Wonkette provided part of a transcript, but I fleshed it out because apparently I am just that much of a glutton for punishment.

Hey friends! Y’know, back in the 1990s, Bill Clinton said that he wanted abortion to be safe, legal, and rare. Well, things really have changed since then, this is so unfortunate now — it appears as if Democrats, most Democrats, they want abortion to be safe, legal, and…celebrated? Mmmm.
Feminists, lately, who are in favor of abortion, they’re encouraging women to write or speak publicly and glowingly about how great having an abortion is, how great it was for them and their careers. My goodness, I find this really, really sad. It's dark. It's tragic in itself. Mmm, very sad.
In the past, even those in favor of abortion knew that it's a tragic event, not something to be celebrated like a rite of passage.
Look I know from personal experience how difficult it is when you find yourself in less than idill (sic) circumstances and you are pregnant. (Yep, it's called the Wite-Out solution.)
I know the strain it can have on you. On your family, On your career. So I can sympathize with women who find themselves in THAT situation. I know what she's going through.
But I also know that you will never regret choosing life. (You KNOW that? What, do you have crystal balls or something?)
In the sunset of your life, when you look back on all your choices that you made, and all of the things that you have accomplished you will never regret giving life to your children. I promise you they'll be your greatest joy. (And boy we all know how much a Sarah Palin promise is worth, don't we kids?)
I've never met anyone at their end of their life regrets having their kids. (What, is she hanging out in old folk's homes and critical care units these days?) But I have heard of many people who regret snuffing the life out of their child. (Okay for the record, abortion does not entail choking a baby to death.)
You know a final not for these would be feminists. They're not real feminists, They're not pro-women when they're celebrating women snuffing the life out of , say the youngest sisters in our society. (Wait, what?)

No a real feminist is someone who fights for women to have real choices. (She does realize it's called the "pro-choice" movement right?) And that means having the choice to keep your child and pursue a career. Or give life to your child and allow another family to raise that child and then pursue your career. (Actually Planned Parenthood supports all of these choices as well. So her idea of having MORE choices is to do away with one of the choices offered by the pro-choice movement. Yeah okay.)
Having children is really a part of so many women's lives obviously. (But not ALL women's lives. Or does she simply not get that?) And in this day and age with the amazing technology we have that transcends the old office structure, right in the corporate world or in the big or small business world, women shouldn't have to sacrifice her career to raise a child.
You may take a break, if you will, to spend that valuable time with a child but you don't have to sacrifice your career and never go back in order to give life to a child.
Building a culture of life which America needs. A culture of life where we respect the sanctity of innocent life. It means encouraging a world where career women can raise their children. It's something that everyone, from both sides of the political aisle, should get behind.
Mmm, and I hope and pray that America will.
God hearing Palin condemning women for making choices concerning their own bodies is like hearing Mike Huckabee or Chris Christie telling somebody that they should not be taking that second helping of pie.

Palin is losing it even more than usual. I am a feminist and am in touch with feminist thought, issues, politics, culture, etc. I know of no one anywhere,no one, who is glorifying abortion or celebrating it. Deciding to end a pregnancy is a difficult decision and anyone faced with this decision deserves respect and understanding. No one needs to hear someone bleating about how we need to build a culture of life, certainly not someone who seems to have done nothing to provide support financially or otherwise to women whose circumstances make parenthood difficult, someone who does nothing in other words to support what she claims to value.

They both know that their fathers feel trapped, and they hear this DAILY that they were not wanted. One of the girls is from one of those crazy evangelicals families, the other one lives in an agnostic family, where the father is super abusive. He has thrown the mother as well as the daughter against the wall, against bicycle stands, against the edge of a table. He has threatened the ten year old that he will throw her from the fourth floor balcony if she keeps on 'making him upset' (i.e. thinking independently and not simply taking his word for gospel, or simply not reacting fast enough to what he says). She and her mother live in terror every day, but since he has all the money, and he keeps them sheltered from others, the mother cannot leave him. DeleteFirst of all, I work in a school in a city with a very high level of poverty, and I can tell you there are LOTS of women who should NOT have had children. I've seen far too many cases where the woman just keeps popping out baby after baby and neglects them all.
ReplyDeleteFor some, it's a way of trying to hold on to whatever baby daddy of the moment is helping her produce the children. For others, it's a desperate attempt to find what they perceive as unconditional love. For still others, it's a way to earn money without working. And for many, it's a lack of knowledge about or access to contraception or reproductive health care. I've worked with far too many children who are raising themselves, some as young as 5 years old who are doing cooking, cleaning, laundry, and caring for younger siblings. I've also seen too many families that are now in the third or fourth generation of teen mothers who simply don't know how to be a parent because their mothers and grandmothers were all teen mothers themselves.
Secondly, that crap about not hurting a woman's career certainly doesn't apply to the millions of women holding down minimum wage jobs. They don't have a 'career'; they have a job (or two or three) that barely pays the bills, and they can't afford to take time off the deliver yet another mouth to feed.
Palin, of course, is clueless about what most women's lives are like and has never had a job that required her to show up 40 hours a week and punch a time clock. Most women don't have the luxury of posting videotape of their ignorant nonsense or giving the same speech they've done a dozen times, and then sitting at home to count the money as the checks from their pathetic fans come rolling in.

Anyway, if it weren't for the largess of the Food Bank these kids and their infants wouldn't eat. There are many lost youth here and more than a few die or "disappear" each year, often leaving the infants behind in dumpsters or worse, in the river.

Every friend who gave up their baby struck a deal with an unknown adoptive parent and is scrabbling to know if that child is well, was properly loved and educated. Most live with a great unknown and hope for the day their baby will contact them and let them know they were loved and it and it turned out well. I, frankly, hesitate to believe adoption is a good alternative.

