The internal split within the Republican party widens as the powerful pro-business Chamber of Commerce offers to help politicians battle against Tea Party challengers if they will vote to raise the debt ceiling.

Courtesy of TPM:

The letter circulated by the Chamber of Commerce urges lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling "in a timely manner and remove any threat to the full faith and credit of the United States government." It also acknowledges Republican fears over the unsustainable growth of major benefit programs such Medicare and Social Security and the need for a more business-friendly tax system.

But in a rejection of the tactics of House Speaker John Boehner, the letter urges Congress to pass first a short-term spending bill, then raise the debt ceiling, "and then return to work on these other vital issues."

That advice is being ignored by the GOP-led House.

"There is an element of the more independent, tea party coalition Republicans that, frankly, don't listen to very many people," said John Engler, the former Republican governor of Michigan and now president of the Business Roundtable, one of the groups that signed the chamber letter. "They are on a mission, often defined on the basis of their view of the world, and they aren't paying very much attention to what this means beyond maybe their own districts."

Concerned, the Chamber of Commerce is preparing to participate in political primaries, protecting friendly lawmakers from conservative challengers. "Clearly we're getting to a point where we need a Congress that's going to be productive, proactive and create a stable environment for economic growth and job creation," said Scott Reed, a Republican political consultant who is advising the chamber on its strategy.

Well this is certainly going to get a certain Arizona based political pundit's panties in a twist.

It is really only the threat of uber conservative primary challengers that is keeping a number of these Republicans in line due to the fact that they are too afraid to cross Ted Cruz and his Teabagger minions. If the Chamber of Commerce has the funds on hand to actually accomplish this tactic of funding primaries around the country that will surely inspire the Koch brothers and Heritage Action to up the ante, and we could see local elections spending multiple millions of dollars for seats in relatively small districts that were once conservative strongholds.

Which by the way might leave coffers somewhat depleted when it came time for the general election against a democratic challenger.

Gonna need some more popcorn I see.

I'm a small business owner. I can't stand the Alaska Chamber of Commerce. I refuse to have anything to do with that bunch of crooked, Tea Party Christian Tailiban fanatics that run the Alaska branch. And, the other CoC groups I've had the "pleasure" to be introduced to, aren't that much better.
Wonder how the Alaskan CoC members will like the fact that the Chamber is now trying to do damage control?

The Chamber of Commerce in Alaska wasn't like that in the 70's and 80's. It was a partying crowd back in those days - worked hard, but also had one hell of a good time!! Religion was NOT it's base and was never even talked about or suggested! Thank God!

You walk into an office today and it just isn't as open and friendly feeling as they use to be. Smiles are not as prevalent.

Could it have anything to do w/rules and laws having changed throughout the years? Is it because people don't trust each other like they use to? Is it because management pushes employees more today as to the bottom line?

At least they'll be contributing to the economy, jerk offs.

Call Speaker Boehner, ask that he allow a clean CR floor vote which would open the government.

No one talks about our shit heel supreme court....I wonder how happy Roberts is with his deciding vote for Citizens United. That's the first thing a Democratic House should repeal...day one. What else...gun control, immigration, education, jobs, infrastructure, voter suppression? The list keeps going.

    The article says, quote:
""They are on a mission, often defined on the basis of their view of the world,"

Ted Cruz and his ilk have a world view based on bronze age ancient books and a mythology of religion. THAT is THE primary source of their "world view"

Evangelical born-again Christianity informs them of everything from whom to marry, what friends they will have, and their God vs Satan doctrines, along with an apocalyptic world view of End Times, and Jesus ruling Earth.

THAT is the basis on which they make all political decisions. They won't advertise it for the most part, lest like Todd Akin or Richard Mourdoch, they become infamous for ignorance and prejudice.

I know it sounds like a broken record to keep harping on the unholy conflation of politics with militant right Christian Dominionism, but that's what Ted Cruz, $arah Palin, Louie Goobert , and their crowd are really after.

If anybody says to me "I am a born-again christian, I turn around and leave, deliberately making it obvious I think they are dangerous and stupid and definitely UNtrustworthy. I've been shafted by too many of them because I was a trusting person.

But what you describe, A.J., is exactly what Goldwater was trying to warn us about.

Unfortunately, it appears he was right.

Hey, Sarah, I know you read here. A hint: The Chamber of Commerce is an institution that progresses and protects trade, and small and large businesses. It has to do with shoring up jobs, so when you go off the deep end, remember you were FOR businesses growing before you were against them.
The Teathuglicans and Boehner have no idea the extent of damage they'll do to our country, a great deal of it irreversible. The Chamber of Commerce is at least trying to move in the right direction, but I doubt they'll make a dent with these feckless idiots.
