The father of son murdered in UCSB shooting rampage asks the question that we all should be asking.

Courtesy of Mediaite:

Speaking about his 20-year-old deceased son, Richard Martinez told the press: “Our son Chris Martinez and six others are dead. Our family has a message for every parent out there: You don’t think it will happen to your child until it does.”

After explaining how beloved his son was, and how hurtful his loss is for the family, Martinez took aim at those he believes should be held responsible for the mass shooting:

"Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about Chris’s right to live? When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say, “Stop this madness!” Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, “Not one more!”

I feel this father's pain, and share his frustration with a political system that seems unwilling to stand up to an organization that is pushing policies that put us ALL at risk.

Those idgits dog paddling in the pee pond think that this was orchestrated by the government in order to take their precious guns away. An FBI agent actually did the murders and used a depressed Elliot Rodger as their patsy? The stupidity over there BURNS.

The Sheriff was on one of the Sunday shows defending his cops saying that he was not institutionalized so therefore could legally buy weapons. However, this article says http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2638427/He-disturbed-boy-British-grandmother-Santa-Barbara-mass-killer-boy-grew-Hollywood-royalty-posted-chilling-blogs-vowing-revenge-against-women-rejected-him.html
Mr Rodger added that the family are staunchly against guns, saying he had no idea how his son got hold of a firearm.

Police did not find a history of guns, but did say Rodger 'didn't have a lot of friends,' and didn't have any girlfriends.

He was diagnosed at an earlier age with Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism meaning he had difficulties with social interaction.

Rodger was living with roommates at the Independent Living Institute in Santa Barbara, a facility that offers 'living skills instruction to help adults with disabilities to live more independently in their communities,' according to the website.

Shifman added: 'My clients’ mission in life will be to try and prevent any such tragedies from ever happening again.

'This country, this world needs to address mental illness and the ramifications from not recognizing these illnesses.'

Until the destruction personally touches someone in DC, this will continue. They feel safe there, but their families are in as much danger as the rest of us.

10:03 The difference is that the people who are upset are sane, democratic voters who try to resolve differences without violence. The raging lunatics are all for open carry and parading around with huge semi automatic weapons slung across their shoulders. So, Wayne LaPierre and the money grubbing politicians are safe for now. Their supporters are not going after them. Not to say that one of them, or a relative, might not get caught in the crossfire one of these days. Nothing will change until Republican politicians and NRA members lose their children to senseless gun violence.

As long as other people's children are the ones dying they don't really care. But then again many of them would probably not care even if their own children show down by a "man with a gun".

As long as the money keeps rolling in from the NRA and other gun organizations and gun lobbyist.

Listening to this man's grief is so painful. How horrible for him and all the parents of slain children. His anger was my anger. When will this stop?

The people who push against common sense gun laws, and the NRA, and their paid puppets, like Palin, etc., are cashing in their checks, while the innocents are being slaughtered. This slaughter could be contained, if these politicians and leaders would change their hearts, but their hearts have waxed cold, icy cold.

They can laugh and applaud jokes about killing, waterboarding, pay-back to the enemy, the robber, the intruder on their lawn, the Muslim, the perceived enemy in their fickle minds; they can make reality TV episodes that glorify AR-15 production and tweet that it's the best gift to give, but they don't hang around when it gets into the wrong hands. They hide and wait and come out of hiding after the funerals and make their stupid idiotic statements all over again, with checks in hand.

Sarah Palin can giggle and gloat her way to stardom, on the backs of these dead children with bullet holes in their bodies, but she can't possibly go to bed with a clear conscience.

If 5-year-olds getting slaughtered at Sandy Hook didn't inspire the tiniest shred of guilt or sympathy from these people (and I use that term loosley), nothing will. They value their profits far above any amount of innocent human life and will continue to fight for the elimination of all gun regulations no matter how horrific the loss of life may be.

The number of people killed by guns, either in homicides or suicides, equals nearly TEN 9/11s EVERY YEAR!

