Opponents of gay marriage call for an uprising in Utah because they are tired of having the homosexual agenda shoved down their throats. That all sounds kinda gay to me.

Richard Mack, tired of gay things being shoved down his throat.
Courtesy of TPM:

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association on Saturday organized a meeting in Highland, Utah to call for an uprising and to express their opposition to same-sex marriage in Utah, Fox 13 Now Salt Lake City reported.

"The people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals. The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats," Former Graham County, Ariz., Sheriff Richard Mack said at the meeting.

Mack said that Gov. Gary Herbert (R) failed the people of Utah.

"State sovereignty supercedes what this judge did," Mack said. "The Governor needs to get some courage and grip."

Cherilyn Eager, one of the event organizers, said that people need to speak out.

"We need people to stand up and speak out. We need to get noisy. We need some outrage," she said. "It is about the sheriffs now coming out to protect the people."

Mack and Eager asked meeting attendees to call their local representatives and ask them to urge clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

"The way you take back freedom in America is one county at a time. The sheriffs need to defend the county clerks in saying, 'No, we're not going to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals,'" Mack said at the meeting.

By the way the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is, and I quote, a US wingnut group that believes that sheriffs are "the highest executive authority in a county and therefore constitutionally empowered to be able to keep federal agents out of the county. Their membership consists of a staggering fourteen sheriffs, one county commissioner, and one chief of police, drawn from thirteen states (mostly southern and western)" (Courtesy of RationalWiki)

Well you knew people were going to lose their shit over Utah allowing same sex marriage, and here you have it.

So now they are going to stamp their feet and rend their clothes in public while gay couples are picking out floral designs and getting registered at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Sounds like good entertainment to me!

"The way you take back freedom in America is one county at a time".....

What kind of insane logic is that? Isn't freedom the right of all individuals? Why do these bigots think they should be the only ones entitled to have it? Sickening!

Was just going to say the same. I guess "take back freedom" really means "take away freedom".

      Silly me.

IM commenter hrh was kind enough to mention this title a few weeks ago: "Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe", John Boswell, 1995; ISBN 0-679-43228-0.

It is a very enlightening read on the subject and provides the reader with the fact that same-sex unions were quite common in many parts of the world and nothing special, really, in historical times. There were even special prayers for officiating priests to use.

The Western world, especially the US after the mid-nineteenth century, hasn't been quite so enlightened. Hopefully someday this will change.

    3. When I retrieved the book to make sure of the title, I decided to read it again. Oy! It's a lot more dense than I remember. Heavy going; that JB was a real stickler for accuracy and completeness. Still, well worth the effort.

JB points out that the reader should not be sidetracked by the voluminous footnotes. Otherwise, it'll take a month to read it!

@hrh Indeed, it is heavy reading but worth the effort for those of who want to know the truth. I did my best to avoid reading the footnotes per his instructions and did very well, much better than I did when I read another of his books on historical homosexuality. That was an intensive struggle because the footnotes were illuminating too.

I'm sure there will be naysayers that would claim Mr. Boswell had a conflict of interest in the subject because he was gay but I really think he avoided that. His writing comes across as quite objective, thoroughly researched and well-documented.

    5. Couldn't agree more re JB's objectivity. He's astonishingly meticulous and exacting in his presentation. Gawd, what a brain!

Such a loss. He died at 47. When one thinks of what more he might have accomplished.......

  2. They certainly favor (savor) that sexual imagery. I wonder why?

Geez, I can go whole days without thinking about homosexual behavior.

I am tired of the "shoving ____ down our throats" metaphor. It's really gross and violent and doesn't apply.

Why? Why is the Supreme Court caving to religion? This bullshit has to stop.

Keep your fucking religion out of government. Ever heard of separation of church and state? What part of that is it these freaks don't understand?

Congress has done nothing but drag religion right into politics for decades. Why? Why is everyone in this country so willing to bow down to these fake freaks?

How much time and how many millions of dollars have been wasted on these people spending days, weeks, months, years arguing religious bullshit that shouldn't even be a part of the discussion?

This bullshit needs to stop right now. These fakers need to be put in their place. Keep YOUR religious beliefs where they belong, in YOUR head and in YOUR church.

Same sex marriage and abortion are religious topics. Discuss them in your own god damn home or church.

I am soooo tired of this nonsense.

      @8:41.

The statement released by SCOTUS was only two lines and gave no reason for the acceptance of the hearing.

It doesn't surprise me that the question such as the overriding of a state's constitution is going to the SCOTUS.

The state has failed twice in lower courts. This is their last opportunity. And if Utah fails in it's bid to keep their discrimination because that's what their population wants, then ALL the states with that in their constitutions will fail.

Okay, I just read another report that states that instead of SCOTUS hearing the case, the order is only until the US 10th District Appeals Court can hear it.

Okay, I just read another report on this issue. It is not the SCOTUS which will be hearing the case, but rather the order is s temp stay (not really unusual) until the case can be heard by the US 10th District Appeals Court.

I still don't understand what gays having the right to marry the person they love has to do with anyone else. It doesn't affect anyon else's marriage. It doesn't force people to marry someone of the same sex.
It might 'squick' them personally, but Duck Dynasty and Honey Boo Boo and the Kardashians squick me, but I simply don't watch them (or even think about them much).
It's fine and dandy to not allow all marriages in peoples' churches. Okay, no worries, don't do it. But church law and civil law are supposed to be separate.
If someone's 'faith' is so delicate that another person having different beliefs can rock their faith, then there's something very wrong with their faith.

KanaW, you are thinking logically. The people afraid of gay rights are not. They can't see anything past their idiocy.

And even more stupid, when you ask them WHICH form of marriage they are defending, they look at you like you're nuts. Then hit them with the nine types of marriage listed in the bible and they go berserk!

      Sometimes violently.

How do you discuss with people like that? You can't. Just drive over them and ignore the bump as you do.

There's "Straight Marriages" that disgust me, but they have the same effect on my marriage as same sex marriages do. Absolutely none, other than knowing anyone who wants to get married has equal rights under the law.

This mythical "gay agenda" bullshit just feeds the ignorance.
