For the sake of argument let’s say that everything Snowden stole pertaining to possible illegal activity by the NSA is 100% legit and every last bit of it is proven to be unconstitutional. Then yes, I would agree that he’s a patriot and a hero for risking everything to take that stand.
Except that’s not all he stole, nor is it all that he’s leaked.
Telling a newspaper in China that the United States government spied on Chinese computers isn’t “revealing unconstitutional surveillance of Americans” and leaking that classified information is illegal.
Writing an “open letter” trying to get Brazil to grant him political asylum by offering to help Brazil investigate United States surveillance, because Snowden leaked information about the U.S. spying on the Brazilian government, isn’t “standing up for the Constitutional rights of Americans.”
Saying that the NSA is “in bed” with Germany and other governments, working together on elaborate surveillance programs, isn’t “protecting the freedom of American citizens.”
Leaking documents showing that Sweden has helped the United States spy on Russia isn’t “being a patriot.”
Producing documents that reveal details on how the NSA gets some of its intelligence on the location of dangerous terrorists isn’t “being a passionate supporter of our Bill of Rights.”
Revealing that the United States uses cyber-attacks as an “intelligence weapon” for overseas targets has nothing to do with our Constitution.
Neither did producing documents that showed the British government set up surveillance of G20 delegates and phones during the G20 summit in 2009.
Last I checked, countries in Latin America weren’t protected by our Constitution either – yet Snowden still leaked information about how the NSA listens in on phone calls in many of those nations.
There is actually quite a bit more over at Forward Progressives, but I think you get the drift.
IF Snowden had simply revealed the domestic spying that was going on in this country, then the argument concerning his patriotism, even if he fled the country, might seem valid.
But as the above post lays out Snowden reveaed information that undercuts our ability to protect ourselves from cyber attacks, our ability to gather intelligence, and our reputation with our allies.
Now recent information suggests that Snowden may have come to the attention of Moscow six years ago.
I know there are still some arguing that he is a misunderstood whistle blower who is being smeared by the United States, but most of the evidence I have seen suggests otherwise.
I personally think he's a dick.
ReplyDeleteHe is. The AIP idiots (like Sarah and Tawd) will support him to the nth.
DeleteLimp dick. Tawd tiny limp one.
DeleteI said it from the very beginning of this whole Snowjob situation that he was scum of the lowest level, that he was being paid by someone to sabotage President Obama, and to jeopardize the security of the US so that it would open us up to an attack that would be blamed on President Obama, and also to do all he could to turn other countries against the US and try to isolate the US on the world stage. He is VERY anti-Obama, along with his fuckwad friend Greenwald, and is totally in Russia's pocket. He said straight up that he had been trained as a 'spy', so that's no big revelation. But he's a more than that. Or should I say worse than that. He's done DAMAGE to an infrastructure that has been in place for DECADES, compromising our capabilities to fend off and/or anticipate incoming attacks to us, or to our friends in other countries. He and his cohorts have exposed this country in a way that is not only treasonous, but treacherous and despicable. I hope he stays stuck in Russia forever until they decide he isn't useful anymore and blow his ass up.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, 4:50! Not sure about the Obama connection (i.e. that he did it damage our President), but definitely agree that he did it to damage the US, because he has not damaged any other EASTERN BLOCK country.
DeleteIf Snowden was really a spy as he says he was, he's also quite the hypocrite since he's now befriending countries he had spied on prior to his treasonous behavior. He's no hero, that's why he ran away from the U.S.
Delete4:50 yep yep yep!
DeleteBut it's not working. They look like a couple of idiotic media whores.
First snowden bragged that the files that he stole from the US and carried into other nations (when he believed he was some kind of hero) were super-encrypted (of course he's the master THOR! Nobody can break his code because he was billy-badass. I thought, Oooo plzzzzz!
snowden and greenwald are two conceited liars. Initially snowden wanted to be anonymous. greenwald was doing the-slow-Chinese-water-torture-drip" snowden's shit (info) to the media, here come snowden and snatches away the limelight. he thought why should greenwald get all the limelight?*it's mine shit." Now he profess' (snowden) during his TV interview that were're stupid if believed that he took the files to China and russia.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Edward Snowden is working for the Kock brothers.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't surprise me at all. Their origins are certainly murky - the grandfather who made all that money from Stalin and then came back to "fight" communism . . . .
DeleteBeaglemom
You folks are fucking clueless lemmings.
ReplyDeleteNo. That would be you.
DeleteHi Creepy Jr!
DeleteCreepy wishes his infamous sister could make him rich. Yes ... as to be expected ... it runs in the family ... he is that dumb.
DeleteIs that why you quit your job, Chuckie Jr.? Your sister gong to run and you're on the grifting payroll? Good luck with that, x-tian, you did your now wife in a coat closet. Ooooh la la, do the Palins love them some sex. You're an IDIOT.
