Malala Yousafzai becomes youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Courtesy of the Daily Beast:

Malala Yousafzai has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous, and near fatal, campaign to secure girls’ education. At 17, she is the youngest recipient in the century that the prize has been given.

The Pakistani campaigner, who survived an assassination attempt at the age of 15, will share the award with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian activist who has dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of children.

As the announcement was made Malala was in class at her school in England. She sought refuge in the U.K. after surviving a shot to the head from a Taliban gunman. She has made history today but she will remain in school until classes are out this afternoon, Eason Jordan of The Malala Fund tells The Daily Beast.

It was Malala’s determination to get to class, despite the wish of extremists in the Swat Valley in Northwest Pakistan, that lead her to become one of the world’s most prominent education campaigners. Her refusal to cover her face and a willingness to speak out in defense of girls’ rights made her a target for the Taliban. Two years ago, a gunman boarded her school bus and fired three shots at her from close range.

Somehow she survived, and after treatment in Britain, she has continued to campaign – now with a worldwide audience. Last year she spoke at the United Nations in New York, and continued to promote her positive message. “A Talib chose guns to solve [a] problem, we chose our voices,” she said.

Finally a positive story about a young woman making a difference in the world and being recognized for her contribution.

I think we all needed this.

I've noticed that NOT ONE prominent evangelical Christian in the entire USA has come out and openly supported or given accolades to Malala for her incredibly brave acts.

NOT ONE Christian evangelical leader cares enough to even write about this, even now that she has won a Nobel prize.

That must mean nothing to them. They call their god the prince of peace, but they sure as hell don't act like "him".

Today all you'll hear from Tony Perkins, Charles Dobson, Jim Demint, Bryan Fischer, John Hagee, Franky Graham, or any of the rest of these prejudiced small minded "leaders" is crickets. Nada. Zip

They don't care about Malala, because she's just a heathen kid from that hated Muslim bunch, and she's of no account.

I freely admit I'm an athiest, but I was on the inside of the evangelical movement years ago, if they had ONE DAMN SHRED OF DECENCY or compassion, they would acknowledge this girl's incredible story, and maybe even offer to support her goals of bringing education to girls in oppressive countries.

But then again, we know better. They don't care, and they aren't following their Jesus in any observable ways I can see.

Their silence is a very eloquent and perfect expression of exactly what kind of men they really are.

You're forgetting to take something into account. The fundies and evangels do NOT want females to be anything other than what they were in the OT: chattel, property and second class citizens.

Therefore, they won't acknowledge ANY female with Malala's accomplishments.

    How wonderful!

Malala is a fine example for teenage girls and young woman around the world.

Would love to be able to give her a big hug! She truly deserved this recognition and award!

9:11 AM Supposed Christian leaders have brought hate to the world! They do not practice their teachings! All they are interested in is making money for themselves and family members.

And, they truly make me sick to my stomach!

It isn't often we get to talk about what's good or right with the world, but Malala and Kailash are two wonderful examples! Malala, especially, having almost paid the most extreme price for her efforts, and at such a young age, is a model of idealism and determination for not just girls, but boys, and women and men as well!

You've got that right. She wanted an education...and she was shot in the head for it. It's astounding that she not only survived, but also suffered few lasting setbacks.

Malala is very good. However, Code Pink's Medea Benjamin would also be a great choice. However, Medea opposes immoral U.S. activities while Malala opposes the Taliban who have a much smaller lobby and constituency, and less potential backlash.

    Just sayin'

@11:14 We know who the bully is, and it's you. It's a dumb comment made by someone who is afraid of the truth.

I was thinking the same thing. Malala nearly died for the right to an education. She fights for the right for other young women to have a right to education, which is a big contrast to the Palin girls who just seem to like fighting. No one in the Palin family seems to have any regard for education.

she hates the fact that the person that made her resign is FROM the Middle East...'I was just a vessel' or some crap like that from Royal England mommy...it's complicated because THEY made it that way...lol.. luck for us the 'birthright owner' of that HUGE money that Palin keeps 'skimming' off" is rumored to think like Solomon and act like Matlock so it seems humanity will fare just fine!!!
We just need to help this poor kid out and get a case going in the courts and 'drag them by their legs' to the trials to 'hold their feet to the fire' ...
It will just get worst because they have access to the funds while the 'owner' lives on the edge of poverty...another plus to humanity peoples...lol...
I can't wait to see the confrontation...hope tables are tossed and asses are kicked...ok just wishin'

I am truly sad to announce that the Palin family did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize today for promoting peace throughout Alaska, for their tireless efforts to eliminate sex trafficking in Alaska and for their efforts to expose and eliminate crooked Municipal prosecutors and police officers of the Anchorage Police Department.

I fear for Malala's safety. Now that she has such a prestigious and famous award, the hateful religious bigots of the Taliban may issue yet another fatwa against her and her family.

I think the British government should provide security for Malala and her family in the form of armed guards, and round the clock coverage, at least for the next few months.
Isis and the Taliban, like religious fanatics of every stripe, would like nothing more than to murder her in cold blood, much as the far right fringe in the USA would kill President Obama if they could.

No one more deserving than this fine young lady who understands and values the importance of education, not just for herself, but for ALL Girls.
Her family must be proud to witness this amazing recognition. People take so much for granted and are clueless what life is like in other parts of the world.
I just perused the other comments, and it's beyond appalling that a certain ex governor and her family even get mentioned, isn't it a given they're a bunch of low life towheads?

In her speech yesterday, Malala spoke eloquently and even made jokes...in English, her second language. The Wasilla Wendigo can't even speak her native language, even with a teleprompter to help her. Malala was in school (none of the Palin kids seem able to manage that!), in chemistry class, when a teacher told her she'd won. Then she went on to physics class--something none of the Palin clan has managed to take.
