I think this pretty much says it all.

The funny thing to me is that these dipshits seem to believe that the message they are sending is "Look how manly I am," when in fact the message we all are receiving is "I am so fucking insecure!"

I just went to my last pancake breakfast at our local grange. I've been a member since we moved to this rural area. While I've had to keep my mouth shut on many things in order to keep good relations with neighbors, the grange has decided its okay to allow open carry. The culprit? The Republican (actually TeaParty) candidate, Casey Runyon, running against the Democratic incumbent Representative Caddy McKeown.
His brochure was full of misspellings, non sequiters and nonsense but he won the local vote by 20 some votes. When I googled him to find out a little more, turns out that he's a staunch member of the Oathkeepers and one of his claims to fame is interrupting Mark Kelly (husband of Gabby Giffords) when he was making a presentation to the Oregon Legislature advocating background checks.
I've been watching the Open Carry stories on the internet, but didn't think I'd have to deal with it here in our rural area where there are lots of guns- but they are treated as tools for bringing home food and protecting livestock from predators.
When I told the grange board that the flyers needed to reflect open carry was okay so people could make the choice to come or not - I was the bad guy. "It's an inalienable right," said one. Another said, "If they don't like it, they can just get up and leave." Which is what I did last month when this character showed up.
He's not from the neighborhood community, but his "right" to carry trumps my right to expect to attend a pancake breakfast full of small children without worrying about issues with a gun.
And, since I'm obviously the minority here, I'm not going to be having any impact. This is how we will find our freedoms narrowed - by strawberry crewcut versions of third grade bullies grown large.
Apologies for venting here, but I've been boiling since the meeting yesterday.

    1. I hope that's not the Grange on 101 south of Astoria...

The owner of the ice cream shop in our little burgh is a climate change denialist, and I think there are far too many closet wingnuts in our county, judging from the variety of campaign signs in yards and alongside the roadway.

Nope- Smith River - Reedsport. And the wingnuts here are all proudly carrying guns and the American Flag while being funded by the Koch Brothers and shouting from the rooftops about how Christian they are.
If it wasn't for the internet, and sites like IM, I would not be able to survive with my mental health intact here. Populated by 6-7th generation farmers in my little neck of the woods - all of whom hate the president because of his skin color - are generally prejudiced but can be nice as pie and really helpful as long as we never talk about politics or religion.

I long to return to the Santa Cruz Mountains where the crazy is more colorful but far less hateful than anything I've found here on the Southern Oregon Coast.

Any parent of small children who exposes them to crowds where idiots are carrying is guilty of child abuse.

Right-Wing Christians and Republican Policies Are Making America Stupid

According to a Gallup poll released last week; “Americans continue to poll more like Iranians or Nigerians than Europeans or Canadians on questions of evolution, scriptural inerrancy, the presence of angels and demons, and so forth.” The poll also revealed that 42% of Americans, obviously fundamentalist Christians, still adhere to the creationists’ assertion that Earth, the Universe, and human beings were created in their present form less than 10,000 years ago. In another study conducted for the National Science Foundation, surveys revealed that one-in-five (20% for fundamentalist morons) still believe the Sun revolves around the Earth, cannot fathom that DNA is key to identifying heredity, or that radiation, including from the Sun, has deleterious effects on the human body.

The measure of a guy's manhood is inversely proportional to the caliber, number of, and willingness to display his firearm(s).

Although I agree with the premise, it's usually not a good idea to engage "the crazy" nor make eye contact.
