Sarah Palin apologizes concerning her remarks about the pope, blames the media. Update!

Here is what she said yesterday on her ghostwritten Facebook page:

Just to clarify my comment to Jake Tapper about Pope Francis, it was not my intention to be critical of Pope Francis. I was reminding viewers that we need to do our own homework on news subjects, and I hadn't done mine yet on the Pope's recent comments as reported by the media. Knowing full well how often the media mischaracterizes a person’s comments (especially a religious leader’s), I don’t trust them to get it right when it comes to reporting on the Vatican. I do, however, trust my many Catholic friends and family, including some excellent Catholic writers, who have since assured me that Pope Francis is as sincere and faithful a shepherd of his church as his two predecessors whom I admired. I apologize for not being clearer in my response, thus opening the door to critical media that does what it does best in ginning up controversy.

- Sarah Palin

So let me get this straight. Is it the media's fault for reporting what Pope Francis said, Palin's fault for not reading what the media reported, or the media's fault again for reporting accurately what SHE said to Tapper?

Well strike that middle one, because it is NEVER Palin's fault.

So let's see what the media reported about the Pope's remarks.

In September this is what the  Pope said:

In remarkably blunt language, Francis sought to set a new tone for the church, saying it should be a “home for all” and not a “small chapel” focused on doctrine, orthodoxy and a limited agenda of moral teachings. “It is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time,” the pope told the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a fellow Jesuit and editor in chief of La Civiltà Cattolica, the Italian Jesuit journal whose content is routinely approved by the Vatican. “The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.

“We have to find a new balance,” the pope continued, “otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.”

Okay now the Catholic church did try to soften that language a little, and even reinterpreted it to some degree, but NOBODY claimed that the media lied or misrepresented his words to my knowledge.

Then in October, it was reported that the Pope said this:

“The faith passes, so to speak, through a distiller and becomes ideology,” he said, according to Radio Vatican. “And ideology does not beckon [people]. In ideologies there is not Jesus: in his tenderness, his love, his meekness. And ideologies are rigid, always. Of every sign: rigid.

“And when a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus, he is a disciple of this attitude of thought… For this reason Jesus said to them: ‘You have taken away the key of knowledge.’ The knowledge of Jesus is transformed into an ideological and also moralistic knowledge, because these close the door with many requirements.”

“The faith becomes ideology and ideology frightens, ideology chases away the people, distances, distances the people and distances of the Church of the people,” Francis added. “But it is a serious illness, this of ideological Christians. It is an illness, but it is not new, eh?”

And again nobody claimed the media got the words wrong.

You know until Sarah Palin of course.

And this was what Palin said to Tapper that she now seems to believe was taken out of context:

"He's had some statements that to me sound kind of liberal, has taken me aback, has kind of surprised me," said Palin. But "unless I really dig deep into what his messaging is, and do my own homework, I’m not going to just trust what I hear in the media." (By the way the entire interview can be heard at the link, for the purposes of verification.)

You know, and I am sure this will shock all of you, it appears that when Palin suggests that the media has misrepresented something, what she actually means is that they reported it accurately.

Which means I assume that Jake Tapper, a man whose reporting she once singled out as accurate, now joins Katie Couric as a journalist who resorts to "gotcha questions."

How "lamestream" of him.

Update:  By the way it should be noted that the reason that authors (In this case rich people who pay ghostwriters to write their books.) go on book tours and give interviews, is to stimulate book sales, but in Palin's case her book has been dropping like a stone, seeming to accelerate with every interview that she gives. When all of this first started I believe she was in the mid fifties of Amazon book sales. As of this post she is 135.

I just posted this over on KOS and think it can help shed some light on Palin's "catholic problem" here as well.

    http://www.talk2action.org/story/2008/10/20/195730/89/

"Part of this Transformations "franchise" effort of the combined media, organizations, ministries, and businesses, has been a massive campaign to de-Catholicize Central and South America, glimpses of which can also be seen in the videos
The Transformations movement has impacted American social and governmental policy.

The idea that social transformation can be achieved through spiritual warfare, and the expulsion of demons and witchcraft, is becoming deeply embedded in social and government policy in the United States including emergency response, physical and mental health, public safety, and juvenile and adult rehabilitation.

(See Spiritual Mapping and Spiritual Warfare: Muthee and the Transformations Franchise." An article with details from the first two Transformations videos links here. )

While few are paying attention, Transformations ideology is infiltrating our day to day life in ways we fail to recognize.

The NAR and their Transformations "franchises" reach out to millions of Americans including the top levels of US government. And sometimes those people are, apparently, completely unaware of what they have stumbled into."

now the media will "gin up" a controversy, eh, Sarah? like, right. I don't think so.
She's playing to too many disparate groups, trying to please too many people....evangelicals, catholics, gangstas, and pro-life people. She can't possibly keep them all happy. So it's time to blame the media for her spreading herself too thin.

Sarah Palin is projecting again. She probably 'heard' someone say the Pope sounded like a liberal and repeated said gossip without truly doing any research about exactly what Pope Francis said. Does Sarah believe everyone is like her? Does she believe she is perfect? Does she believe she has the ethos to preach to anyone about digging deep for facts? You betcha!

