Bernie Sanders supporters "feel the bird."

Courtesy of The Guardian:

The bird, breed unknown, alighted on the stage before flying up to the Democratic presidential hopeful’s podium. Sanders stood smiling and laughing at the little feller for a few seconds as the crowd cheered – whether it was for the bird or their candidate was not clear.

At one point Sanders shrugged his shoulders at Mr Bird as if to say, “Waddya know – you’re a hit.

”The bird, seemingly nonplussed by all the attention, did not stay long though, and after he flitted off, Sanders said: “I think there may be some symbolism here. I know it doesn’t look like it, but that bird is really a dove asking us world peace.”

I have to admit, that is pretty awesome.

However right now I am standing among a group of my fellow Alaskans preparing to caucus for Hillary Clinton. Because even though I am impressed by Sanders Disneyesque ability to communicate with our fine feathered friends, I still want a proven Democratic leader in the White House.

But hey if I ever have a small woodland creature in my home who refuses to leave I now know who to call.

    Unfortunately I can't caucus for Hillary today due to a family emergency. I sincerely thank all Alaskans who see the writing on the wall if BS was the nominee. ~ Learned our lesson from another career politician without credentials who ran on an anti-establishment platform. All ego disguised as caring about everyday people. Don't let BS pull the wool over your eyes.

      I hardly think Bernie is "ego" driven at his age. I wouldn't even disrespect Hillary by claiming that and it would be a stronger argument that she is "ego" driven.

      Bernie Sanders' apparently thinks he can pull off a 'revolution' by his ownself.

      "I asked about his unwillingness to endorse his fellow progressives. He said it wasn't his role. I suggested voters might expect him to weigh in. He disagreed, clearly annoyed at the persistent questioning. Finally I suggested that he had a larger moral responsibility to the progressive movement.

      "At which point he jumped out of his seat, told me to go f*** myself and stormed out of the edit board meeting."

      So, to those who are pointing out negative news stories about Bernie, should we assume that every negative opinion of or article about Hillary has merit? Are all the attacks on President Obama valid? I don't see the point of trying to sway other Democrats to your candidate by attacking theirs. I respect Hillary's voters and ask that they show me the same respect.

      Delete
    12. Anonymous1:28 PM

      12:48pm - I thought the whole point of the nominating process was to consider positive and negative to decide on whom is the best candidate. Of course, the merit of all information, positive and negative, should be considered. You don't have to read negative articles about Sanders if you don't want to but, if he gets the nomination, his negatives will possibly deny Democrats a win in the general. The GOP and the media have barely begun to vet him.

      Also, pointing out a factual negative is not an 'attack'.

      Delete
    13. Anonymous2:33 PM

      Pointing out that someone thinks Bernie is a grouch is meritless, much like calling Hillary a ball buster or shrill. Tell me what policies you disagree with or of corruption, not that he licks his lips too often. I am fine with serious issues, but the majority of this comment thread wasn't about that.

    I hate to be a kill joy but the bird was most likely a foreign import called a house sparrow. They are not native nor protected by our migratory bird act. They are destructive and kill not only our native birds but also destroy their eggs and slaughter their young to take over prime nesting spots.
    I fight these things, as in trap and destroy, every year because I want our native species to thrive, mainly the beautiful melodious bluebird and the sweet tree swallows, as well as purple martins and other cavity nesting birds.
    So much for symbolism....

      Bernie Sanders is popular because he's outspoken and delivers the harsh truth regarding the corruption and greedy banks who're in collusion with the Wall Street bastards that never faced one day in jail for their part in destroying our economy, including the middle class and creating the 1% kings who live large on tax payers money.

    WHO IS MARY JANE O'MEARA SANDERS?

    Talking about a politician's spouse's looks is out of bounds.

    But talking about what they did and what they are doing for their spouse's campaign is fair game.

    Keep in mind as you read below, Bernie Sanders is talking about college and relies on his wife as his advisor and aide.

    As you read below you will find out that Mrs. Sanders resigned as president of Burlington College that has a student body of 200.

    If you were to ask Mrs. Sanders why she left Burlington College would she tell you she turned in her resignation?

    But did she really resign or was she pushed out? Was she offered "you either resign and keep your honor or get fired"?

    I don't know what happened but as you read Wikipedia below you will see Burlington College President Sanders resigned, left the college and accepted $200,000 severance.

