Trey Gowdy, Benghazi Committee chairman, and human cockatoo. |
The House committee investigating the Benghazi attacks is now the longest congressional investigation in history, committee Democrats announced today.
As of Monday, the House Select Committee on Benghazi, has been active for 72 weeks -- surpassing the record previously held by the Watergate Committee in the 1970's.
Democrats have accused the committee of focusing on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rather than the 2012 Benghazi attacks.
“The Benghazi Select Committee has now become one of the longest and least active congressional investigations in history,” Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, wrote in a statement. “The Committee has squandered the last 16 months and more than 4.5 million taxpayer dollars dredging up political attacks to impact the 2016 presidential election -- a severe misuse of taxpayer funds and Congressional power."
Of course the Republicans answer to those charges is "Yeah, but Hillary's private email server" which actually proves nothing except the fact that she did not trust the state department email server. Which as we know got hacked.
Personally I have no idea how the House Republicans can possibly justify the time and expense of what is clearly simply a witch hunt to find something to use politically against the likely Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential election?
Personally I wonder how republicans can actually put their clothes on by themselves and cross the street without a helper.
ReplyDeleteExpect 4-8 more years of this kind of non-stop nonsense, if we have another Clinton administration.
ReplyDeleteWe'll have it anyway. Republicans have no vision, no plan for America. Beyond snuggling with the rich, there is no plan except to keep average Americans poor and dumb.
DeleteExactly, TC. No matter who is the next president (and it will be a Democrat), the Republicans won't play nice.
DeleteDoes his head really come to a point? Four lives lost in Benghazi, over 4,000 lost in Iraq. Time to open up war crimes investigations, since the gop is SO very concerned about American lives lost overseas. How many lives were lost over those "surveyor" marks of $carah Payme? This wimpy looking guy gives me very strange vibes, typical repubican.
ReplyDeleteThat is just one of his many coifs.

Sheesh
Look at his head. Did he just have a brain fart, or is it a cyst? Cue the banjoes.
ReplyDeleteThis one of those Bill o Really pinheads. They do exist.

We, the taxpayers, should be able to get a"refund" for these politically motivated witch hunts. After the second, third investigation that produces nothing their pay should be docked, their benefits reduced or they pay a fine for wasting time/money, which could be spent elsewhere.
People need to get out an vote, especially in off election years and "fire" these buffoons out of office. In the private sector, they would have been fired for non performance in the workplace and they also have the audacity to try and take away my healthcare for the 61st time.
Just think how much CANCER RESEARCH could have been funded with that $4.5 million.
DeleteThey would not be doing this if they weren't petrified of Mrs. Clinton.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is exactly right 5:48. They have been anticipating, and fearing, Clinton's run and likely win this election. Now that's planning ahead! (no pun intended, but you get the point)
DeleteMildred
What about Ken Starr and the Whitewater investigation into Bill Clinton? That seemed to take up the entire first term, and beyond. They didn't stop until they got him for lying about Monica Lewinsky and could impeach for that. It was the relentless waste of our money that got me to finally abandon forever the party of my parents. One place I recall reading that it cost over $60 million.
ReplyDeleteSince that was a special consul does that not "count" as a congressional investigation? It was still our tax money that was spent. I think ABC should not ignore that. And, it is one reason I hesitate supporting Hillary. She will be subject to just that sort of craziness no matter what she does and I am not sure the country can survive. If they have been brutal with Obama, they will be equally so with Hillary if they loose to her. I would hope we could find a good candidate they can't go after with such crazy nasty vengence.
Unless you are content to 'bend over' and surrender your vote to the GOP, any Democrat will endure this type of harassment. It is how the Republican party rolls. And a segment of America supports it.
DeleteWho would that be? Maybe Joe Biden because he has a long history with so many of them, but even then, Republicans are like toddlers throwing tantrums.
DeleteIs Trey Gowdy the banjo kid from Deliverance grown up?

