Colorado Springs police say they are not going to release motive for the Planned Parenthood shooting. WTF?

Courtesy of Salon:

Colorado Springs police say they will not disclose why a gunman opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic, killing three people.

Police say in a statement Sunday that they are sealing the warrants related to the case against 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear. They say they are not providing information on the weapon used in Friday’s shooting, a timeline of events or a motive of the suspect.

That will continue to stoke speculation about what led to the shooting that killed a police officer and two other people. Dear is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon.

Okay not to be too conspiratorial here but for what reason could a police department have for not releasing this kind of evidence to the media?

I mean usually by this time there have already been a number of police statements as to the motive, condition, and attitude of the defendant. Yet in this case mums the word?

Could it be due to the fact that Colorado Springs is a conservative community, and that many of its residents are deeply religious, that is keeping the police from releasing information which might indicate that Mr. Dear is a fundamentalist with opinions about abortion that were tempered in the fires of religious rhetoric?

That is certainly what the evidence is starting to suggest:

A username apparently connected to Robert Lewis Dear, who is accused of fatally shooting three people, may shed light on the dark side of a man who was a mystery to many until he allegedly opened fire in the Colorado Springs clinic.

The user posted a series of paranoid, Biblical rants on the message boards for Cannabis.com nearly a decade ago.

“aids , hurricanes, we are in the end times,” one post from December 2005 read.

“accept the LORD JESUS while you can.”

Another post weeks later declared: “A FOOL HATH SAID IN HIS HEART THERE IS NO GOD,” adding: “PROVERBS.”

Yet another said: “god made us so he can kill who he wants...the lord giveth the lord taketh away blessed be the name of the LORD.”

It is still too early to jump to conclusions, but that is why it would be very helpful for the police to cooperate with the press and let the public know just who this guy is, and what motivated him to murder three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic.

However it is clear that anti-abortionists are already getting their talking points prepared for if, and when, it turns out this guy was motivated by their rhetoric.

Last night Nancy French, hiding within her faux Bristol Palin camouflage, had this to say about the killings:

I join with the rest of America in grieving over this senseless violence and am deeply saddened that three more souls were added to the countless others who’ve lost their lives at that location.

Which is almost verbatim what Mike Huckabee is also saying:

“There’s no excuse for killing other people, whether it’s inside ... Planned Parenthood clinics, where many millions of babies die, or whether it’s people attacking Planned Parenthood,” Huckabee said.

Of course their argument is at least somewhat more coherent than the one made by Ted Cruz:

When a reporter reminded the Texas senator that the suspect allegedly made a comment about “baby parts” while being arrested, Cruz countered, “It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and transgendered leftist activist, if that’s what he is.”

WTF?

So you see even if Mr. Dear was motivated by those doctored videos, or anti-abortion rantings (Which the conservatives want to point out is NOT proven yet!), it is really no big deal because thousands of potential human beings are killed at that location all of the time. And besides that he is probably a transgendered Democrat who is voting for Hillary, so what's all the fuss?

Of course if the Colorado Springs police would disclose more information we might be able to clear all of this up. But it does not appear they are going to do that anytime soon.

Hmmm. Interesting. That most likely means the police discovered a direct connection to a very powerful person, or persons.

I was in Colo. Springs this past holiday weekend. I was there on Friday. On Friday, there was a terrible OpEd that ran in the Gazette (the main paper) raving against all liberals and mentioned being against abortion. Has anyone in the media made this connection yet? I'm not sure who to send this info to, but surely there were others that noticed it.

    2. Well, I couldn't find that specific OP-ED, and I didn't answer the survey question to go to an article, but reading the comments, the paper is super right-wing and doesn't seem to shy away from publishing what some might characterize as 'crazy talk'. Here's a link if anyone else wants to search. This goes to one of the latest about the dude's hearing today. Things I noted: He will be, at least for now, using a public defender, and no hint of motive was discussed. The possibility of the death penalty was however very much discussed.

The media is beginning to call a spade a spade and has referred to these shootings as being done by a domestic terrorist. Yes, the right does not want these religious nuts with guns referred as such, but they are domestic terrorists and it is damn time were labeled as what they are.

It's not Syrians and Muslims we need to worry about. Homegrown terror is happening every day. And the terrorist has a bible in one hand and a semi automatic in the other.

