Only a month before Christmas Pope Francis releases statement attacking capitalism and promoting healthcare for all. Sarah Palin's wig to fly off her head in 3..2..1

Courtesy of Raw Story:

In case there was any doubt left, Pope Francis made it clear that he shares little in common with U.S. conservatives.

The pontiff released his Evangelii Gadium, or Joy of the Gospel, attacking capitalism as a form of tyranny and calling on church and political leaders to address the needs of the poor.

“As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or, for that matter, to any problems,” the pope said in the 224-page document that essentially serves as his official platform.

Pope Francis said that inequality was the root of social ills, and prayed for world leaders with more empathy and sense of social justice.

“I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor!” Pope Francis wrote. “It is vital that government leaders and financial leaders take heed and broaden their horizons, working to ensure that all citizens have dignified work, education and healthcare.”

He also launched a broadside against former President Ronald Reagan’s signature economic theory, which continues to serve as conservative Republican dogma.

“Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world,” Pope Francis wrote. “This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.”

The pope lamented that people had “calmly accepted (the) dominion” of money over themselves and society, which he said was expressed in the recent financial crisis and the continuing promotion of consumer-based economies.

“We have created new idols,” the pope wrote. “The worship of the ancient golden calf has returned in a new and ruthless guise in the idolatry of money and the dictatorship of an impersonal economy lacking a truly human purpose. The worldwide crisis affecting finance and the economy lays bare their imbalances and, above all, their lack of real concern for human beings; man is reduced to one of his needs alone: consumption.”

Way to holy fuck with the conservatives there Francis.

Damn I am finding it harder and harder to dislike this guy every day.

My question is how can Palin let this go? I mean the Pope just took a huge dump on her book, her idol Ronald Reagan, and her entire Right Wing philosophy.

Yet the last time Palin even suggested that the Pope might be too liberal she was forced to issue one of the very few apologies that we have ever heard from her.

Hang on I think I need some more popcorn.

Sarah already said that the Pope was too liberal. No, she hadn't had a chance to study the issues, because--- because she has been really really busy since March, when the Pope first assumed his office. Poor Sarah had to rely on the media for second hand reports about him. Fortunately, some of Sarah's best friends are Catholics, so they told her that the Pope was too liberal.

That was another one of those gotcha questions because there are videos of the Pope speaking all over the internet, and even people who are not Catholic have seen him speak. Sarah said that she didn't have time to do the homework required to have an opinion about the Pope, while the rest of us can read his remarks and see his speeches.

      HOMEWORK???

You actually expect her to do homework???

She never even did her homework when she was running for Vice President of the United Damn States! Why on earth would you think she might do it now, when she can just spew random nastiness over the airwaves and have people send her money?

(Come to think of it, she hasn't done homework in ANY of the jobs she's done, and just hired people to do the work for her when she couldn't handle it herself. It's sooo much easier that way, isn't it?)

What she really said is.... I have never read that Bible and have no idea of who Jesus was ( nor do I, but I still can be empathetic to others suffering unlike that greedy swindler.).

Actually, where Koch-squared are concerned, I think they go beyond just "lacking a truly human purpose".

They seemed determined to do cause as much destruction to as many of the little people as possible so that they can, in the process, squeeze a few more pennies out of the middle class and poor. They go way beyond careless and all the way to deliberately evil.

Who IS this guy, and what did they do with the Pope??

As popes go, it seems to me that he walks on "the wild side" by unashamedly professing beliefs based on compassion and concern for humanity, rejecting selfishness and greed, and I like that!

Too bad he's a misogynistic homophobe. But I do love what he says about wealth inequality. I predict Sarah Palin will either just ignore it, or find a way to distort it into something she can avoid criticizing. You know, like she did with Rush Limbaugh's "retard" comments.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Boscoe1:18 PM

It's fun to speculate but unfortunately I think it'll go down something like this:

    1. She'll completely ignore the issue
    2. All further "interviews" will include the stipulation of "no Pope questions".

I mean, c'mon. She only gets all mavericky, says exactly what she thinks and shoots from the hip when the topic won't piss off her paying customers. She *thought* she was invulnerable enough with the mouth breathers to direct some snark at the pope and actually got scared enough by the backlash to "apologize".

