This video is for the next time that your obnoxious Southern relatives try to convince you that the Civil War was not fought over slavery. Spoiler alert: Yes it was!

This is Colonel Ty Seidule, Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point, so you know he has some understanding of the topic.

In a nutshell certain people in the Southern part of the country thought that owning people was a good idea, one that they felt the Bible supported by the way, and people in the North thought otherwise.

If you are a supporter of the Confederate flag you are a supporter of the types of abuse they inflicted on their fellow man, and the treasonous acts they perpetrated against their own government to protect those acts.

  1. The Secessionists fought to preserve slavery. The Nationals however fought only to preserve the Union, originally. Witness the New York City draft riot 1863 in response to the Emancipation Proclamation.

Please make sure that it is understood that the Prager University (non-accredited) is part of the octopus arms of the Heritage Foundation and David and Charles Koch.

Thank you Gryph for posting 'Was the Civil War about slavery.' But other Prager University videos in the 'education/history' series are off-the-mark; they skew toward a 'conservative' (vs liberal) viewpoint. Because we like and appreciate the 'truth in this one video, we should remain cautious about others out there. We can't IMO rubber-stamp Dennis Prager's positions on conservative politics and what is best (facts/truth). Think Glenn Beck University and David Barton, 'historian' on early American history. Verification matters.

We must continue to be vigilant about where (and from whom) we get American history info/education.

This video could only have been better if he dropped the mike at the end. Anyone who has read or studied the events that led up to, and caused the Civil War, and done so with an objective mind, already knew what he is speaking of. The main problem with his argument is that it includes verifiable facts, and we know how people of a certain political bent feel about facts.

What I thought of while watching this clip, was how ironic it seems that President Obama, the first elected President of the United States, is a huge fan of Abraham Lincoln's words, life and style of leadership.
Once, while visiting friends in Georgia, my husband was aghast at how some southerners still seem to be fighting the civil war, there were cannons with a pyramid of cannonballs, lawnjockeys, and confederate flags proudly displayed on lawns, and we saw signs in museums we thought/hoped were part of the "historical displays". A public water fountain with a sign above it proclaiming "Whites Only" within the public space. We asked why, and they said it was to gauge the public's reaction. And they chuckled as they said it.
Real people were stripped of their dignity, humanity, culture, and history and exploited in every way possible, and people STILL think it's "funny"? Some people, at least.
