How Susan Sarandon single-handedly turned me against Bernie Sanders supporters.

Courtesy of the Daily Beast:

As they continued to discuss the issue, Hayes pressed Sarandon to see the election as potentially a choice between Clinton and Trump, arguing that Sanders himself would “probably” urge his supporters to vote for her.

“I think Bernie would probably encourage people, because he doesn’t have any ego in this thing,” Sarandon told him. “But I think a lot of people are, ‘Sorry, I just can’t bring myself to [vote for Clinton].’”

“How about you personally?” Hayes asked.

“I don’t know. I’m going to see what happens,” Sarandon said.

That bit of honesty prompted Hayes to stop in his tracks. “Really?” he asked incredulously.

“Really,” Sarandon said, adding that “some people feel that Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in, things will really explode.” Asked if she thinks that’s “dangerous,” she replied, “It’s dangerous to think that we can continue the way we are with the militarized police force, with privatized prisons, with the death penalty, with the low minimum wage, threats to women’s rights and think you can’t do something huge to turn that around.”

So to Susan Sarandon, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are two sides of the same "revolution?"

WTF?

You know I sometimes joke on here about yelling at my TV set, but during this interview I literally was yelling at my TV set.

It's not that Sarandon did not make good points about Clinton's ties to Monsanto and fracking, she did. However these are small parts of a much bigger picture, a picture that Sarandon and many other supporters of Bernie Sanders seem unable to fully appreciate.

Such as the importance of making sure we have somebody who will continue to support the Affordable Care Act, will select reasonable Supreme Court nominees who will fight for women's right to choose and help overturn the Citizen's United decision, and has the capability to bring in more Democrats to the House and Senate so that we can start to make some real progress in this country concerning improved infrastructure and moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

After I watched it I went downstairs to talk to my daughter about it, and she responded by telling me that a large number of Sanders supporters were of the same opinion as Sarandon. (This after she assured me she was not one of them of course.)

I think I kind of lost it after that, and started ranting about how Sanders was not supporting down ticket Democrats, so his ideas were pie in the sky fantasies that would elicit very little support from Democrats who worried about retaining their seats once Bernie's big socialist agenda crashed and burned on liftoff.

I also said that anybody who has lived through the sixties and seventies knows full well that revolutions in the United States do not bring huge changes, but good ideas can take root, and change can occur, if people remain realistic and keep pushing their agenda even in the face of entrenched opposition.

I also ranted that people like this were the crux of the problem because they sit out midterm elections, and fail to support local elections, and then every four years awaken from their political hibernation to bitch about the process and throw their support behind the spoiler candidate who has little if any chance of winning.

By the end I had decided that I was simply done with Bernie Sanders.

I KNOW that some of you are Bernie supporters, and I want to be sympathetic to your point of view, but at this point I am finding it almost impossible to feign neutrality in the face of the bullshit that I am seeing.

Even the Republicans are in on this scam

The only ones who don't seem to recognize what is happening here are the Sanders supporters themselves, and unless they wake up they will soon find themselves living in a country where revolution really WILL seem like the only viable alternative.

Perhaps you missed, or skimmed over, the place where he wrote, "Sarandon and many other supporters"? Perhaps you also missed, "my daughter … telling me that a large number of Sanders supporters were of the same opinion as Sarandon"?

Perhaps you failed to notice that practically all that he wrote was directed at Sanders supporters generally, not just at Sarandon?

So then, it wasn't 'single-handedly'. There are other reasons. You already had your reservations. That cool. It wasn't a false equivalency if this had been the only reason. Both would be over simplified.

I respectfully have to disagree Gryphen. At our caucus, everyone said that they would vote for whomever is the candidate on the Democratic ticket, be it Sanders or Clinton although they obviously preferred their choice, which was overwhelmingly Sanders. I remember much the same arguments when Obama first campaigned for president, although it was more of a black man cannot be president than an old white man who is a Progressive Socialist cannot be president. President Obama has been awesome, who's to say that President Sanders may not also be an awesome president working for the people and the corporations in the country. Straight Democratic ticket.

I am disturbed that he seems unconcerned with the ticket and the bigger picture in D.C. and the election (e.g. Congress). I initially loved him for what he said, and thought he was a great "loyal opposistion." I don't think he is a great executive - I'm not sure of that, just my best guess - although I love many of his ideas. I'm losing that opinion of him as a great loyal opposition. Now I think he might not recognize that the perfect is the enemy of the good, or perhaps he would cut off his nose to spite his face.

The link to the article I read gives your viewpoint further credibility. Bernie will cut off his nose to spite his face. He has voted against bills many times that would do good for the majority because it didn't cover 100% of what he wanted. He's not willing to make any concessions or take steps to achieve what he desires. With Sanders, it's all or nothing. Clinton is the opposite and far more realistic.

