Courtesy of HuffPo:
A rash of tragic child shootings in Texas over the weekend has led local law enforcement to appeal for gun safety.
"I beg of you, help us to keep from having to respond to tragedy that can be prevented," Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said at a news conference Monday, after deputies responded to the third fatal accidental shooting involving children in four days.
"I don't want another family to even have to fathom going through this terrible experience," he added.
All three shootings occurred within Harris County, within the greater Houston metropolitan area. In response to the tragedies, the Sheriff's Office and Harris County Constable Ron Hickman reminded the public that their offices distribute free gun locks.
"If we can prevent one person from being killed or hurt from firearm accidents through the distribution of these free gun locks, then we have met our challenge," Hickman said in a statement Monday.
This is indefensible that so many children are killed due to the irresponsibility of the adults that are supposed to be keeping them safe. And ironically with the weapons that were undoubtedly purchased to increase their families safety.
Of these three none were older than six years old. The youngest only three.
How hard is it really to keep guns out of the hands of small children?
you see children learn from what they see and hear, let us learn that we need to teach our children the true meaning of life and how it can make things so easy for all of us.
ReplyDeleteThis is TexASS we are talking about. Aren't their kids born knowing how to handle guns? Too bad the kids have to be the victims. You just can't fix STUPID.
ReplyDeleteAnd that doesn't include the 18 month old shot in the head by his 3 year old brother, among other NRA victories in the last week. I would think they were interested in keeping their future purchasers alive, but I guess only fetuses are important in GOP LaLaLand. I do hope they and Fox and Palin are proud of what their fear-mongering has wrought. This nation is now not safe for anyone. Time to get the Republicans out of office before it gets worse.
ReplyDeleteTo respond to this issue Texas will pass a law to arm all fetus with 9mm handguns while still in the womb.
ReplyDeleteThe only safe baby is an armed baby.
Does it seem that most of these "accidents" happen in the southern states? What is the problem, are they depending on God to watch over their kids? Maybe the reason the gop is against background checks is because it might reveal how many buyers are drop outs, or petty thieves, or have had "accidents" in their past. When a stupid person leaves a loded gun where a child can get to it, that is no accident, it is called PURE STUPIDITY.
ReplyDeleteI live in TN and these people here, not all of them, are God, guns and anti-gay through and through. I remember talking to a woman in 2000 about the upcoming election and she told me she just knew without a doubt that if Al Gore was elected, 'they' would come and take everyone's guns. People still believe that about every single Democratic candidate, every election. Somewhere along the way, it became ingrained in these peoples brains that being uneducated, but church going would solve all their problems.
DeleteThese are revengelicals answer to late term abortion. Have the kid, and if they are too difficult for you, especially around toilet training, give them a gun, problem solved. The kid meets Jesus; everyone is happy. They are truly blessed so no need for tears. Have a beer for the eternal happiness of the child.
DeleteDarwinism at its most brutal. The children lose because their parents are stupid.
ReplyDeleteIf it was truly Darwinism at work then the stupid parents would have died before they got a chance to breed. Regardless of the stupidity of the parents the offspring could have ended up with normal intelligence and not been gun humping idiots leaving loaded guns around for their offspring to off themselves with.
DeleteGun locks?! These people keep a round in the chamber because when a good guy needs to stop a bad guy, there's no time to rack one let only deal with an effin gun lock.
ReplyDeleteIn each of those cases, the adult responsible for recklessly or negligently allowing a child access to a gun needs to face criminal charges.
ReplyDeleteYes. And extended prison time. This is child abuse at its most sickening.
DeleteThe standard excuse is "it was God's will" or "it was an accident". Nothing will result from these tragedies. The massacre of children in Newtown had zero impact in regards to any kind of gun safety.... this is just a blip.....
DeleteNot much point in enforcing child safety seats in cars for kiddies with free access to loaded firearms. Why do we bother with child-proof caps on medications and hazardous chemicals? What is the point of stopping for stopped school buses or slowing down in school zones? Why have age limits on purchases of cigarettes and alcohol?
ReplyDeleteThe NRA has the answers. It's because the profit from the sale of arms and ammo is way, way, way more important than children's lives.
These were not accidents. It's completely preventable irresponsibility.
ReplyDeleteGryphen, the highest ranked firearms scientists in the world working for the NRA have studied this issue literally to death. They conclude unambiguously that the ONLY way to prevent the deaths of children through the accidental discharge of firearms - known in the industry as "oopsies" - is to increase the numbers of firearms in the home and to promote firearms ownership to every American citizen over the age 13.
ReplyDeleteOr possibly 10.
Woo Hoo livin' in the Wild Wild West! Pew, pew, pew.....
ReplyDeleteProsecuting the parental unit for manslaughter would be a nice first step.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's not an "accident" if a loaded gun is left around anywhere near a child. It's child endangerment.
DeleteBeaglemom
There should be more bumper stickers like this in Texas:
ReplyDeleteI'D RATHER HAVE MY GUN...
THAN MY SON!
support your local NRA
"My kid murdered my other kid"
DeleteOr
"My kid murdered your honor roll student"
It's the only acceptable forn of late term abortion prompted by revengelical christians.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anything will make Americans give up their guns - they'll only think of ways to get more guns into society no matter how stupid and/or mad the possible owners are.
ReplyDeleteIt's fast becoming after birth control
And unless someone stops them from making more replacements for their gun-dead kids they'll just keep making more. Eugenics, not always the evil that people make it out to be.
DeleteThank you, Mr. Hess!
DeleteI silently followed you blog and hope you are doing alright. Of course, you are correct in every aspect of your post... mind you, I wish you weren't, but climate change is upon us and I dread the outcome which will be to the detriment of all creatures' generations following ours.

NO, NO, NO !!!! PLEASE let the people of texas keep blasting each other... May be the only way we can rid the country of enough of them to actually bring texas back as a state. Otherwise, we may just have to amputate !!!
ReplyDeleteGuns just go bang. It's the bullet that does the killing. If the adults to whom these guns belong are truly interested in being ready and able to stop a bad guy, then they probably are using something like this for ammo. One shot. One kill.
