Courtesy of Politico:
Publicly, Clinton insists she’s many months away from a decision about her political future. But a shadow campaign on her behalf has nevertheless been steadily building for the better part of a year — a quiet, intensifying, improvisational effort to lay the groundwork for another White House bid.
Some of the activity has the former first lady’s tacit approval. Some involves outside groups that are operating independently, and at times in competition with one another, to prepare a final career act for the former senator and secretary of state, whose legacy as the most powerful woman in the history of American politics is already secure.
More than two dozen people in her orbit interviewed for this article described a virtual campaign in waiting — a term that itself makes some of Clinton’s supporters bristle — consisting of longtime Clinton loyalists as well as people who worked doggedly to elect her onetime rival Obama.
There are two spheres of influence. One is made up of more than a dozen Clinton staffers, loyalists and longtime friends whose advice she values the most.
The other sphere is more complex. It includes an assortment of super PACs and outside groups, all jockeying to be part of the Clinton movement but operating beyond her immediate direction and control. Still, some of these efforts could become the foundation of an eventual campaign.
The Politico article goes on it describe the rancor between these two camps, however I think that is exaggerated somewhat for dramatic effect.
Once Hillary officially announces her candidacy, everybody will fall in line and start working together immediately. Of that I have no doubt.
And when Hillary runs, she wins. Of that I have little doubt as well.
However having said that there are a few potential game changers.
One is her health. In 2016 Hillary will be 69 years old. And though she has seemed to have been in relatively good health all of these years, there was that fainting spell in 2012 (Or as the Republicans labeled it. her Benghazi fever.).
Of course there are numerous men and woman currently serving in political office who are much older, so there is no reason to think that age would be a significant factor, but it could still be a factor.
The other potential problem would be Bill.
The marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton is a rather interesting one no matter how you look at it, and Bill has certainly embarrassed the potential Presidential candidate more than a few times.
If I were a GOP operative I would have had somebody following Bill around ever since Hillary won her Senate seat. With Bill's history of past indiscretions it would be an even bet to suggest that he would have given into his urges at least a few times in the years since he served at President of the United States.
I hope I am wrong, but it would be extremely naive to not at least consider the possibility that the Republicans have something up their sleeve to humiliate and shame Hillary.
However if neither of those two realities exist then Hillary should have little difficulty strolling into the White House after the 2016 elections cycle. And that would be very good for the country indeed.
If she was to divorce Bill it would be "game on". If she stands by him then it makes her look weak. They can still be friends, as that is what it seems like they are now, but to remain in this sham of a marriage weakens her as a person and a candidate.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know the nature of her marriage?
DeleteShe's not going to divorce Bill - look at all they've been through and survived. They are probably happier now than they've ever been!
DeleteShe'll win if she runs! Republicans don't have one soul they can put up against her that has the experience she would bring to the table. The Paul guy? Chris Christie of New Jersey that is nothing more than a bully? Or, that ass from Texas that was born in Canada? Give me a friggin' break!
No way. It's none of our business what kind of marriage they have. It would be different if either of them ever campaigned on a "family values" platform (like so many lying, cheating republicans).
DeleteThey obviously care for and support each other.
Besides, what would it look like if she divorced him right before she started her presidential run?
They will remain married. Hillary is a stronger candidate with an intact marriage. Divorce would be a strike against her perceived stability, especially at this late date, so long after Bill's infamous affair and so close to the upcoming election. The public has forgiven Bill, he is a popular former President. Hillary with Bill is a more acceptable team than Hillary the 70-year-old divorced woman alone.

DeleteI'm not even considering Republicans that they can run against her but another young Democrat that can do two terms instead of one. The only thing I see Mrs. Clinton doing is running for and winning her first term with a very, very strong and competent Vice and then having the Vice run in 2020 as I don't think Hillary has it in her to do two terms. I hope that 2016 is hers because she had to step aside for Obama in 2008 and I do believe that she does deserve at least one term before she descends into her old age, but I hope she's looking for a great "backup" and it might even be a name we've never heard but hopefully that person is strong, bright and young.
