Courtesy of TPM:
On "State of the Union," CNN's Dana Bash asked Huckabee about a chapter in his book, "God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy," in which the former governor wrote about his relationships with gay friends.
"I don’t shut people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view. I don’t drink alcohol, but gosh, a lot of my friends — maybe most of them — do. I don’t use profanity, but believe me I’ve got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like classical music and ballet and opera. It’s not my cup of tea." Huckabee said on CNN. "I hope the party doesn’t change its overall view, but the very fact that I talk about relationships I have with friends who are gay, indicate that I’m not a person who shuts everybody out around me who disagrees."
Huckabee said that for him, same sex marriage is a religious issue.
"This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue, unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it’s really not my place to say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to evolve.’ It’s like asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped-shrimp in their deli. ... or asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him or to have dogs in his backyard," he said. "We’re so sensitive to make sure we don’t offend certain religions, but then we act like Christians can’t have the convictions that they’ve had for over 2,000 years."
Ah the old I have gay/black/female friends so I simply cannot be a homophobe/racist/misogynist argument. I know it well.
Actually the facts are that even without a newly written version of scripture Huckabee seems to have little difficulty ignoring the biblical rules that he doesn't like.
For instance this interview was conducted on a Sunday, the Sabbath. And since this was to promote his new book he was clearly working.
So I guess he simply ignores Leviticus 23:3.
Are his clothes made up of two different kinds of material? Well I guess Leviticus 19:19 was just a damn suggestion then wasn't it?
And what about Leviticus 20:10? When was the last time that Huckabee stoned an adulterer?
And he calls himself a man of God. Bullshit.
No Huckabee, like many hypocritical Christians, is simply using the Bible to provide cover for his own hateful prejudices.
But hey if he is serious about wanting an updated version of the scriptures, I am ready to start typing at a moment's notice.
I would dearly love to rewrite that horrid, pernicious, tome and replace with one that truly promotes love and acceptance.
Is Huckabee really likening cursing and classical music? Drinking and opera? Wow....
ReplyDeleteI think what he may be saying is that he's got Librul friends. See, rill murcans like Ted Nugent.. Ergo the edumicated libruls who don't like Ted Nugent like classical music and opera.
DeleteAs always, Gryphen, well said.
ReplyDeleteIt is a comment on our political discourse that Huckabee receives any attention at all from the MSM.
ReplyDeleteOl' Mike has a Pac, just like $carah's, and he uses it just like she does. He gave over $400,000 to relatives from the last one. Unlike her, he names the relatives and how much he paid them. What a scam. For a "man of the cloth" he is a low life.
DeleteIf the bible is his religious guide - fine by me. Legal marriage is a civil matter (thus) indeed political. Separation of church and state is one of the greatest gifts our founders provided. We need to work a lot harder at preserving it.
ReplyDeleteywc2
Exactly right. We give legal protection to couples in the form of rights to survivor benefits, medical decisions etc. The Christian bible as no relevance to our laws.
DeleteMarriage is a civil concern. Churches can make their own rules, but only for their adherents.
I was just coming here to say the same thing. You both said it better than I could have!
DeleteThere is no way this guy will win the nomination and I doubt he even wants it; but he sure wants to sell more books.
What did the Bible say about ballet?
ReplyDeleteI wonder what it says about humping the floor in a gorilla costume?
DeleteI wonder what the bible says about performing immoral songs with that douchebag Ted Nugent?
DeleteA Christian Hypocrite.....I'm Shocked
ReplyDeleteIt’s like asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped-shrimp in their deli. ... or asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him or to have dogs in his backyard,
ReplyDeleteActually, it's not that at all. It's entirely the opposite.
Huckabee and his side would allow the "Muslim" to prohibit his neighbor from having a dog in the backyard, and give the owner of the Jewish deli authority to prevent shrimp and bacon from being sold at all.
THIS ^^^^^!
DeleteNo one is asking Huckabee or any other person to marry someone of the same gender if they don't want to. We're only insisting that someone who DOES want to share their life with someone they love is permitted to do so, even if they happen to share the same body parts.
When laws start being passed that prohibit Huckabee from following the rites of his particular religion, then he can complain that his rights are being infringed upon. Until that happens, he should mind his own business and stay out of other people's lives.
Plus 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000!
DeleteBut surely as someone who believes in the literal truth of all the Bible, Huckabee should not be eating shrimp bacon or any of the other forbidden foods?
DeleteWell done, Gryphen!
ReplyDeleteI really can't stand this hypocrite.
A funny story about Jethro Huckabee and his wife Jethrine...
When his time as governor of Arkansas was coming to a close, the Governor and his wife set up wedding registries at stores in Little Rock so that people could buy them gifts to outfit the new household they would need after leaving the Governor's mansion.

Is there a school somewhere that teaches Republicans how to succeed the magic of graft?
O/T, but lookout Wisconsin, your GOP leader is gonna gut your educational system in favor of sports. And this guy is a right wing, Kochsucking favorite on the presidential wannabe circuit, so imagine what he could do to the Federal budget!

