Authorities say a 3-year-old boy got ahold of a handgun from his mother's purse and fired just one shot that wounded both his parents.
Albuquerque police say the toddler apparently reached for an iPod but found the loaded weapon.
The bullet first struck his father in the buttock and then hit the shoulder of his mother, who is eight months pregnant.
His 2-year-old sister was present but unhurt.
Local media reports say police believe Saturday's shooting was accidental.
Accidental? Are they sure?
Unless they are suggesting that a gun, even in the hands of a child, could cause physical harm or even death to several people accidentally with no intention to do so by the person holding the weapon.
But that can't be right.
After all that flies in the face of every NRA mailer I have ever seen. I mean guns in the hands of good people only hurt bad guys, right?
The police by the way are investigating as to whether any charges of negligence should be filed (They should.), and the children have, at least temporarily, been removed from the home.
There's no question that the mother is guilty of leaving a loaded firearm with the safety off in reach of a toddler.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what penalty she should pay for leaving that handgun in such easy reach of a child, but at very least, she should be forced to take a gun safety class, and be fined
Even when my sons were in their early teens, my firearms were in a secure location, UNLOADED, safeties on , and the ammo was kept in separately under lock and key.
Well, if she's caucasian she'll pay not penalty. If she's not caucasian, then the child can be charged with whatever they want to charge him with.
DeleteThe same stupid question came up about a week ago when a small child shot and killed his baby brother with the loaded gun on the bed in the room with the baby.
Gee, who do you charge when a small child picks up a loaded gun and pulls the trigger, because that's what he sees on television all the time or on the games his parents play?
It seems obvious to me but authorities do not want to be seen holding adults responsible for their own carelessness.

Hmmmmmm, looking at charging the parents--huh? They are either black or poor or didn`t have the hundred weapon minimum to be exempt from prosecution.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe also because the mom is pregnant and we all know the unborn is more important that the post-born, right?

The saddest part, the 2 parents, 2 kids, 2 large dogs, and a Grandma can't afford rent and are staying in a flea bag hotel and yet Mommy spent money on a gun the day before,
ReplyDeleteAlso Dad is felon and cannot own any, hmmmm, I guess that was his economic plan for getting out of the hotel.
But don't worry Mom is breeding another child she can't afford.

ReplyDeleteI still don't understand how these little kids can fire a handgun. I'm a small framed woman but with some upper body strength. I was given a handgun to "try". I couldn't slide the top thingey to load the gun. I had trouble holding the gun with one hand. And when I fired it the noise made me cringe and the damn thing practically flew out of my hands. How do little kids do it?

I am officially sick to my stomach.
All you need to defend yourself against a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun.
ReplyDeleteThey removed the children from the home? Why didn't they remove the GUN from the home??!!
ReplyDeleteWhat are they waiting for? Arrest the mother and get the kid professional help and a foster home. I always knew I could reach into my mom's purse or diaper bag and find a loaded roll of lifesaver's candy and maybe a lipstick. A loaded gun? No way in hell.
ReplyDeleteWhy is a mother carrying a loaded gun in her purse in the first place? Safety isn't the answer, just ask her or her husbands other buttock. What year is this again?
So, dad was shot in the brains. BULLSEYE!!
ReplyDeleteWow, for people who obviously believe themselves to be intelligent, informed, and open minded all of you seem to be very judgmental, narrow minded, uninformed, uneducated and frankly ignorant. It is obvious there are bigger issues at play here and that the parents were negligent and need to charged but to lump all gun owners into the same class as these irresponsible parents certainly shows your true character.
