Planned Parenthood releases 5 facts about those doctored videos that we all need to know. Update!

Courtesy of Planned Parenthood:

1. Nowhere does anyone from Planned Parenthood discuss "selling" fetal tissue.

Even the heavily edited video from extreme anti-abortion activists doesn't show this or make this accusation. It simply doesn't happen.

On the video, the Planned Parenthood staff member talks about standard reimbursement fees for costs associated with tissue donation programs, which every health care provider has and which the federal law provides for.

2. Planned Parenthood helps patients who wish to donate fetal tissue, just like other health care providers do.

Some Planned Parenthood affiliates have programs for women and families who want to donate tissue to leading research institutions that will use it to help find treatment and cures for diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

These programs are just like any other high-quality health care provider's — they follow all ethics and laws, patients consent fully, and nobody benefits financially.

3. The people who launched this campaign have a track record of making totally false claims.

The person leading this campaign used to be a senior staff member at Live Action, which for seven years has made false claims that have been widely discredited by journalists and independent organizations; Forbes Magazine noted that their claims about Planned Parenthood "fall apart upon close inspection."

4. The fact that far-right, anti-abortion politicians are latching onto this doesn't make it any more credible or real.

GOP politicians remain in a race to prove who can be the worst on women's health, and this story is no exception.

Whether it's Carly Fiorina's social media page or Bobby Jindal's sham "investigation," none of the partisan attempts to make this a real story change the fact that it's a highly edited video from anti-abortion activists who have made false charges for years, now making claims with no basis in reality and no evidence to back them up.

 5. The full, 2.5-hour video shows selective editing that twists and distorts what was said on the tape.

Late in the day, the Live Action-offshoot group released a longer video. It shows that the Planned Parenthood staffer was talking in the context of stem cell research, and was talking about standard reimbursement rates for costs associated with tissue donation — all of which was edited to change the meaning.

The 2.5-hour video also shows that the Planned Parenthood staffer's discussion of brain stem tissue that can help researchers study brain tumors and spinal chord injuries was distorted by editing to make it appear that she was talking about trafficking body parts, which she clearly wasn't.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but there is a problem with all of this.

They are facts. And as we know the conservatives are driven by faith, in this case faith that Planned Parenthood is an abortion providing fetal parts mill, and not facts.

As much as I hate to say it, this video and the response by conservative politicians to it, will have dire consequences for Planned Parenthood.

Don't believe me? Well then tell me, when was the last time you visited the offices of ACORN?

Update: Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, now has a video response

One of the unintended consequences of this will be that Planned Parenthood will cease to exist and then the abortion rate will skyrocket.

Planned Parenthood is the Number 1 provider of contraception to low income women in the United States.

But I agree with you G; things don't look good for Planned Parenthood.

I think it is time for Planned Parenthood to set up a GoFundMe account. The kristian right wing has been trying to end abortions since Roe V Wade passed decades ago. If progressive voters don't start showing up in mid-year elections, we can say goodbye to any common sense legislation in the U.S.

It is just so sad that an organization that does nothing but good for women must publicly defend itself from baseless allegations.

Fuck you right wingers; you don't use Planned Parenthood, you have a thousand babies out of wedlock and henceforth make ME pay for them with MY tax dollars to fund YOUR welfare and food stamps, yet an organization that tries to prevent your mistakes which you birth and then raise on a diet of hamburger helper using my tax dollars is an organization of bad intent?

Fuck all you red state welfare moms, I hope we start to drug test you and cut most of you off due to your drug abuse and the abuse of the system. I know that you can only be on welfare for 5 years now, which is wonderful, but for 99% of you it is 5 years to many.

(CNN)Planned Parenthood's president apologized Thursday for a top official's tone in a controversial video, but she also denied the clip's allegation that her organization profits from tissue donation.

"Our top priority is the compassionate care that we provide. In the video, one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect that compassion. This is unacceptable, and I personally apologize for the staff member's tone and statements," said Cecile Richards, the group's president, in a video out Thursday. "As always, if there is any aspect of our work that can be strengthened, we want to know about it, and we take swift action to address it."

That's how doctors -- especially surgeons -- talk when they believe they're among other medical professionals. They're not sentimental about organs and tissue and the things they cut into and cut out. Personally, I wouldn't want a surgeon who was sentimental about bodily tissue; I'd like one with the necessary clinical detachment that would allow him or her to focus on the job that needs to be done.

  10. Rep. Tim Murphy [R], a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus and chairman of the Energy and Commerce subcommittee looking into the video, said at a Wednesday news conference he’d seen the clip weeks before. Asked afterward why he and others waited until this week to take action, Murphy struggled for an answer before abruptly ending the interview with CQ Roll Call, saying he should not be quoted and remarking, “This interview didn’t happen.”

Here’s an excerpt from CQ Roll Call’s hallway chat with Murphy:

CQ Roll Call: “So, what I wondered was, what’s happened in those few weeks? Why is it coming out now and not earlier?”

