No troops to Iraq, but other options are being considered.
That was President Barack Obama's message Friday in response to the lightning advance by Sunni militant fighters in Iraq that could threaten the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
In a statement delivered from the White House South Lawn, Obama said the United States "will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq," but that he would be reviewing a range of other options in coming days.
"This is not going to happen overnight," the President said, adding that unless Iraq fixes its internal political problems, short-term military help from the United States won't make much difference.
Of course this comes in defiance of those who are banging the war drums and urging the President to send more of our young men and women back into the Iraq meat grinder.
In fact John McCain is now claiming that the war was won, until the Obama administration lost it again:
"We had it won," McCain said. "Gen. [David] Petraeus had the conflict won, thanks to the surge. If we had left a residual force behind, we would not be facing the crisis we are today. Those are fundamental facts ... The fact is, we had the conflict won. We had a stable government ... But the president wanted out, and now, we are paying a very heavy price. And I predicted it in 2011."
Of course that it ridiculous, and John McCain knows it.
No matter how long American troops stayed the sectarian violence was ALWAYS going to ratchet back up once they were gone, and the Sunnis were never forget that they were in power before the Americans came along and handed the country to their hated adversaries the Shiites.
And besides America left Iraq, because Iraq asked us to leave. So what choice did we really have?
If McCain had his way we would have troops in Iraq for forty or fifty more years until the generation that remembered the war had all died out.
Of course if Senator McCain had his way we would currently be fighting at least four or five more wars. He always reminds me of Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore from "Apocalypse now:"
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
And apparently John McCain loves the smell of America soldiers dying.
The sectarian violence in the Middle East has been going on for thousands of years and it's suddenly President Obama's fault?
ReplyDeleteOh, that's right...everything bad that has ever happened anywhere in the world at any point in history is Obama's fault. Sorry, forgot that rule.
I still am thankful that $arah's finger is not one death away from the nuclear trigger.
ReplyDeleteThe headline reads exactly the opposite of the story.
ReplyDeleteThe headline sounds as though republicans and states are urging that we not send troops back to Iraq, and the President is resisting (i.e., he wants to send troops back in).
"And besides America left Iraq, because Iraq asked us to leave. So what choice did we really have? "
Silly human, the question is what choice did Iraq have if we decided to stay? All other countries are simply props for us to act out Palin's brand of rill 'Murkan acksepshulism. It's not as though they are full of people with their own hopes and dreams that do not include the US.
Have you have been watching the beltway media's favorite Iraq warmonger, Senator John McCain cry like a spoiled child about Obama after the Sunni militant group ISIS invaded parts of Iraq? There's something he's not telling.
ReplyDeletehttp://crooksandliars.com/2014/06/what-john-mccain-wont-tell-you-iraq-kicked
4:57 You are an idiot - Sarah Palin would never have been near the nuclear 'trigger' as you call it.
ReplyDeleteYou should watch the educational segment that has been put out about the subject (it was just run on TV a few months ago).
That 'trigger' is very well protected by more than one person and neither the VP or the President have ready access to it....especially the VP! Thank god John McCain and Sarah Palin lost that race years ago.
I've read that when W Bush was considering the invasion of Iraq, that he and his advisors didn't give a damn about Iraqi tribal allegiances.
ReplyDeleteThey apparently didn't even consider what the Sunni- Shia conflict might mean.
The war worshiping neo-cons like Wolfowitz, Feith, Cheney, and Bolton didn't care about anything except a furtherance of 'Murica's military might, reputation, and kicking a little ass.
These blindly ignorant Repubs never listened to Colin Powell, who told them that "if you break it, you own it" , about the invasion.
Gryphen you are exactly right. No matter how many years
we occupied Iraq, the second we left, the militants, and the fanatics that have been fighting about religion and tribalism for centuries were going right back to the battlefield.
I predicted exactly this in 2002 when Shrub was beating the war drums. Anyone with any acquaintance with the mideast could have told these neocon fascists that you CANNOT build a democracy in a Muslim nation.
The Muslim hard core are all theocrats, and want a Sharia based government.
Blaming this on President Obama is the epitome of hubris and blind Sarah Palin style stupidity
The war worshiping neo-cons like Wolfowitz, Feith, Cheney, and Bolton didn't care about anything except a furtherance of 'Murica's military might, reputation, and kicking a little ass.

