Open thread for President Obama's immigration speech. Update!

I thought I would leave this last post open for discussion about the President's big speech about his executive action to get something done on immigration.

Apparently there are a number of television stations who are refusing to carry the speech live.

These include the big three, NBC, CBS, and ABC.

The Republicans are essentially losing their shit over this, and threatening to do....you know something:

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who will become majority leader in January, said in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday morning that Mr. Obama would regret choosing to ignore the wishes of the American people.

“If President Obama acts in defiance of the people and imposes his will on the country, Congress will act,” Mr. McConnell said just hours before the president was scheduled to speak to the nation on television. “We’re considering a variety of options. But make no mistake. Make no mistake. When the newly elected representatives of the people take their seats, they will act.”

Oooh, scary.

Personally I love that the President is calling the Republican's bluff.

I will post a video of the speech as soon as one becomes available. Until then feel free to post comments about the speech, both pro and con.

Update: Here is the full text of the speech.

Update 2: Holy crap, guess which undereducated dipshit feels the need to weigh in even before the last word was spoken of the President's speech.  (Warning: Link takes you to the Facebook page of a certain half term, half wit, ex-governor.)

Update 3: Here is the President's speech in full.
I thought this speech was quite impressive, and I believe the President hit just the right tone to make attacking him on it very difficult.

First explaining that despite Republican charges to the contrary that the border is actually more secure than ever was a brilliant move that renders much or of the conservative talking points moot.

And second by focusing his argument for passing this legislation on keeping families together, the President essentially hijacks the "family values" argument from the GOP playbook.

All in all the President seems to have anticipated many of the Republican's prepared attacks against him, and framed his statements in such a way as to force them to go back to square one.

In other words he seems to have used a little political jiujitsu on his most aggressive adversaries.

"Giving the people the middle finger?"
Is this her way of justifying Tracks behavior
at the hoe down? Well, if anyone was getting the finger I would say it was congress that had plenty of opportunity to
act on this issue before but didn't.
There is really a serious "hearing" problem
when it comes to her interpretation of what
is being said by our President.

President Obama has always remained classy and I'll wager it was taught him as a child - since he is after all half black! He is always respectful and kind!

But, I'll wager he and Michelle can say 'fuck you' behind closed doors! Makes me laugh thinking about it! And, I applaud them if they do!

And, then we have a group like the Palin klan that elude being nothing more than having zero class, no ethics and are proven racists! And, they always provide hate and anger speech - nothing every positive or solution motivated.

Congratulations to your right-leaning hubby for listening with both ears! This is one of the greatest speeches I have heard the President give: full of compassion, empathy, moral core, and historical facts – he seemed almost in tears during much of it. The only reason almost no network aired it is because they have almost all taken the hard-right line, have no compelling rebuttal argument, and wish (like a disgraced former Alaskan governor, who is also a mad woman) to continue in their lie-based soliloquy. They will have to debate the air, because there is nothing in that speech that can be debated.

Unfortunately, it won't be hard for them to oppose it. You ever notice how John Boehner always says the American people want this and want that. And he will bring up polls, like he did with the Keystone Pipeline vote, to say the President shou. do what the American people want. Well, 90% of the American people wanted backround checks but he never brought it to the floor. The Senate passed comprehensive immigration legislation overwhelmingly, and it was supported by a majority of the American people. It would have passed in the House of Reps but he never brought it to the floor. Apparently the Government should only do what the American people want when it agrees with the Speakers political leanings.

I agree: one of the best in his career, and that's really saying something.

As a side note, apart from the native Americans and hispanics (whose ancestors were here thousands of years before our own ancestors arrived), we are all descended from immigrants. I doubt that very many of our ancestral immigrants ever applied for full citizenship. Yes, many or perhaps most, were 'processed' at Ellis Island, but they did not formally apply for citizenship. There was no INS or DHS in those days; many of our ancestors did not even speak English, some were illiterate, and few, if any, took written citizenship tests (assuming they were even given out in those days). People were not deported for over-staying: au contraire, the immigrants were part of what made our Manifest Destiny possible.

And by the way, to the best of my knowledge, Rick Santorum's dad has yet to become an American citizen: born in Italy, he's still living here 'undocumented', as I understand it. If we searched carefully and thoroughly enough, we could find millions more like him in white communities all across the nation.

I doubt the GOP is screeching to beef up the Canadian border, or deport the millions of illegal Canadians, Irish, Russians, and other white-skinned people who may have over-stayed their welcome here. Dig deep enough, and you might find that immigration has much more to do with race than with immigration. Merely because the composition of our national 'complexion' is changing (and not in their favor), the righties have decided that now is the time to change the rules of the game. I hope they get what they deserve: not one latino or black vote in the next election.