The NRA is even opposed to smart guns, that owners can use to make sure that no one but them would fire the gun. Think of the kids that would be saved from being killed by other kids, for one example. Think of the 7 year old who grows up knowing that he killed his baby sister "by accident" with the gun in the corner that of course was "not loaded". Yep, the NRA is against selling safe guns. So, the NRA does oppose selling SOME guns.

The NRA is so successful because of stupid, ignorant, racists. How many mass shootings have been committed by black people? Most are done by white upper middle class whites. To protect themselves against drones, black helicopters and when a drunk neighbor stumbles into the wrong house, or a spouse or your kid comes in at the wrong time and doesn't want to wake anyone up. Automatics and massive rounds a ammo are a staple in the homes of NRA defenders, they feel entitled, threatened and paranoid if someone dares has another concept of a sane society.

No, the NRA gets away with it because the media feels the need to present their side of the issue with equal or greater weight and because the people who support their organization vote EN BLOC for conservatives, even though most of them are, as individuals, are opposed to alot of their positions. The politicians keep taking extreme positions on gun control because people don't vote based on the issue and there's lot of money to be made by being an extreme gun rights -- "rights" -- legislator.

Literally -- LITERALLY! -- Osama bin laden could have walked into any fun shop in America and bought a small arsenal of guns because the NRA pigs blocked laws that would keep people who are on the terrorist watch list from buying guns and no one in the media held them responsible for this extremist and ridiculous position.

There have been nearly a dozen incidents in my area over the past few weeks where car or truck windows have been shot out while their owners are driving on the highway. Luckily, no one has been seriously injured or killed - yet - but the police are working furiously to catch the person or persons responsible before someone dies.

The problem they are having is that, by the time someone reports the incident, the shooter is long gone, having shot their weapon from a significant distance with no witnesses. People could very easily be killed long distance, either by the shot itself or by an accident caused by a window being shot out. Please explain to me how someone with a knife, which is designed for purposes other than killing, could cause this kind of incident.

It is obvious to everyone, with the possible exception of yourself, that guns can kill large numbers of people quickly and from a distance, something that is impossible with a knife.

As for the institutionalization of those with mental illness, many of the people who have committed mass killings have had little or no diagnosed mental illness prior to their crime. All too often a mass killer is called a 'responsible gun owner'...until they're not.

No, dumbshit. He killed 10 people. The three deaths by stabbing were just discovered yesterday and are in addition to the seven originally reported. Also, he injured seven people and to ignore that is pretty ducking shitty.

Did you know, you dumb duck, that the day before Newtown, a man in china walked into a school and stabbed a bunch of kids...all THOSE kids lived...by the way.

There is knife control in some places, try taking one to school. There was a time you couldn't travel with certain objects.

Had this guy been trained, say in the Army, it is possible he could have used the 400 rounds of ammunition in his car. He picked a small place and knew there would be plenty of targets. Had law enforcement not done so well in those first few minutes this could have been a whole different story on the streets. Three to many were shot, but 300-400 dead students and shoppers was plausible.

Gryphen, you are wrong. He killed with a knife before he shot anyone. So it wasn't access to guns that turned him into a killer. By the time he shot someone, he was already a killer times three.

And dumbshit at 11:30, he killed six not 10. Three with a knife and three with a gun. He was the 7th to die.

It is not about what turned him into a killer and no one thinks sane gun laws would end killing altogether. People have killed since people walked the earth. If the earth had no knives, cars or guns, there would still be killing.

Every other nut case would not be massacring at schools, theatres, malls and so on. The places where parents send their children and families go would be safer. Less massacres in our society.

Semi-automatics and large caches of ammo are not needed outside of war zones. Why anyone over-reacts with the fear of loosing some imagined right to have semi-automatics as widely available as they are... it is proof that there are many unreasonable and insane people in America.

This young man is a perfect example of WHY it is adamant males have their mothers in their lives whenever possible. The opposite gendered parent is often most crucial to a healthy mentality.

