Courtesy of HuffPo:
Hobby Lobby -- now free to drop emergency "morning after" pills and intrauterine devices from its workers' health insurance plans -- has given no indication that it plans to stop helping its male employees obtain erectile dysfunction treatments.
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the craft store chain, owned by evangelical Christians, doesn't have to pay for health care coverage of contraceptives prohibited by its owners' religion.
But pills and pumps that help a man stiffen his penis in preparation for sex are perfectly acceptable.
Yes that's right ladies, Hobby Lobby is all about helping your man get a boner, but if that throbbing scepter of conception fertilizes one of those slutty eggs of yours they do not want anything to do with the fact that you may be saddled with an eighteen year commitment that will seriously hijack your life.
You know it dawned on me today that the ratio of men to women that come into a Hobby Lobby store must be about one or two for every hundred. I mean I looked through their online store and I quickly realized that this is the kind of store that most men would only enter if their wife was dragging them in by their hair.
And, though I have never been to one, I have to imagine that the number of women working in the store must outnumber the men by similar margins.
No, I'm sure there are SOME men working there. You know in a managerial capacity, because though the ladies look nice and are great at selling fabric they simply don't have the intellect for maintaining inventory or handling the money.
Right Mr. green?
And after considering all that I had only one question.
This is an organization that relies almost one hundred percent on female clientele and yet they went to the Supreme Court in order to be excluded from providing to their female employees the kind of health insurance that virtually every other company in the country MUST provide to them, and yet found nothing objectionable about providing males employees (All six of them) health insurance that helps to pay for a pump which allows them to get an erection anytime they want.
And if that were not enough hypocrisy for you do not forget that Hobby Lobby's retirement plan invests quite heavily in contraception manufacturers.
And yes that includes the emergency contraception medications that they seem so adamantly against providing to their employees.
Update: Just when you thought all of this could not be more galling, it also seems that before Hobby Lobby was against providing access to emergency contraception on their health care plans they were for it.
I can't wait until a closely held Muslim corporation decides women employees must be more modest and wear head covering. I wish a woman owned business would decline to pay for viagra or any other erectile dysfunction paraphernalia.
ReplyDeleteI hope a rich Orthodox Jew would decide to ban all medications because of the gelatin coating them, and take it to the SC. What will they do? Discriminate against the Jew, or realize they are complete idiots?
DeleteYeah, a Muslim corp wants the women to wear burka's b/c ya know birth control! Someone tweeted that yesterday had HoLo been Muslim it would of never passed.
DeleteI've been into a Hobby Lobby one time. (I'm male btw, they do have some selection of hobby supplies like I look for at HobbyTown USA but I had to navigate past rows of country, nicknack, crafts stuff). Anyway, one look around at the customer base (99.99% female shoppers) and you will understand why the store will suffer no boycotts. In fact, business may even improve. The Country-Arts/Crafts Right-Wing-Religious crowd. That's why.
ReplyDelete"The Country-Arts/Crafts Right-Wing-Religious crowd."
DeletePerfectly phrased. Kitsch for Christ, yup yup.
Yep. Hobby lobby caters to the Christian stay at home woman.
DeleteTake a minute and go to Hobbylobby.com , click on contact and let them know you will never step foot in their stores again.
DeleteChristians in America! I detest the majority of them who also claim to be Republicans and Teabaggers - evil, nasty folks - that are also very racist!
DeleteThink I prefer the atheists who are increasing in number across the USA! They are much more thoughtful and kind people!
It was never about birth control, it was always and will forever be about the black man in the White House.
ReplyDeleteThat's all well and good considering he can't get pregnant, what about his daughters? Slut shaming 101, now US government supported.
DeleteIf you've never been to a Hobby Lobby you don't know what you are missing. They have everything you need to decorate your home for any of the major holidays, sewing needs, flowers and decorations for weddings and even some small pieces of furniture. It WAS a great place to shop. I will be adding Hobby Lobby to my list of businesses (Walmart) with which I will no longer spend my dollars.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Suzy Q. I started boycotting Walmart several years ago. Hobby Lobby used to be a place I liked to buy paint and canvas, etc. but not more. Found this yesterday - https://www.facebook.com/HobbyLobbyBoycott. Since I "liked" it yesterday, over 8000 other people have, too. Women make Hobby Lobby. They can break Hobby Lobby.