So are we to assume that Nancy French a/k/a Bristles PayMe advocates for single women have many, many illigitimate babies like her client? When $carah's money runs out, maybe Bristles will face the truth, that raising children is costly and time consuming also, too. I guess the lie about him really robbing a bank not PP did not fly. If the press had done their jobs years ago, we would never have had the PayMe family fouling the internet with their fake Christian idiology. We need to DEMAND the truth about this terrible situation before it happens over and over again.

Twenty five years ago Colorado Springs was a laid back mountain town. The real estate market crashed and Focus on the Family made their move on the place. They cashed in on those cheap houses.

Today even the Air Force Academy has been infiltrated by fundies. A jury of Dear's peers....Oh, yeah......

I was immediately suspicious as all heck as well, but upon reflection I think twodux is right. The Colorado Springs police lost one of their own, a guy who was by all accounts revered in the community: they're going to want to see this guy fry, not "get off" with an insanity plea that would bring a life sentence, no matter how crazy he obviously was at the time of the shootings.

I have one friend that has lived in Colorado Springs for eons and they truly are a very religious community! Too much for me. I've been there twice and plan never to return.

I know of two couples who moved there and left within a year returning to the states they came from. They didn't like the 'feeling' of the right permeating the city/town.

Colorado Springs is also considered the meth capital of Colorado. Huge surprise there--don't fundie areas go in big for that kind of thing?

We actually considered moving there about 25 years ago (not for the meth, for the laid-back mountain-town stuff.) We are more glad every day that we stayed in Denver.

Well, not really a massaging considering the high percentage of violent crime (and non-violent crime) including homicide, by blacks even though they are only around 13% of the population... ie there is an inevitable higher level of interaction between police and African Americans. Yet plenty of whites, like every other race, are also killed by police every year when they are confronted during criminal activities.

The media stands in for the public, and the public has a right to know what happened and who did it. Was he certifiably crazy, in which case how did he get a gun? Did he hate abortions, or the government at large? Was he ever before in prison, or was he dropped on his head as a baby, or -- what caused a fellow citizen to take up arms and kill a police officer and two people inside the clinic? Could he have just gone next door in the shopping mall and opened fire on those getting manicures? What about the Mexican restaurant also in the mall? Why, in particular, did he choose the Planned Parenthood office, when there were so many other targets close at hand?
The public has a right to know how he slipped through the cracks, and what must be done to ensure all of our lives in the future, so that no one will slip through the cracks like this again.

I hope Planned Parenthood has the money and community support to rebuild and once again carry out its Constitutional mission.

The media has a responsibility to ferret out the truth behind this man and his motivation. From my perspective, he's a nutcase who traveled all the way to Colorado Springs because 1) it's full of right-wing nutcases whom he thought would cheer him on and 2) there happened to be, conveniently enough, a Planned Parenthood office there. He may be sentient enough to have thought that he would be relatively safe in killing people at that site while if he pulled his weapon in a shopping center or a school he might get in real trouble. Given the fact that, among others, he killed and harmed police officers, the local police should be more than forthcoming in any discussion of why he did what he did.

And, Bristol, what this guy did was lots worse than what some women, who find that they have few if no alternatives, chose to do when they are in the first months of pregnancy. By the way, Bristol, what became of your DWTS tummy and why have you continued to give Tripp's father and his family so much grief?

Yet the religious nutcases lump ALL clinics together in their attempt to close them. The followers of these uneducated, but fervent, media figureheads are whooping each other into frenzies before grabbing their guns and doing "the lord's work."

      Yes, this is terrorism.

The Palins help support Bristol, not every woman has a family with the means to do that. Maybe if she had been cut loose when she was pregnant the first time, she would know how difficult it is being a single mother. Reality is going to jump up and smack her right in the face once her mothers money dries up. I read that she is shopping around for offers by magazines for the baby photos. What a high opinion she has of herself!! Who cares about the fifth pregnancy of the town slut?

I think the little we know plus the baby parts statement gives us a pretty clear picture of the man and his motivation. Why he did it in Colorado instead of North Carolina, who knows. Does it really matter?

Gryphen, this is off topic, but I thought you'd get a kick out of this:

Most candidates neglect Washington, D.C., when sending out mailers for the Republican presidential primary. So one of the joys of going out of town is seeing what they send unsolicited to people like an 84-year-old retired doctor in Houston, Texas.

And what 2016 candidate Ben Carson sends, as I learned over Thanksgiving, is a lithograph portrait of himself.