Don't forget "war is good for the economy", especially if you're in the supply biz.
And in the quest to blame Obama, they are terrifying the ignorant dolts who think the president is "one of them" and wants to destroy this country. Anything he does is suspect to them. The gop have their army of voting puppets built in. America has become a Muslim=boogeyman fearing nation. Some even believe that the refugee/immigrants held in Texas are really terrorist sleeper cell children from the middle east.
McCain, Graham, Issa and other repub. idiots are STILL trying to put blame on President Obama and Hillary for FOUR American deaths in Benghazzi. Why do they want to risk THOUSANDS of deaths for W/Cheney's war of choice? Pull ALL US citizens out, and let these people have their country back, to run as THEY want to. The US has paid too much of a price in blood, lives and treasure already. The Russians were smart to leave, let the USA do the same. Not to mention, if they see the dysfunction in the US politics, why would they choose the same for their country? McCain saw the "Mission Accomplished" banner, and W in his flight suit with 3 pairs of socks stuffed into the crotch, and was happy the war is over (yeah, right)
ReplyDeleteJohn McCain is an ass and a constant war monger...he says the same thing about every country that has problems and blames our wonderful POTUS! Someone needs to shut him up! (McCain, I mean!)
ReplyDeletePlea To The Mainstream Media — Can You Please Cut Off John McCain’s Mic?
DeleteOn Friday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) appeared on five different cable news shows to discuss the recent flare up of sectarian violence in Iraq and directly blame it all on President Obama and his administration. This all took place after McCain left a closed door security briefing on the situation in Iraq after only a few minutes in order to meet with reporters so he could tell them that Obama’s entire national security team needed to be fired, starting with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey. It is practically a given that McCain will appear on at least one Sunday news show, if not multiple, this Sunday.
At a certain point, the mainstream media has to cut McCain off. The man is addicted to media exposure. He doesn’t care one bit about actual any actual legislative work that is required of him as a Senator. All he wants to do is go on TV and complain about the current administration or call for the United States to invade yet another country. He can’t be bothered with actually attending meetings, hearing or briefings for information. As stated above, he left a briefing well before it was over so he could get in front of an open mic. That is par for the course for McCain. Heck, in November 2012, he held a press conference to complain about the lack of information regarding Benghazi while skipping a classified briefing ON BENGHAZI! You can’t makes stuff like this up.

I keep giving him the benefit of the doubt, and he blows it big time, again and again. Where was McCain when the blunder years occurred? (Bush/Cheyney Regime).
DeleteObama said we were pulling out, and we are. We trained their forces at great costs of lives, limbs and money, they dropped their weapons and ran with their hands up, how is this President Obama's fault?
Did they expect that we'd leave and they'd be joining hands singing "kumbaya"? Big Oil depends on bloodshed and endless war. John McCain should be ashamed of himself and/or resign. Leaving a briefing is like abandoning your post. Take a hint from Sarah, quit.
Shep Smith: The Same People Who Were Wrong About Iraq Now Want Us To Go Back (VIDEO)
ReplyDelete"Are we about to be drawn back into a conflict in Iraq?" Smith asked. "The same people who 12 years ago told us this will be quick, this will be easy, this will be inexpensive, they will see us as liberators, it's the right thing to do, are now telling us: It's the right thing to do. What's the endgame? Who's thought this through?"
Later in the broadcast, Smith, who's earned a reputation for occasionally bucking his employer's conservative orthodoxy, told fellow Fox News host Chris Wallace he still hasn't forgotten "being bamboozled" by the Bush administration before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

John McCain Predictably Blames Obama For Iraq Violence And Calls For Widespread Firings
ReplyDelete...Obviously, if you are going to have McCain on your show, you know he is going to blame anything and everything on President Obama and then claim that the answer to any problem is more boots on the ground. In this instance, a smug and condescending McCain constantly pointed out that “we had won the war,” but it was that darn Obama and his promise to not keep our troops in the country forever that screwed it all up. McCain constantly insulted the members of the show’s panel that asked him questions, namely Mike Brzezinski and the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein (thankfully, Joe Scarborough wasn’t on set) for having the temerity to ask him if he was advocating for indefinite troop presence in the Middle East and what exactly he meant by victory in a war.
http://www.politicususa.com/2014/06/13/john-mccain-claims.html
...
McCain should know damned well that Iraq wanted us out of there too and that our leaving had to do w/prior POTUS Bush agreements as to our leaving that country.
DeleteMcCain needs to be removed from his position in Congress - he is nothing more than a war monger and is one of the top American Terrorists in the Republican party!
He's un-American and needs to be put on trail, found guilty and provided the means to meet his maker! (Although I doubt he'll go to heaven - betcha it will be hell as he's lived a pretty unchristian like life!)

Shep Smith Gives Iraq Hawks A History Lesson
ReplyDelete...Smith once again proved that he isn't afraid to deviate from other conservatives with his remarks on Obama's approach to the Iraq conflict, as he did in endorsing Obama's stance on same-sex marriage and when Smith provided a contrast to his network's view on the released American prisoner of war, Bowe Berghdahl. Smith's warning against jumping into the conflict in Iraq echoed that of MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who warned that the people who "most aggressively argued that we ought to start the Iraq War in 2003" should not be trusted when calling for intervention now.

Not much to be done about sectarian violence--it seethes below the surface no matter who's keeping it tamped down. It has to burn itself out, and in the mean time it's very ugly. Just ask the Irish. Iraq has to solve its own problems--allies can help, but no more troops on the ground. Whatever the Rethuglicans say is horseshit.