@ 2:15
DeleteNo-one "stepped aside" for Barack Obama in 2008 - he was the candidate preferred by the majority of democrats
America does not need another Clinton in the whitehouse. I doubt she can win & I doubt she will be the democratic party nominee
Why should they divorce? She's known how he is since he was governor of Arkansas or even before that. It doesn't matter to her as long as she can ride his coat tails to the highest office of the land. She's much more interested in that than what he's up to. And, if you ask me, that makes her just as immoral as he. When such a grab for power is more important to someone than anything else in the world, that's worrisome.
DeleteO/T but you should write up something about the big "freeze" that is happening in the Lower 48. My goodness, people down there are acting like it's the end of the world. That being said, it's 39 and raining here. Lower 48'rs can thank us later for the big Jet Stream shift that gave them a little bit of Canadian and Alaskan love. XXOO
ReplyDeleteWe have seen enough Alaskan reality TV to know we do not want to live like Y'All do. So as far as we are concerned the Vortex can spin this bitter cold back up there where you enjoy it. Not sure what is so much fun about frostbite and frozen pipes and more....but if you enjoy a frozen ass in an Alaskan outhouse, Cheers!!!!
DeleteWe had minus 40 degree windchills this morning in Minnesota, forecast is the same for tomorrow. We are used to cold weather, not a lot to complain about. But the southern states have a legitimate beef. Their homes are not built with adequate insulation. Their water pipes run underneath their main floor just above a dirt crawl space... imagine. Some have tiny heaters or no furnace at all, single-pane windows and doors that leak cold air. Not to mention their lawns, shrubs and trees are tender and will be dead come Spring. It may not be the end of the world, and it may be kinda funny when we're used to cold weather, but it's really no joke.
DeleteHere in northwest Lower Michigan it is very cold and tomorrow will also be very cold. We're staying inside until it begins to moderate a bit - Wednesday - then we'll dig out of the snow drifts and get on with our lives. People die in conditions like this; I'm glad the weather reporters are talking about the dangers of wind chill. There are a lot of people who have never experienced these conditions and they are dangerous. Lives have been lost in the past couple of days because of the extreme cold.
DeleteI don't think that Alaskans should act smugly about any of this. We sympathize with you when it is extremely cold or stormy where you are.
And the people in the south and east are being hit hard, as "dsmre" at 2:20 pm has said. A little empathy would go a long way, you know. We are in this all together - on this little planet - swirling around in space.
Beaglemom
My young life was spent in many points in the Southern US states and then overseas in places (Norway!) that were even colder than Alaska. (Dad was in oil and that's what brought us to AK and granted, most of the family has left, but I stay, but it's nice having relatives with "bug out" houses in warm places when the going gets to rough!!) It's not too bad up here, especially in Southcentral but I've left already 3 times since September and I think Mother Nature might be telling me it's time to think about giving these old bones a full time dose of warm. For some reason Alaska has always seemed like home though and that's maybe the old adage about where you spend your formative years, say age 12-18 is what seals the deal for what feels homey. But I do hate when it gets below -10, that sucks and you really can't even have any fun outside. Hang in there folks!
DeleteA 71-year-old woman with Alzheimer's in the next county died of exposure on Thursday when she wandered into her backyard while her husband was sleeping. For her family, it WAS 'the end of the world'.
DeleteMany of the children in my inner city school district do not have proper clothing for the temperatures of 25 to 35 below zero (with wind gusts of 45+) that are predicted for tomorrow morning, which is why most of the schools in the region are closed.
Although, in my part of NY state, we are used to long cold winters with more snow than Anchorage averages, these kinds of wind chills can be extremely dangerous when you're not accustomed to them. Our temperatures dropped almost 50 degrees in less than 12 hours today, causing some roads to be closed due to black ice and many cars to end up in ditches.
I imagine that these unusually cold temperatures are also hurting any of the vegetable and fruit crops that are currently in season in the southern states.
I agree with beaglemom - I try to sympathize with people in all parts of the country, including Alaska, when weather becomes dangerous. Maybe a little support is on order, rather than mocking those of us who are trying to deal with these weather extremes without losing any more lives.
Bill Clinton is an old man with health issues. Only in GOPland is that a virile bull elephant.
ReplyDeleteIt just keeps getting uglier and uglier and NOW they're going after Rachel, bigtime! If you recall, she smacked down the Koch brothers just the other day, so now it's WAR!