DeleteFunny, but they never sold any Chanukah decorations.... Wrong religion I guess!
DeleteNot a single HL in CT. Let's keep it that way. Unfortunately out here in the country for many items it's Walmart or a 45 mile drive… or the internet (my choice except for real emergencies)
DeleteSadly there is one on Frontage Rd off 95 in New Haven.
Delete" throbbing scepter of contraception "
ReplyDelete----------------------------------------
Viagra has nothing to do with contraception (birth control). In fact, HL may not see any contradiction in supporting Viagra while opposing contraception.
They may see Viagra as helping men achieve their manly, god-given purpose in being able to have an erection and impregnate the little woman and thereby produce another warrior for god.
You're right. I think he meant inception tho. Given the context.
DeleteYea, keep the old guys w/a boner (Viagra) and keep the women barefoot and pregnant! Total bullshit!
DeleteDon't shop w/them anywhere across the USA!
Sorry actually meant conception.
DeleteHad a brain fart.
I don't know, Gryph, depends on how ugly (or miniscule) that "throbbing scepter" is. Maybe it turns the ladies off and then it's used as contraception. lol
DeleteBut they have no problem covering vasectomies!!!
DeleteIs not that a form of birth control?
Can someone please clarify which are the four contraceptive Rx's or devices which Hobby Lobby's insurer will not now have to cover? The ones they claim are abortifacients.
ReplyDeleteThey have no stores in Alaska, but Alaskans can provide this info to all family members and friends living where their stores are and suggest boycotting them! In fast order!
ReplyDeleteThey do not warrant women shopping with them at all! I say 'run them out of business'!
I read in my morning newspaper (USA TODAY provided the information for the article, fwiw) that "the Hobby Lobby case doesn't currently affect the birth control methods that are most commonly used - most birth control pills, sterilization, condoms and sponges." Is the word "currently" key to this? I don't know. "The birth control methods affected by Monday's Supreme Court decision: Plan B 'morning-after pill,' Ella 'morning-after pill,' and hormonal and copper intrauterine devices (IUDs).
ReplyDeleteIt still doesn't change the fact that the boss gets to decide what birth control individual citizens can use. Covering Viagra, okay, covering IUDs, not so much. The most hypocritical in this is Hobby Lobby's investing retirement funds in Plan B.
I've used a IUD on and off while I was still fertile. I loved it, and didn't have to worry about hormone side affects. According to the Hobby Lobby owners, I guess I'm a murder,
DeleteYou are a whore and a slut. That's their worldview.
DeleteYou know, 10:51, I wonder how many people would even know what a day old blastula is in a magnified photo.
DeleteI'm a women's health care provider, I've been prescribing contraception and inserting IUD's for the last 20 years. I don't recall ever hearing a woman tell me that she is using a contraceptive sponge as her method. So I think "currently" must be a relative term. The last time I recall hearing about sponges was on a famous episode of Seinfeld. I think they can still be found and they may be commonly used in some other parts of the country but not in mine.
DeleteIf I were to guess the breadown of types used percentage-wise in our very busy Ob/Gyn practice, I would say about 40 % pills, 30 % (maybe more) IUD's and 30 % other (Nexplanon, condoms only and Natural Family Planning - which is a real thing). We insert a LOT of IUD's, I personally insert about 3 or 4 /week and have for 20 years. That's a lot of IUD's.
Just to get it on the record here, the mechanism of action (how they work) for Plan B and Ella - both emergency contraception - is to prevent ovulation. They will not abort an implanted embryo.
The mechanism of action for the Mirena IUD is to create a cervical mucus plug that actually creates a barrier in the cervix thereby blocking it to the entry of sperm. If any of the sperm do get in, the interior of the uterus is now "inhospitable" to the sperm and they die before they find a date w/ an egg. This works more than 95.5% of the time.