American terrorists = Republicans beginning w/McCain, McConnell, Ryan and Boehner!
DeleteThe repubs. are implying that the 4 Americans killed in Benghazzi had more value than the young servicepeople they want to send back to the hellhole that is Iraq? Little johnny Mac should stick to playing his video poker, and leave the grownups to solve this problem. Are his arms too short to reach back to wipe his butt, is that what he has Ms. Lindsey around for?
ReplyDeleteLet's send W, Chaney, Condi Rice, Rumsfeld, McCain & Wolfie & Revoltin' Bolton to Irag and set them up in the square where they toppled Saddam's statue. Put diapers on them so they don't soil themselves for the picture.
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea!
DeleteToday in a press conference, John McCain called for the bombing of Chile, Costa Rica, Chad, China, Colombia, Congo, Croatia, Cuba, Curacao, Cyprus, Czech Republic and China.
ReplyDeleteHe said President Obama is weak and feckless if he refuses to bomb these countries immediately.
Tomorrow, on to the D's. There are some countries beginning with D. When little Johnny appears on his regular Sunday propoganda show, he will bloviate about what HE would have done as President. I'll bet even Cindy does not watch him on Sundays.
DeleteLeave it to that oldman to make a complete azzhole out of himself. AGAIN. What a delusional pos.....and his delusional rapture turd palin. For the love of this country? Good gosh he is pathetic. worthless hog
ReplyDelete7:53 On what network did McCain say to bomb these places? I've had TV on all morning (northwest) and I'm sure if he said something like that they'd be covering it on every channel!
ReplyDeleteWhat's hypocritical is the right-wing pouncing on President Obama to do something NOW, because Al-Maliki's soldiers have deserted, dropped their uniforms and fled out of cowardice. The right-wing would have America's young men and women risk their lives to go over there and fight the fight that "Iraqi deserters" should be doing?
ReplyDeleteYet, one possible (but unlikely) deserter, Bergdahl, one of their own, an American, is publicly trashed as a coward and when he's rescued, they're wishing he'd been left imprisoned and have absolutely no sympathy. They reject their own and would have him lynched, yet would send their sons and daughters as a an offering to defend Iraq's interests and pay the price that Iraq's Army should be paying.
Talk about ultimate hypocrisy.
It takes completely brazen chutzpah for Neo-Con Republicans like John McCain to criticize President Obama's policies in Iraq -- especially as Iraq once again falls into sectarian civil war.
ReplyDeleteThese are precisely the people who kicked open the sectarian hornets' nest in 2003 when they invaded Iraq and unleashed years of civil war that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees.
Of course the current Iraqi government bears a great deal of the responsibility for the current breakdown in security. As Fareed Zakaria wrote in Friday's Washington Post:
The prime minister and his ruling party have behaved like thugs, excluding the Sunnis from power, using the army, police forces and militias to terrorize their opponents.
The Sunni insurrection that began in 2003 was finally tamped down by General David Petraeus when he engineered power-sharing arrangements between the Shiites and key elements of the Sunni community. Prime Minister Maliki has systematically abrogated many of those deals, reneged on commitments and created the conditions where Sunni insurgents have real sympathy among many in the Sunni population.
That is why the Obama Administration has insisted that increases in U.S. military assistance be conditioned on major changes that help create a political system inclusive of all of the elements in Iraqi society.

The seven people who need to STFU about Iraq right now
ReplyDeleteWe at Raw Story’s Oh God Here We Go Again desk know that we can’t be the only ones whose stomachs are turning at the thought of a renewed military engagement in Iraq.
We marvel at the Big Brass Ones on some people who feel the need to offer their opinions about how the U.S. should conduct itself with regards to recent rise of extremist elements in the country and the loss of two of its major cities to al Qaeda. These people seem to believe that their previous dire wrongness on everything about the topic of Iraq shouldn’t preclude them from opining about our nation’s current course of action, goodness no.

Iraqi security forces regain ground north of Baghdad

Oh how they are salivating for a war, to the point that they will spill top secrets to coerce President Obama into armed conflict in Iraq or anywhere else they see fit to feed the engorged Military Industrial Complex that they count on donations from. And this guy is talking out of his ass about national security, and he can't even keep his goddamn big mouth shut about national security briefings?

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) suggested President Barack Obama might be a terrorist supporter and said he’s considered releasing classified information to hurt the administration.
Inhofe told host Tony Perkins that the Obama administration had made “stupid” military decisions, and he’s considered sharing classified materials to prove it.
“All of these hearings, these classified briefings like the one we had this morning, I almost don’t mind talking about what they said because it’s are all so orchestrated, they always have five or six people from the administration, all of them agreeing with the president,” Inhofe said.
Specifically, he cited the prisoner exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl as one of those “stupid” decisions.
