President Obama smacks Major Garrett down over "nonsense" question. Update!

Courtesy of HuffPo:

President Barack Obama publicly scolded CBS News' Major Garrett during a gathering of the press corps at the White House on Wednesday, chastising the reporter for asking if the president is "content" to celebrate the Iran nuclear deal while four American hostages remain in Iran.

"That's nonsense. And you should know better," Obama replied.

I watched much of this press conference, and enjoyed how determined the President was to answer every question posed by the reporters in the room. The guy was clearly having the time of his life answering questions about the new deal with Iran.

However when Garrett stood up and asked this insulting and disrespectful question I thought it might anger the President so much that he would end the press conference.

Instead he gave his answer, though clearly with some irritation, and went right back to taking any and all questions from the pool of reporters.

Correction: My earlier post said that Garrett was reporting for Fox News, however he is actually now reporting for CBS.  My bad.

Update: Here are some of the folks who are applauding Major Garrett's question:

So you can understand why I briefly forgot that Garrett no longer worked for Fox News.

You can take Garrett out of Fox News, but you can't take the Fox News out of Garrett.

    Ed Henry is another one.

It's the old 'when did you stop beating your wife' kind of approach and this asshat uses an important national press conference to grandstand for attention and then smugly says he meant to be provocative. If it were me, he's never ever get another chance to ask a question of PBO. Ever. He's be damn well frozen out for his shocking level of disrespect and innuendo.

Here's another smackdown by our President.

CBS News’ Major Garrett has come under fire for his contentious questioning of President Barack Obama on Wednesday — with the first volleys having been lobbed by the president himself.

“As you well know, there are four Americans in Iran, three held on trumped-up charges according to your administration and one, whereabouts unknown,” Garrett asked the president. “Can you tell the country, sir, why you are content with all the fanfare around this deal to leave the conscience of this nation, the strength of this nation unaccounted for in relation to these four Americans?”

“I’ve got to give you credit, Major, for how you craft those questions,” Obama replied. “The notion that I’m content as I celebrate with American citizens languishing in Iranian jails — Major, that’s nonsense, and you should know better.”

“Nobody is content, and our diplomats and our teams are working diligently to try to get them out,” he added. “Now, if the question is why we did not tie the negotiations to their release, think about the logic that that creates. Suddenly Iran realizes, ‘You know what? Maybe we can get additional concessions out of the Americans by holding these individuals.”

He concluded by noting that the Iranian deal was entirely unconnected from the administration’s efforts to secure the release of these prisoners. “If we had walked away from the nuclear deal, we’d still be pushing them just as hard to get these folks out,” he said. “That’s why those issues are not connected.”

Garrett later explained that he was merely “trying to strike a nerve” and “be provocative” with the president — an explanation that “Real Time” host Bill Maher found so inadequate he took to Twitter well after midnight to dispute it:

    http://www.salon.com/2015/07/16/bill_maher_takes_sshole_major_garrett_down_a_peg_if_you_want_to_get_a_rise_out_of_obama_why_not_just_shout_the_n_word/

A true journalist would ask a question about the state of the hostage negotiations, and add the bit about the Pentagon. But not judgmentally, as Garrett did. That's not what reporting is about -- you want facts from the President, not a chance to sling your own views into it.
CBS - what used to be called "the Tiffany network," is in a race to the bottom, I see. I'll get my news elsewhere.

Listen to this fuckwad try to weasel out of this. Mischaracterized? I listened to it and I heard it for EXACTLY what he was trying to do, and there's no dancing around that. He INTENTIONALLY phrased his 'question' as such and Obama BUSTED his ass on it. Now he's whining about being 'mischaracterized'. BULL.

Garrett to Charlie Rose: No Second Thoughts on My Iran Question

CBS News’ Major Garrett told CBS This Morning he had no second thoughts about the question he asked President Barack Obama on American hostages in Iran, which earned him a presidential rebuke.

The question has divided Garrett’s colleagues, and co-host Charlie Rose gave Garrett an opening by saying all reporters occasionally ask questions they wish they could retract, hint hint nudge nudge.

But Garrett said Obama mischaracterized his query.

“What I wanted to drive at, aggressively, was why, in a context when the president conceded many times in that press conference that choices had to be made and priorities had to be established, these four Americans were not prioritized in the context of the Iran deal,” Garret said. “This administration has struggled with [this issue] and personally, and I’ve done soul searching about whether I’ve been aggressive enough on behalf of hostages overseas.”

Garrett conceded he may not be “an imperfect articulator,” but that it was important to pursue the line of questioning. “I asked the question I asked, and I can’t take it back,” he said.

Pelosi: American Hostages’ Release Shouldn’t Have Been Part of Iran Deal

In comments made during her weekly press conference, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the release of American prisoners in Iran should not have been a precondition during the nuclear negotiations.

“Do you think the four American hostages being held in Iran should have been released as a precondition to any deal made about Iran’s nuclear program,” a reporter asked.

“No, no,” Pelosi responded. “It would have been good, but no.”

“This is a nuclear deal, this is a nuclear agreement,” Pelosi said. “I appreciate the fact that since we had a nuclear negotiation and we have a nuclear agreement, that a much brighter light is being shone on the prisoners of conscience in Iran.”

It's also not a bilateral agreement. The US is one of at least five parties to this agreement. That's something the GOP will never understand.

but I wonder - after all the back-slapping and high-fiving from his fellow lizards at Fox news - if, maybe late at night when he's alone...
he thinks about what the President of the United States said to him, "...that's nonsense and you should know better."

Mr. ThinSkin Trump is busy with some pretty vicious smackdowns on Twitter. McCain, Perry and Rove are the current recipients.

Obama is always so gracious with his 'taking it to' his detractors, Trump, not so much. He's just a schoolyard bully.

Perry ‘Should Be Forced to Take an IQ Test’ Before Debates

Donald Trump was clearly really, really bothered by what two big-name Republicans said about him today and ripped both of them for their intelligence, amongst other things, in a Twitter rant.

First, John McCain. The Arizona senator said in an interview today that he’s worried about Trump “firing up the crazies” in the GOP over immigration.

Trump called him a “dummy” and said he should apologize:

And then there was Rick Perry. Earlier this week Trump trashed Perry for failing at border security while he was the governor of Texas, and Perry responded with a blistering statement saying that Trump isn’t standing for conservatism, he’s standing for his own “toxic mix of demagoguery and nonsense.”

Well, not only did Trump respond, but he ripped Perry for his intellect:

Trumpocalypse Explodes As Donald Trump Tries To Get Fox News To Fire Karl Rove