DeleteYes, we are clueless about the Secrets of the Palins and Heaths and their unlisted babies and their Medical Records. Chucktard Jr cheated on his wife while at work and abandoned his wife and 2 kids. How is that for a clueless non-christian.
DeleteFull time work for sis now?

So how's the little IRS problem coming along?
http://conservatives4palin.com/2014/01/chuck-heath-jr-irs-harassed-dad-six-times-since-2008.html
Because yeah, the rest of the world didn't really need to know that the United States is spying on every person in the world and has them all under digital surveillance 24/7. You're not seeing any other country calling Snowden names.
ReplyDeleteIn a way it's funny, because oh HELL yeah we do, in a way sad. At least he didn't open fire and massive kill people.
DeleteAll countries are spying on each other and it has been going on for years, 5:35 P.M. Russia knows just as much as does the USA - China and Japan too!
DeleteAnd your credit card company has known more about you than you would ever want known. That's the digital world we live in now - unfortunately. If the US government is gathering metadata and, by doing that, is able to thwart terrorists here and abroad, that's fine with me. It sure beats invading countries and killing and mutilating thousands upon thousands of people.
DeleteIn my view, Snowden is a traitor and the Wikileaks guy is not any better, but he's someone else's problem. I grew up in the aftermath of WWII and understood all about the importance of people saving lives by actually keeping secrets.
And for Snowden to seek asylum in Russia is a joke. Russia has watched its citizens very, very closely for generations. He's their pawn now. I do not think that the American media should give him a platform from which to spout his nonsense.
Beaglemom
I have come to the conclusion quite some time ago that he is a spy. My reason: he only revealed things that injured the US. He did not reveal ANYTHING that goes against Russia or against China. (Same, by the way with Wikileaks - they only leaked damaging information against the WEST, but nothing damaging against the former East Block countries...) makes you go hmmm...
ReplyDeleteHe embarrassed the Australian Government, caught spying on the Indonesians to the point of tapping the president's wife's cell phone. Served them right.
DeleteIf you're going to spy it's probably best to STFU about it.
6:53 : Again, in this case, he dissed a WESTERN ally - NOT a (former) Soviet ally...
DeleteI don't know the answer to the question about whether he is a spy or not. I did, however, watch the recent NBC interview. My conclusion from that is that he is an arrogant, supercilious, mouthy little prick.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing would be for Snoden to come to America and stand up for himself at a trial. If he is disillusioned with his former country or he doesn't feel up to standing up it is his call what all he will attempt the next 50-70 years of the life he has left.
DeleteIf he doesn't care about whether he is a spy or not. I don't really either. For now I would go with he is a traitor or likely a spy.
I agree 5:56. He's someone who thinks...."he's a legend in his own mind."
DeleteSo much of what he released is harmful to the US. How is that patriotic? He's just full of himself isn't he?
The US is NOT exempt from this....PERIOD!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Snowden the man liberals initially loved?
ReplyDeleteNames please. I know not the liberals that loved him, Would like to know. Thank you.
DeleteTwo important life lessons. Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. We are all saints and sinners.
ReplyDeleteduh
DeleteIf his convictions are so strong why won't he fight here instead of taking shelter from the worlds demagogue? MLK started his civil disobedience from a jail call. I guess that's to much for such a person with such strong convictions like Snowden.
ReplyDeleteThe minute he left this country he became a traitor and a coward.
DeleteInteresting read:

Gee, he's asking Brazil for asylum now? Are they treating you well in Russia? How's the Borst? Did you visit Bullwinkle land?
ReplyDeleteThat shirt's looking awful baggy and your complexion is all pasty white. You should ask Sarah what country to ask asylum from. She'd suggest Hawaii, she went to school there, allegedly, and came back because the natives had better tans than she did.
I don't understand why he doesn't just skip on over to Sarah's back porch. Dont ya know she could talk with Putin's head to tie up any loose ends about him changing continents.
DeleteHe ran off to Russia...Let him rot there.
ReplyDeleteM from MD
There has been something fishy about him from the start. And then I watched the interview, and thought, "hmm, a little sure of yourself, aren't you?" Seems smarmy and I am just not buying his line that he works for our government by being a patriot. I wish I could find an article I read about a few months ago dealing with him and Wikipedia and the timeline of his original releases. Seems like he was in cahoots with the owners that were losing big bucks and they wanted to bring in some cash flow. Will have to look for it.
ReplyDeleteHe seems swarmy. I try not to hold that against him because it may just be how he was born. He clearly doesn't want to be treated like anyone else would be in his situation. His arrogance is appalling.
DeleteI don't know what all he did or what dangers or any of that. He is an American citizen who is in hot water and doesn't want to face the music. I know our prisons have many, many innocent people who are doing time. Many of them tried to get a fair trial and it didn't work out. I wish our country was perfect and Snowden would come back and have a fair trial. As it is we will never know many things.
As far as Snowden is concerned, he is blessed to have Putins and the Russian peoples blessings. So it is.
Very o/t but we deserve some 'good' news once in a while after we have to digest the daily news.