    Who do you know who voluntarily turns in their resignation and receives $200,000 severance to leave?

    Mrs. Sanders annual salary was $160,000 and she received $200,000 to resign? Doesn't make sense?

    So I question a presidential candidate who is fighting for college students who has an advisor who may have been paid to quit her job as president of a small college.

    WIKIPEDIA:
    Mary Jane O'Meara Sanders (Adviser and aide to Bernie Sanders
    In 2015, Bernie Sanders described his wife as "one of his key advisers",[2] and he employed her at various times as "an administrative assistant, spokeswoman, policy adviser, chief of staff, and media buyer".[2] In a 1996 article in The Washington Post, she was credited with helping him draft "more than 50 pieces of legislation".[9]

    She has served in Sanders's Congressional office as Chief of Staff and as Policy and Press Adviser.[8]

    Burlington College presidency:
    Sanders was named President of Burlington College, a private, non-profit liberal arts Vermont school, in 2004.[1][2] Reports of dissatisfaction with her presidency surfaced in 2008, with some students and staff going to the press with assertions that blamed what they described as a "toxic and disruptive environment" on Sanders.[10] In 2011, the college trustees, while crediting Sanders with acquiring a permanent campus for the 200-student college founded in 1972, called a meeting for September 2011 with an agenda item reading "Removal of the President" and accepted Sanders's resignation.[2][11][12] Sanders's salary as President was $160,000, and she received a $200,000 severance.

      Bernie is talking about public colleges and universities, not the private school that his wife worked at. Who knows what really went on? Was she pushing too hard to make it into a larger and more significant school? Did she not have the backing of the big donors, who really ran the show? Did they have another, more pliable candidate in mind? Politics.

      It makes sense if you are familiar with university presidents and their salaries. Read Inside Higher Ed (IHE) or the Chronicle of Higher Education (CHE) for a few days. Her salary and her severance package sound quite modest, relatively speaking.

      University presidents have a number of constituencies to satisfy, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and last but certainly not least, the trustees or controllers that oversee the university. University politics make the republican primaries look like a walk in the park. It is not uncommon for a decent person and competent president to be out on their ear not long after taking the position.

    I respect the sincerity of the anti-Wall Street protesters over the years but I must say that they have never made their point well. Where I live, we've had protesters every Saturday morning, summer and winter, since 2008, standing on the sidewalks on opposite sides of our main street with signs mainly castigating banks. When they first appeared I asked one gentleman why they were standing in front of a bookstore that has quite liberal leanings and not in front of the local offices of our then-congressman who chaired the House Ways and Means Committee, responsible for moving legislative initiatives along. At the time, because he was a Republican, he made sure that absolutely nothing that benefitted the American people, moved along. The gentleman with the sign stared at me, obviously not having any idea what I was talking about, and another person said that theirs was "not a political movement." I didn't bother to ask why they were not in front of one of our many banking establishments, one of which was merely feet away, because that might not have made any sense to them either. I still admire their stalwartly yet naive behavior but their time has come and gone.

    Bernie Sanders, as a member of Congress and their lone hero, has had years of opportunity to make a difference but he has failed to do so, much like his supporters who stand on both sides of the street every Saturday. If these people stay away from the polls on election day 2016 as a protest against any other nominee of the Democratic Party (especially Hillary Clinton), they will in essence be voting for which lunatic the GOP nominates.

      Anon at 12:59 pm, I don't understand what you're trying to say. I supported Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, would love to do so again, but I have always thought that Hillary Clinton was and is a very worthy candidate. She gets my support this year because she's down to earth, realistic, liberal and interested in making things better for all. I do not think that Bernie Sanders is able to work with people to make things better. He does not appear to be interested in compromise. At this point he is using the Democratic Party and not working with it and that's just plain wrong.

    I just came back from caucusing for Bernie. It was very interesting to listen to those who spoke for Hillary tell us all about when their "love affair" (their words not mine) began. In the end none of them had a good reason to vote for her, other than they just love her! Squeeeee! Myself, I refused to make a final decision until today. Too many of you are too invested and act like star struck teenagers whose candidate can do no wrong. Even when your gut tells you she's wrong, you go on to make excuses for her. I wish more of you would listen to your gut and get over your "love affairs"

      My gut says there is something amiss with BS. I've never had a love affair with Hillary. I caucused for BO. ~ IF BS is the nominee, I hope I'm wrong. ~ Sure he can beat Trump or Cruz, but I think GOP are going to pull out someone at their brokered convention who BS can't beat. GOP is going to own the media with all their anti-socialism and anti-Jewish and family values (BS "illegitimate" child.etc.)