"Dear John," an enclosed letter reads, "It is an honor for me to count you as a friend. And I do count you as that. In appreciation, I've sent you this very special, very personal portrait. I hope you can see in the portrait what is in my heart -- a love for God, a love of country, and a deep desire to serve both ... and to serve you."

In a separate letter, again addressed to John, Carson writes that the portrait "was commissioned just so I could give it to you. This makes it very special to me."

Also enclosed with the lithograph was a four-page letter and fundraising appeal: a pre-paid envelope to send back a check and a Newsmax listicle of "12 Reasons Ben Carson Would Make a Good President."

According to NBC News, Stewart, 29, had stepped outside the building to use his cell phone when he was shot by Dear, who killed two other people and injured nine in the attack. Stewart, a devoted husband and father of two, rushed into the building in spite of his injuries and shouted for everyone to take cover.

Muslim cab driver shot by passenger ranting about ISIS terrorists

...“He started the conversation and began to ask questions like, ‘You seem to be like a Pakistani guy. Are you from Pakistan?’” said the driver, who asked to remain anonymous because he feared for his safety.

The driver explained he came from Morocco but insisted he was “an American guy” — but that didn’t satisfy the passenger.

“Then he continued the conversation,” the driver said. “He began to speak about ISIS killing people. I told him ‘Actually, I’m against ISIS. I don’t like them.’ I even told him that they are killing innocent people. I noticed that he changed his tone and he began to satirize Muhammad, my prophet, and began to shift to his personal life. He mentioned that he has two kids and was in prison for some time.”

When they arrived at the man’s house in Hazelwood, he asked the driver to wait because he had left his wallet inside.

“I waited for just five minutes, I think, and I noticed that he came out of the house carrying a rifle in his hand,” the driver said. “I noticed him coming toward me. I didn’t hesitate. I [made] a fast decision to leave and drove my taxi away because I felt he was going to do something, there is danger he would shoot me or something. I felt like he had the intention to kill me.”

The man fired multiple gunshots at the driver’s cab, blasting out the rear window and shooting him in the back.

He was registered as UAF unaffiliated - not a democrat. Many people register as unaffiliated, for a variety of reasons. Also, there was one voting registration where it was marked female as gender. It most likely was a typo, there is no evidence that he has ever "identified" as female. There is no other evidence suggesting that he identified as female. Transgendered women don't typically grow beards.

Before Shooting, Cruz Touted Endorsement From Activist Who Called For Execution Of Abortion Doctors

...But just days before the shooting, Cruz touted the endorsement from an activist who has called for the “execution” of abortion providers. In his 2003 book, Troy Newman said the entire country was “blood-guilty” for their failure to kill “abortionists.”

In addition to our personal guilt in abortion, the United States government has abrogated its responsibility to properly deal with the blood-guilty. This responsibility rightly involves executing convicted murderers, including abortionists, for their crimes in order to expunge bloodguilt from the land and people. Instead, the act of abortion has been elevated to a “God-given right” and the abortionists canonized as saints. Consequently, the entire nation has the blood-red stain of the lives of the innocent upon its head.

Rejecting that innocent blood is to reject the only standard that is effective against innocent bloodshed, excluding the lawful execution of the murderers, which is commanded by God in Scripture.

And now they're going for a true theocracy:

Orrin Hatch wants to tear down the wall of separation between church and state

n a biting editorial, written for the conservative Washington Times, long-time Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) suggests a novel and literal approach to the First Amendment, arguing that the wall of separation between the state and the church is non-existent despite what the Supreme Court has to say about it.

Hatch notes that Thomas Jefferson’s position on religious freedom was embodied in his Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, but that his approach to keeping the state and the church separate was a minority opinion at the time. The more dominant view, according to Hatch, was John Adams’ model, which instituted a “mild and equitable establishment of religion” that enshrined “Christian piety and virtue.”

According to Hatch, since the 1st Amendment specifically states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” only one “actor” is constrained: the U.S. Congress.

“On its face, this language affects only one actor, Congress, not states and local governments, and not individual citizens,” Hatch wrote, asserting that the 1st Amendment “…simply limited Congress’ ability to choose a preferred religious sect.

    1. So Hatch thinks this is a state's rights issue and states can institute a state religion?

      Good luck with that.

I guess he flunked civics since Fed law overrides State law an the Constitution say no establishing a religion.