He's just going down the list: Pull the USA out the the Great Recession - check. Wind down combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan - check. Stop torturing prisoners - check. Bring down the unemployment rate - check. Expand health care coverage to more than 10 million Americans - check. Treat Gay Americans better than all other presidents combined - check. And now helping immigrants find a safe haven in America. He is a man of his word.

...President Obama dared Republicans to pass an immigration bill, “The actions I’m taking are not only lawful, they’re the kinds of actions taken by every single Republican President and every single Democratic President for the past half century. And to those Members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill. I want to work with both parties to pass a more permanent legislative solution.”

What was an announcement of immigration executive action also was a vigorous step to hold Republicans accountable. President Obama pulled no punches on the Republicans and easily knocked down the Republican cries of amnesty and a lawless president.

Obama called for reasoned, thoughtful, compassionate debate. This is exactly the kind of debate that racial politics playing Republicans have refused to engage in on this issue for more than a decade. The executive action doesn’t go nearly as far as Republican fearmongers suggested it would. The changes are extremely important for millions, but they are not amnesty.

The president dealt a body blow to Republicans by quoting scripture and painting his executive action immigration as an act of compassion to keep families together. President Obama has painted Republicans into a corner, and set the stage for GOP to destroy itself on this issue.

Boehner and McConnell have been terrified of the immigration issue for years. President Obama has taken a sledgehammer to the Republican agenda and placed the one issue that Republicans don’t want to talk about front and center in our national conversation.

Obama demonstrated tonight what the power of the presidency can do to even the angriest opposition.

    Your move, Speaker Boehner.

After Immigration Speech Republicans Admit That Obama’s Got Them By The Balls

....Let us detail why Republicans feel like President Obama has them by the balls.

First, what the President did was legal.
Second, what the President did has long precedent behind it.
Third, Republicans don’t care about facts or legality, so they planned on simply defunding Obama’s executive actions while still funding the government but they found out today that they can’t do that. It turns out they are not in charge of funding for immigration actions.
Fourth: Republicans have told everyone that Obama should be impeached for doing something legal. Some of them even said he should be in prison. So now they sort of have to do something or they look pretty weak. But they can’t really do anything and maintain a semblance of pretense about being a party that can govern.

But hey, they built this problem. Please proceed, Republicans.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/11/20/republicans-admit-obama-balls-immigration-actions.html

Guess they will have to go back to coming up with their promised health care plan. impeachment or my favorite investigate Bengahzi.

I didn't read the ex 19 month governor's blah on the speech, but it is hard to believe she could have come up with anything BEFORE the speech was over, therefore I presume it is her usual re-cycled, worn-out crapola.

Unfortunately, they will try - and succeed in many ways. One: the voting machine issue (switching votes from D to R (and lately also in reverse) has STILL not been taken care of after all these years.
      Two: they are redistricting furiously
Three: now they are also going after the electoral votes by trying the states to agree that even if a candidate has the most votes in any particular state, if he/she does not have the majority of the districts, he/she will not get those electoral votes.
Four: they have been disenfranchising voters in this last election like never before. I believe I read somewhere that over SIXTY MILLION voters were not allowed to vote for some type of technicality or another.
Five: in Red states, they have been closing/moving polling places and limiting voting hours in districts that tend to vote D (but not in those that tend to vote R)
These odds are almost insurmountable, especially now with both Senate as well as House being R.

There will not be 5 million new voters as a result of this. There will be zero new voters as a result of this. This is not amnesty, and this does not grant citizenship. For some reason, Sarah is wearing a Jewish star. Are we expecting a flood of Israeli immigrants? It's not a Jewish holiday. Sarah gives her usual mean-girl impression of an insult comedian. When Don Rickles did it, it was funny. When Sarah does it, she looks and sounds immature. She looks as if she is filled with hate and anger.

When Sarah mentioned that the illegal immigrants will now be getting free health care that we are all paying for, that it time for a good laugh at her hypocrisy. She and her family crossed the border and entered Canada for the purpose of getting free health care, which was something that they were not entitled to as US citizens. Yes, Chuck Heath took his family into Canada for the purpose of getting something for nothing. Sounds illegal to me.

I'm not watching any part of that bitch's tirade. Let her bitterness consume her until it kills her. It would suit me just fine.

Watched part of the video also, too. Here's a two handed big middle finger back at ya, Sarah.

Why anyone would watch a video put out there by Sarah Palin is beyond me. She's not worth your time folks. Ignore her! That pisses her off more than anything! She lends nothing to a conversation!

