American cardinal is blaming feminism for shortage of Catholic priests. Wait, what?

"Get away from me harlots!"
Courtesy of International Business Times:

American Cardinal Raymond Burke, a known conservative and one of Pope Francis’ biggest critics, says the “radical feminist movement” has left Roman Catholic men feeling “marginalized” since the 1960s. His comments were made in an interview published Jan. 5 with Matthew James Christoff of “The New Emangelization,” a Catholic men’s ministry.

“Men are often reluctant to become active in the Church. The feminized environment and the lack of the Church’s effort to engage men has led many men to simply opt out,” Burke said. He points to the popularity of pornography, saying it promotes extramarital sex, a “materialistic and consumer-focused” society that pushes parents to work longer hours and the introduction of altar girls as reasons for men to feel reluctant to be active Catholics.

“The introduction of girl servers also led many boys to abandon altar service. Young boys don’t want to do things with girls. It’s just natural. The girls were also very good at altar service. So many boys drifted away over time,” Burke said, adding that this contributed to the declining number of priestly vocations in the church.

Altar girls have existed since 1983, when the church removed its ban on girls helping priests at the altar.

You know here's a thought, and I will just throw this out there, but wouldn't this problem solve itself if the Catholic church simply started allowing women to become priests?

Or is it simply better to continue to blame women for every problem that arises, like the religion has been doing since its inception?

I guess he'd rather that the young boys do things with priests......

      Translated, it's :

"Young boys look after superiority over the rest of the congregation. Including girls at the altar has made altar service less about male competition for a position of power and superiority, so we lose all the competitive boys that would otherwise had gone on to become priests, after altar service had given them a taste of how powerful and respected a priest actually is.

Besides, the girls are better at it than the boys, so it drives the boys away. Next, we'll have to ordain girls !!!

And don't forget a fanatical humble catholic woman makes children just like her, indoctrinated just like we want. With feminists, we lose the male power-hungries at the altar, but we also lose our authority over all the youths !"

Tradition and belief are that women must remain silent. I hope you realize what this signifies. I don't tell other people to remain silent. I'm glad the secular world offers freedom of expression and freedom of speech, when the religious communities don't believe in it. It's very difficult to believe the American Constitution derived from religious men, because it kinds of sound hypocritical if they were Christian.

Isn't this the guy that Pope Francis has moved to Rome for a different position and one where he will be under his watchful eyes? Think so!

Over time, I see the mainstream churches have less influence. Though if wouldn't hurt the Catholic church to allow for women priests and women in higher positions. Nor for priests to marry. I'd also be in favor of same sex marriages among priests. Make the church about adult, consensual, loving, caring and nurturing relationships.

Anyway, my main and other concern is the rise of American Dominionists or Christian Reconstructionists.

They're more action oriented and turning the USA into their kind of Taliban-style theocracy.

I'm not religious. I hope the Catholic church does more for women and to protect children. I more so fear a USA Dominionists or Christian Reconstructionists future, yet I'll fight against it. I fear them more than I fear the Catholics.

Me too. There are many liberal Catholics (why they remain Catholic at all is beyond me actually, except the Catholic Church is progressive in some areas -- but still totally backwards on others).

But there are NO liberal Dominionists. Dominionism is backwards and regressive in ALL areas.

Those damned women, enticing priests since the beginiing on time, or at least since the RCC decided popes and priests couldn't be married.

PS no one thinks this as crazy as an ex catholic.

Gryphen, could you please do a post on this ? I'm French. We are deeply perturbed by what we see as an attack from fanatical Islam against all freedom of press and thinking.

Charlie Hebdo publishes satirical drawing. Caricatures of all faiths, of all opinions, tasteless or tasteful. It can be said to be ranging from moderate left to further left, but the left and the right are caricatured with equal acerbic wit. Same for religions : none gets a pass.

Five of its most prestigious illustrators died yeterday, including its director of publication. Five further journalists died. The policeman affected to the protection of the staff died. A street policeman who intervened died. Four people are still fighting for their lives, and eleven are in serious condition in hospitals.

Charlie Hebdo has been under threats since 2006, because it dared to publish a drawing of the prophet of Islam.

Their answer to yesterday shootings : a drawing by one of the assassinated journalists, showing El-Baghdadi wishing ".. and mostly, great health" with the caption "Ah, best wishes, by the way".

More likely so many of the altar boys were preyed on by the pedophile priests that none of them want to become priests. Or, now that the pedophile priests' actions are receiving so much publicity, the potential market is drying up for those pedophiles who were thinking of going into the priesthood.