He lost all credibility with that Putin call-in show stunt, which most of the media ignored because it goes against the narrative that he's a hero.
ReplyDeletePutin is pretty much all Snowden has going for him now. I think he should show more appreciation towards those that support him. It would look bad if he comes off as ungrateful to his host.
DeleteI would have liked to have seen how you idiots reacted to the Pentagon Papers case and Daniel Ellsberg. A bunch of nice little authoritarians here.
ReplyDeleteYou people are all doing exactly what the government wants -- conflating what they are illigally, unconstitutionally doing, with the motives and personality of the whistleblower. Nice little sheeple doing exactly what they are told.
ReplyDeleteThis 'whistleblower' is an educated adult. He knew what he was doing and his motives. Whistleblowers have a hell of a time in many cases. Sometimes their lives are totally wrecked.
DeleteSnowden wants to convince the government and the public he is a good whistleblower guy. He may be, he may not be. He wants to be made an exception and not have a trial. A trial could help him if he is sincere. If he thinks the system wouldn't help him he can stay away from going to trial here. Sometimes life is just what it is and a person has to not only be an educated adult but also grow up.
It is nice of Russia to help Snowden. Wherever he goes he still has to deal with the laws. He can spend his life trying to convince the government and the public he is a good whistleblower. Many expats leave their country of origin and never return.
Snowden disgusts me when he whines. Whether he is a traitor/spy or a whistleblower. He is his own worst enemy but not bright enough to realize that.
Some interesting comments from people likely claiming to be progressive. Buying a bit of the MSM narrative. It should be noted to all that claim he should come home and stand up for his convictions is that the "trial" would all be kept secret, he would not be afforded constitutional rights...as stated so well by Daniel Ellsberg. As a progressive myself, I do get a bit tired of anyone blindly buying a political party line. But have a ball guys, at least the information he disclose will help make your constitutional rights safer.
ReplyDeleteSnowden can count his blessings he has a new life in Russia. I am sure his family can see him and move there if they want. If he comes back here the legal system may treat him like they treat poor ppl, minorities and aliens.
DeleteOh what a pity, that poor dude.
He is lucky to have his life in Russia and he can check out other countries while he is on his journey through life. If he was smart he thought things out and knew the various scenarios he could end up with. It was his choice.
I have no sympathy for Snowden. He knew what he was doing and, if he was really so stupid as to think he would be better off in Russia, then let him rot there.
DeleteBeaglemom
Beaglemom Agree. He should embrace his new life and stop sniveling.
DeleteMore government lies about Snowden revealed today by Washington Post's David Ignatius' interview with James Clapper. I'm sure that revealing the lies was not Ignatius' goal, as he is as big a government buttsniffer as anyone posting on here:
ReplyDeleteMost notable is Ignatius’ summary of the government’s attempt to claim Snowden seriously compromised the security of the U.S.:
"Pressed to explain what damage Snowden’s revelations had done, the official was guarded, saying that there was “damage in foreign relations” and that the leaks had “poisoned [NSA’s] relations with commercial providers.” He also said that terrorist groups had carefully studied the disclosures, turning more to anonymizers, encryption and use of couriers to shield communications.
"The senior official wouldn’t respond to repeated questions about whether the intelligence community has noted any changes in behavior by either the Russian or Chinese governments, in possible response to information they may have gleaned from Snowden’s revelations.
"In other words, the only specific damage they can point to is from the anger that other people around the world have about what the U.S. government has done and the fact that people will not want to buy U.S. tech products if they fear (for good reason) that those companies collaborate with the NSA. But, as usual, there is zero evidence provided (as opposed to bald, self-serving assertions) of any harm to genuine national security concerns (i.e., the ability to monitor anyone planning actual violent attacks).
"As is always the case, the stream of fear-mongering and alarmist warnings issued by the government to demonize a whistleblower proves to be false and without any basis, and the same is true for accusations made about the revelations themselves (“In January, [Mike] Rogers said that the report concluded that most of the documents Snowden had access to concerned ‘vital operations of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force’” – AP: Lawmakers: Snowden’s Leaks May Endanger US Troops“). But none of that has stopped countless U.S. journalists from mindlessly citing each one of the latest evidence-free official claims as sacred fact."
Prut, Why do you read that bs? It will rot your brain. Snowden is an adult and Putin will not stop him from saying what all he wants to say. Why does Snowden care what Americans think? It is mostly opinion. If he thinks he'll be treated like a poor person or an minority in the American legal system, he can do what anyone else would do. Deal with it. He can do another interview, if he was a poor man, he would not be able to do that much. He should continue to kiss Putin's butt and happy for all the man has done for him.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I never thought he was a selfless patriot.
ReplyDeleteI always considered him a spy and a traitor. The fact that he is a self-centered opportunist just supports my original opinion.
Oh, and told you so.
If he stops the whine he can hit the big time and catch a yacht to Croatia. There are lot's of elites that would enjoy the novelty.
