Newly elected New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio demonstrates how to effectively deal with charter schools.

Courtesy Watchdog:

After New York City spent years building a thriving charter school community, Bill Phillips, president of Northeast Charter Schools Network, says Mayor Bill de Blasio is showing how to take it down, .

“If New York City has been a national model for growing charters, I think Mayor de Blasio is laying out a blueprint for killing charter expansion,” said Phillips, whose school network serves New York and Connecticut. “This is clearly a blueprint: Do everything on your power to take away access to buildings. Facilities are almost always one of the major challenges for charters across the country.”

In New York City, 70,000 students attend charter schools and more than 50,000 are on waiting lists.

During his campaign, de Blasio clearly voiced his intention to charge rent to charter schools co-locating with district schools, sparking a protest involving about 20,000 charter school supporters.

Between the high cost of New York City real estate and a desire to keep actual school sizes relatively small, it’s common for districts to run multiple schools out of the same building. About 10 percent of co-locating schools are charters, Phillips said.

About three-quarters of New York City’s charter school students attend co-locating schools.

Last week, de Blasio’s administration pulled $210 million allotted for new charter school buildings and directed it to expanding preschool programs. He’s placed a moratorium on new charter school co-locations. And schools slated to open soon with co-locations approved by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg may see that approval taken away.

The idea of expanding charter schools is simply a conservative plan for taking funding away from public schools and undercutting education in this country.

In fact Alaska Governor Sean Parnell is so dedicated to the sabotage that he actually suggested that Alaska amend its constitution which specifically forbids the use of public funds for religious or private schools.

Thankfully so far Alaskans have given him the middle finger over this, but I have little doubt that he will continue to undermine public schools, along with his Republican cohorts, at every opportunity.

Mayor de Blasio's approach is exactly the one that every other pro-education politician needs to adopt. The way to help educate our children is to properly fund public schools and allow teachers to teach without constantly evaluating them and threatening their jobs.

I swear I am sick and tired of watching teachers getting attacked over and over again by people who clearly care nothing about eduction or the needs of our children.

RNC Chairman: Yeah, We'll Use Lewinsky Against Hillary Clinton (VIDEO)

Rand Paul won't stop talking about Bill Clinton's "predatory behavior," and that's quite alright with Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus.

Priebus said Monday on MSNBC that the Monica Lewinsky scandal is fair game when it comes to evaluating Hillary Clinton's potential presidential bid.

"I think everything's on the table," Priebus told Andrea Mitchell.

"I don't see how someone just gets a free pass on anything. I mean, especially in today's politics. So, I think we're going to have a truckload of opposition research on Hillary Clinton and some things may be old and some things might be new. But I think everything is at stake when you're talking about the leader of the free world and who we're going to give the keys to run the United States of America."

Hillary Clinton, Priebus added, "provides a lot of opportunity" for Republicans.

      Lynne -
Who would have thought they could keep coming up with new ways to do that?

If they put a fraction as much creativity and ingenuity into fixing the economy and putting people back to work as they do in finding new ways to legislate women and their lady parts, the country would be in much better shape!

It's just too bad they didn't feel it was important to examining that ignorant thing McCain had as a VP candidate in 2008!

At the very least this world would be a lot less polluted from all the shit she keeps throwing out!

Well they rounded up 20 people to say positive things about her for the video, however, commenting is disabled for the video so that reminds us that there are 350,000,080 people that don't have such positive thoughts regarding the Quitter Extraordinaire and Failed Vice Presidential Candidate and Grifter Queen.

She's 50 and she has 20 friends and only 301 views on her birthday YouTube.

Which brings me to Molly Shannon and her Sally O'Malley SNL character. This YouTube has nearly 300,000 views. Sally O'Malley is 50 and she can stretch and she can kick :-)

I am totally with you on this, Gryphen. I spent 12 years in Catholic schools, and my parents footed the bill. There was never any question that that was how it should be. If my parents wanted me to have a religious education, they paid for it, period. Not the taxpayers. Because I could have gone to the freely available secular public schools instead, if they'd wished.

PS Going to Catholic schools probably speeded up my conversion to heathenism anyway!.

There are some charter schools that do a wonderful job of educating children who don't succeed in traditional public schools. However, more and more of them are being established by for-profit companies that have no business being responsible for children's education and are only out to make a quick buck. Many of the charter schools serve only two purposes:

    1. To give the companies/organizations that run them a way to make lots of money with no accountability.

    2. To drain high-performing students, public funds and staff from the public schools so that the legislators who are in bed with the education companies can point to the public schools and say, "See...we TOLD you they don't work!"

It's a win-win for the charter school companies and a lose-lose for the students and community.

I absolutely agree with you. I would add that many of the Charters are also religious schools. That part just "isn't noticed". I voted against the Charter School law in Washington State, and now watch with interest as it is implemented. It appears it is harder to get a charter than in most states. Only one school has been fully approved so far. This school is an existing non-profit, private school specializing in children who have had trauma in their lives. They have a lot of outside funding so they can have small classes and lots of psychological support for the students. Seattle Public Schools will only be provided about 1/3 of the money/support they need to run. It really sounds like SPS is providing more support services than money, but I could be wrong. With this as number one, maybe Washington will prove that well-regulated charter schools can be a good adjunct to public ones. I consider the jury still out. There will be a total of 14 schools chartered to start next year.

Newt, Trump, Cruz, and More Heap Praise on Palin for Her 50th Birthday

The parade of conservatives who came out to wish former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a happy 50th birthday on Monday reads like a who’s who in the conservative movement of the past 15 years. Conservative icons ranging from Newt Gingrich, Condoleezza Rice, to Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX), to Duck Dynasty stars stars Phil and Si Robertson joined a cavalcade of personalities wishing Palin all the best after a half-century.

“Sarah, you’ve been a real hero to many Americans,” Gingrich said. “On your birthday, I want to urge you to take a few minutes off and realize how many friends you have all across America.”

“You’re a spectacular woman with a fantastic husband and family,” Donald Trump said.

“You don’t look a day over 40,” Phil Robertson quipped.

“Your unwavering courage and commitment to America is inspiring,” Cruz added. “You are a warrior and I couldn’t be more proud to stand beside you.”

The video features National Rifle Association member and Republican National Committee members echoing the happy birthday wishes.

The video was produced by ShePAC, a conservative political action committee with the mission of electing conservative women to political office.

I like Bill and his stance on the charter schools. Our state (GOP Governor) is pushing online learning, renting space in public schools and even building new charter schools from scratch with brand spanking new stuff paid for by the taxpayers. And cutting funding to Public Schools at the same time. And "delaying maintenance" to "Save money".
