bush join real people doing real chores?

And, frankly, I cannot understand why any military veterans would even countenance demonstrating during this very troubled time. President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have done more for America's veterans than any president ever: from supporting families with parents on service abroad to showing public respect to returning dead soldiers to visiting the wounded in hospitals to helping returning soldiers with their medical issues and with their search for jobs in the private sector. What Republican president has ever done anything like that?

Any kind of "demonstration" on the streets of Washington, D.C., right now is turned against the President and the Democrats in Congress by the media and the looney right-wing politicos.

It also seems to me that American veterans should be especially insulted by the waving of Confederate flags and should avoid being associated with any groups that would do that. They fought, were wounded in body and spirit, under the American flag, not the Confederate flag.

If the national memorials are closed to the public, that is all because of Congressional Republicans. Remember, veterans, Republicans have always resisted constructing these memorials to past wars just as they repeatedly vote to cut support for the National Park Service.

    The GOP’s Backdoor Impeachment Scheme

Republicans have lost at the ballot box and the Supreme Court, so they’ve decided to nullify President Obama another way: keep his government from working, period.

The dance over the debt ceiling and the fight over the government shutdown are nothing less than impeachment on the cheap: a chance to negate the will of the majority by ostensibly placating the letter of the law. Unable to win the last two presidential elections or to persuade a Supreme Court majority that the Affordable Care Act was unconstitutional, House Republicans have arrived at a point where default and closure are the next best things. This combustible brew of race, class, and economic anxieties bubbles all too closely to the surface.

Sarah Palin Decries The Use of Vets as Props While Using Vets as Props at Million Vet March

...In the typical tea party fashion, the million vet march did not feature a million vets. It didn’t draw a million protesters, and it was protesting the government shutdown that the tea party caused.

Palin and Cruz criticized Obama for using vets as props, while the million vet march was using veterans as props by wheeling elderly veterans around so that tea partiers could touch them like children meeting Santa at the mall. If Republicans really cared about our veterans they would reopen the government, and repeal the cuts to food and healthcare programs for vets that the House Republicans passed.

If Republicans really cared about veterans, they would stop hurting them.

Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin, and Mike Lee trying to win a PR war by hiding behind veterans. The nation is about to default, but these people are worried about our national monuments.

Tea Party Republicans are fighting a battle when they’ve already lost the war.

TGIFriday's is coming out with a new sandwich. It's called a CRUZ/PALIN/RUBIO Slider. Two Latinos with some hot salsa inbetween.

Hey I heard Toad said she always like to be in the middle.

With that nose curving down, and chin curving up, Cruz is gonna have them get in a fight one of these days. And the other one with the cheap wig, or two.

isn't it about time Track and the 'NEEDY' buds show us their stories on those warrior bods? Why all the secrecy?

Thank you Gryphen. The most disgusting display of hatred racism and hypocrisy I have ever seen. Of course that bitch Palin was at the center of it. She will grab any opportunity to mewl and bleat about how much she loves "warriors" and veterans.

Those were hillbilly Teabaggers. I am sure some of them were in the service, but they are Baggers first. Lots of veterans are assholes. My father was a World War II veteran, as was every dad in the small town where I grew up. Some were assholes and some were good guys. They all went to war though, and nobody felt like they deserved special praise or attention for going.

Now of course everyone doesn't go. We have a volunteer army, and they have been treated very very badly by the likes of Dick Cheney, who sent them to hellholes for tour after tour, and military brass who still insist on ignoring PTSD and rape. The military deserves our respect and thanks, and our insistence that they be treated with respect. But that's it. The more we all join in this fetishizing and worship of "warriors", the more likely we make disgusting displays like Palin and Rafael's.

12:32 very well written and I agree with you. If we were to bring back the draft, I believe most Americans would have very strong opinions on sending our youth to war.

I am opposed to a permanent military class because of the power they can amass. A permanent military class has not worked out well for many countries.

What concerns me now is the glorification of the warrior, as though each is a god hero. That's old world mythology in the making.

And, as you said, the warriors are ripe pickings for the disgusting displays like Sarah and Raphael. Even the vets are finding it disgusting.

