Nineteen year old shoots himself dead while taking selfies with gun.

Courtesy of Click 2 Houston:

A man posing with a gun and taking selfies was killed when the gun went off and struck him in southwest Houston, police said.

Family members said the victim is 19-year-old Deleon Alonso Smith.

Investigators said Smith was taking selfies with a gun at an apartment in the 9800 block of Forum Park Drive and Bissonnet around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when the gun accidentally went off, shooting the 19-year-old in the throat and killing him.

I don't want to sound callous but when it comes to accidental shootings this is one of the better outcomes.

I mean no innocent people were shot, and this guy will no longer pose a danger to his community with his careless gun handling.

I'm just saying.

Maybe we should promote Gun Selfie Day and see if we can get rid of more of these numbnutz.

Our veterinarian was a big game hunter. He would come to our dairy farm weekly and talked about guns constantly. One day his 16 year old son was in the car with friends, screwing around like boys that age do. Found a gun in the glove box and said something about playing Russian roulette. Put gun to temple and shot himself. I never heard another hunting or gun story from his dad.

  4. I was never fascinated with guns, but at ages 19 to about 26, I don't think I lived anymore sensibly, and I refuse to let rosy-colored hindsight tell a different story, making me seem any wiser than this unlucky fool.

There were enough strangers I went home with after a night's drinking who could have easily been another John Wayne Gacy or Jeffrey Dahmer. Plenty of times too I was behind the wheel when I damn well shouldn't have been. No arrests, but I was deserving a few times. And would also swallow just about any pill someone said to try. "Do a line of this, it's good shit." That's the way the 1970s really were.

Glancing back from 61, the stupid sense of invincibility we live with in our 20s is pretty damn scary, I don't deny. Most of us age past it harmlessly, but in any generation, there's always some unlucky casualties like Smith.

Thanks dvlaries. I'm 63 and often shake my head at my youthful stupidity. Just glad I made it through.

Why the hell take a selfie with a loaded gun?

I used to respect the work that the NRA did in gun handling safety and hunting awareness. I am totally disgusted now; when did that organization abandon its' principals, and why???

I pity the family of this young man.

I agree WA. The firrst serious gun owner I ever met was from the TriCities area. He had a huge locked safe. While he was proud to show it to me and eager to teach me to shoot, the first minutes were all about safety and gun ettiquette. I didn't even realize there was gun etiquette.
This person is now in his late 70s.

i used to feel kinda bad when this happened. No more. if you pick up a gun your chances of mortality multiply. I have a brother that can't go outside w/o packing heat. I Feel bad for his insecurity, but if something happens due to it, I will not mourn him.

Since when did handguns come with cameras attached?

There are levels of stupidity. Maybe this one will make the Darwin awards?

"It went off" Clck goes the camera, BOOM goes the loaded gun, and life moves on. Yeah, we all did some dumb stuff in our youth, but in my case it never involved a loaded gun nor taking a photo of myself to memorialize THE MOST STUPID THING I EVER DID. And to what end? A posthumous Darwin Award?
Sorry to sound so callous, but the gun just "went off" has the same effect as long nails on a chalkboard.....

Of course, there's more to the story. This young man and his friend found the gun earlier in the day. Instead of turning it in, they decided to keep it. That's the tragic mistake. Apparently, this fellow was a generally good person; he was scheduled to go to college the next day. I'd be willing to bet that these boys did not have any gun training and didn't know how to check whether it was loaded. This was a stupid adolescent trick and the consequences were devastating. I feel so badly for his family. This guy didn't start the gun culture, but its ubiquitousness allowed them to take chances that young people in Canada or Australia or England wouldn't dream of.
    RIP Deleon.