This guy is a nasty human being and will never become POTUS. Plus, he's another supposed Christian (have heard him tell lies on his radio show!) that doesn't practice his teachings, is obese, unhealthy, unattractive and a typical Republican that is against women's rights!
ReplyDeleteHe wants a re-written Bible? Okay, how about this? DROP THAT F**KING OT! There. Half of it is GONE, including that Leviticus crap!
ReplyDeletePeople can choose to serve bacon wrapped shrimp or have dogs in their backyard.
ReplyDeleteBut being gay is not a choice, not matter how hard the Huckster & the fundies try to pretend it is.
~ Radley
Nobody would own a dog in HIS neighbourhood! His one son hanged a stray dog in the woods. How Christian is THAT? He had a son who tried to board a plane with a loaded weapon. Looks like he is porking up again. Isn't gluttony one of the "deadly sins"? Also, too since he enjoys preaching, maybe he should have a talk to his good buddy pedophile poopy pants Nugent? Huck is another grifter in the same vein as PayMe, just more successful at it.
ReplyDeleteSo he is palling around with drinkers and cussing mortals?
ReplyDeleteHuck. You are known by the company you keep.
And attempt to play music with poopy pants.....T. Nugent?
Jesus H........
What is wrong with practicing tolerance, but not acceptance? If I remember correctly, isn't that the philosophy of Jesus Christ?
ReplyDeleteorlin sellers
You do not remember correctly, orlin.
DeleteWell don't leave me hanging, Liz, what was that philosophy?
Deleteorlin sellers
Look it up, orlin.
DeleteLiz is not here to educate you.
NOpe, you do not remember correctly and you also fail to understand that the US of A is not a theocracy. The bible has no bearing on the rights of all Americans to be treated equally. Now you can hate me for not being white, or my friends for being gay all you want. But you cannot use your racism and bigotry to deny me my rights as an American citizen.
DeleteOh yeah, and fuck your bibull and your imaginary beings, see I can say that as long as I don't interfere with your right to practice whatever religion you want.
Until somebody proves me wrong, I stand by my statement. Hell, I can say Liz is wrong and leave it at that.
DeleteBesides, I wasn't talking about the Bible, I was talking about a philosophy, the same way one would discuss the philosophy of Ghandi or Confucius.
If you are so fucking concerned about the rights of all Americans, let's hear your rant on Obama assassinating two American citizens without due process.
The fact is, you don't give a shit about rights, yyou only care about your pathological putrid partisanship which is comparable to the larval phase of an earthworm.
orlin sellers
Orlin is a libertarian who thinks he is the smartest person in every room. He has a strong need to feel better than everyone else. I'm not sure how he decided to zero in on Gryphen's blog, but we are all worse off for it.
Delete12:21, forget it. It deliberately selects a subject then twists it according to whatever is most likely to create a response of anger. Until we TOTALLY IGNORE it, it won't go away.
DeleteAs an example, it once said something to the effect that tolerance without acceptance is useless, completely ignoring the fact that if we could just get people to BE tolerant, a huge portion of our problems would disappear. Now it is coming up with THIS crap,
which is coming at the thought(?) from the opposite direction.
IGNORE IT!
Leleand, what I said was "tolerance is not acceptance."
DeleteThat is absolutely true and it seems that is what Huckabee is saying. Similar to love the sinner, hate the sin.
As a matter of fact, this place could use a bit more tolerance.

Leland, you are right. It gets it's jollies this way. Unfortunately, not everyone visiting here realizes it's just masturbating.
DeleteHe HAS to masturbate due to his experiences with yeasty vaginas.
DeleteThe true extent of murder, rape, pillaging, destruction, and religious sanctioning of crime in the bible is extensive and literally shocking.

