Did that shock you? Yeah, me either.
But I am willing to bet that there are a whole lot of conservative football fans who just had a very rude awakening as to the changes that are happening with football, and in the country at large.
I think the days of using homophobic slurs to insult somebody for not being athletic are definitely coming to an end.
Shocking? Hell, no! It is high time some people stop believing they have the right to judge who others love based on a text that is neither insightful or predictive of modern times. Good luck to Mr. Sams in his football career!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this on the news....and cried.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Michael!
This is a great day for America!!! As for me, I am now a St. Louis Rams fan in spirit. Odd, though, that in a red state like Missouri this came to pass. Actually, that gives me hope. Bless you, Michael Sam for being brave and honest and may you have a glorious football career and, more importantly, a wonderful life with the person you chose to love. This is everyone's right!
DeleteThat was beautiful! Congratulations to Michael Sam!
ReplyDeleteI was told about this from an American friend in Seattle. As an Anglo-American, I am so happy to see this as I know it's America's favourite game and all. What a day for him and for his partner. This is a bigger moment than I thought it was. In Britain, we haven't had this happen in our football yet.
ReplyDeleteI have asked this elsewhere but I will ask it again. Do gay marriage bigots and interracial marriage bigots also each hate interracial gay couples? Most of the reasons against mixed race marriage that I have heard from interracial marriage bigots involves children and some drivel about polluting the white race. It would appear that mixed gay marriage would render that argument moot and those particular bigots would embrace gay mixed race marriage. I am not holding my breath waiting, of course.
ReplyDeleteThey don’t have an examined life; it’s more of a gut reaction. When they talk about polluting the white race, that’s just kneejerk, and the same is true of gay unions.
DeleteAs far as polluting the white race is concerned, we’re pretty polluted already (Hi Uncle Trog). I’ve noticed that the people fussing about being white often have a bit of Native blood, and know it. They just happen to look white.
Your question is logical, applied to people who think the earth is flat and 6000 years old.
DeleteFor all those speaking hateful words against Michael Sams must be really jealous that here is a guy living the dream, and his detractors are left playing fantasy football and participating in mock drafts.
ReplyDeleteThe other side of the coin:
ReplyDeleteIn the 1970s and 80s when women were beginning to get the opportunity to play high school and collegiate sports, the homophobic slurs were about their athletic prowess.
Oh Sam the Ram
ReplyDeleteMy Sam the Ram
I sure do like that Sam the Ram
Would I like him in a boat?
Would I like him with a goat?
Will he help keep his team afloat?
I do not doubt what I just wrote.
I apologize to Dr. Seuss.
He'd even like Sam with a moose
A live one, not reduced to chili
As much discussed by Mrs. Two-Tone Willy
So here's to you, Mike Sam the Ram
And to your mom, and to your Aunt Pam
(Or whatever her name is... to the whole Sam family)
And the Sam fans of the Show-Me State
Who've shown us all that love trumps hate
From the Biscuitbarrels of D.C.
Who'll cheer you on from their TV
This talented son from old Mizzou
I hope that there are more like you!
So do we.
DeleteSadly, there's only one of YOU, Mrs TBB. You're a treasure!
Excellent!
DeleteWell Done, Mrs TBB!! I'm sure Dr Seuss would be proud.
DeleteNo fags in football
ReplyDeleteTake back our country
Go fuck yourself Butthole. Or is Creepy Chuck?
DeleteOh please. Surely you can be more hateful than that?!
DeleteSarcasm strikes again
DeletePeople respond
I continue to laugh
Bravo Mrs TBb!
ReplyDeleteWill he get invited to the White House for an overnighter?
ReplyDeleteWTF?
DeleteYou can be assured there are other gay men in the NFL. Sam was just brave enough to come out and I applaud him for doing so!
ReplyDeleteOh, there are -- there always have been. My sister-in-law lived in San Francisco during the 70s and told me that almost half of the 49ers team was gay then. She had met them personally through a gay friend.
DeleteOh, to see those locker room videos!
DeleteBrought tears to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteThat shot of the two of them kissing will become one of the iconic photos of the year. If not the decade. Fanbabulous!
ReplyDeleteWell, straight guy football fans, life is about to get a lot busier for you, explaining to us gay guys who never felt included in the sport before, what the hell it's all about. We'll bring the beer. :)
ReplyDeleteStupid allergies making my eyes all watery.
ReplyDeleteIt made me cry. So sweet.
ReplyDeleteSooner rather than later, I hope the Christians grab a clue. Welcome to America and all of that, dumb nuts. We fight for your rights to be inbred stupid. When you rein in your priests and other pedophiles, maybe God's law as you see it will catch up with reality
ReplyDeleteGrab a clue. Homosexuality between consenting adults does not equal priests and ministers raping children or evangelicals taking AIDS home to their wives.
Judge ye? No, clean up your horrific acts, before you begin to judge two loving men or women who are consenting adults.
Just get real and acknowledge that your proposed Jesus would want nothing to do with you.
So glad for Michael Sam! He earned a place in history for coming out and being awarded this honor. Imagine what a better world, more perfect union we'd have if Bigotry and Hate didn't exist.
ReplyDeleteAnd, right on cue, the nutjobs are on the radio talking about "separate but equal" shower facilities. As my nephew says, "Relax, Mr Macho Straight guy, you've been showering with gays for years.... they're just not that into you!"
Like A Gay Sonic Boom
ReplyDelete...Here’s what that embrace and kiss meant to me. It meant that Sam is not afraid and neither is Vito, his boyfriend. There are no double standards here or special exceptions. If Sam were with a girlfriend, the scene would be utterly banal, if still beautiful. It helps that they are so young – because they are not yet old enough to have their minds clogged with qualifications, warnings, worries. They just raspond as two people in love. In that moment, the hug matters more than the kiss; and the faces more than the hug. Look at Vito in the video as he waits for and absorbs the news. The anxiety, the trepidation, the concern for his partner: this is what love looks like.
Then there is the interracial aspect. The love between a black man and a white man punches a hole through the wall of racism, just as the love of a black man and a white woman or a white man and a black woman. And it punches it with love. There is way too much embedded racism in the gay community, way too much lingering homophobia among African-Americans, and way too much sexual-racial segregation all around. Breaking these impulses down is the work of culture, not law, and as such, it’s life that helps move us forward, not politics. By showing us a simple, obvious love affair across race and within gender, Vito and Michael strip us down to a deeper human identity.
It helps too that this was not a staged kiss. It was incidental to something else: a rite of passage for a football player. and that’s the best way to glimpse love – in passing. It’s always more authentic that way.

