Yes everybody I am fine. The earth in fact did NOT swallow me up.

Safeway store on the Kenai Peninsula.
So last night, at a truly unreasonable 1:30 AM, the ground beneath my feet doth shake, waking me from my most blissful slumber.

I'm not gonna lie, even for this veteran of a hundred or more earthquakes, THAT was a serious wake up call.

According to Alaska Dispatch the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was centered at Anchor Point which is a little over two hundred miles from Anchorage.

Anyhow besides being awakened in the middle of the damn night, the only real damage done at the Gryphen Fortress of Fearless Blogging, was that a picture fell off my daughter's wall.

However thanks for checking in on me everybody, I appreciate the concern.

Glad that you're OK. We've had a couple very small ones where I live and that was scary.

Good to know you're all right, Gryph. I read somewhere that it lasted four minutes. I am not inclined to believe every last thing I read on the internet but, if true, that's some scary stuff.

    1. Well it DID go on for quite awhile, but did not feel like four minutes.

Though to be honest I was still a little groggy.

Four minutes? The rumbling here on the dead lake has lasted for days! Oh, no, please, not the Chef Boyard--OUCH!!!

International Senter for Seismology (ICIS) officials have reported that the epicenter of this massive earthquake was Lake Lucille in Wasilla, Alaska.

While it's true that deep wells have been correlated with earthquakes, I suspect plate tectonics dwarfs anything we humans can do.

The quake was the result of Sarah stomping and screaming over yet another of Tina Fey's flawless impersonations on SNL.

Hate to break it to you, but M7.1 200 miles from Anchorage is a puny earthquake by AK standards. After a quake like that the biggest concern is the 5% or so chance that it will turn out to be a foreshock.

It was a pretty serious tectonic event. There have been nearly 50 aftershocks, some as large as 4.2. A spur of the Castle Mountain Fault, called the Bruin Bay fault, runs right through this area. I'm hoping it it wasn't a foreshock because the event was rather unsettling. Haven't had that much house movement since the Denali quake in 2002.

I found your blog when Palin first came on the national scene because I wanted to know more about her. It didn't take long to find out how horrible she was and what a fraud the GOP was pulling.

Thanks for all of your hard work on I.M.! And don't laugh up in Alaska.....we are FREEZING in Central Florida, LOL.

I live on the Kenai Peninsula and power was lost as a result. The shaking tossed things from my shelves and I had to clean up. Got pretty cold in my house, but all is restored now and I'm very happy. Homer Electric is the best!

  17. Glad you're okay. 7.1 sounds mighty major, even if you're 200 miles away. (I get alarmed when I feel anything over a 4).
I understand they've evacuated folks nearer the epicenter due to a gas leak. Please let us know how everyone's doing. And whether Sarah delivers cookies! Again, glad you're okay - lots of people need you.

O/T But it seems that Julia O'Malley has come to Palin's defense with a sob story of how she wasn't always the awful person she is now. Once again, never mentioning how she brought it all on herself.

CBS Sunday Morning just had a great interview with President Obama. What an amazing, intelligent, thoughtful man. I will miss him at the helm. By the way, Mildred, he said he wouldn't do a third term, even if he could. Darn. So much for our dream.

  22. That was some scary ass scary shit. A trophy fell from my shelf and the base of it hit my poor kitty right on the back, but other than that nobody was hurt.

It's funny you don't feel like it went on for 4mins.....I felt like it was going on forever. Not as bad after the first maybe 90sec but definitely not a walk in the yard either. I felt my stomach like dropping....and bc it had woken me up I didn't have my contacts in or anything and I just felt so badly prepared for if a fire started or something. I'm making an emergency bag today for future issues like this.

Glad to hear everything's safe at Casa Gryphen. I saw a funny comment this morning: when they upgraded the intensity from 6.9 to 7.1 an Alaskan said that it may be a 7.1 on their scale, but it was a 9.0 on the poop your pants scale.