    3. Oh, please, you could switch Hillary and Bernie and write the same exact paragraph.

      Why is it so hard to believe that supporters of each candidate have studied the positions of both and have come to a thoughtful decision either way?

    She's "proven," all right. A proven liar and, for voting to allow three war criminals to take this country into an unnecessary, illegal war, knowing that thousands of Americans would be killed, maimed, and wounded, she's also a proven, depraved lunatic.

    A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for the same Wall Street, corporate-run US government. I want change! If Republicans still control hold Congress, she's not going to have any better luck than Bernie would in getting anything done. Just another Clinton lie, but keep on falling for everything you hear on corporate-owned TV! They love Hillary, because they know she's going to have their back!

      Okay, so you'll vote for whomever the GOP digs up for the ballot in the fall. I don't particularly like Bernie Sanders, but, if he becomes the Democratic nominee, I will support him. Sitting out the 2016 election is an invitation to disaster - government by the Kochs and their ilk for the Kochs and their ilk.

      "They [corporate media]love Hillary, because they know she's going to have their back!"

      I've not seen one negative corporate media report on Sanders, only about his big crowds. My take-away is that they're pushing Sanders, perhaps because they think a Sanders-Trump horse-race would bring in more advertising dollars. Interesting that there seems to be some subjective factors in how we see the media reporting.

    Oh, and the only way she's winning is by cheating with the "super" delegate count. That was by DNC design to make sure she got the nomination. She doesn't draw anywhere near the crowds that Bernie does because people aren't excited about her at all.

    Go ahead and vote for her! You might as well be voting for a neoconservative hawk. Loved the recent photo of her hugging and loving it up with George W. Bush. I'm voting for someone who would rather vomit than hug that war criminal and lunatic.

    The "supreme court" concern is just a canard. If everyone had gotten behind Bernie Sanders, a very strong message would have been sent to the DNC, because the Republicans aren't going to win in November.

    While you were being gullible and buying into all the corporate-owned media spin on how Hillary is the "proven" leader, Obama put an ex-pharmaceutacal executive in charge of the FDA.

    But go ahead and vote for Bill and Hillary!

    4. AKRNHSNC10:15 AM

      If you think that superdelegates equals cheating, why aren't you upset with Sanders for trying to sway them over to his side? Is it OK if Sanders has them but not Hillary? Your boy is far from the saint he's made out to be. His assets and income are hidden in his wife's name so nobody realizes that he's part of the top5% of the country in wealth. Instead, he pretends he's poor. If he's not pretending, then at the age of 75 with a salary such as his and that which his wife has had, to have $25 to 65k in credit card debt is proof he has no idea what to do when it comes to finances.

      Here are just a few interesting links about Sanders. What they prove is that there is plenty for the GOP to use against him, should a miracle occur and he becomes the nominee. What they don't have, they'll fabricate just as they have done to Hillary for 25 years.

    I just got back from the Anchorage Caucus and my district went 1/3 for Hillary, 2/3 for Bernie. We Hillary supporters (I went with Obama last time) were good natured about our crushing defeat.........and we all agreed that we would support Bernie if he gets it. I just hope that the boisterous Bernie supporters that we lost to have the same attitude, as a Trump or Cruz or ANY other Republican will be a disaster. Democrats need to stick together........look what happened when Nader siphoned off just a few votes. It could happen again!

  43. In our increasingly crass and inhumane politics, Bernie is our Jewish Saint Francis of Assisi (the patron saint of animals & the environment). And in more ways than just this one.

    Francis’ devotion was expressed through his love for all of God's creation, as he cared for the poor and sick, preached sermons to animals, and praised ALL creatures as brothers and sisters under God. His beliefs and works are summarized in the prayer below. Even if you’re a different religion, or no religion at all, it’s worth reading, and taking to heart:

    Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

    Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

    where there is injury,pardon;

    where there is doubt, faith;

    where there is despair, hope;

    where there is darkness, light;

    and where there is sadness, joy.

    O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

    to be consoled as to console;

    to be understood as to understand;

    to be loved as to love.

    For it is in giving that we receive;

    it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

    and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