In the GWN (Great White North), we have never had "revolution" as part of our history. We have evolved, instead, into the sort of social democratic country that Sanders and his supporters would like to see. Perhaps, given that the birth of the U.S. came about because of revolution, it's in your DNA. But times have changed, and the health and welfare of your citizens through government decree have come about in small steps. That's the way of the world in civilized, first world countries.

Well, guess what, by sitting out rather than voting for the best option, they are no better than Mitch McConnell or Paul Ryan or any of the others who want to hold up everything until they get what THEY want. Here is what I say to them: Grow up and vote and be a positive influence instead of just another spoiled rotten temper tantrum 2 year old crying and flailing on the floor because things aren't going totally and 100% your way. If he ends up as our nominee, I will vote for him. But I can not see any possibility that he could win. Despite Endorsing Trump, Sarah Palin's PAC Fundraises Off Ted Cruz

      Per Weekly Standard:

Sarah Palin endorsed Donald Trump for president in January, but in a clear sign that Trump isn't unifying the GOP, Sarah Palin's political action committee, SarahPAC, sent out a fundraising email today that doesn't mention Trump. Instead, the fundraising plea asks for money to help "elect new conservatives in 2016 like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz":

Compulsive Liar, Dishonest Person, the rules are for the little people, I am a Clinton, War Monger, Trade deal Cheerleader, Wall Street Stan, Flip Flops within same sentence.

I've seen two interviews with Sanders where he was asked, but failed, to clearly define Democratic Socialism. He said to think of Norway, that he was for healthcare for all and free college education, and 'I'm not a capitalist. He says he believes we need to change our economic system but hasn't explained what this would look like or what it means to be 'not a capitalist'. If he wins the Democratic nomination, the opposition will scare the shit out of our mostly center/center-right electorate and we'll likely have a GOP president and majority in both houses of Congress...and lose the gains made under Pres. Obama. And, no, there won't be a revolution so long as people have jobs and there's not a reinstatement of the draft for an unpopular and disastrous war. It's kind of infuriating that Sanders' supporters don't understand that the country is better off now than it was 8 years ago and that we need to solidify the gains and keep moving forward--that we need to strengthen the Democratic Party and make gains in all state and federal elections.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I support Sanders. I've supported Sanders for over 20 years. Without him the Democratic Party would continue it's drift towards moderate GOP/Democratic merger. While the government should be run generally from the center, that "center" has moved right. I generally support Clinton but her reinvention of a candidate to the left of Sanders is inauthentic. And insulting. Sanders has moved the discussion, for the better, to some of the overall issues of the day. Namely income inequality and the oligarchy running this country. While I will readily accept that Clinton is far better than the GOP clowns, I will not agree that she is some valiant knight for liberal values. She does support many of those issues, choice, equal pay, etc. She is also a product of the capitalist elite. And she will under no circumstances change that. And will increase intrusions into privacy, continue to support economic terrorism against countries not aligned with capitalism, and all the other things that continue to make my old party something I don't recognize.
If you don't want to support Sanders, fine. If you don't like to tone of the campaign, fine, but place blame where it belongs. And if you are done with Sanders supporters because of what one or a few say, well, that's a bit over the top. After all, if I can tolerate Clinton supporters I would expect the same from people that generally have the same values as I have. Some of us are just a bit more passionate about them and a bit more disillusioned from our party's elite. PS: all of the Sanders supporters I know understand that he cannot win...but also know that's because of the rigged process in the party and the Superdelegates. We just like our concerns being front and center for a change.

Well said. Clinton supporters who keep yelling "free college" are just like the Republicans screaming "free phones!". There is a lot more to Bernie's campaign-life long campaign, by the way-than free college. Hillary has so many people she needs to pay back that it must keep her up at night. She is beholden to the folks who own the prisons-why would she try to change the prison system? Her record as Secretary of State, regarding the women and children of other countries, is horrifying. Voting for her just because she'd be the first woman president is as stupid as voting for Bernie just because of free college. As for the rigged part-oh hell yeah. The head of the DNC is so far up Clinton's ass that it's pathetic. The way she tried to bury the debates was disgusting. She can thank herself for losing the mid terms, due to her complete lack of effort. And now Obama endorses her for re-election, calling her a progressive. This, in spite of her effort to support predatory lending practices along with the freakin' Republicans. Go ahead, people. Just buy into the idea that nothing can change. That will make damn sure that nothing ever does.

