Republican lawmaker helps to cripple Hawaii's sex education program because he claims it "normalizes" homosexuality.

Hawaii State Representative Bob McDermott clearly very upset that he never gets in any of this.
Courtesy of Raw Story:

Hawaii’s state Department of Education announced on Saturday that its middle school sexual education program would only be taught to students whose parents explicitly opted-in.

The announcement was a victory for Hawaii State Representative Bob McDermott, who claimed that the program would “normalize” homosexuality. Rep. McDermott has long fought against sexual education programs like Pono Choices, which was developed by the University of Hawaii at Mānoa’s Center on Disability Studies using funding from the federal Office of Adolescent Health. (“Pono” is a Hawaiian word typically translated as “righteous.”)

“I am a little uncomfortable saying this, but this is what your children, your 11-year-old children, are being taught. To me, this is outrageous because it robs them of their innocence and it’s not appropriate,” McDermott said about the program late last year.

“I can assure you my 11-year-old girl knows nothing about anal sex, and one of the reasons is because she’s not exposed to Pono Choices.” (Yeah, well I can assure this uptight prick that his daughter knows all about anal sex, and could probably teach him a thing or two. These kids are NEVER as innocent as their parents think they are.)

After he made that statement, the Department of Education temporarily suspended the program until it could determine the curriculum’s “appropriateness.” It found that “the cirriculum meets department standards” and “is a culturally responsive curriculum that has resulted in positive outcomes for students.”

However the program was only reinstated on an "opt in" basis which means that parents have to sign a paper allowing their children to attend instruction, rather than the usual method of "opting out." Of course the result of this approach is that more children will miss the opportunity to learn and that is not good for fighting STD's and keeping teen pregnancy stats low.

Personally I am a little surprised that Hawaii is still struggling with this kind of thing.

Not only did they recently pass a law allowing gay marriage, but in my experience it is just about the gayest place on the planet.

Not to mention that everybody is dressed in brightly colored garb, wearing flowers around their neck, and that they have a long standing tradition of young men who dress like women to have sex with other men, called the Mahus.

Historically the Mahus are widely accepted in Hawaiian culture, and are also revered for their dancing and sexual abilities.

But leave it to some uptight haole to screw things up for the people of Hawaii.

Gosh Gryphen, you must be typing like a speed demon because there are a number of typos in this post including the headline, so maybe a quick re-read/fix might be in order?

He's got it the wrong way around, to my way of thinking. I'd say, for instance, "vagina aggressively scarfs down penis."

Ya think I should tell him so?

Am I blind or is this asshole WHITE? And wasn't it the WHITES who screwed over the islands with their missionaries and crap like that?

The program probably doesn't PUSH anal sex, anyway. (No pun intended, thank you very much!) it probably just explains what it is.

Fools like this want their children to learn AFTER MARRIAGE and that leads to a huge number of divorce cases based on sexual incompatibility! Not to mention all sorts of "social diseases" - like this POS!

Fools like this want OTHER people's children to reach the age of being sexually active with no information that will protect them from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Fools like this want OTHER people's children to be as ignorant as they are themselves.

  4. He's so terrified his daughter's "innocence" is stolen by classroom curricula, he's standing on a street corner with a sign?

You know these people NEVER come up with anything original. In 1989, before I got on the local school board, this was the issue that mobilized me, and that damn list of definitions was loudly damned as "describing" sex. Idiots can't tell the difference between a definition and a description.

Big fucking deal. Have the homeroom teacher send the permission slip home with the kid and then send reminders to follow up with those who do not return the permission form either declining the class or granting permission. Same drill I had to do in elementary school to go see the Harlem Globetrotters on a class trip or a picnic at the zoo. I was raised in a time before fourth-graders were married to their day-planner the way my son was trained beginning in kindergarten. Not that it's a bad thing at all, because he's been organized and always used it as a tool to get all of his stuff done by "planning his work and working his plan." My mom was always amazed with how much homework and info he managed. Then again she was comparing him to me, where she usually found my tests and report cards folded in my back pockets as she was emptying them to do laundry.

Did he just find out about this, and thinks the rest of us don't know?

Maybe it's just us, but we decided to start teaching our kids about sex in an age appropriate fashion. No cutsie names for body parts, they learned the proper terms. All it takes it to listen to your kids, answer them honestly, or better yet, help them find the answers together from reputable sources. Girls at Eleven are becoming women already, so anyone who opts out because they're ascared of homosexuality is doing their kids no favors.
If he really wants to learn about sex education, all he needs do is view his daughter's school bus videos.

We had a house on the Big Island for fifteen years. Our neighbors son had two girls in his sixth grade class get pregnant, and one in his fifth grade class.

Hawaii desperately needs sex education in the schools, more than any other place that I have ever lived. Also, pretty much anyone who can afford it, sends their children to private schools over there, and I'd be surprised if this guy was actually sending his daughter to a public school. He probably has no idea what the program is actually like, he just attacks it because he's a Republican.