Wait a minute, did she really say "unless I really dig deep into what his message is, and do my own homework"? How did she manage to get those words out of her mouth without choking on them? Digging deep would require work, and thought, and lord knows she has an aversion to both of those. If she thinks that Pope Francis is a liberal, what is she going to think if she ever does dig deep and read the New Testament and see how liberal Jesus was? But I guess when you hang out with Franklin Graham, Jerry Prevo and a witch chasing minister, doing the actual work of Jesus would seem liberal.

it's not the media who pounded on her over her comments about the pope, it was her own peeps. You can tell by the way she mentions her friends who are catholic who set her straight.

  10. The extreme right-wing Catholics have been very critical of this Pope. They are going bonkers trying to spin his very clear statements to the effect that obsessing over homosexuality and birth control is a waste of energy that could be put to better use living the Gospel.

These Catholics, like their fundamentalist Christian counterparts, equate Christianity with political conservatism, capitalism, republicanism, etc.

This is likely where Palin got the information that the Pope was saying "liberal" things, which in rwnj land, equals saying wrong things.

She was no doubt surprised to find out that many Catholics were in fact insulted by her ignorant suggestion that it was somehow automatically a problem if the Pope were saying "liberal" things.

While some of the Pee's use screen names, there are some who use the names of real people. You can google the name and place and find out where these people live, how old they are, who their relatives and neighbors are, what they do for a living, and more. I can't imagine anyone using their real name, knowing that all that information is out there. Don't they know about identity theft?

I seriously believe that a number of the "people" commenting in the Pee Pollution are Sarah and her consultants who post comments to drive the conversation. The same comment will appear over and over, telling people to check Sarah's Facebook page or referring to some article on a right wing website. It's more than just a coincidence. It's planned.

Some of the comments are so wacky that it looks like they are planted there to drive the conversation, get the fans angry and hopefully get more donations to Sarah's PAC. Yes, there is a really person with Audrey's distinctive last name living somewhere in North Carolina. She also reviewed "Our Sarah" by the Two Chucks and seemed upset over negative comments. I can't help but wonder if that's the real Audrey or if someone is using her name as their screen persona. I can think of one person who would go ballistic over negative comments, and she ain't Audrey.

8:22 That's my take on it, also, too, you Betcha!

Anyone who cares about Sarah Palin (in a positive, fan way) already knows the book is out. It's not like it has any redeeming value and someone not in the know would buy it because the word spread that it was good.

Did that make sense? Unlike the "real" books mentioned here...I, or someone else, will see a book mentioned, think it sounds intriguing and will go buy it no matter how long ago it debuted. Sarah's Fakemas book is NOT that kind of book, so all the sales she'll get are the ones she's already gotten.

Its life span is, as you say, for as long as the fans she's got went out and bought the book when it first came out. Falling rock is the only future the book's got until SarahPac buys them up to boost sales.

Pope Francis became the Pope on March 13, 2013. He has been covered on the news, and one does not have to rely on the media as a filter for his words and positions. One can see the Pope, himself, addressing people or delivering a sermon. There are YouTube videos of the Pope saying that there was nothing wrong with being gay, that the church should welcome everyone. From the moment he became the Pope, he made it clear that he was a humble man, dedicated to taking care of the poor. Lawrence O'Donnell talked to a priest who said that the Pope was following the teachings of Christ. Sarah claims to have written a book all about honoring the birth of Christ. However, it looks as if Christ's teachings are just too liberal for Sarah. Or, she hasn't had a chance to read about Christ, either. You know that the media is always garbling His message, too. Sarah hasn't had time to do her homework? What has she been doing for the last 8 months?

The Amazon 5 star reviews are priceless in their pithy satire: "Christmas is real. Not only is it real but, just as the earth was created in six literal days six thousand years ago, it is more powerful
than the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Veteran's Day, Labor day, and Memorial Day combined. It is the Voltron of Holy Days, not to be confused with
    the liberal facade of "holidays."

Thankfully, our most blessed nation above all others has a beacon to light our path: Sarah Palin. Were it not for her bravery, sacred truths about America's most sacred Holy Day would be lost. For example, did you know that Jesus performed his first miracle on the very day of His birth? After receiving the gold, frankincense, and myrrh our Baby Lord fashioned them into the world's first firearm. If you didn't know that, odds are that you've spent far too much of your life listening to what godless liberals have to say.

There are just too many unique and wonderful stories, as well as top-notch scholarship, in this magnificent tome for the ages that a review could never do justice to its superlative greatness. This is a book that truly needs to be studied out.

For the love of our Supreme Baby Lord, study it out. "

  33. Another reason to question why covering SP is useful (or perhaps covering her as if she was a real person who's words were important.)

We know her books are ghost written, we know her physical appearance is a costume, wig, twin balloons, gallons of makeup and prostitute worthy apparel. Gryphen includes this info all the time.

So WHY cover her with any seriousness?
She admitted in the Jake Tapper interview that she won't be running for office. Her book is already trending down. Why bother locking up reporters at a book signing -- didn't she want publicity??? Most likely they were locked up to prevent them from showing the small crowd.

