(Read here for more on the dehydrogen monoxide hoax.)
I see this kind of thing all of the time on Facebook.
I have a few family members and followers who are easily sucked into the newest internet outrage and it is exhausting trying to straighten them out all of the time, so I tend to just ignore Facebook altogether these days.
I cannot even begin to tell you how many parody stories about Sarah Palin I have shot down over the years.
Those bastards!
ReplyDelete...next thing you know they'll be putting it in our water!
Thanks, Obama
Gryphen, I hope Sarah Palin appreciates what you do for her.
ReplyDeleteOutrageous! But it gets worse. If you think dihydrogen monoxide is scary, consider that the FDA allows replacement of one or both of the hydrogen atoms with protium or deuterium without notice to consumers.
ReplyDeleteHow to trap pigs and stop corporations dumping their man made garbage into our food, water, air, dirt and in PRODUCTS. it must stop today. murder is against the law. WE the people must WAKE THE F UP and demand NO mo.
ReplyDeleteI completely abandoned Facebook a couple of months ago.
ReplyDeleteIt has turned into just another place to try and keep me angry all the time about something…who has the time???
My mom falls for this stuff too. I can't tell you how many times I have checkd Snopes for her. I have a high school friend who used to send me multiple 'scares' every day until I asked her to just stop. I haven't died from the lack of fear.
ReplyDeleteI also stay off FB, but my reason is that I was attacked by 'friends' of my niece a few years back for daring to defend our President over being American. My niece has never returned an email from me (I even apologized to her email-not that I was in the wrong) nor has she even acknowledged my cards. I really think FB has caused a lot more grief than it has ever been 'fun' or 'connecting.' Look at the RW freaks who use it to announce their plans to shoot someone, or march around with their loaded guns? I'd be happy if it just went away.
I have finally gotten my Mom to stop sending this stuff. Everyone I would return with a Snopes debunk. I think she finally got tired of it or wised up.
DeleteThank you, Gryph. Our machine hooked-up to the innertubes is a good thing; but not always.
ReplyDeleteSometimes our gullibility is exposed when we should know better. Sometimes we don't bother to check; sometimes many of us are simply undereducated in too many areas when exposed to purported deliberate 'facts' by those who seek money and power. Many arrogant manipulators rely on naive ignorance to sell agendas, e.g., voting against one's own best interests.
And, of course, some of us just don't 'get' parody and satire. *alas*
dowl
LOL !
ReplyDeletedehydrogen monoxide = H2O = Water
I go on Facebook 3 times a year to wish my 2 kids and husband happy birthday. I have family members who post crazy conspiracy stuff, right wing talking points, and stuff like this ^^. I'm sure if I logged on and looked, my little sister will have a post up about the dangers of Dehydrogen monoxide. I prefer to still like my crazy ass family so choose not to use Facebook .
ReplyDeleteI just don't include those people in my news feed. I like using it to keep track of family and close friends.
ReplyDeleteThis was making the rounds well before Facebook and I have forwarded it myself. It's great bait for gullible conspiracy morons.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of others.
DeleteDog Island, where dogs can go for a peaceful retirement.
Male pregnancy.
The Northern Pacific Tree Octopus.
I used to do a unit on internet hoaxes when I taught information literacy. Left it to the end of the year so they could have some fun with it.
Dihydrogen Monoxide.
ReplyDeletedhmo.org
I've used it in my information literacy class for decades.
Scoff if you will, but Dihydrogen Monoxide killed hundreds of passengers on the Titanic -- and even some highly trained crew members!

DeleteI hear it is really toxic stuff to breathe!
But, but, but....Jade Helm! (starts today so stay away from those Walmarts folks!)
ReplyDeleteSheesh
Lol. My kids had to navigate this topic in 6 th grade science class. They both figured out dihydrogen oxide was water.
ReplyDeleteSomeone I know posted this yesterday and I'm not sure if she was upset by it or if she realized it was a spoof. Someone else commented on her post, saying that Subway had voluntarily removed it from the bread a month ago and the story was all over the news.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure he was serious.
I'm not a big facebook fan, but my kids keep me appraised of some of the funny stuff. That Subway parody is riot! I can see people going for it. I remember seeing a news clip of a rat infested restaurant in Philly at night time, it looked like a horror film, and it was. M Night Shamalan working with the special effects folks during the filming of "Seven Deadly Sins" using City Hall as a backdrop.