Bingo. It's been a traditional "calling" for pedophiles and gays who knew the church was a safe haven. Now that gays don't have to hide and the church is making a show of not being a haven for pedophiles, it sounds like the seminaries are empty. Boo-hoo. Another possibility is that people's awareness is changing and they just don't want to associate themselves with an institution as vile as that one has been for the past 18 centuries or so.

Wait a second, I thought priests and nuns were "called by God" to serve their church. Did HE (or SHE) stop calling?? Maybe it is an omen?

H/T to Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, who posted at 5:28 pm.

In his own perverted (pun intended) way, Cardinal Burke is right: after all, what pedophile who prefers boys only would be interested in a system that might permit altar girls? By protesting too much, he's 'giving himself away' here, lol. In view of the misogynistic history of this organization that is once again blaming women for its own self-imposed troubles, one might merely ask, "seriously, what else is new?"

The presence of women and girls in traditional male roles within the church are an abomination! Good Grief! Predators like him usuallyhunt in the dark. Now that a flashlight has been placed on him, he can’t hunt the way he used to. Now that women and girls are brought into the environment, male predators like him -- that once benefited from the unbalanced all male environment -- are now left with a reduced pool of victims to prey upon. His cognitive dissonance is forcing him (as a predator) to blame women and girls for victimizing his position of authority. He’s also blaming women for reducing his helpless pool of prey instead of acknowledging and holding himself accountable for his wrongdoing.

Many years ago when I went through a divorce, my sister LOANED me a paperback called "Lesbian Nuns". I believe it was written in the 60's or 70's, and whoa doggies! Those were some pretty naughty nuns. And they were all pictured and named. And they told on their local priests, too. This has been a sick bunch for a very long time.

My 8th grade nun teacher was a pedophile/pederast, she targeted young girls who had very low self esteem and abused them. One time she held all of us girls back at recess so she could check our bra sizes, blouses removed copping feels the whole time.
She made a BIG mistake targeting one of the girls, a wild one who's dad was a HUGE donor to the local church. The nun beat her up in class in front of all of us and when the girl ran out of the room, the nun was so crazed she followed. Being CA, the school was open air and the girl ran around the building and into the classroom's back door. We locked the doors and the girl called her dad from the phone in the classroom. That nun was gone that very day and everything was hushed up PRONTO. We'd been complaining all year but NO ONE believed us about her. My dad saw her several years later and she had come out as a lesbian. The whole organization is sick and twisted from top to bottom.

This joker has a cushy job with lots of perks, but he's too stupid to stop running his mouth. Hope his next demotion is swabbing floors at a remote church entirely populated by female altar servers.

If 10 year old girls can drive boys away from the priesthood, then God sure is falling down on the job.

The Catholic Church he is describing sounds more like a mens club than a church. His comments about porn remind me of an ad a local pastor is running on tv, called "keep calm and marry on", where he claims that the temptations facing modern marriage are worse than anything Hitler did! Seriously, he uses that comparison in a TV commercial.

If altar girls are driving men out of the Catholic Church, then what is driving the nuns away? Isn't there a shortage of women going into the nunneries also?

My brother-in-law was an altar boy and headed for the priesthood............then he heard about evolution and that was the end of it. Good thing, because he would have been a terrible priest, as he really likes women. A LOT.

There's sooo much wrong with that statement. Maybe if these guys are so intimidated by strong women they should look at themselves first to find the cause of the problem. Or, just maybe, they don't want to be upstaged or emasculated whilst wearing their guilded, flowing frocks and indulging in flowery pomp and circumstance??

Raymond Burke is an idiot. A disgusting idiot. An disgusting and evil idiot. He is not representative of the Catholic Church, which is probably why Pope Francis sidelined him.

But he was clever enough to cover up clerical sex abuse in his diocese in Wisconsin years ago, the bastard.

The Devil wears Prada, and so does the Pope. While the cardinals are holed up in the chapel picking the next Pope, all are measured before entering by a little taylor shiop owned by Prada Inc. They sell top of the line frillies and frocks and even shoes. Can you imagine getting measured for custom fit one of a kind custom shoes in several styles? They interviewed this guy while waiting for the purple haze to lighten up and I was laughing hysterically,

This guy has a projection problem. Probably thinks Sandusky is a swell drinking partner.

It is also traditional to believe that women are to be kept silent especially regarding religion. I'm afraid more and more women now believe that trading in your rights will make for a better society. I'm so saddened. I do believe this will happen as the free Nations are slowly becoming religious with more and more immigration.