I can't watch it, sorry. But did she again say that she wanted to watch him get spanked?

Bristol wanted to give the middle finger to voters on DWTS for not liking her. She thought winning the mirror ball trophy was like a big middle finger. Sadly for her, the voters gave her the middle finger as she was eliminated.

I was furious when I read that the three "big" networks (and, of course, Fox) were not carrying President Obama's brief address. When I read that their reason was the "political" nature of the speech I was even more furious. One of our local stations, an affiliate of I'm-not-sure which network, had GOP senators/representatives on with their "reactions" at 5:15 pm (est), almost three hours before the speech was scheduled. And the stations thought President Obama's speech was going to be "too political"! THERE IS NO LIBERAL MEDIA out there anymore except, of course, for sites like IM, but no national media.

I also read that Univision, the Hispanic cable network, which was doing the Latin music awards last night, planned to interrupt the program for the president's speech. They also, apparently, get a huge audience for these annual awards programs. Just a little irony there for all those conservatives who fear people from different places, especially if they might have different faces.

Beaglmom: I watched President Obama's wonderful speech on MSNBC - Rachel Maddow's show - cable TV. President Obama outdoes the Republicans every step of the way! They seem to forget he was elected twice and that the majority of Americans do IN FACT like him.

I swear that U.S. Congress group of Republicans are nothing more than haters and racists! They've forgotten how to even be civil!

I am amazed at the Republicans' disconnect, Anon 8:48. I think it is because they live in their own little FOX-bubble where they repeat the same lies back and forth to each other and think because they never hear the dissenting voices that everyone thinks like they do. Our President won twice despite every dirty trick the Republicans tried. And when they didn't win elections, they threw tantrums and sulked and wouldn't play nice or share. What a bunch of babies.

That Woman and her ilk have no class & just think about it, she and her followers, ESPECIALLY Mccain thought she was VP material..that low-class-thug POS?
Now, for what we've seen over the years, everything around that woman evolves around giving the middle finger, prostitution, lying, and living off for FREE, etc etc etc. BUT, her "heart soars with pride!"

Sarah Palin If I Was President Questions And Answers

Question: Sarah, how would you solve emigration?

Sarah: Well for one thing instead of giving real Americans the "middle finger" I would build a bigger wall around our borders with those Mexico type people, ya" know put some barbed wire on top and towers and then of course man them with rifle carryin' patriotic troops who would shoot to kill if those people even attempt to cross!

Question: Hmm, that sounds familiar, do you mean like the Berlin Wall?

Sarah: Well ahh, sort of but I don't think the wall needs to be quite as aah, tall.

Question:What would be your plan for the illegals that are already here?

Sarah: Ship 'em back! go door to door look'n , round 'em up , put 'em on a big old bus and send 'em back! Furthermore we could have a special "hotline" set up for people to call so they can tip us off on where to find 'em and as a reward you may get ,,oh a hundred bucks off you taxes or something."Cause these ILLEGAL lawbreakers are dangerous! Taki'n jobs and stealing... remember the frito bandito? well no joke there.

Question: Excuse me but that sounds an eentsy bit like Nazi Germany and i see your wearing your Jewish Star necklace, one more thing, how would all this be paid for?

Sarah: Out of that uhmm special government fund from the Department Of Law!

Questioner: To bad you don't hold any office nor will ever hold one again.

Sarah: Hey! I don't need a title to make a difference! I have facebook and SPC! and i'm "hot" also too!

I so love our POTUS! He outwits and outsmarts the Republicans every step of the way. If they continue to negate this issue they have zero hopes in 2016. Shit or dear -the Mexicans, blacks and Asians will continue to be against them!

If they shut the government down, try to impeach President Obama, take him to Court and continue maligning him - this do nothing group of Republicans in the U.S. Congress will FAIL! They are nothing more than racists and very ugly Americans!

Okay, as noted in Salon article, the idiot on Hannity says, “If I were Obama I’d put all 11 million of these folks on boats and send them back to Mexico." But Hannity reminds her we are separated by land border. Palin responds, “Sean you're just wrong on that. I've been to Mexico many times and I can tell you it has excellent beaches. How can you have beaches and not an ocean?
OMG, please someone get this crazy beeyotch off the public grid.

It took 15 minutes for such a great communicator as Preseident Obama to put into words an immigration plan, and hours later the GOP is STILL all over the place without coherent thoughts, and of ourse all we got out of palin's long-ass "speech" is something about the middle finger...TSK TSK TSK

Bizarre and rather disgusting how she plastered her entire face with that orange makeup base but forgot how it would look in contrast to the color of her throat.
