Alabama taxpayers to pick up the $51,000 tab for Republicans efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.

Courtesy of TPM:

Not only have Alabama's attempts to defund Planned Parenthood Southeast been blocked by the courts, Alabama taxpayers will also have to foot the bill in the more than $51,000 in legal fees for the reproductive health organization, the Montgomery Advertiser reported, under a settlement filed in federal court Monday morning. The agreement still must be approved by a U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

Other states have faced their own legal obstacles in attempting to defund the healthcare organization. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has warned states that blocking Planned Parenthood's Medicaid funding may not be legal.

In Monday's agreement, Planned Parenthood Southeast said it does not participate in the fetal tissue donation programs that led to the claims that clinics are harvesting tissue for profit.

"Had the governor checked beforehand, he would have known that," ACLU attorney Randall Marshall, who represented Planned Parenthood Southeast, told the Montgomery Advertiser.

Yeah but calling and finding out it was all a waste of time, would not give these idiots that chance to  beat their chests and look like champions for the unborn.

Not children mind you, fuck them, but potential children who are not yet a huge disappointment to their parents.

Man I hope this sends a signal to all of the other right wing politicians thinking about wasting taxpayer money on this witch hunt.

But you know, it probably won't.

Wait until states have to cut funding for other services to pay for these efforts.

    1. Well, the people in Alabama already deal with governmental neglect due to the niggardly response by the legislature to the needs of the populace. They probably won't notice a few more potholes or slower governmental action..

The ability of low information voters to understand the ramifications of this is probably slim to nonexistent.

All my life all I've ever heard about republicans is that they are fiscally conservative. Yea, right. They will blow right through
taxpayer funds if it fits their agenda.

They do it to themselves, it's about time they realize the consequences of their actions.

Put a surcharge on every gun sold, to be given directly to Planned Parenthood.

Well, at least the gun control problem would be solved....

      That's a great idea!

    2. Perfect.

Only the legislators would never approve that.

What I'd like to see is Planned Parenthood put a lien on the state when they refuse to pay the settlement.

Hmm. Rile up the GOP base with media firestorm. Give impression the GOP-controlled government is fighting for the base's interests. Socialize the losses from failed fighting attempt. Result: taxpayer-subsidized GOP get-out-the-vote. Slow clap.

That photo reminds me of the It's Always Sunny episode where Mac becomes a "pro-life" protester so he can have sex with an attractive young extremist.

What got the girl into bed (or rather, laying down in the backseat of a car), was a fake list of abortion doctors Mac was targeting...with a couple names crossed out.

I agree, usually "Alabama Hot" means still having most of your own teeth, she's off the charts for Alabama!

Maybe having to pay for their idiocy will open the eyes of the voters? But seeing where it is, probably not. Uneducated by preference Talibangelicals will never get the message.

Why, that's enough money to purchase a banjo for every family in Alabama!

  11. 'Tis the season for Christian extremist smack downs:

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals today smacked down NOM yet again, rejecting their demand for nearly $700,000 in legal fees from their losing battle with the IRS.

NOM is not a ‘prevailing party’ and is therefore not entitled to attorneys’ fees.” Whoops!

  12. (not caught up on comments, but)
It makes me really sad to see a young person so angry,
as the one pictured in this post, for something I so
    disagree with. Ugh.
I wonder if the young woman pictured with her signs
will ever need services like those provided by PP.

She probably is responsible for herself, and has a job and insurance. That is what responsible persons do, instead of living off the government dole and other peoples money.

Her sign says "studentsforlife," so I'm guessing no job and mommy and daddy are paying for her insurance and living expenses...and probably her tuition, too (although perhaps she has a government student loan).

She's lucky that she can stay on her parents insurance until she's 26, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. She doesn't have to rely on a student health plan. Although thanks again to the Affordable Care Act, college students can get subsidized health coverage.

    3. I'm sure Mommy and Daddy have sent her to school to find a suitable husband. She'll be expected to be married and a stay at home Mom by 26. Then she is her husband's problem.

Well being as she is white, she or her parents probably are paying for her tuition and room and board etc... If she could even get into college. Seeing as affirmative action has sucked out all the money and and pushed lesser qualified miniorities in front of more qualified students just to fill quotas.

She's obviously in college because of the sign she's holding. Perhaps she benefited from gender affirmative action and some more-qualified male student was displaced by this genius who chooses to protest other females' reproductive rights rather than study for her midterms.

I am curious exactly how affirmative action has "sucked out all the money."

Results Of New ‘Pro-Life’ Study Utterly Damning For Christian Church

A new study conducted by the Christian research group, LifeWay, found that 70 percent of women who had an abortion are Christian. The study, which was commissioned by the anti-abortion group Care Net, found abortion rates are highest among Catholic and Protestant Christians, with non-denominational Christians making up the third largest demographic.

According to published report, the study included a sampling of 1,038 women who have “had an abortion/pregnancy termination/abortion medical procedure.”

A full 70 percent of the women surveyed identified as Christian, with the majority belonging to the rabidly anti-choice Catholic faith. Coming in close second, however, were protestant women, who accounted for 26 percent of the sampling, compared to Catholic women, who made up another 27 percent of the group.

  14. Good.

Maybe if enough taxpayers in enough states had their services cut because their tax money was going to pay court costs for losing such cases, the taxpayers would be calling their representatives going What The EFF!

I suppose it would be too much for them to fail to re-elect the bozos.
