Anti-choice activists are dumpster diving in order to find the personal records of women using abortion services. WTF?

Courtesy of Think Progress:

Abortion opponents are sifting through public records — including 911 calls, autopsy reports, and state health department documents — in order to glean medical information about women who have had abortions, according to a report from the Washington Post and ProPublica.

The report also states that some activists dig through the trash at abortion clinics to look for patient records in dumpsters. If they find these documents, they use them to file complaints that providers are violating privacy laws by making their patients’ information too easily accessible.

The anti-abortion activists who seek this type of medical information — many of whom publish their findings online — say they’re not trying to identify patients’ identities or breach women’s privacy. Instead, they want to make sure that abortion doctors aren’t breaking the law.

Oh yeah these folks are not creepy stalkers invading the privacy of women making an incredibly personal and private decision, they are simply doing this because they care about women and want to make sure that their privacy is not being invaded.

You know by creepily stalking them and invading their privacy.

Makes perfect sense.

Any man who opposes a woman's right to an abortion should STFU and make sure he isn't impregnating women. Problem solved.

If men are so worried about abortion, they should only have sex when they are planning to procreate.
They need to start controlling their sperm.

Who, in this day and age, throws records in a dumpster? Shredders are relatively inexpensive, and if these activists are successful then it's all on Planned Parenthood's head and they should change their practices.

HIPAA violations are enough to close a medical facility. No abortion provider (or any medical service provider) should mishandle patient records.

A dumpster diver finding patient records is really hard to believe. But the threat of having one's medical history exposed is certainly a weapon in the war against women. Quite likely, they will expose fictional women, in order to terrorize women that need an abortion.

Being raped, pregnant and scared your medical info will be published, that's the scenario these people are so proud of. They are monsters, wrapped in a cloak of false religion.

These people are relentless those phony ass videos have them all riled up again. I saw a video last week of them harassing a AA woman who had escorted her daughter in there. She had a water pistol and was using it. They keep harassing her, I swear I wouldn't blame her if she pulled real a gun and shot them! There like 8 of them against her? They would not stop! Kept ranting about bible and gawd and shit.
Why the police don't arrest these people?
And I guess they are going through 911 records so they can harass women who have been raped? What sickos! They are worried about ISIS? They ARE ISIS! American Talibani!

@ 6:35 AM - Exactly. Why in blue blazes would private medical records be relegated to a dumpster? Is this really happening?

  5. I'm sorry, this is completely off-topic, but with all the bad news, this is such a wonderful laugh to start the day:

I would think it very easy to personally go after the 'dumpster divers'! Turn around is fair play and should immediately be done is my thought.

After all - abortions are legal! Their bullshit is NOT!

Just slam the lid, and put a lock on it. Make THEM the story. Problem solved.

I seriously counter that clinics are putting their records in the dumpsters outside their locations! Records are private and handled in that manner throughout the country.

Nothing a good crosscut shredder or shredding service can't solve - and yes, dumping medical records in regular trash is pretty stupid and a HIPPAA violation.

YOu are correct 8:07 - they are doing this becuase of the Ashley Madison hack - both to distract some and to scare women into thinkign their records might be found.

It should become law that abortion activist groups should be required to provide health, childcare and employment services for every women they "protect" as punishment for their discrimination against pregnant women. How are their actions not defined as discrimination? Discrimination is defined as an act, impermissibly based in whole or in part on a person's race, color, religion, SEX, national origin, age, physical or mental handicap, and/or reprisal, that adversely affects privileges, benefits, working conditions, results in disparate treatment, or had a disparate impact on employees or applicants. Show me where it states that trespassing, committing a complete invasion of privacy, and engaging in sexism, harassment and emotional and mental abuse that causes post traumatic stress disorder is in their bylaws and mission statement. Their non-profit status should be revoked and the organization fined and shuttered for infringing on the rights of a minority group of women.

What problems are these activists solving -- especially if their target market doesn't want or ask for their help and is definitely not willing to give them authority over her CHOICE/Individual freedoms? They are not solving any problems for anyone especially since they are not financially burdened by the decision of the person seeking an abortion. They have absolutely no skin in the game, no risk, nothing to profit from, no desire to contribute, and no connection to that person's household. However, they discriminate against a woman and her family just to get them to hand over complete authority of their life CHOICES for some random stranger's happiness....to hell with the consequences of that person's life and the aftermath. You know, because an activists' opinion and happiness is much more important and valuable than anyone else's -- regardless of whether they know the pregnant woman and her circumstances or not.

Tim Gunn said, "When you've been in the monkey house at the zoo too long, you forget how bad it stinks in there. Just because you get acclimated to the smell, doesn't mean it stopped stinking."

These people stink to high heaven and they make me sick!

You know, I am a devout life-long pacifist and have trouble even imagining myself killing anything. Yet, I strongly believe in a woman's right to choose and I do not equate abortion of fetal cells to killing. That said, I hope someone like me is on the jury of any poor woman who snaps and goes after these cretins--whose entire existence seems to revolve around making the lives of women, as well as health care providers--and all who actually give a damn-- a living hell. If they went after me like that, I don't know that I might reach my own threshold. Sick, deluded, ugly assholes.

That's right if a man keeps it in his pants we wouldn't have all these pregnancies.

It is really that simple, if they would just control their sperm there would be no unwanted pregnancies.
Personally I think all these prolife men have some sort of uteri envy.

It's beside the point of this article that medical records aren't kept as safe as they should be (although I believe in at least one case, they were in a locked dumpster waiting to be picked up for shredding).

Every place I have worked - at least, those which create papers that need shredding for safety or privacy - keep ALL the material to be shredded INSIDE the building in containers with locks on them. I have never heard of a company that does otherwise.

It's time to do to the gun nuts what these whack jobs are doing to women's reproductive rights
The 2nd amendment is the only amendment that mentions regulation..
Protest at every gun shop and show.
48 hour waiting periods after viewing graphic scenes of mayhem created by guns .
    Psychological evaluation prior to licencing.
Additionally training in use and storage of guns.
Registration and insuring of all guns.
Essentially holding gun owners responsible for the mayhem caused by their views.

Unwanted pregnancy and abortion is avoidable, but they don't want anyone having access to cotraception, either. So it's really about legislating morality, no?

    I can't stand these assholes.

I don't know about other's experiences with medical records, but most of my health providers have gone "paperless", with the exception of a summary printed out for my own records and receipts. When there is paper involved, they shred it while I'm watching. With the privacy laws so tight, I'd me surprised if they find anything useful in the dumpters, but if it makes them "Feel" like they're accomplishing something noble, they're clearly mistaken.
I'd like to catch them in the act, slam the lids shut and toss a lock or two on top. A few days "contemplating" their actions may make them less likely to try it again.