The pee pond is partly populated by her planted comments. In other words, if she is to be covered, why do it as if she is a serious being when she is a GIANT ZERO with little or no importance? She is a fraud and everything about her is fraudulent. If the desperate MSM uses her for an audience grab, we don't have to participate.

I remember the Doonesbury cartoon depicted Bush senior as an empty Roman Legion Commander's hat. It was a way of saying, yes, he's there, but he is not important or powerful.

Perhaps we can picture SP as an empty wig and a pair of

The reason for the wig, the balloons, the cheap tacky outfits, the planted comments on her fan sites and the make believe religion is that's the image that Palin has crafted of herself. As long as she peppers her comments with some political tidbits, like tort reform threat or Obamacare or Benghazi, she can deduct the cost of her outfits, travel, new expensive hair stylist, the body guard in his pink shirt and just about everything else from her PAC as political expenses. This whole act is to get donations from her fans. They are dumb enough to think that if they give her money, she will run. She will not run for office, but she will run to the bank, but they keep giving. Sarah's act is a fund raising effort for her favorite charity, herself. As Dolly Parton says, "It takes a lot of money to look this tacky."

It's refreshing what the Pope seems to be saying; IMO, he's basically asking believers to stop worshipping the ideologies, and focus on Jesus, and allow that to soak in and not get too bogged down with the traditions of men. Could Sarah ask herself hat's wrong with being liberally charitable, kind, and loving? She paints liberals as the stereotype that many conservatives paint them as, hedonists and promiscuous, immoral, and socialists. That's her angle.

So now, she's between a rock and a hard place. She has to apologize to the Catholics, to keep her catholic dollars rolling in (like the right-to-life, Terry Schiavo Foundation, family values organizations), yet cater to the evangelical right-wing conservatives, who put her in the VP position and (who, by the way, find that some areas of Catholic doctrine are unbiblical, like, believing that Mary, can sanctify or redeem believers as well as Christ). Many protestants were killed because of the new interpretation and revelation of scripture, that had been kept out of the hands of the people and given only to the Vatican, and bishops So, historically, there is a huge schism between these two.

A self-proclaimed born-again christian puts away the old relics of tradition, beads, idols, statues, and traditional ritual and is free to worship God in a personal experiential way, without any mediators between them and God. So, there are a lot of strong differences in ideology between protestants and catholics.

Sarah, however, will try to cash in with both hands in each barrel, but it just will not work. Either she's an evangelical, or she's a Roman Catholic to her followers. The right-wing teapartiers, from the bible belt south, will want her to "refudiate" catholicism and her Catholic friends and donors will be insulted by her lackadaisical disinterest with the Pope. And she'll lose one half of her fan base in my estimation.

Meet the Newest Anti-Fracking Activist: Pope Francis \

Pope Francis has already become a favorite of progressives with his fairly open-minded statements on homosexuality and birth control. But that adoration may go into overdrive, now that the Pope has adopted a new role as an environmental crusader, too. On Monday, the Pope was photographed with environmental activists holding T-shirts with anti-fracking slogans.

The photographs were taken after a meeting in the Vatican on Monday in which the Pope spoke with a group of Argentine environmental activists to discuss fracking and water contamination. He reportedly told the group he is preparing an encyclical -- a letter addressing a part of Catholic doctrine -- about nature, humans, and environmental pollution.

In the pictures, one of the men standing with the Pope is movie director and Argentine politician Fernando 'Pino' Solanas, known for his activism against "environmental crimes" and his film "Dirty Gold" about mega-mining. In particular, Solanas is a vocal opponent of an August agreement between the Argentine government and Chevron to develop shale oil and gas, which he calls "the largest environmental disaster in the Amazon." Drilling for these resources often requires hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," which is criticized by opponents for relying on toxic fluid and posing water contamination risks.

Wait till she drops the bullshit she heard from friends (the voices in her head) and does a yahoo search to find google, then types in his name with the word "fracking" behind it. I'm no longer a Catholic, but Catholics may be lagging behind the fundamental evangelicals in numbers, there are still a great number of Catholics who think of themselves as "Christians". Sarah HAD to do this post because her sales aren't as robust as her others, and dissing a religious leader while pushing a book on "Christmas" is counterproductive.
I don't care what she thinks of this pope, but he's not "liberal" in the sense she's using it. This pope is a tad to the left of his predecessor, he's still against gay marriage, priests marrying, women becoming priests, etc etc etc. He's pro helping the poor, pro feeding the hungry, pro clothing the naked and he carries himself with humility and grace. Jesuits are more flexible and in tune with the works of Christ than other orders.
Perhaps a better approach would be a photo op with Rev Muthee. Mrs Palin?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous11:02 PM

Ironic that she would even acknowledge the pope as fundamentalists usually do not consider Catholics as 'real christians'. They disdain catholics and don't consider them to be 'saved' due to the icons and statues (false idols), worship of Mother Mary, and other ideological differences. But she has to butter up to Catholics as christians in order to increase her book sales.