The copper IUD works to create an atmosphere that kills the sperm due to the way the copper changes the atmosphere inside the uterus. Again more than 95.5 % of the time. All of this is despite the "sincerely held religious belief" of the Green family that these methods kill little babies. In fact there is a .5% failure rate and we have seen it in out practice, where a woman does become pregnant with an IUD in place, the IUD is carefully removed and the pregnancy can proceed (or not if the woman chooses). The Green family is full of shit and they have a totally different agenda than we are being led to believe.
And then there is this:

DeleteThank You! And Thank you for all you do for Women's health!
I had a IUD for 11yrs (non copper) (way overdue for them) but it worked. After I had it removed I had a tubal ligation.
Appreciate you setting the record straight, maybe you should of been asked to educate the supreme court on this? (obvious no one did or they are too dumb to get it)
I had heard about the sponges back in the day, but didn't trust them.
As it turned out when I had my tubal I found out I was lucky to even GET preg the first time!
LOL.
Thank you again for posting and for helping women have a choice!
"“The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) is profoundly disappointed in today’s Supreme Court decision, which allows employers to impose their religious views on their female employees’ health care.
Delete“This decision inappropriately allows employers to interfere in women’s health care decisions. All health care decisions – including decisions about contraception – should be made by a woman and her doctor, based on the patient’s needs and her current health. Her employer’s religious beliefs should not overrule her doctor’s advice. "
From Anon 2:49
SCOTUS should be disbarred! They perverted the constitution! Me thinks there will be hell to pay for this backasswards stupid fucking decision on their party. Hope their kok bros are ready to pay for all the suits.
"It still doesn't change the fact that the boss gets to decide what birth control individual citizens can use. "

Which is total bullshit! The cemetery across from me was picketing... the Archdiocese was trying to limit their HC about BC. The MEN were MAD! Some were older but said the younger guys wives had enough kids and didn't want more. At the time I thought the ACA would help them. I was wrong. So many people will be affected by this. We need single payer. NOW!
i refuse to shop at hobby lobby.
ReplyDeleteI did a lot of shopping when I was still able to do arts and craftsy things and trust me, most of those ladies were post- menopausal! But there were always about the same amount of men working there stocking shelves, making the high wall displays or cutting picture frames or "manning" the cash registers. The ladies were older and knew how to cut fabric correctly..in fact this old lady would look for someone older who knew how to measure and cut correctly. The lady customers would carry the bolts to the cutting tables in the carts, but the guys would carry the stacks of bolts back to the display counters. But if you asked a gentleman where such and such was by it's name they would usually find a woman to help you! It's like a woman going into an auto supply shop and looking for a guy to help you! The gals at the counter didn't have the foggiest idea of what you wanted or what it did or where to find it....they took the money and gave you a receipt! I bet those gals have their contraceptives covered by insurance. Owners/managers don't like to continually hire and train new people if the gals get pregnant all the time! Or be responsible for any hanky-panky in the back rooms on lunch hour that could they might be responsible for! :-) I will no longer ever shop at Hobby Lobby due to this fiasco! Michael's carry the same things and they are much friendlier, also, too!
ReplyDeleteI never even HEARD of HOLO until this...always Micheal's, but they are trying to come into my city and I will fight tooth and nail against them. We have fought against wallmart too. Fuck the Fundy's!
DeleteWay to go, Hobby Lobby, keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Ha!!! Go Blue!!!
DeleteAnd Hobby Lobby, don't go around bragging if it don't go down after four hours. No one likes a show off!
SCOTUS Offers Obama A Way To Fix Birth Control Coverage Gap
ReplyDeletehttp://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/how-obama-can-fix-birth-control-gap-created-by-scotus
That will please Bristol and Sarah who always want President Obama to fix everything or to call them.
DeleteGlad he can fix this and can't wait for Palins to show their appreciation.
I only check Scarah screech to see that the coward is still hiding behind Facebook.
