I knew there was something I liked about Satan. He is pro-equal rights.

So does this mean that Satan was gay?

Or black?

Hey, maybe he was a woman.

Well gee if the devil wanted equal rights, then I guess that MUST mean that anybody else demanding them is clearly an agent of Lucifer. You know, because that makes all kinds of sense.

And these people wonder why they are so often mocked, and why so many are leaving the church in droves.

I am beginning to think the Satan all churches rally against is just education.

What the bloody hell does that sign even mean? How far into the toilet does a fundamentalist's soul have to sink for him to read this message, snap his fingers and shout, "NAILED IT!!"

This cowardly bullshit hurts people. It dehumanizes numerous groups, green-lights their suffering and denounces their physical and spiritual worth, and the righteous persecutors, as an added bonus, are elevated and empowered in the process.

Empowered. By trampling the dignity of their families and neighbors. Because Jesus. And because Thanks, Obama.™

And the pastor did a lousy job trying to "explain it".

Now the sign reads: “Glad you reading, did not intend to offend, we all need Christ.”

There was a huge uproar in the community. While Tennessee is primarily Republican, Knoxville and most of the cities are not. This is not representative of this area as a whole. I live within 75 miles of Knoxville. One of their old state representatives (who was a New York native) and very outspoken anti-gay was voted out of office this past election. I think he only served one term.

I cannot positively answer those questions, but I do know for a fact that Satan is a Republican.

Two years for depicting Buddha wearing headphones. Apparently even Buddhists are intolerant.

  9. "These people" is a vague term that reeks of bias. Perhaps not intentional, but here it is. Pity all people for the pain of ignorance.

In my Presbyterian Sunday school memories, the main thing I recall about Satan is that he was "the father of the lie." That's it. He was vaguely connected to the serpent (not snake) who tempted Eve to eat of the fruit (not apple) of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So he conferred the cursed gift of discernment. Yet this Satan was silent about so-called sins that bother some erstwhile Christians.

As a teen, the Satan I saw portrayed in books, movies, and Tarot cards was the fertility god of pre-Christian people--the horned, cloven-hoofed goat man. Later I learned what Margaret Mead wrote about every evangelizing religion supplanting previous deities by demonizing them. So popular Christianity was stricken with an image of Satan as a horny and horned half-man with a tail.

As an adult, I reflected on how little was written in Christian scripture about Satan. He wasn't a positive role model, but neither was he depicted as a god of all evil. He had sufficient status to advise God about the temptation of Job. He possessed the power to subject Jesus to trials in the desert. He was an enemy of selfless love.

Most English-speaking people's idea of Satan is decidedly non-Biblical. Mostly it's derived from a mix of ancient Jewish angel lore with pagan fertility deities. This Satan is powerless.

The most important thing we need to remember about the Biblical Satan is that he boasted of walking about the earth as if he owned it. The father of the lie is in charge of everything. Given the state of the world today, I think people of every faith and of no faith can find some truth in that statement.
