Boy I wish I was smart.

Courtesy of Fast Company:

People are living longer than ever, says a report from the World Health Organization (WHO), but smart people live longer yet. People who are, shall we say, less smart die younger than more intelligent folks, and various studies around the world are attempting to find out why.

IQ affects how long you manage to stick around in this life, with a 15% increase in IQ giving a 21% better chance of not dying. These numbers come from a cohort study by researchers Lawrence Whalley and Ian Deary, using the Scottish Mental Surveys, a historic survey in which almost all 11-year-olds in Scotland got the same IQ test on the same day in 1932. The new study found out which of these subjects were still alive, and at which age others had died.

Scientific American cites one example, where "a person with an IQ of 115 was 21% more likely to be alive at age 76 than a person with an IQ of 100 (the average for the general population)."

Socrates said that "The unexamined life is not worth living."

And I have ALWAYS believed that to be true.

Perhaps one of the reasons that intelligent people live longer is because we don't want to leave until we have figured out the mysteries of life, witnessed every new creation, and basked in the glow of an enlightened planet.

Or perhaps that is just me.

    It's just you, Gryphen.

All I want to is die with all the housework done and my affairs in order.

    That'll never happen.

One reason intelligent people live longer is that they are the ones asked to hold the beers.

The dimbulbs with the ideas are the ones at higher risk...

Does this mean that I may outlive the cursed Palin tribe? My mom, who is harp as a tack at 85, was depressed back in 2008 because she was sure that the evil Sarah would still be spewing her crap when my mom died...or maybe not!

That, and the phrase "Hold my beer--watch this" is rarely in our lexicon.

I'm 29, and I get excited thinking about how much the world will have changed in 50 years. I definitely would still like to be around and see all of that history, as long as I'm still healthy enough to enjoy and appreciate it.

Of course, that depends a lot on how badly the world's climate has deteriorated and the types of war's fought due to it.

Intelligent people are also more likely to have fewer worries over basics like adequate and appropriate food, housing and employment because they are better educated and more stably employed than many others. Intelligent people also have an obligation to help those who are less successful than they.

"And I have ALWAYS believed that to be true." And now I know you've never met my mother in law. Craziest bitch on the planet, yes, crazier than any Palin.

This would be good news if I hadn't stepped into that automobile being driven by, apparently, a real dummy.

Intelligent people do not follow the mainstream - they investigate. They don't take for granted that the docs/drug companies are gods. Doesn't mean intelligent people don't get sick, they do. However they do their own research to find the best natural ways to stay healthy or regain their health.

I think that a lot has to do with using your brains, living a good life, and planning ahead. My SIL, bless her white cotton socks, lives from paycheck to paycheck, falls for get rich quick schemes, then begs the family for mortgage money etc.
I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't have a cushion, savings in the bank, investments etc. The women in my family live much longer than the men, and I've noticed the women keep their minds occupied, (doing the NYT crossword puzzle in pen with no reference material handy was my great aunt's favorite activity, that, men, and playing cards. She lived to be 101 and gardened, did her own housework etc. till the last day.