That's what cracks me up about the fundie's argument. they don't think HL should pay for these 4 pills, so now we all will in our taxes LOL
DeleteObama said he will ensure the employees are covered in the same manner that religious orgs are now covered. Seems to me that all this nonesense is getting us closer to single payor. Yeah. Can't happen soon enough.
ReplyDeleteI had heard the same thing, that they provided emergency contraception before they were against providing it. This was all about the Right Wing, specifically the Beckett Fund, going plaintiff shopping and finding someone like the Greens who would have fake outrage. As Olivia at 9:23 said, this isn't about contraception, it's about denying the black man in the White House any successes. And I wonder if the Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty would defend a Muslim run business, or even a Jehovahs Witness run business who, say, refused to provide coverage for blood transfusions. Justice Alito tried to say that this decision would only cover this case, and that's bullshit. This is the same guy who sat in the state of the union and shook his head no, when the President pointed out the havoc that the Citizens United Case would cause. Oh, one last thing, (sorry for the rant), but wouldn't someone being impotent be "God's Will"? And isn't Viagra a product of "SCIENCE"? Funny how they will embrace science when it means getting a hard willy but not when it comes to saving our kid's future.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I had wondered about the plaintiff shopping, but I did not know about the Beckett Fund. I bet Hobby Lobby didn't have to pay a penny for this lawsuit. I also wonder if they will eventually regret getting involved.
DeleteI've never been to one of these dorky hobby lobby stores and never will, but do you really think this is about a black guy and not the R war on women? I think the women are the ones being affected more than the guys, whichever color.
DeleteI don't think I've ever been in a Hobby Lobby, so resolving not to go there feels like an empty sacrifice. It's like choosing not to buy Marlboro if you're not even a smoker.
ReplyDeleteIt's too easy for a gay man to tell himself he doesn't have a horse in this race, but smart men of every orientation who have women they cherish (and that leaves out none) should be as steamed by this decision as any woman. If I had a daughter coming of age whose reproductive autonomy was dealt this insult I'd be raving furious. Luckily, I don't think I know any women clueless enough to set foot in a Hobby Lobby, and every time I hear the name of the place I intend to spit.
"It's too easy for a gay man to tell himself he doesn't have a horse in this race, but smart men of every orientation who have women they cherish "
Delete****
I can't see any gay guy shopping there. If they hate women just imagine how they feel about Gays?
And yes the guys have moms, who may have had to go to planned parenthood to get Women's services like many of us did...back in the day!
Nope. No one but fundy's will shop in those shit ass stores and now that palin cursed them (with her approval) they are dead in the water, like chikfila!
Hey sarah dead fish go with the flo...doncha know...!
bhwhahahahahaaaa
dvlaries, I enjoy reading your comments. Thanks for understanding and supporting the women you know and honoring the women in your family. This isn't just a woman's healthcare issue, it effects a woman and families quality of life. With Marriage Equality, it'll effect the gay community as well.
DeleteThe picture is somewhat misleading. Replace the pill packet. The "morning-after pill" Plan B and Ella; copper and hormonal IUDs would make for a more accurate picture.
ReplyDeleteTell me again there is no war against women. I have to agree with Olivia @9:23: it's all about the black guy in the White House plain and simple. Hope Hobby Lobby owners go bankrupt even though it's not too realistic. Something women CAN control is who gets voted out in the '14 elections.
"Update: Just when you thought all of this could not be more galling, it also seems that before Hobby Lobby was against providing access to emergency contraception on their health care plans they were for it. "
ReplyDeleteLIGHTEN UP, GRYPHEN!!!

Sure, you have compassion for meat-based people, but where is your compassion for corporation/people??
I feel sorry for you. smh
Beldar,
Deleteyou troll you, you almost got me especially with the classic sig "smh" of the troll...!
If nothing else, the Supreme Court's controversial ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby helps to emphasize the importance of voting in the 2014 primaries. It is only 5 months until November. Woman voters outnumber men, and there are many progressive men who are also disgusted by the anti-women actions by the gop.