Some of the thousands of Christian sects believe every word of the bible is literally true, and must be observed perfectly. Not many of them though are willing to sell their daughter as a sex slave, kill someone for working on the Sabbath, or for striking a parent.
Some Christians will say, "well,,all that stuff in the Old Testament doesn't apply any more, so you can't say that's relevant any more"
That still leaves verses in the NT about condoning slavery, forbidding marriage to divorced women, forcing women to be subservient to men , and a whole host of other damaging and harmful mandates.
Among the worst of the NT's precepts , are all the strictures on women, which stem from Paul of Tarsus, who's letters in the decades following the Christ's death were designated "divine" by church fathers.
As a result, women are told to keep their mouth shut in church, cover their heads, dress "modestly", keep house, bear children in pain, submit to their husbands as unto God, and to submit to sex whenever the husband wants, regardless of her feelings or health.
Paul's letters have been the root of so much suffering through the millenia, as despots, bastards, and psychopaths have used them to literally bludgeon their congregations and wives into a state of virtual slavery and despair.
A good friend of mine committed suicide as the result of an abusive fanatic Christian husband, because she was so brainwashed, she felt she had no other option.
The Bible is a real page turner, and every page contradicts the previous page.
ReplyDeleteThe Constitution was written by slave owners and people who didn't think women should have the vote; in fact you had to not only be white, but a land owner also, if you wanted to vote.
The worship of both the Bible and the Constitution is never ending.
Primitive, hate filled human beings have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a more enlightened world. Hate is to comforting.
And let's remember by the term "land owner" they meant to own land outright, no mortgage or loans against the property.
DeleteHe can be prejudiced against gays all he wants.
ReplyDeleteWhat he cannot do is expect the USA to have laws that discriminate against people because they're gay.
He also cannot expect other people to be quiet about his publicly-expressed prejudice.
DeleteTrue, but I'd rather people be quiet because, sheesh, the less I hear about or from Mike Huckabee the better.
DeleteAnother "salad bar Christian"...
ReplyDeleteI'll have some of this, and some of this, but ohhh... I don't like that but take some of this but not that...
A "Christian" of convenience.
"I have friends that drink and smoke" (yeah, but you're not trying to keep them from drinking or smoking you duplicitous bastard)
Randall, can you name a flavor of Christianity (or any scripture-based religion) that isn't a cafeteria plan?
DeleteThe technical name is 'branch' or 'denomination' but it's a thousands year old tradition that simply means "We will kill you in the name The Lord if you disobey THIS tenet of The Good Book, but we've all agreed to ignore THAT other tenet."
Salad bar xtian! Good one!
DeleteDoes Mike Huckabee Really Believe Serving Gays Is Like Forcing Jews to Sell 'Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp'?
ReplyDelete...That discrimination, however, is what religious right activists will be calling for presidential candidates to support under the guise of "religious liberty." They want consciences clauses so that town, county and city clerks can opt out of marrying gays, as they want pharmacists to able to opt-out of birth control and florists to have the right to say no to a lesbian couple.

ReplyDeleteNew National Poll Reveals Serious Liabilities for Hillary
Supporters of Hillary Clinton should be very concerned about the popularity of Clinton’s ideas and her ability to win the Presidency.
...Republicans are lining up to run for President in 2016 because they know something most Democrats don’t know or don’t want to admit: Hillary Clinton is a weak and highly vulnerable Presidential candidate whose positions on issues do not resonate well with voters.
http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/new-national-poll-reveals-serious-liabilities-hillary
Hmmmm, and this isn't Fox or a right leaning publication...
HIllary is not weak and the GOP is scared of her. I would love to have the prosperity of another 8 yrs of a President Clinton.
DeleteHey! Maybe the "staffer" who wrote that article can get Ralph Nader to run!
Delete/sarcasm
My sense of the macabre would really to hear from those 'gay friends' of Huckabee's (and those of Palin, for that matter) ...then I think I'd like to toss them all under a microscope.
ReplyDeleteHe also shaves and cuts his hair, the bibull says he shouldn't do that. Plus, is that belly the sign of the sin of guttony?
ReplyDeleteThat belly is a sign that he has to post his M4M Personals in the Chubby section of Craigslist.
DeleteFat like Jerry Falwell. Come to think of it, so is Chris Christie. Living high on the corporate dime.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if his swearing, hard-drinking, ballet-watching friends would still like him if he tried to pass/enforce laws to keep them from equal rights. Are those swearing friends allowed to be married to people of their choice? Can they be sure store-owners will respect their rights to shop?
ReplyDeleteHey Huckster!
ReplyDeleteThe bible tells me so!
Proverbs 23:2 -
And put a knife to your throat If you are a man of great appetite.
Stop it, Gryphen, don't play dumb! You know that when The Hucskster refers to The Bible he means the one true literal word of God delivered by Jeebus - in hardcover and paperback editions, also too - in English, in its perfect, final and immutable form. God says in the book of Pilates (17:76) "They ain't no draft version of the Bible!"
ReplyDelete"This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue."
ReplyDeleteThe problem is it shouldn't be a political issue at all. It should be JUST a biblical issue, a matter of personal conscience and church teaching and practice.
No one is interfering with Huckabee's and his fundamentalist friends' beliefs. He and they are free to keep the 'biblical issues' as matters of personal conscience and church teaching and practice. He and they just need to stop taking their beliefs into civil life and trying to deny equality and freedom to others.
Fundamentalists are making progress in redefining religious freedom and separation of church and state. It scares me that I see little effort to stop them.
ReplyDeleteMight we remind him: Gluttony is one of the 7 Deadly Sins.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see a trim, Huckabee, whose children do not torture animals, and who acknowledged that Nugent is more disgusting by his own standards than Beyoncé, I MIGHT consider his advice on... something...I just can't think of what, but until that time, I will teach my children to be completely non-religious, swear any time I please, and let my little girl admire Beyoncé, Katy Perry, or any other independent, self-actualized woman.
Some of my best friends are right wing nut jobs who thump the bible and make excuses for their right wing nutjobbery, Hey Huck, you hunk of a man, since you mentioned it, drop the guns god gravy jellow and fixodent and rewrite the Bible yourself to exclude gays, blacks, hispanics, muslims, godless heathens and witches. If you start now, I'm guessing you'll git er done in about ten years! Your problem is you're waiting for others to do it when, clearly, you're the authority on all things Gay and God.
