GOP Chairman Reince Priebus is worried about holding onto the Senate in 2016. And he should be.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus conceded it will be "tough" for his party to keep its majority in the Senate in the 2016 elections, but voiced confidence the GOP will maintain control of both chambers of Congress.

"The Senate is important. It's very critical and it's always tough to hold the Senate, but I think we're doing everything we can do to that," Priebus told host John Catsimatidis in an interview airing Sunday on “The Cats Roundtable” on New York's AM-970.

Democrats are hopeful they can take back control of the Senate, which they lost to Republicans in the 2014 midterm elections.

The electoral map is tilting in the Democrats' favor. Republicans must defend 24 Senate seats, including more than a half-dozen in toss-up or Democratic-leaning states. Democrats are only defending 10 seats.

The demographic makeup of the electorate in presidential years is more favorable to Democrats than it is to the GOP, something Priebus seemed to acknowledge.

I think that "Rinse Twice and Priebus" SHOULD be concerned about the Senate, because it is VERY likely that the Democrats will take back control.

I am less confident about the House, though there ARE thirty three Republicans retiring in 2016 compared to only fourteen Democrats.

But even if the Dems only get the Senate back that means a Democratic President will have a far easier time, at least at the beginning of their term, than President Obama currently enjoys today.

And that is good for the country.

However I think that might be short lived.

This next part is pure speculation on my part but I feel pretty strongly about it.

I think that IF we take the Senate that it could only last until the next election cycle in 2018, unless there is a very significant shift in the demographic between now and then.

What's also quite possible, and in my opinion probable, is that Hillary only gets to serve one term and is ousted in 2020.

There are a couple of reasons I think this is likely,

The first is that there will be incredible blowback against her from the Republicans starting even before she takes the oath of office, just like with President Obama.

The second is that by 2020 Democrats will have held the presidency for twelve years and no party has lasted longer than that since Democrats Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman held the office for twenty years combined.

I think the Democrat's only hope of hanging onto significant power moving forward is if the GOP keeps devouring itself from within, and continues to allow clowns like Donald Trump to hold center stage.

But to be honest I am not entirely sure that is good for the country.

Alaskans need to work together to get rid of Lisa Murkowski and then later Dan "no friend to veterans" Sullivan. So, who will the Ds run against Lisa? I hope the Rs lose the US Senate after the next election.

    1. You should concentrate on getting rid of Sullivan first. Not all Murkowski's votes were bad. Most maybe not not all. Sullivan is a turd and needs to be flushed as soon as possible.

I think that the GOP has already slit their own throat. Clowns are funny. The GOP? Pitiful. Truly. Just pitiful. They are so out of step with the reality of the world and this present. They've stayed too long. This is not yesterday.

If it weren't for big money exchanging hands and tricks of Diebold machines programming, and it came down to a popular vote, the GOP would lose every time.

@4:22. You forgot the very real but far less conspiratorial gerrymandering.

    3. If the Democrats would take a few pages from the Republican playbook, it would be easy to expose the Republicans and paint them with their true colors for all to see. Let the public see EXACTLY what they're voting for.

There IS no GOP anymore. We need a new name for the party of Trump.

I guess old Reince is saying what the rest of us are thinking? I mean really, how idiotic do you have to be to see that their party is in the toilet and is basically already swirled down into the septic system? Thanks Rinse but you are preaching to the choir, and my parents are Republicans!

  7. A one-term Hillary wouldn't be dreadful provided she gets to make at least two Supreme Court replacements. Obama on the court is still my dream.

I respectfully disagree Gryphen. The nationwide demographics have really tilted toward Democrats keeping control. The House is a different matter considering how dishonest republicans have gerrymandered things so much that the GOP is likely to keep winning.

But if things continue as they are with GOP presidential candidates, I think we'll see a second Hillary term. Unless the GOP somehow finds their own version of Obama...someone who the GOP base is super excited about who can even excite independents and a few democrats. Stranger things have happened

Meanwhile the GOP is working with the scientists from Jurassic Park to see how they can clone St Reagan

    1. LOL.

Except Reagan would NEVER win in today's political climate.

    2. The problem with relying on demographics is that a shifting voting population is no good to us unless they get out to vote.

The gerrymandering in 2010 is largely our fault because Democrats didn't vote as we did in 2008. Same problem with 2014.

Another issue is that we lost big in 2014, not only because we didn't get out to vote, but that every senator that year had been voted in in 2008, a year of Democratic wave. Many were in office because of that one flukey election year and really had no chance of being elected in a non-wave year.

  11. We could talk the Senate and eventually the House and keep Democrats in the White House if we do one thing.

Democrats VOTE in every election, not just presidential elections. If all Democrats got off their lazy asses and went to the polls to vote, then the Republicans wouldn't keep taking back seats and shifting the majority. You'd think they'd get a clue. This country suffers when Democrats don't vote. Then when we regain the seats we've lost, we spend too much time fixing what the Republicans broke. This country would make a lot more progress if all Democrats would VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION.

    It's laziness. Just plain laziness.

And this election it better not be petty sulking because either Hillary or Bernie didn't make it on the ticket. Whoever is on the ticket, we all need to vote for them. (This is why I feel so strongly that both Bernie and Hillary need to be on the ticket. The primary is just to see who's on top.)

As the country experiences more extreme weather events (Christmas tornadoes that kill people) I believe it will be harder for Republicans to get elected. Why vote for a party that denies science when it means your family is in danger from violent storms (a much bigger threat than ISIS in the US).

Not a single vote has been cast in a primary let alone a general election and you're talking about Hillary like it's a done deal. LOL. It's like Dec 2007 all over again. Haven't Hillary supporter learned? Slovenian proverb: "Don't praise the day before evening."