My money is on the coward avoiding the topic entirely, at least long enough to test the wind and see if a safe majority teabaggie concensus emerges on the subject.

I just hope he still has that bulletproof Popemobile around, because you know how the "patriots" get when anyone suggests that capitalism doesn't come directly from the Lord...

But you can guarantee that Pat Robertson is having a fit! I'm gonna have to monitor Youtube and see if anything surfaces...

Pope Francis just won't stop! He continues to sound like he actually believes in the REAL Christian message. So does this mean that people will have to throw out Atlas Shrugged, Milton Friedman, their Koch brothers TeaBagger signs ... and actually read the Bible?

Yes - the increasing elusive real Christian message. The Pope's got his work cut out for him. For example - Christian school to bullied African-American girl: Straighten your natural hair or get out.

When people study and work to create new medicine, a reward is money. A LARGE reward is money.

Science grants are a large expense.

    2. Anonymous3:06 PM

What are you talking about? NIH and NSF combined are less than 25% of the budget (less than half of the defense budget). NSF in fact gets less than 4%. How will the US remain competitive with that kind of lackluster science support? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_policy_of_the_United_States

    3. Boscoe6:45 PM

2:01pm must believe corporations are "people" because if he/she thinks that the actual PERSON who studied and worked hard to create the medicine is the one who got any of the money (besides his normal salary, or course), then he/she needs to put down the crack pipe.

The CEO and stockholders of the corporation who holds the patent on the medicine got all the money, not the hired brain who actually MADE THAT.

People don't become scientists in the hopes of making themselves rich. If that was their motivation, they'd have become lawyers or politicians instead.

Something that is amazing about this pope is the way the atheist community is impressed with his christianity. We atheists are living the life we demand from everyone else: if you act like Jesus, we will respect you for it. We won't believe in god, but kudos to you for spreading his message the way his son did. Take that, Frothy Mix.

I'm thanking him for his most recent message to the world - care for and love one another - basically UNITE, provide food, medical care and education to the poor. Which is something Republicans (who are supposedly the Christians and family oriented) have obstructed since President Obama was elected the first time.

I was raised Catholic but haven't practiced the faith since I left home and graduated from high school. Haven't attended Mass, but have gone to a couple of Catholic weddings and I'm a senior citizen now in my 70's.

But, I have to say that I like Pope Francis and this most recent message. He has totally nailed the Republicans (Teabaggers) in our country and his message couldn't have come at a better time i.e. the beginning of the holiday season.

Pope Francis is gaining so much respect throughout our world. It's going to be interesting watching what he provides as to the gays and marriage within the Church and women having higher pastoral duties.

Who knows, if the Church actually changes within the USA perhaps many 'fallen away' Catholics might return to the Church.

We need humility in the US Church and in the Catholics holding office in the U.S.Congress and state and local governments.

Some Catholics I know (in the city in which I live) are racists and actually think President Obama is Muslim - which totally blows my mind! And, these statements have actually come from college educated Republican/Catholics!!!

Hopefully, some day, they'll realize we have a great guy running our country in spite of the hate and obstruction constantly put upon him (since his first election) by many of them!

Love the fact we have President Obama leading our country along w/a Pope, who is humble, is living what he preaches in Rome, who preaches to all of us to assist the poor, the hungry, the uneducated and those not able to obtain good health care.

I suspect we are going to start seeing change - slowly but surely. People are tired of the hate, racism and greed that has been projected across the USA! It's way past time that we unite and care for others. Trust me, the poor do not enjoy being poor and many have a difficult time asking for help. The Republicans think many poor people are just ripping off the system. The Republicans, who have fought against health insurance, taken away Food Stamps and done nothing but increase their own personal wealth.

Remember, we can vote them out of office in their next election cycles...on all levels. We need folks in office that care for and represent those that actually elected them.

I'm very conservative and I like what the pope had to say. It seemed to me to be not so much bashing the market, but the excesses of it. Those with wealth and power will use it to gain advantage over competition, so there will be unequal access. Unchecked capitalism will turn into crony capitalism, which will turn into corporate fascism. That is where we are today.
