Sarasota County sheriff's deputies are investigating an accidental shooting Friday evening where a 3-year-old reportedly shot their 1-year-old sibling in the face.
Authorities say the shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. in a car outside the Sonshine Learning Center on Orange Road in Venice. They said the children were alone in the car at the time and the gun was left inside.
"The 3-year-old located a handgun that was in the vehicle and discharged a round which resulted in the striking of the 1-year-old," said Sarasota Sheriff's Office Lt. Vince Mayer.
Fortunately it appears that the one year old will survive, but one has to wonder at the psychological effects this will have on the three year old.
Once again I am sure that this mother believed she was purchasing that gun to protect herself and her family, just as the NRA propaganda tells us. However as she learned having a gun in the house, or the car, dramatically increases the possibility of a family member being shot, or even killed.
If you guessed this happened in Texas, well you get a demerit point because it's Florida's turn again.
People have referred to Alaska and Hawaii as the "freak states" owing presumably to their geographic separation from the continental US, but I think we are all aware that the true freak states are Texas and Florida.

I think the manufacture of toy guns should be stopped immediately. If the U.S. can outlaw Kinder Eggs then they can certainly forbid the manufacture of any toy gun, regardless of make, model, function or color of the plastic.

I won't say this will stop children from playing cowboy or cops with guns. They use their fingers or make them out of sticks or playdoe. But parents need to stop allowing children to pretend to shoot guns at each other. That won't stop the killing but it might slow it down a little.
Oh, and trigger locks and gun safes or you are incarcerated and your children go into foster care, never to be returned to you you moronic twit.

An accident is two cars hitting each other, a condom breaking, an errant baseball going though the neighbors window, skipping a few birth control pills or marrying the wrong person for the wrong reason, or getting a jockstrap cup inserted in your chin.
ReplyDeleteThis is child abuse/negligence and it scars the kids for life when they survive, or kills them. Shove the adults in jail for their own safety. What if a kid finds a gun and shoots the owner?