ReplyDeleteConservatives Claim Rachel Maddow Not Sarah Palin Got Martin Bashir Fired From MSNBC

IM, Bill is NOT sleeping around....he's had heart issues for a long time, has had by-pass surgery and is on heart medication which creates problems sexually for a guy! I dated a guy years ago that had had two by-pass surgeries - so know it for a fact.
ReplyDeleteI hope Hillary puts off announcing she is running to the very last minute! I want her to keep those nasty Republicans off base for as long as she can! We all know that once she announces that they are already prepared to let her have it!
Don't think it's going to be much fun...for any of them!
She's a tough lady though - prepared - bright - well educated -well experienced - fast on her feet - has run once and knows what she is up against. Plus, don't think she'll take a lot of bullshit from the right! She's a tough one!!
I can hardly wait to vote for her as I did for President Obama both times!
I'll vote for Hillary because she's Bill's wife, because she's the best we've got, because I want to hear the Repubs go insane when the first Black President is followed by the first female President.
DeleteI suspect that her campaign machine is extremely prepared for a fight against the GOP, especially since they tipped their hands to a great extent back in 2008.
DeleteSince then , they've acquired no real ammunition against her besides ***Benghaziiii!!!*** which most people know is a joke.
On the other hand, she's gained some valuable experience and international respect for her work as Secretary of State. She's certainly a formidable candidate, and there seems to be no one in the GOP circus who has the stuff to win against her.
She Is crooked As Fuck, And She Lost... Good Riddance...
DeleteI find the assumption that Bill Clinton has been unfaithful since leaving the White House really tasteless. Are you also assuming that Papa Bush still has his old mistress or that George Bush is drinking again?
ReplyDeleteNothing that Bill Clinton does now or has done in the past has anything to do with his wife's accomplishments. You're falling into the GOP pit of "false equivalencies," Gryphen! Like the guy who made the recent Clinton/Palin comparison because of sexual indiscretions. There is nothing remotely similar between the two people and none of it has anything to do with Hillary Clinton. Why suddenly raise the memory of the largely trumped up impeachment charges against Bill Clinton at this point? The only possible reason to bring up that past is to discredit Hillary Clinton. I think that other Democratic women will not be happy about that. Hillary Clinton should be considered on her own terms. If she has chosen to remain married to her husband, that's just fine. It is none of anyone else's business. Talk as much as you want about Hillary Clinton's political goals, her ideas or her accomplishments but leave her private life to her. No one hounds Republicans about their spouses, do they?
Beaglemom
Thank you for saying that, and saying it well!
DeleteDitto!
DeleteHillary handled herself with dignity during some trying times in their marriage that played out in the public arena. If she runs, her name's on the ballot. She's the one whose record counts.
"Once Hillary officially announces her candidacy, everybody will fall in line and start working together immediately. Of that I have no doubt. And when Hillary runs, she wins. Of that I have little doubt as well."
ReplyDelete------------------------------------------
This is wishful thinking. Hillary's campaign skills compared to the Obama team were terrible. If she and the President (and Biden?) work together and use the strengths of each team to their advantage then yes she can win.
"If I were a GOP operative I would have had somebody following Bill around ever since Hillary won her Senate seat. With Bill's history of past indiscretions it would be an even bet to suggest that he would have given into his urges at least a few times in the years since he served at President of the United States."
---------------------------------------------
Yes, these rumors have already been circulating for years. I suspect the reaction will be ho-hum, Bill is an adulterer. We have known that for more than 20 years. If Hillary doesn't care, why should I? Times really have changed in the past 22 years.
Bill and Hillary have an unusual marriage from the standpoint of many of us. But they seem to have come through some very bad times and now regard each other with genuine respect and affection. I don't think Hillary will look like a weak "stand by your man" type, but as an intelligent, driven woman with an intelligent, driven husband, and who together have forged a relationship that works for them.
Who the guck cares if her husband cheated on her? What the guck does that have to do with anything?
ReplyDeleteNo one made a big ducking deal about reports that Cindy McCain had an affair -- AND the media totally left the fact that she was A FORMER DRUG ADDICT off the table, except when she did a woe-is-me interview for People.
Why the double standard?
You need to think a little harder and deeper naive one.
