Liz Cheney drops out of Wyoming Senate. Cites family health concerns. Update!

Courtesy of Politico:

Liz Cheney is ending her campaign for Senate in Wyoming, the Republican announced in a statement early Monday morning.

Citing health concerns in her family, Cheney said the issues arising prompted her to end her GOP primary challenge to Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.).

“Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign. My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority,” Cheney said in the statement.

Cheney pledged to keep working for her political values despite ending the campaign.

“Phil and I want to thank the thousands of people in Wyoming and all across the country who have supported my campaign. As a mother and a patriot, I know that the work of defending freedom and protecting liberty must continue for each generation. Though this campaign stops today, my commitment to keep fighting with you and your families for the fundamental values that have made this nation and Wyoming great will never stop.”

Late Sunday night, as news that Cheney was likely to drop out of the race swirled, two GOP sources said that a recent incident involving a member of Cheney’s immediate family prompted her to reconsider the race, among other factors.

Cheney announced a primary challenge to Enzi last July and raised more than $1 million for her campaign, largely from elite Republicans close to her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney. She has consistently trailed Enzi in public polls.

Yeah okay, "family health concerns," that's a tried and true excuse for dropping out of a losing campaign.

Well this is surely good news for Wyoming as Liz Cheney appears to be just as divisive and ruthless as her old man. I mean to throw you own sister under the bus for a few more wingnut votes is cold.

And this is good news for the country because if any political dynasty needs to be stamped out before it begins it is the Cheney's.

Update: Well it appears that the family health concern is that her daughter has been diagnosed with diabetes

I don't want to be an ass, but there are plenty of people who live very productive lives with diabetes, including numerous members of the Senate and House. With today's modern treatments it is usually more of an inconvenience than a debilitating disease.

In other words my bullshit detector is going off like gangbusters.

Seriously? Judging a political candidate by her appearance? All of you flying IM monkeys need to get a clue. You are just as bad as the mental midgets and motherfuckers that obsess and snark about the appearance of any and all female politicians and the female relatives of any politician. Remember when Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton the White House dog? Sadly, none of you self proclaimed "progressives" are any better. Disgusting, disgusting people.

I'm really glad to see Ms. Cheney drop out, but the comments about her appearance are out of line. Plus it makes those making the comments look small and petty, which makes it hard to take any substantive comments seriously.

Other than Mrs. Todd Palin and her "charters of Liberty bs." People like Palin and Liz are such transparent liars and bs-ers it is sickening. I hope no one in her family is seriously ill but good riddance to her and her narcissistic campaign. Just like her father. A dick.

It seems Liz's daughter has diabetes. I wish the little girl well.
Luckily she comes from a wealthy family who probably has tony health insurance.

Isn't it wonderful how Liz doesn't want others less economically prosperous as her to have access to the same medical advantages her daughter has? And isn't it wonderful she can quit her "job" to be home with her. I'll bet she is against family leave too..

Angela, IF her daughter does have diabetes, it is the most lame excuse for dropping out of a race! Yes, diabetes is not a nice disease. There are 3 members of my family with it, one of whom is my 18 year old niece who has had it since age 10.

It is treatable enough that dropping out of a race is stupid!

Think of another excuse stupid! You're just getting creamed and we all know it!

  7. If indeed Liz Cheney does have a child with a health problem (she has five kids; the oldest is nineteen), in addition to the Cheney family blood fortune, she also has her husband's law firm benefits.

Philip Perry is a partner at Latham & Watkins LLP.

So anyone setting up a pool for how long it will take to pack up the UHaul and high-tail it back to Virginia? Even if her daughter does have diabetes (which is entirely manageable), everyone knows Wyoming doesn't have a single doctor capable to treating juvenile diabetes. Best head back to the East Coast, Lizzy!

Read this am that her youngest daughter (13) was recently diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and that her college aged daughter (19) has had some 'trouble' at college. Cheney's daughters are not children. The oldest is nearly 20 and the youngest is 13. I know someone whose child was diagnosed with diabetes at age 6. She's now 22. Her mother didn't quit her job to fawn over her. She continued to work, and her daughter had a normal childhood, managed her diabetes, and is now a productive adult. Liz Cheney is a typical Republican quitter. Republicans always play victim and blame others for their failings. In this case, Cheney used her own child as a scapegoat.