What about babies with physical defects and disabilities? Do you ever visit families and give them a night off? Sure you are a mom of DS, but you are a millionnaire who can afford a nanny and support. What about families without support, money and health insurance?
Trying to turn pro-life into a 'feminist career choice' argument is slick. Maybe there are some women out there who have had abortions because it would interfere in their rising fame and careers, but the majority are those who have to choose between a baby and putting food on the table or having to come to terms with a mentally or physically suffering deformed baby, or are single and have no other recourse. Telling a young girl she can 'have it all' (career/vibrant life/and a baby) is unrealistic. She will have to make terrible sacrifices if she keeps it, and you Sarah Palin could care less. Go make your dirty money; you apparently have no conscience about anything.
It's Christmas and you're all literally living in the past instead of doing what Sarah is, spending quality family and friend time with festivities. Who's jealous of who now?

I know because my husband and I attempted to adopt in the late 1970s and there were so few white babies available. The religious right learned most women between the ages of 18-22 chose abortion if they couldn’t provide for unplanned pregnancies. These were women who were choosing to continue on with their education and create lives for themselves and their partners to create families they could actually afford to feed and educate. There are cases where the fetus that the woman is carrying is so deformed that it cannot possible live when delivered in 9 months. Yes, it is possible to carry a dead fetus for months, risking toxemia and disease for the mother. Why not spare her the agony, Sarah, or have you no heart? It is easy to moralize and tell others how to lead their lives. If you did any kind of work which brought you in contact with people who are truly in need and in a difficult situation in their lives (not the politician with a pregnant daughter, angling for the VP nomination) maybe you might have some sympathy for others.
Always interesting when you attack one, you end up attacking millions. Did you really just imply a young woman who is married has trouble finding love? When a woman chooses to bear a child or when a woman chooses to adopt another woman's child, she accepts the responsibility to care for that child, teach and raise the child to be a productive, useful person who finds the same joy in life. The parents prepare the child to grow and mature and become a mature, contributing person.
ReplyDeleteI'll say it as plainly as I can. I don't care who gave birth to Trig. Sarah has chosen to be his designated mother, whether she gave birth to him or not. She IS Trig's mother, and that makes her responsible for raising and teaching to boy to realize his full potential. Instead, we saw a child with badly crossed eyes rarely wearing his glasses. After six years, Sarah finally realized that Trig's eyes needed corrective surgery. The ideal time for that surgery was between 2-4 years. Trig lost out on seeing clearly for the first 6 years of his life.
Trig lost out on a lot more than just seeing. He lacks the therapy that would have strengthened his facial muscles, allowing him to form words more clearly, eat and drink. In his last photo, he holds a toddler's sippy cup. Sarah bragged that Trig never ate a Cheerio. The Cheerios are fun for kids to pick up. It trains them to see the Cheerios, develop fine motor skills using fingers and thumb, convey the item to the mouth, there are so many things to learn with that simple piece of cereal and Trig has been deprived of all of it. Kids learn to do this at 6-7 months, not 6 to 7 years of age.
Sarah chose to be Trig's mother. Great! Now, the final paragraph to Sarah's pro-life rant should be a promise to keep on being pro-life throughout Trig's life. Sarah is responsible for raising him, feeding him, clothing him, housing him, teaching him-- or providing all of this for him, the same way that most mothers do for their children. Pro-life does not stop with birth. It continues until the child has grown and matured and becomes ready to take his own place in the world.
For all the people that cannot accept the truth that 3 grown adults have jobs and are independent just shows how manipulative bloggers destroy gullible minds like yours. Sad statement on you

It was not one's right to take his life. Why haven't you defended the culture of life when it comes to Garner?
How about a 12 year old boy playing with a toy, shot at point blank range, not by other kids but by a policeman who didn't even take the time to warn the boy or determine the situation. Why haven't you spoken out for that boy's life? Isn't it as precious as the life of your children?
I still don't understand your Facebook post. Are you for torture or against it? If you are for torture, that is cruel and designed to hurt people. A culture of life does not support torture or murder? Are you for torture and killing terrorists? Don't tell me that you are a liberal that would like to find a peaceful solution. That would mean that you would have to embrace a culture of life for all men and women, or are you selective in whose life you cherish and whose life you disregard.
Sarah, you cannot apply pro-life feelings to the unborn and then quit. Once they are born, you should be for every program that supplies food, medicine, schooling, housing and anything else that child needs to grow and mature, even if his own parents cannot provide all of it themselves. Once you say that you are pro-life, you are for the life of that person from the moment of conception, birth, growth and throughout their entire life. It means being pro-life for all, not a select few.
Sarah herself credits her mother and her sisters for helping her to raise her brood when she didn't have the time to care for them. She also credits Todd, who worked 2 on/2off on the slope and could provide childcare for two weeks at a time. She made a big deal of Bristol being able to have Tripp because she had help from aunts and grandma to help her raise the child. This woman has never been 100% responsible for caring for her kids so she needs to not presume to tell other women how to handle child bearing and rearing.

Her mannerism, her affect and way of speaking is something that my high school friends seem to grow out of when they got a little older. Taking a few years off send her back down the ladder. Sarah's job ethic consisted of quitting her job as governor when she swore an oath when she took the job. All jobs are not left that easily, and in her case, people won't be taking her back as governor. Some women cannot afford to take a couple of weeks of maternity leave. Sarah has no idea how most people live.
There are also circumstances where the woman should not carry the child, for reasons of health. Ask pro-life Karen Santorium why she had an abortion at 20 weeks. It was to save the life of the mother. No, Sarah, it is not One Size Fits All. Do some homework. please.