DeleteLOL. I remember back when in 2008 everybody had no doubt Hillary would win by a landslide. She didn't make it out of the primaries. We democrats don't nominate the runner-up from last election, that's a Republican thing.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever wanted to re-unite the fractured Republican base, she's your girl.
Really? Who do you see winning the presidency? I don't see any other viable competitors.
DeleteDinty is correct. You Hillary folks live in a bubble with the blinders on. And no offense to Hillary- I'm not a hater, but it aint gonna be her.
DeleteCurrently Andrew Cuomo of New York is a strong choice, Governor Martin O'Malley of Maryland is one that has gone to the left of Hillary on some important issues, Colorado Governor Brian Schweitzer may also run, another left of Hillary Candidate, who is not a northeasterner.
DeleteMy guess: O'Malley, but I am biased to Irishmen from Maryland being one myself.
At this point in the 2008 cycle (think early 2006) the only thing we knew about Obama was that he gave a great speech at the 2004 DNC and had just won the Senate seat for Illinois. At the same point in the 1992 cycle, no one knew who Bill Clinton was, and in the 1976 cycle at this point no one knew who Jimmy Carter was.
Our side does well with dark horses.
I have respect for her work as SecState and Senator from New York, but Hillary is not guaranteed a lock, and she will unite the Republican base against her.
And exactly who do you propose we put up? We really don't have another candidate on par with what Hillary has. Not in name recognition. Not in experience. Not in credentials. Not in support. She is far and away ahead of any other democratic candidate.
DeleteThe problem is we don't have ANY strong contenders EXCEPT for Mrs. Clinton. The last 4 commenters stated as much.
DeleteThat is a lovely picture of Hilary. You GO, Girl!
ReplyDeleteI agree, that photo is fabulous!
Deleteyes, it is a great photo, Hillary is a woman with confidence in herself. Hoping to call her MADAM PRESIDENT someday, suck on that sarah.........
DeleteLOL Who do you see winning in your crystal ball?
ReplyDeleteThe Clinton's marriage is probably like Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's...publicly partners yet leading separate private lives.
ReplyDeleteI think they love each other to bits and that's what has kept them together. I think they both married the most stimulating and inspiring person they'd ever met and that holds true today.
Delete9:20, sweet sentiments, all I can say is I hope you never have to grow up and get crushed by reality.
DeleteGAH! Stop with this damned Hillary is a shoe-in nonsense. Not all of us are thrilled with the assumption that she will be handed the Office of the President, or the concept that she automatically is entitled to it.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing this country needs is to slide further down the path greased by the Roman empire, where wealthy, patrician, entitled families shuffled the throne back and forth between houses. Julian or Claudian... it didn't matter to the populace at large who starved and fought in the gutters for scraps, having left decency far behind.
There are more Bushes than Clintons. Think on that. Does anybody really want dynasties of entitled twits who, assured of "name recognition", regard rulership as THEIR right? Someone can stroll into office merely because of a link by blood or marriage, whether they are competent or not?
Oh, but Hillary is intelligent and competent? Yes, so were Julius and Augustus. Their descendants (the ones who escaped Livia's murderous machinations) tended to be insane, cruel, stupid despots. Imagine starting with George W Bush and going downhill from there! Is that the America you want?
JEB signed the Proclamation for a New American Century... a globe-spanning empire ruled by an "elected" dictator and engaged in perpetual war. Many of the other signers were in Bush's Cabinet or acted as close advisors. The Democrats are no different. Hillary is a member of Doug Coe's Family, where you can do no wrong (forgiveness before the act). She is also a promoter of war and governmental power and spying and nefarious trade agreements giving even more rights to international corporations at the expense of the citizens.
NO DAMNED DYNASTIES!!!
No more Kennedys. No more Bushes. No more Clintons.
We are Americans, not some third world country.
Thank you hauksdottir. I did not have the energy to type out what you have so eloquently and perfectly described (better than I would have). No more dynasties! Absolutely.
DeleteExtra credit if you abandon the major political parties and go independent. Step outside the entire system and look in, both parties are equally pandering and full of it.
If the Republican operatives believe that digging up more of Bill's indiscretions, they don't know women voters. Most of us would work twice as hard for her election if they are stupid enough to do that!