The Benghazi investigation is clearly a political witch hunt. That doesn't mean there aren't issues that didn't need to be addressed. Congress itself is responsible for not providing adequate funding for security. But the Obama administration is also responsible for not making a huge issue of that! It let its own people down, just not in the way this witch hunt is trying to portray. As for the mail server issue, again, it's a witch hunt, too, but an easily prevented one. Hillary Clinton brought this on herself, and please, it was not because her private mail server was more secure than the State Department's. It was because she wanted full control of official email she sent out on the government's dime. That was the only "security" she cared about, I.e. not being embarrassed by FOIA requests for her official emails. Now skirting the same rules everyone else was supposed to follow (and her paranoia) is biting her, and potentially us, in the ass.
ReplyDeleteAnd anyone who tries to defend Clinton on this, please defend Sarah Palin's Yahoo account while you're at it.
McCarthy gives Boehner a B- as he campaigns to replace him
ReplyDeleteBy ERICA WERNER - The Associated Press
....McCarthy also says the House's Benghazi investigation committee can take credit for Hillary Clinton's dropping poll numbers seemingly contradicting GOP claims that the committee is aimed simply at uncovering the truth.
McCarthy made both comments on conservative host Sean Hannity's show on Fox News Channel. They came as the California Republican works to consolidate support to move into Congress' top job following Boehner's surprise resignation on Friday under tea party pressure.
McCarthy went on to discuss the special House committee investigating the 2012 attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans while Clinton, now a Democratic candidate for president, was secretary of state.
"Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?" McCarthy said. "But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she's un-trustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen."
Those comments drew a swift and angry response from Democrats.
"This stunning concession from Rep. McCarthy reveals the truth that Republicans never dared admit in public: the core Republican goal in establishing the Benghazi Committee was always to damage Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and never to conduct an even-handed search for the facts," said Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, top Democrat on the committee......
After Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) admitted that Republicans lied about the purpose of the Benghazi investigation, several top Democrats are calling out the House Republicans’ abuse of power and calling for an immediate end to the investigation.
ReplyDeleteRep. McCarthy got flustered during an interview with Sean Hannity and blew the worst kept political secret in Washington. He admitted that the Benghazi investigation is all about digging up mud on Hillary Clinton.
The ranking member of the Select Committee on Benghazi, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said, “This stunning concession from Rep. McCarthy reveals the truth that Republicans never dared admit in public: the core Republican goal in establishing the Benghazi Committee was always to damage Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and never to conduct an even-handed search for the facts. It is shameful that Republicans have used this tragedy and the deaths of our fellow Americans for political gain. Republicans have blatantly abused their authority in Congress by spending more than $4.5 million in taxpayer funds to pay for a political campaign against Hillary Clinton.”
The office of Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said, “House Republicans were never interested in a bipartisan investigation to improve the security of Americans abroad. They’ve only been interested in pure extremist political theater. Leader McCarthy: the American people don’t want more politically-motivated “select committees” – not to smear presidential candidates, and not to assault women’s health. They want real leadership to confront the challenges we face as a nation.”
Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) called for an immediate end to the Benghazi investigation and for Republicans to apologize to the families of the Benghazi victims,

McCarthy’s Benghazi Committee Brag Brings Rebuke From Clinton Campaign (Video)
Kevin McCarthy’s boast Tuesday night that the Select Committee on Benghazi had succeeded in tanking Hillary Rodham Clinton’s poll ratings has brought a rebuke from her campaign and congressional Democrats, who have long insisted the panel was set up for political gain.
“This is a damning display of honesty by the possible next Speaker of the House,” Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon said in an email.
“Kevin McCarthy just confessed that the committee set up to look into the deaths of four brave Americans at Benghazi is a taxpayer-funded sham,” Fallon continued. “This confirms Americans’ worst suspicions about what goes on in Washington.”

But Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the Benghazi Committee, noted earlier this month in a New York Times op-ed that none of the emails the committee has seen have revealed "anything of consequence" about Clinton's role in Benghazi.
ReplyDelete"The Select Committee became little more than a partisan tool to influence the presidential race, a dangerous precedent that will haunt Congress for decades," Schiff wrote. "The committee is solely concerned with damaging [Clinton's] candidacy, searching for something, anything, that can be insinuated against her."
Last night McCarthy admitted on Fox News that with the Benghazi investigation, republicans were able to bring down Hillary's trustworthiness numbers. "Yikes" said McCarthy aides, according to Luke Russert.

Hillary will be able to use this development in a campaign add
ReplyDelete“Kevin McCarthy’s admission that the Benghazi Committee is a taxpayer funded political hit job to bring down Hillary Clinton should be the final straw for the media, for Members of Congress, for taxpayers and for the families of the four Americans who died in the Benghazi tragedy,” Brock said in a statement Wednesday.
ReplyDelete“It is time this investigation comes to an end and Republicans admit — like McCarthy did last night — that this entire thing was a political sham,” he said. “Next, the House Ethics Committee must open an investigation into this abuse of power and misuse of taxpayer funds for political purposes.”

You better believe it and I want them all censured.
If the Democrats let this go, with only an apology, it is sending a message to those traitors they can do business as usually ie Destroying the USA.
Enough is enough, it is time we take back our country from the teabagger traitors !!!!
Benghazi has been investigated and Hillary has been found to have no responsibility. This is a pure political assaination. Have you no shame republicans?
ReplyDeleteNo shame. No ideas. No chance of actually representing their constituents. No human decency. The party of NO has nothing to offer.

Absolutely nothing, the whole statement @ 8:56 sounds like a republican troll.
DeleteNot my words, but RIGHT on:
ReplyDeleteThe Republicans & the Tea Party are masters of double talk (double speak)!!! They know how accuse others of what THEY did, how to twist facts around to make it look like someone else is responsible and point the finger of blame at them!!! They follow in Hitler’s play book which tells them to: “tell a lie, make it a BIG lie, repeat it often, and people will believe it.” And it DOES work!!! Repetition is one of the tools of learning; we all know that, or at least we should!! The Republican propaganda machine is busy spewing out their twisted ideology every day 24/7, especially on that phony Fox News Channel, owned by Englishman and a Muslim. You would think by now, at least SOME of the middle class would be smart enough to figure out that they’re being royally screwed by the GOP & the Tea Party that are now totally controlled by the Fascist Koch Brothers and their followers!!!!!

ReplyDeleteRemind me again how many hearings republicans had about 9/11? How many republicans insisted that Bush and Cheney should be impeached and arrested for 9/11 intelligence failures?
ReplyDeleteIt's strange. When four Americans died in Benghazi, conservatives told us we should call for Obama head. When 750 times as many Americans died on 9/11, conservatives told us we need to rally around Bush.
And yet they claim conservatives aren't hypocrites and don't have double standards
