Shooter attacks military members in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Update!

Courtesy of the LA Times
Courtesy of CNN:

Three people were killed and three were wounded in shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Thursday morning, city spokeswoman Enora Moss said. Of the three wounded, one is in critical condition, one was treated and released, and the third is an officer, Moss said. The officer's condition is unknown.

The suspected shooter involved in the incident is also dead, Moss said.

Gunshots were fired at a military recruiting center and a Navy Reserve center in different parts of Chattanooga, Tennessee, late Thursday morning, officials and witnesses said.

One officer is "down" in connection with the shootings, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke told reporters. He was not specific about the officer's condition.

Witnesses said a man sprayed bullets at the glass doors of a military recruiting center at a strip mall on Lee Highway, and the U.S. Navy tweeted Thursday that a shooting happened at a separate location -- the Navy Reserve center on Amnicola Highway. The two sites are 7½ miles apart.

By 1:15 p.m., the "active shooter situation" was over, police tweeted.

Oh man my daughter goes to Chattanooga all of the time.  She's fine but it made my heart skip a beat when I heard the news.

This is still a breaking story so I will update as more details come to light.

It appears right now that the shooter was targeting military members.

They are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism according to the press conference that I am listening to right now.

Update: Now learning that there were four Marines and a police officer shot. Some reports are now putting the number of dead at four.

Update 2: Yep it's reported now as four dead Marines. Responding police officer shot in ankle. No word yet on whether the shooter took his own life or was killed by police.

Update 3: Okay it looks as if two others were wounded besides the police officer.  And for those wondering, the shooter is reported to have been white.

Update 4: MSNBC is reporting the the shooter is a naturalized citizen from the Middle East.

Update 5: Shooter's name was Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

Update 6: The shooting seems to have caused Palin to go full religious zealot:

Horrific events unfolding in Chattanooga drive us to our knees in prayer for the Marines and their families, as well as for our nation. Pray that the madness within any ideology driving any murderous spree against the innocent cease, in our Lord's name.

Well that's poorly written.  And not very practical either.

No calls for beefed up security, increased surveillance of certain groups, or even perhaps better gun control laws. Instead all Palin can think to do is beg for divine intervention.

OMG, he really said this with a straight face? He who brought the craziest of the crazies into our national consciousness? He who invited the sick and twisted insanity that is the Heath/Palin klan? Talk about dementia! Talk about denial! What a horrific man.

John McCain unloads on Donald Trump: “He’s fired up the crazies”

“It’s very bad,” McCain, who was eager to talk about Trump, told me on Monday when I stopped by his Senate office. The Senator is up for reëlection in 2016, and he pays close attention to how the issue of immigration is playing in his state. He was particularly rankled by Trump’s rally. “This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain said. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”

"Today was a nightmare for the city of Chattanooga. ... We had someone viciously attack, at two different locations, people who proudly serve our country," Berke said.

Gina Mule, a server at a restaurant, said she saw a man who'd been in a silver convertible Mustang, firing a "high-powered rifle" at the recruiting offices at about 10:50 a.m.

She said she first heard "Pow, pow, pow!" She then went to a window, through which she said she saw the man firing shots.

"I don't know how many shots he fired, but it was a lot," she said.

  12. Anonymous12:14 PM

A second witness, April Grimmett, said she was working at a hair salon near the recruiting center when she looked out a window and saw a man ducking in between cars.

"Shortly after that, we heard the (shots). It was very loud and very fast," Grimmett said, without saying what happened to the man she had seen.

A photo that she took shows glass doors damaged by the gunfire.

    BREAKING! Yay for ALASKA, Gryphen!

Alaska Governor Expands Medicaid By Skirting GOP Lawmakers

laska would become the latest state to sign on to a major expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act through a plan announced by Gov. Bill Walker on Thursday.

Walker, a Republican-turned-independent elected in 2014 on a platform that included Medicaid expansion, had been courting the Republican-led state legislature on the issue. But after lawmakers failed to advance his proposal in their latest session, he decided to carry out the policy on his own authority, he said during a press conference at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium headquarters in Anchorage. Absent legislative action to halt or alter the plan, the expansion will take effect Sept. 1, the governor said.

Broadening eligibility for the federal-state health care program could give coverage to as many as 42,000 Alaskans, according to the governor's office. Walker informed the state legislature's joint budget committee of his intent to accept federal funding for the expansion in a letter Thursday. He said he will meet with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to discuss Medicaid expansion next week.

"Alaska and Alaskans cannot wait any longer," Walker said. "This is the final option for me. I've tried everything else," he said of his decision to circumvent lawmakers after months of lobbying them to enact his plan via legislation. "I never give up, and I won't give up."

We as a civilized society need to recognize those and welcome them to America! That will freak them out! They will say some are mean! You tell em that's them! Maybe having military recruitment centers in so many strip malls across the country is not a good idea. If someone wants to enter the military there should be an office where the person can go with a proper appointment and some security provided for the recruiters and other people in the office.

I don't agree with ANY military recruitment offices within the public sector, nor with military recruiters visiting or schools. If one wants to seek out that sort of job one should have to enter a military base and find the recruitment office there. Keep in on base where everyone is checked out before entering, not in our public civilian spaces.
