Man "accidentally" shoots his pregnant girlfriend in the face during argument.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

Doctors in central Pennsylvania delivered a baby during emergency surgery on a pregnant woman shortly before she died from a shotgun wound.

Police said 25-year-old Denver Blough told them he had accidentally shot his girlfriend, 23-year-old Caressa Kovalcik, during an argument Saturday at the Windber apartment they shared with their 11-month-old son.

Kovalcik died after delivering the child she had been carrying for nine months, reported The (Johnstown) Tribune Democrat, and the baby was flown to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for additional care.

“What’s going to happen to my baby?” Blough asked state police as they took him into custody.

Blough, who worked for an asphalt company, was charged with criminal homicide, attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault charges, and other charges.

Blough claimed that he broke his 20 gauge  shotgun into two pieces and went to show his girlfriend, and that the weapon fired hitting her in the face.

That seems highly implausible to me, if not outright impossible.

I would think it more likely that he shot his girlfriend, panicked, and then broke his gun into pieces.

I think the police might be making a similar assumption which explains why he was charged with criminal homicide instead of manslaughter.

The NRA is always talking about how weapons keep us safe, but it only takes a cursory knowledge of gun deaths to recognize that the vast number of people shot in this country are shot in similar domestic squabbles, where one person becomes angry and there is easy access to a weapon.

And now this poor child has been robbed of both their mother, who is now dead, and their father, who may not get out of prison until the child is an adult.

If only the 25 year old mommy, swollen with child and probably still nursing the 11 month old, had a gun...I just can't.

  5. Another senseless tragedy. However, at the top of the story it talks about their 11 month old, and the full term baby...makes me think of all the people who claim Trip and Trigg cannot have come from the same mother.

I was engaged many years ago to a man whose sister-in-law was pregnant with twins. She had gotten pregnant with the twins almost immediately after giving birth to her first baby girl. The twins came early so she ended up with three babies under a year old.

Then her husband decided he didn't want to play anymore and left her.

Having already broken off my engagement, I breathed a huge sigh of relief because the two brothers were wayyyy too much alike for my peace of mind!

  6. So he claimed he was arguing with his girlfriend but for some reason he had to go get a shotgun to "show" her?

Two babies are motherless, while another mad as hell idiot with a gun has destroyed the world of a lot of people. Sounds like a normal day in America, but it doesn't numb me and I hope none of us get used to it.

Time to head to Japan when a Surgeon General can't be confirmed because he says gun violence in this country is a public health issue. I don't know . . . . five hundred children and teens a year dead and almost eight thousand injured from guns sounds like a public health issue to me.

    1. angela. according to the recognized authorities on this subject (NRA) gun deaths are god's will (and thus unavoidable) while abortions are the work of Satan.

Don't you understand that thousands of dead and injured children don't trump some angry, beer-bellied, high school dropout's right to carry an AR-15 into the local fast food joint?

      Are you Un-Amurkan or something???

"Man "accidentally" shoots his pregnant girlfriend"

Thus explaining why the unofficial theme song for the NRA is "Accidents Will Happen" by the mega-talented Mr. Elvis Costello.

It is impossible for his account to have occurred a shotgun is a two piece machine, The shell ( projectile ) goes in the fore section, The firing mechanism ( trigger, firing pin ) goes in the aft section, unless the fore and aft are connected together the machine is useless.

two kids now - they had an 11 month old. Sounds like they werein need of some condoms. .
The fetus needed a gun and a periscope and he'd be ok.

  11. Meanwhile. the NRA has reversed their earlier criticism of Texass open carry demonstrators mincing around with weapons in restaurants and home improvement centers.

I for one would like all these stories to be front page news every friggin night....all over this country these stinkin guns in the home of "legal" assholes are just too much to bare. How about a "war on guns"!!!!!! Democrats needs to run on gun rights...I bet they would have pretty much the entire female voting public.

Quick question here. How many lives did a privately owned gun save that day? We know that a privately owned gun ended at least one life that day and made orphans out of two babies. The question isn't just about how many people are killed, because we know it's WAY TOO MANY. But they are always telling us that they need the gun for protection. So, let's start putting them together in a side by side graph. The sad part is that I can't find any records of anyone being saved by a privately owned gun most days. Some innocent killed? No problemo...

Occasionally there is a rerun of a store owner on Law and Order who successfully uses a gun. You make a good point. It would be interesting to do a discovery of any group going to restaurants with concealed or openly carried assault rifles to discover how many of them were held at gunpoint at a buffet, buying another gun or if a government official came to confiscate their s'more ingredients.

  14. There should be a law against allowing people who work with polluting substances like asphalt, cement dust, toxic solvents, toxic weedkillers, toxic chemicals and metals, from purchasing or owning guns unless they pass a test that evaluates whether they are brain damaged or not.

Oh, ha, ha, THAT'LL never happen. In fact, I believe the RWNJs actually WANT brain damaged people to own as many guns as they can afford to buy or steal.