Where were all these supporters who wanted things to change in 2014 for the mid-terms? They weren't all ineligible to vote at that time. Did they all just wake up politically due to Sanders fantastic fairy tales about free college and universal health care with only a "small" increase in taxes? I love millenials with their positive outlook for the future but they also need to be more realistic. This is the reason why there are so many Bernie supporters out there. My son was telling me that his friends think he's crazy because he's supporting Hillary. He's 24 and is very aware of what is going on in politics and the world around us. He didn't start with this election as he said many of his friends did. He thinks that a lot of them have no idea what Sanders really is proposing or the fact that none of this will occur without a Congress that will work with him. He also said that it's a "follow your peers" attitude that has brought out so many in support of Sanders. He compares it to championship sporting events where people root for the home team yet often are clueless as to who the players are, how the game is actually played and what went on during the entire season. I think he hit the nail on the head with that one.

I mentioned to a Sanders supporter that Bernie knows his universal healthcare plan is dead without minimum wage being increased to $15. She didn't believe me and said he'll never give up. I asked her why he didn't run for President during the last 30 years which is when he started talking about it. No answer. Why didn't he run in '12 when he wanted Obama primaried? Again, no answer. I asked her how she could believe he wasn't an establishment member when he'd been in Washington for 25 years. Then she said to me whatever he has done before this has no impact on what he's doing now, that his plans for now are the only thing that's important. So I asked her why she holds Clinton's vote for the Iraq war against her if that happened 14 years ago. Of course, she didn't acknowledge the hypocrisy or the fact that they vote alike 93% of the time. The reason why I bring this up is because she was telling other posters how well-informed she was and that is why she was able to confidently stand behind Sanders. Clueless, absolutely clueless!

The good thing about Bernie is he's pushing the dialog toward issues the Dem party needs to put front and center. We need to stop letting Tea Party-ers define the questions we ask ourselves.
That said, Repubs are very every experienced red-baiters, and will go full throtle after Bernie's socialism and jewish heritage. Hilary, on the other hand, has survived attacks for years--she's going to be able to give as good as she gets.

Trump aide charged with misdemeanor battery vs. ex-Breitbart reporter
1:28 p.m. March 29 by Lulu Ramadan / Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

JUPITER UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow told The Palm Beach Post this morning that Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, was released with a notice to appear in court after he turned himself in this morning at the Jupiter Police Department.
Lewandowski is scheduled to appear May 4 in Palm Beach County Circuit Court.

.... ORIGINAL STORY: Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump campaign manager, was charged this morning with misdemeanor battery after allegations of forcefully grabbing a reporter at a Jupiter news conference, town police confirmed this morning.
Following a March 8 conference at Trump National Golf Club, Michelle Fields, a 28-year-old reporter formerly with the online Breitbart News Network, said she was grabbed on the arm by Lewandowski, 41, after she asked Trump a question about affirmative action.
Washington Post reporter Ben Terris wrote that he witnessed the battery.
Jupiter police later said they were looking into the incident after Fields filed a report, although investigators had not named Lewandowski.
Lewandowski turned himself in to Jupiter police just after 8 a.m., according to a police report.
Surveillance footage captured at Trump National, off Donald Ross Road, corroborates Fields’ claim, the arrest report says.
Fields, who Tweeted photos of bruises on her arm she said resulted from the battery, resigned Breitbart less than a week after the incident. She cited Breitbart’s refusal to stand behind her amid the allegations as her reason for leaving.
Lewandowski replied to Fields’ Tweet, writing: “You are totally delusional. I never touched you. As a matter of fact, I have never even met you.”
Ben Shapiro, former Breitbart editor-at-large, also resigned, claiming in a prepared statement that the conservative news outlet, seen largely as supportive of Trump’s presidential bid, “abandoned” Fields “in order to protect Trump’s bully campaign manager.”
Several other employees followed suit in the following weeks and resigned, according to multiple reports.

The right and the left are responding to the same issues in this country and want changes, I am sure her answers were designed to prevent alienation of the right. Alaska is a red state with 82% and so far 1 superdelegate for Bernie, Idaho is red with 78% and 2 superdelegates for Bernie. These percentages and advances towards delegates are from RED STATES, in many ways the red states are leading the way which is one reason why I am so fascinated by this whole process right now. I don't like Hillary. I am a Bernie supporter and will vote for him in my state's primary election the end of this month.
However, come November, I will be voting for the Democratic nominee, be it Bernie or Hillary.
To stay home and not support the Democrat would be like voting for Trump or Cruz. And I could never do that.

Look at Bristol Palin's instagram picture with Trig and Tripp. I used to be in the camp that Sarah is Trig's birth mother but now I'm having second thoughts because Bristol has been Trig's caregiver and the one who shows affection towards Trig. I think Bristol is Trig's birth mother and Sarah is tired of the Wild Ride charade.

