NBC’s Today profiled Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) on Wednesday as part of a regular feature on successful women they have dubbed “Doing it All.” The segment was described by host Savannah Guthrie as one focused on “giving advice for women on tackling today’s challenges.”
“One woman who knows them all too well is Democratic Texas state Senator Wendy Davis,” she continued.
Maria Shriver noted that Davis became a national political figure when she stood 11 hours “in her pink tennis shoes” to postpone the passage of a restriction on abortions in Texas after 20 weeks of gestation and the augmentation of health standards in clinics.
“Everybody says Wendy Davis is an overnight sensation,” Shriver observed. “Does it irritate you that people call you an overnight sensation?”
“I’m not an overnight sensation,” Davis countered. “I am the epitome of hard work and optimism.”
And that hard work and optimism are paying off in a big way right now for Wendy Davis.
Especially according to this fundraising report that came out Tuesday:
In the first fundraising report since her campaign announcement in early October, we learn today that Wendy Davis has raised a massive amount in donations from an astounding number of donors. Davis raised $12.2 million from 71,843 individuals, and received donations from every Texas county.
That's a massive amount of donors, equally important to the high amount raised. The more donors there are, the more likely it is that they will donate again and influence others to donate.
What this report means, at core, is that Davis' momentum is very real and very strong, and she's got the resources to win. No other Texas Democratic candidate for governor has raised this much money, from this many donors, so fast.
This tweet helps to explain the significance of Wendy's achievement.
# of @wendydavistexas grassroots donors staggering - at this same point in 2010 re-election campaign, Perry had 8k donors. Davis has >70k

I think things are finally starting to look up for Texas
The old white guys went too far. A lot of us have turned our backs on their way of thinking. They don’t come across as kind patriarchs, they come across as mean and selfish, wanting exalted positions they never earned, and trying to control the rest of us. I wonder if Rick Perry’s wife has been let out of the basement yet.
ReplyDeleteI know it’s OK to discuss looks here. Wendy sure does have nice thick hair, doesn’t she?
Wow! She is awesome! No MILF sex-kitten for her! She is educated, smart and honest. Her story rings true unlike
DeleteSceechin' Sarah!
Now if she runs for Gov does she lose her Senate Seat? If she loses? TX needs her one way or another! Fucked up state like Alasssska! Go WENDY!
Oh check out the difference between her daughters and screech. They aren't whining vicious little thugettes!
From Wikipedia:
Delete"Early in the 83rd Session, senators drew for terms in a post-redistricting, once-a-decade process. Davis drew a two-year term and will be up for re-election in November 2014. In March 2013, she announced her intention to run for re-election to the Senate. On October 3, 2013, she changed her mind and announced a candidacy for Texas Governor instead of re-election to the State Senate."
Sounds like it's an either-or situation.
Gryphen, check out the funny picture that Huffpost Reports uses with this article: "Nearly half of Americans Grasp The First Amendment As Well As Sarah Palin Does."
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a total idiot.
Jeremy Bird was The Director of the Barack Obama "ground game" for his re-election. He's in Texas and is working to make it a blue state! Lookin' good. Let's all help by sending a few dollars to Wendy Davis. I think she really has a chance.
ReplyDeleteI'm already one of the 70+K!
DeleteGO WENDY!!!!!!!!!
Leland 5:41...I'm with you! Last year I promised myself that if Wendy Davis committed to run for Governor of Texas, I'd donate to her campaign. I just did and it feels soooo good. Here is a GO WENDY from the state of Michigan, where unfortunately we have a GOP Governor.
DeleteWendy was a teenage single mom and chose to go to college and got a law degree from Harvard.
ReplyDeleteIf she was Sarah's daughter, she would chose "skin or hair" school.
The first sentence blew me away. I bet Wendy didn't walk around whining "look at ME!", while looking for a camera lens to hog. Only in America!
DeleteWhat, no gotcha questions? What does she read? Apparently she read LOTS of law books and college course books. Looks PLUS BRAINS, quite a combination. Look at how nicely she dresses, age appropriate and CLASSY.
ReplyDeleteAnd her daughters speak in proper sentences, dress appropriately and aren't holding fish.
DeleteAmong the bloggers I read every day, including Jess here, is a very blue, progressive Texan near Houston, TX who is funny as hell -- she covers Texas politics mostly, so, of course, she has LOTS of material available to her.
ReplyDeleteHere was her post about Wendy's upcoming appearance on the Today Show. http://www.juanitajean.com/2014/01/14/yeah-she-can-do-it/
Because of it, I tuned in that morning. Since I typically watch MSNBC and CBS to get morning news, I was appalled at how crappy The Today Show has become with, basically, continuous "fluff" pieces from one segment to the next. But I loved the Wendy interview. And I am proud to be one of her many thousands of contributors.

I'm so glad to see Maria Shriver again. (Don't watch Matt Lauer's morning show) She's one of the great interviewers. And Wendy's outlook on life, her genuine humility and hard work are inspirational. I've contributed through Act Blue to Wendy, I wish I could afford to give more to help the people I feel deserve to represent us, I keep hoping to hit the lottery, but until it happens, I'll keep giving whatever I can. The facts on her fund raising and the amount of people giving is exactly the framework that helped President Obama.
ReplyDeleteGo Wendy, we need MORE women like you in politics.
I really enjoyed that video clip and am proud to have contributed to the Davis campaign. Agree with you that Maria Shriver is a great interviewer and also a wonderful author.
