Kalamazoo Public Safety Lt. Stacey Geik said officers were called to Cork Street Coin Laundry, 823 E. Cork St., at 4:05 p.m. on a report of a man who appeared to be intoxicated openly carrying a rifle outside of the laundromat and across the street at an Auto Zone.
Geik said police believed the man was an open carry advocate who was attempting to demonstrate his Second Amendment rights, but the possibility of the man being intoxicated prompted an officer to be dispatched to the scene to try to speak with the man.
"(The officer) asked the guy if he could talk to him and the guy went into an (expletive)-laden tirade, 'the revolution's coming, I don't have to talk to you, etcetera, etcetera,'" Geik said.
Geik said that while the man wasn't brandishing the rifle, he noted that the gun did not have a strap, which caused the man to hold the weapon in both hands and continue to "fidget" with it.
Tunji Ademodi, who works at the laundromat, said he couldn't believe when he heard the man shout obscenities at officers.
"He's just sitting there calling them all kind of pigs and F-U and this and that and grabbing himself," Ademodi said. "It was unreal."
Officers eventually convinced the man to set down his gun, upon which time it was seized. Geik said the man was informed he would have his weapon returned to him if he would agree to submit to a breathalyzer test, which he repeatedly refused.
"He was given the option to keep his rifle if he submitted to the PBT," Geik said. "He refused and basically told us to jam it.
Gee, a drunken man, carrying a loaded weapon, claiming that the revolution is coming and he does not have to respond to police requests.
What could possibly go wrong?
He was carrying his auto-matic rifle in outside an Auto-Zone. Seems appropriate. While the police are to commended, I would not be surprised is this guy could win a court battle saying there is no law that a gun owner has to sober or particularly sane.
ReplyDeleteLondon Bridges... Please! Do not give the wingnuts any ideas!
DeleteThe guy sounds like a prime candidate for Hannity to promote as his next real-american-hero.
ReplyDeleteAnd worse, he was one and a half blocks away from Milwood Elementary School (I went to school there many long years ago).

ReplyDeleteThos open-carry law will eventually backfire BIG TIME. Because:just HOW do we know that person/those people are lawaniding citizens and not thugs? (FWIW, IMHO they ARE thugs and TERRORISTS, because they ALL terrorize unsuspecting citizens!)
ReplyDeleteONE of these days... I hope, those politicians who voted these idiotic laws into being will be at the receiving end, and not some innocent bystanders!
Unfortunately, since the people who sign those laws are well liked by the insane, it's going to be politicians on the other end of the spectrum getting shot. As we've already seen.
DeleteAlso, since he refused to submit to a breathalizer test (I did not know you can do that - or at least I thought, if you refuse, they can take you to a hospital to get a blood test...) he can now claim that he was NOT intoxicated, and the cops cannot prove otherwise. Then he can file a lawsuit and say the cops took away his bun illegally...
ReplyDeleteDid you catch the part about him grabbing himself?
ReplyDelete"This is my rifle, this is my gun, one is for fighting, the other for fun" (old boot camp ditty).
DeleteI'm pretty sure he doesn't know or care which is which.
OK. Just had a brain-fart.
ReplyDeleteHow is this for an idea: Why don't some people who are AGAINST this moronic open-carry law, get together a posse and parade up and down in front of the homes of all those politicians who thought this was such a great law? I betcha they would change the law REAL fast...
I'm still trying to understand exactly what these guys think they are demonstrating, other than all the reasons why they shouldn't be allowed to own those things.
ReplyDeleteTalk about shooting yourself in the foot...

Bullied Students Sneak Thousands of Guns Into Schools

Well, in our Michigan town, a 40-ish year-old male showed up at a school board meeting with his holstered gun in plain sight. I guess in Michigan you can go about anywhere with your gun. Frankly I think that the rights of all of the others attending the meeting should matter more than the misinterpreted 2nd Amendment rights of the idiot who was too afraid to come to the meeting without his gun. Never has anything occurred at one of these meetings that could be remotely considered dangerous. Boring, frequently; annoying, sometimes; but dangerous? It seems to me that the right to assemble peacefully and to discuss issues facing the community and the schools rationally should always trump the right to brandish guns. I guess these gun-wielding lunatics just don't understand how they intimidate everyone else; or maybe they do understand and they want to intimidate the rest of us. Some great Americans they are.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
Unfortunately I think we are going to see more and more of this type of behavior as "teh crazy" has been loosed upon our society.
ReplyDeleteIt kind of baffles me as to the real purpose behind the rabid NRA supported opinion that EVERYONE must be armed. They are really pushing for just that, and of course the end result will be something like a Wild Wild West scene where everyone is dead on the ground. No one left. Seriously, what would be the point of that? Then there won't be anyone left to buy the guns. Is that what they really want? I don't get it.
I want the Australian method to happen.
Gun manufacturers make a lot of money, e.g. the military industrial complex.
DeleteIf we (countries) are not at war, how does the entrepreneurial free-marketers to profit?
Children, families, communities, simply collateral damage; the cost of during business. Truth, justice, and the American way. Profit over people of whatever hue and/or political stripe.
dowl
The NRA works with the gun industry hand in glove. The more fearful the people are, the more readily available guns are, the more places they are allowed to be carried all equals more gun sales and more money in the pockets of the NRA and the gun industry people. It's just that simple, follow the money.
DeleteSanity holds on by a thread........in some folks......or not....
ReplyDeleteI have a greater deal of respect for law enforcement after reading this. An officer had to touch this wiener's penis extender?
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't there a law against drunks and druggies carrying while not sober? Where are everyone else's rights to life, liberty and happiness in these gun rights advocates' love of the second amendment?
Taunting a laundry attendant while grabbing his crotch speaks volumes to this man's mental health.