Teen boys are often at odds with their fathers. And teen girls are wellknown to be at frequent odds with their mothers. Both those dynamics are captured well in television because everyone experiences that.

I feel badly for this young man in California. He needs his momma to love him and teach him.

Single parents successfully raise healthy, compassionate, empathetic children all the time. And two-parent families with a healthy and loving relationship sometimes are not enough to prevent or ameliorate the devastating effects of some mental illnesses.

Your comment is one of the most asinine I have seen regarding this tragedy.

I remember thinking after Connecticut, that the "anti-gun chatter" was ridiculous. All that was proposed was strengthening of checks when purchasing guns, ie in all those unregulated gun "penis enlarging" bizarres. Everyone knew they couldn't go for anything substantial like the ban against AK 47s that WE ALREADY HAD BEFORE. So, they tried for stricter checks on gun sales, which would have included some mental health aspects. The wingers were even against THAT. But, things may be changing now that the NRA is firmly in the corner of BANNING smart guns. You know, the ones that can't kill babies and children without the owner intentionally aiming and pulling the trigger.

Yeah, we have a mental health problem in this country...which is why we need background checks and to make sure that crazy people aren't able to get guns.

Sure people get killed with knives, but how many are killed by in drive-by "knivings"? Only a complete mental midget would make your argument, but you are what you are. Do knives shoot out bullets? Can knife ammo be adjusted to explode deeply inside the body to do the maximum amount of harm? If there were people attacked with knives, do you think a politician would brag about buying a large "much needed" knife, because of all the "anti-knife chatter"? All of those children in Connecticut would not have been killed, had the murderer been armed with a knife. Do you even care that some of those children were shot 11 times each, making their bodies unrecognizable? Do you think that he would have succeeded in stabbing more than one person without the others having time to defensibly react? IIRC he shot out the protective windows to get in. Good luck doing that with a knife. Would a celebrity politician ever put "knife sight" targets over a congresswoman's name in print? Guns are the problem, and guess what, the tide is changing, it's just a matter of time before the right (correct) people are elected. https://www.momsdemandaction.org/

To kill with a knife requires very close contact which makes it more difficult, slower, less effective and much, MUCH more personal.

Killing with a gun allows the shooter to remain somewhat detached from the situation, both physically and emotionally, and large numbers of people can be killed rapidly.

There is simply NO comparison between the two.

The US is run by the NRA and a bunch of lunatic gun nuts. Maybe if some of those loonies have their family members shot, they will change their tune. This country has gone to hell. I think there should be a new classification in the DSM for lunatics that love their guns more than anything. It must make the wimps feel powerful to be able to show off their big guns, makes them real tough guys for knowing they can kill any human or animal at any time.

All that $$$ talks, especially to politicians. They do not represent ordinary people, just the wealthy who line their pockets. Strange how every last one of them leaves office as millionaires, isn't it? Time for term limits. At the very least there should be a retirement age, so the ones like little Johnny McCain can not go on TV every Sunday, calling for another invasion. I seriously think he is in the early stages of dementia, the way he keeps sticking out his tongue.

"The NRA has killed off the sportsman with their neglect and replaced him with the gun nut who spends more money on more guns, not out of a desire to feed his family, but to stave off a mythical jack-booted government bogeyman coming to take away those guns. This paranoid vision of America that the NRA sells is why we have the gun violence that we have today, because no sensible gun legislation can be passed because of what the father of one of Elliott Rodger’s victims described as “craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA.”

My son-in-law was caught on school property with a gun laying on the front seat of his truck. Because he knew the policeman he was not sited, just left to go. I would like to bring this matter to the correct anti gun lobbist in my area. This again is a case of people with killers getting away with being in position of a gun on school property. It seems it is not what you know but who. I was so saddened when I heard about the loss of the children gunned down this week not to mention all the other needless killings.

Hoping to find someone in my town who will listen and do something about this senseless killings.