Lots of people have live fine lives with diabetes. Nonetheless it is a serious disease, and despite some familiarity with it from the news, I would want time to get up-to-speed on the issue. The best treatments often take significant lifestyle changes that take time to learm and implement. And I have no idea how her child with diabetes is responding. Some people initially don't take the news too well.

I don't like Liz Cheney's politics, I'm glad she has dropped out (sort of, although I also wouldn't have cried at watching an internal GOP fight) and I don't think the illness is the only reason she is dropping out, but I cringe at the dismissiveness of the seriousness of the disease.

    Diabetes can be quite serious.

And here's MORE lying and hypocrisy from the so called 'Family Values' GOP. They are such lying scum.

Family Values Republican Congressman Hid His Out-of-Wedlock Child and First Family

...First wife Marion Young got a $2,000-a-month lifetime alimony in exchange for her silence, so that Bill Young could play Family Values Patriarch for his Party.

Republican Congressman Bill Young was much revered in Republican circles. When he died, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and others waxed poetic about legendary “family man” Bill Young.

The Republican Congressman was awarded the Family and Freedom Award from the Christian Voice, a conservative Christian right political advocacy group and the biggest religious lobby. Indeed, the Christian Voice used to be housed at the Heritage Foundation back in the 70s and 80s.

No one mentioned that Young received this award just a year after he left his first wife and family, amid a scandalous but unreported affair that included the birth of a child. Out-of-wedlock.

No one talked about the fact that Bill Young abandoned the three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren from his first marriage to Marian Ford Young. No one even mentioned their names at his funeral on October 18, until one person took a brazen stand....

Liz made a spectacle of herself from day one. She got herself an image consultant, which didn't help her chances much when her residency was questioned. Then there was the public cat fight with her sister and sister in law, where she doubled down on her non approval of their "lifestyle" BUT she LOOOOOVES her nieces to peieces! Then there's the root of the problem, she's Liz Cheyney, which brings to mind her daddy, Dick. The Cheyney name doesn't have the same cachet it had for a few days after he became vice president.
I wish her daughter good health, Diabetes is manageable, but I doubt it's her real reason for dropping out of the race.

You did not want to come off like an ass, but man did you. I have a 8 year old son that was diagnoised with Type 1 Diabetes a little over a year ago. I guess calculating how many carbohrydrates your son eats and injecting him with a needle full of insulin is just a tad inconvientant. Except that you have to do it everytime he eats, every day, every night, for the rest of his life. Along with this he needs to check his blood sugar by pricking his fingers with a lancet and then test his blood in the modern technology called a meter. If his blood sugar is to high, just simply give him more insulin. And he its not like too much insulin can hurt him. Oh right it can, it can put him into a coma or kill him. But that is just a minor inconvience. Then also why your son is sleeping his blood sugar can drop to dangerous levels cuase he rode his bike or went for a swim earlier that day. So a parant of a type 1 diabetic religiosily wake up in the middle of the night to check their childs blood sugar. Basically the parent of a young child of a type 1 diabetic is the child's pancerous. The disease never takes a vacation and needs to be managed every minute of every day of the child's life. So Mr. Moral Compass you just made yourself a Giant ASS in my eyes.

Oh just so you know your facts, there are no known current members of the US House or Senate that are Type 1 diabetics or have a child with Type 1 diabetics. I know this as every year JDRF goes infront of congress to ask for funding for science grants to help find a cure for "this little inconvience"

Thank you for educating people about Type 1 Diabetes. In addition to what you have said Type 1 Diabetes has nothing to do with diet. That would be Type 2. I knew nothing about Type 1 until it happened to our family. You are 100% correct in saying to care for a child with Type 1 is a full-time job and worry. I pray for a cure so that my young child may wake without having to test and inject. I pray for a cure so that my child may sleep without me having to worry if she wakes up. Type 1 children have this disease for life! I am optimistic that there may be a cure in my child's lifetime and I am optimistic that the insulin AFREZZA would allow my child to inhale insulin instead of poking herself each time will be approved this year!