I am thankful everyday that Bernie Sanders is running and giving voice to the causes I care about. For the first time in a long time, the conversation on the left is about issues the left actually cares deeply about. If his entry into this race does nothing more than to force Hillary to reexamine her positions and understand there are many people further left of her agenda, then this campaign has been a success. I will vote for whomever gets the nom, but I hope Hillary takes to heart what Bernie has been supporting that has captured the excitement and loyalty of his supporters.
Nothing to get riled up about, we all want the same things....

I Can't stand Susan Sarandon. I am a bleeding heart liberal and proud of it but she is tinfoil hat wearer. When they were having the turmoil in 2000 between Bush and Gore she said (I'm not kidding) My Mother says it isn't rocket science to vote like her mother was some kind of expert. She'd (Saranadon) voted for Nader.
Some of these Bernie bots are as crazy as the tea party. You should read the things that are so wrong about Hillary, like how she is against a women's right to choose. When you point out she was endorsed by Planned Parenthood they say she paid them off. They come up with absolutely insane Wrong information and refuse to even verify what they are saying. They are so misinformed and proud of it.

And yet Bernie hasn't spoken a word to support PP or a woman's right to chose. It almost makes me wish that Bernie gets in and all those young people lose the right to not only abortion, but to access birth control. I've lived before we had those rights and was part of the "revolution" to get those rights but Bernie and his supporters seem so used to those rights that they can't comprehend what is happening to women's rights or they just don't care.

He's already said that Planned Parenthood is part of the establishment.

To Bernie, everything else pales in comparison to economic disparity. He has tunnel vision. I'm sure he cares about reproductive rights, but he gets annoyed when anyone wants to talk about them. I guess he thinks that if we have more economic equality, sexism and racism will magically disappear.

Jane Sanders might become the first lady to a president who is giving away free college for votes.

Bernie can you tell us why Jane O'Meara Sanders was fired as president of Burlington College that has a student enrollment of 200? Don't say your wife resigned, the faculty, students and college trustees were upset at your wife and the college gave your wife $200,000 to resign. Who gets $200,000 to resign?

Bernie's "free stuff" will go nowhere and everyone knows that but the Bernie Bros.
As for his wife, it seems something really shady was covered up.

BTW What I am curious about is how did Bernie support his child when he was unemployed and not involved for all those yrs the child was growing up? Did the welfare system support his child because he was too lazy to work for 17 yrs?

    2. There is a difference between campaigning that you believe students should get free tuition and a promise to work towards that end and giving away tuition for free votes, Yuge difference. When there is a $200,000 severance package that kind of means there was some wrongdoing on the part of someone besides the receiver of the money.

Hillary Clinton maintains her word she will run a clean campaign against Democratic presidential candidates.

How come Bernie Sanders is starting to run negative adds against Hillary Clinton when he said he was going to run a clean campaign?

How come Trump runs a negative campaign against Hillary Clinton and not against Bernie Sanders?

    Makes you think hmmmm

Here let me offer a challenge, show me one difference between the decisions made by Neo Cons and those made by Hillary ? They are two peas in a pod .

      Raz is right.

The neocons fight for equal pay, women's health, reproductive rights, paid family leave, affordable health care, affordable child care, and gun control.

      Just like Clinton.

"By the end I had decided that I was simply done with Bernie Sanders"

Sooo.. If Bernie wins the nomination you're just going to take your ball and go home huh Gryph. How perfectly hypocritical of you. He would carry Alaska in the general by a wide margin even without your vote, whereas Hillary loses to Drumpf 3-1. Alaska could go blue... Yay.. Well except for Hillary and her pantsuit pansy ass supporters. Keep Alaska red for another 4 years Billary. Oh joy

Just goes to show , not all celebrities have the smarts ... and are pretty militant in thinking over one or two issues that matter to them . They dont see the big picture , or any picture for that matter , other than their own narrow thought process . These celebs wield power through the media , but clearly are not good ambassadors of inclusive unity thought processes.

Interestingly Sarandon is a part of the 1%.

I was a '60's war protester. I'm a socialist at heart, but I'm a pragmatist in the pocketbook.

When Bernie comes up with a foolproof plan to FUND all of pie in the sky ideas, I'm with him. Like raising taxes on the ultra rich and corporations who have been ripping the country off for decades, and lowering the taxes for the middle and lower economic levels.

Unfortunately Bernie would have to run all of it through congress. If you think Obama had a rough time doing that, wait for them to sandbag Sanders.

I like his ideas, but they are just ideas with no way to facilitate them. Sounds a lot like dRUMPf and his bluster.