Murphy: “Um, I don’t know why. All I know is I saw it and he said he was going to post it eventually, so that’s all I know.”

Another Pro-Life Caucus and Judiciary committee member, GOP Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona, said Wednesday he had also seen the video about a month ago.
    [...]
The video, shot a year ago by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress, shows an interview with a Planned Parenthood executive who discusses, between bites of salad and sips of red wine, the costs charged to researchers for organs taken from fetuses.

Officials at Planned Parenthood contend the video was edited to create the appearance of the start of a financial transaction. Planned Parenthood also said it only donates fetal organs and tissue when the mother has explicitly given consent, in accordance with the law.

The Center for Medical Progress did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

    6. 10:27, where do you think women without a lot of disposable income go for Pap smears, to be fitted for a diaphragm, to be treated for a UTI, to get a prescription for birth control pills? They go to Planned Parenthood. They go there because it's affordable, it's accessible, and has some of the finest medical staff working there that you'd ever encounter anywhere. It has nothing to do with "dumbing down" society.

    8. Do you understand that despite the ACA there are still co-pays and prescription costs that lower income women cannot afford? Do you understand accessibility? Low income and poor women don't have cars, that's why the Planned Parenthood facility in my city is on the bus line. And it has extended weekday and weekend hours so that the working poor are able to go to the clinic without having to take time off from what is already a low paying job.

And I guess you think poor people shouldn't be allowed to have sex? That they "should have bigger concerns in life than getting outfitted for a diaphram

Fox Guest Pummels Planned Parenthood Edited Video: ‘This Is Right-Wing Pornography’ (VIDEO)

...Robert Zimmerman then cuts in with a whole boatload of knowledge:

“What infuriates me Megyn — is the fraud behind this video. Let’s call it what it is. This is right-wing pornography. The same individuals who produced this video have been called out by the press repeatedly, mainstream and even conservative press, for the same individuals producing this film that you featured tonight have been nailed for producing films that have been misleading? Have been misleading, have been editing…”

Kelly keeps going on and on trying to say that the video is accurate and hadn’t been deceptively edited, and that all of Planned Parenthood’s responses are that they have sold baby body parts, only responding that it’s not illegal.

Zimmerman then shuts her down, telling her she is just flat-out wrong. Later in the broadcast he says:

“Megyn, do you have any concern about how misleading and false this film is? How it creates false impressions and there’s nothing more than a scam.”

This is just another smoke and mirrors attempt by the king of edit it into a lie. Typical O'Keefe. When are they going to finally nail him and send him to prison?

  23. OOooo. The plot thickens.

The makers of this video are in trouble with the IRS and may be prosecuted for fraud.

Seems they lied when filing for tax exempt status and also lied when soliciting donations.

"But as Slate reports, the Center for Medical Progress appears to be nothing more than a front organization for the anti-abortion group Live Action. That is not how the IRS understood it when considering the group's application for tax-exempt status, and not how the group originally presented itself to the public in soliciting donations.

According to new research by the Bridge Project, the policy arm of the progressive group American Bridge, the IRS granted the Center for Medical Progress tax-exempt status as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2013 under the classification code G92, which applies to biomedicine charities. In the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities, which is used by the IRS, that classification covers "Diseases, Disorders, Medical Disciplines: Biomedicine, Bioengineering." So-called "right to life" groups, defined as groups that "support the passage of legislation which assigns legal rights to the unborn and seeks to criminalize the termination of unwanted pregnancies," have their own classification code with the IRS.

The IRS likely mistook the Center for Medical Progress as a biomedicine charity if the group described itself on its application much as it described itself on its original website: "a non-profit organization dedicated to informing and educating both the lay public and the scientific community about the latest advances in regenerative medicine, cell-based therapies, and related disciplines. We take a special interest in the lab-to-clinic translational dynamic and tracking its implications for academics, advocacy, private sector players, and the individual patient.”

While it was describing itself that way, the organization had a donate button on its website that asked the public to help it "continue to operate." "

    www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/planned-parenthood-sting-video_55a92205e4b0896514d11ac9?

"But the only thing the Center for Medical Progress appears to have done in the past two years is produce this undercover video investigation into Planned Parenthood. David Daleiden, a longtime anti-abortion activist and the center's founder, previously served as director of research for Live Action, the group that has released several sensational sting videos of Planned Parenthood over the past few years and appears to be solely dedicated to destroying the family planning provider."

And it didn't file it's tax forms. That's naughty. I know because I did the research and paperwork for our school PTA to become a 501(c)3 non profit.

"The Center for Medical Progress carried out the Planned Parenthood sting by creating a shell company, Biomax, which then sought a lunch meeting with Dr. Deborah Nucatola, the family planning provider's senior director of medical services."

You do not mess with the IRS. I hope everyone involves gets their asses handed to them, right before the huge fines and prison time.