ReplyDeleteI guess the same people who reject birth control don't reject paying for hard ons for men. ? HA HA HA It's sad but I do laugh at the hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteOT: "I believe that we will win!" Soccer mania in 30. How exciting! US v Belgium in the Knock-Out round. US wins and they go on to final 8. Never been there before. Thanks for indulging me in this.
ReplyDeleteBoycott Belgian Waffles! We got so close.
DeleteI am a 4th grade teacher. Hobby Lobby used to get a lot of my money. I haven't been in a Hobby Lobby since they filed their suit. I am able to get everything I need at other stores - and usually for less money.
ReplyDeleteI hear Bristol will be leaking her sex tape soon. That should be enough birth control to last generations. View that trick and who would ever be able to have sex again? Just the thought of it is enough to turn boys and some men away from sex with a female. They always have each other, guns, cars and more sexy particulars.
ReplyDeleteSo the Supreme court ruled in favor of a Xtian businessman start imposing Sharia law on the United States
ReplyDeleteCome on! It's because a black man mandated health insurance...this case has NOTHING to do with religious ideology. The retirement investment fund is a perfect example. They are hypocritical clowns. And the MALE judges who sit on SCOTUS are totally out of touch with modern day Americans. It's 2014 for christ sake.
ReplyDeleteHey, are the covering "Amniocentesis" for the employees? it can cause an abortion.... What else?

NOW detailed prior to the SCOTUS Hobby Lobby decision that they view this as sex discrimination and a violation of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause:
http://www.politicususa.com/2014/07/01/list-100-plaintiffs-filed-opposition-birth-control-mandate-obamacare.html
Roman Catholic archdioceses and Liberty University are lost causes and good riddance, I say. And direct to consumer organizations like HL can go with them. But any organization on this list that may derive significant revenue from government coffers needs to be examined closely.
DeleteIf the Ozinga in the lawsuit is the Ozinga Bros. concrete and building materials supplier active in the Chicago-area, it's entirely possible that they do subcontracting for government construction projects. If some additional research shows that to be true, it seems like some effort should be made to reduce the amount of such contracts they get in the future. Isn't that fair?
"If the Ozinga in the lawsuit is the Ozinga Bros. concrete and building materials supplier active in the Chicago-area, it's entirely possible that they do subcontracting for government construction projects."

wouldn't that be a conflict of interest? The GOV hiring a comp who doesn't want to provide HC for women? That is something you should send to NARAL or Planned Parenthood.

I own a craft-type business, I spend quite a bit of money at craft stores for my supplies. Not one dime has gone to H.L. since they started this crap, and now I'll never give them another dime again. Both Michael's and Joanne's have the same type merchandise only better IMO and without the whole trying to control my vagina thing.
ReplyDeleteThe court just opened the door for Sharia law.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, or fortunately..... the only craft stores we have around here are ACMoore and Michael's. I'm not "into" crafts, per se, but I have shopped for party goods and gifts for people I know who do crafts. It's hard to boycott a company that's too far to go to, but I'll do my best to get the word out, sign petitions.
ReplyDeleteI do use yarn and oil painting supplies, but I buy them in family owned local shops that support women and gay rights. Even though it costs a bit more, I try to spend as much as I can in small businesses. With this ruling, I strongly feel all stores should clearly display in their windows and ads what religion they declare.
I see the people who can find a way to excuse the most insane behaviour of the rightwingnuts, are saying that if THEY owned a company, they would want to limit contraception as well.
ReplyDeleteBut that shows the real problem with this ruling: Hobby Lobby is NOT a proprietorship, of one owner...its a corporate entity that filed for protection as such, and became a PUBLIC company.
So, the problem now, is just who gets to be the Ayatollah, from among the miriad of shareholders? The CEO? The CFO? The janitor's son, who came back from a summer in Yemen, now wearing a full beard and experimenting with explosives in his parents' basement?
Its as if the old farts on the high court, have gone past their expiry date, and can no longer think things through.