I'm going over to greta's blog and telling her she should be ashamed of herself for having that heartless hyena, palin, on her show after the million vet march folks clearly stated on their facebook page that the harridan and her sidekicks, snidely whiplash and the pillsbury dough boy hijacked the rally yesterday.

That's a whole bowl of word salad from the Vets right there.

I hope the Teaboogers keep raining on the Vets' parades until the Vets man up and shake them off. Vets are not gods.

I was married to a Marine for over 20 years. And I have to tell you I had to laugh when I saw the picture of this guy waving the confederate flag “THE LOSERS” and the Marine Corps Flag at the same time.
I would never equate the Marine Corps with Losers. LOL…IDIOTS.

And we know Palin is just a money whore she will spread her legs and adjust for wind flow....

  41. A matter of PRIORITIES?

    What priorities?

Food for the hungry? Cancer treatment for children? Death benefits to the families of faithful servicemen?

No! Apparently priority is being able to visit a statue or old building whenever you damned well please. Oh, and failure to abide by THE LAW.

    Schmucks.

    A couple of points:

If you hear anyone splutter, Clinton didn't close the memorials in the 1995 shutdown, you can say, no but GHW Bush did in 1990.

Is anyone else disturbed by the presence of the Oath Keepers (http://oathkeepers.org/oath/) in some of the rally pictures, with their huge black flags? and in many pics of the event you can see them in their black shirts, and some say Marshall above the logo. Wonder if they were part of the original organizing effort? In a way, it would be good if they were now disappointed and angered at Palin and the tea party bunch...

The Oath Keepers promote this pledge, taken from the last words of Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae (think about that for a second!)
    Molon Labe. http://oathkeepers.org/oath/pledge/

A couple of years back, they were linked with the Dominionists and the fundamental Christian influences at the Air Force Academy, etc.

Any one here ex or current military with some information? Mostly, I would like to stop worrying about them!

The Oath Keepers are a militia made up of far-Right ex "uniforms" (not necessarily military). The 'oath' is the oath of enlistment, which many great Democrats have taken.

    Every militia thinks it's special.

Thank you for your comment. I respect the service of each and every member of the armed forces and the public servants who protect our life and property. Many generations of my family have devoted their lives to such service.

When you open the main page and see whom they feature as their domestic enemy; and further then read the Molon Labe pledge, do you not have any concerns?

A statement was issued tonight from the original organizers of the Million Vet March.
    http://1mvetmarch.wordpress.com/

They repudiated Cruz and Palin aka The Hijackers.
UPDATED: Mon Oct 14, 2013 6:35 PM EST – The political agenda put forth by a local organizer in Washington DC was not in alignment with our message.
We feel disheartened that some would seek to hijack the narrative for political gain.
The core principle is about all Americans honoring Veterans in a peaceful and apolitical manner.
Mr. Cruz, Ms. Palin and some attendees, including political parties may have not been aware
of the goals of the marches which took place in over 60+ rallies across the nation.

The hijackers own the veterans and the veterans are for their political gain. What else is new? the media will downplay the original organizers and give credit to the hijackers.

So why didn't they kick them out? Too little, too late. You hold an event, you're responsible. Is it that difficult to dial 911?
If klan members showed up in their robes, would they do nothing?

And not ONE WORD of the Normandy Beach Memorial. Where were the protesters there?

MSNBC was all Baldy, all day, and NOT in a good way. Rachel gave a passing mention of the new "war on Christmas" book and Sarah's need to keep her mug in front of the cameras. Which IS the "reason for the treason".
They were, also too, yelling at the unpaid mounted police "This is OUR sidewalk and YOU better pick up the horse manure!
Lugheaded luddites show their disrespect for workers doing their jobs. A confederate flag at a white house with a President of Color? Seriously? Where are the burning crosses?
LOD was great as well. You know you're a losing candidate Sarah Palin's standing next to you. Does he read IM? The Palin Curse..... it LIVES!!!!

Waving a giant Confederate Battle Flag in front of the White House is a racist taunt directed toward the elected President of these United States. Could this be described as 'hate speech' and anything done?

Why does Palin dress as if she is preparing to barrel race in a small-town rodeo? Or as if she is running for "biker mama" of the year? If she wants to be taken seriously, she seriously needs a makeover.