Michael Sam Jerseys Outselling NFL's No. 1 Draft Pick
ReplyDeleteJerseys for the St. Louis Rams' Michael Sam, who became the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team this weekend, are currently outselling those of the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
Outsports reported jerseys for Sam, who was the draft's 249th pick, are currently second in sales -- ahead of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who was the first overall pick to the Houston Texas, and trailing only Johnny Manziel, the Heisman Trophy-winning first-round quarterback drafted by the Cleveland Browns.
"This is unprecedented for a Day 3 pick, let alone a seventh round pick, to crack the top five rookies sold following Draft weekend," an NFL spokesperson told the news outlet.

Rams GM On Michael Sam: 'I Could Feel The Pivot In History'
The Rams' General Manager Les Snead said he had never before experienced such an emotional draft pick as when he selected the first openly gay NFL player, Michael Sam, to the team on Saturday.
"Man, was he emotional," Snead said on Sunday, according to Sports Illustrated. "I could feel it over the phone."
"I could feel the pivot in history at that moment, with that phone call," he continued.
When the St. Louis team made the pick, Sam began to tear up, and then he turned to his partner for a celebratory kiss.
Snead said he missed Sam's initial reaction, which aired on ESPN.
"I wish I could have digested it and take it all in," Snead said. "I've never been part of a decision that brought people to tears. But I couldn’t really embrace the moment, because we were so close to the end of the draft, and we had to mute the TV so we could get going on our undrafted free-agent class."
The team's chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff, and coach Jeff Fischer combed through the supportive reactions to their draft selection after they made the pick.
"It was a reminder of the power of the NFL," Demoff said, "and how we could use the power for something good."

Conservatives Complain Sam Is Treated Better For Being Gay Than Tebow Was For Being A Christian
ReplyDeleteSome conservatives have always been pretty touchy about Tim Tebow.
When the former Heisman Trophy winner took the NFL by storm a couple years ago with his late game heroics and his public displays of Christian faith, some on the right were quick to defend the quarterback from occasional mockery.
"Tebowing" was all the rage, with even fellow NFL players mimicking the quarterback's ritual of bowing on one knee to pray. A sketch on "Saturday Night Live" imagined Jesus paying Tebow a visit in the locker room.
Some didn't find the jokes too funny, and even employed cries of a double-standard. One Fox Sports columnist, for example, argued that nobody would ridicule Teboy if he practiced Islam.
That argument made a comeback this weekend after Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams to become the first openly gay player in the NFL.
DeMarcus Walker, a defensive end for the national champion Florida State Seminoles, made the comparison on Twitter on Saturday:

Right Wing Extremists Are Boycotting The NFL Because Michael Sam Was Drafted
ReplyDelete...Burkman claimed he is already mobilizing “powerful grassroots organizations in 27 of the 50 states,” as well as a “coalition of Evangelical Christian leaders from across the nation to take part in a protest if Sam is drafted. We shall exercise our First Amendment rights and shall not stop until the drafting NFL franchise cannot sell a single ticket, jersey or autographed football. In short, we shall be relentless. The NFL, like most of the rest of American business, is about to learn that when you trample the Christian community and Christian values there will be a terrible financial price to pay.”
