Things got a little heated at last night's Democratic debate.

Courtesy of Business Insider:

Univision debate moderator Jorge Ramos confronted Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Wednesday over her email scandal, directly asking her if she would drop out of the race for her party's nomination if she were indicted.

"If you get indicted, will you drop out?" he asked her.

The former secretary of state refused to answer the question.

"Oh, for goodness," she started when Ramos pressed her on the issue after she initially danced around it. "It's not going to happen. I'm not even answering that question."

Good response.

When this whole e-mail thing is finally put to rest I wonder what the next line of attack with be for the conservatives?

I'm betting on Bill Clinton's past dalliances with other women.

Here is more courtesy of the New York Times:

Both candidates came prepared for a slash-and-burn debate, fully briefed on their rivals’ records with attack lines at the ready. Mrs. Clinton came at Mr. Sanders with kitchen-sink-style charges from the left but only occasionally mentioned one of her core criticisms: that he makes pie-in-the-sky promises without any way to get them done.

Mr. Sanders, looking to capitalize on his win in Michigan, was ready to fight, denouncing her criticisms of his votes related to the auto bailout, insisting she was misrepresenting his record. He attacked her repeatedly over her speeches to Wall Street firms for large sums of money, even suggesting that she might be hiding something by not releasing the transcripts. Mr. Sanders is effective at wielding the political blade, which he reinforced by tartly saying, “Madame Secretary, I will match my record against yours any day of the week.”

I have to admit that I was completely surprised that there was a debate last night.

If one of you had not sent a comment to IM I would not have known about it until this morning.

As it is I saw none of it as it was happening, but have watched numerous clips from today.

For me I think one of the most powerful, and honest, lines from the debate was when Hillary said, " I am not a natural politician in case you haven't noticed, like my husband or President Obama. So I have a view that I just have to do the best I can, get the results I can, make a difference in people's lives, and hope that people see that I'm fighting for them and that I can improve conditions, economically and other ways, that will benefit them and their families."

It will not exactly fit on a bumper sticker, and makes a lousy campaign slogan, but it felt real to me.

I think originally it was supposed to be a Bernie-Trumpf debate, but Donny dropped out.

I thought Clinton's most genuine moment was the look of dismay on her face when Jorge Ramos disclosed his daughter worked for the Clinton campaign then dropped the email question. Overall it was one of the oddest debates I've ever seen.

The debate last night was so extremely biased against Secretary Clinton. She was asked about the emails, bengazi, her likeablity. If i hadn't known better i would have thought it was a Fox sponsored event.

I also find Hillary's acknowledgement that she isn't a natural politician powerful and honest. Campaigning isn't what she does best, but governing is different. I happen to think she will be brilliant at governing. I'm glad she's putting that difference out there, so voters might take that into consideration when deciding who to support.

On the other hand, you could call Trump a good campaigner, or at least a noisy and effective one. But he would be a disastrous president.

According to a political science professor from American University who was interviewed on MSNBC today:

Since the late 1890s, the presidency has never been won by the incumbent party whenever it's had a hotly contested primary.

So, if this election follows precedent, Bernie Sanders is a spoiler and the Democrats will lose the White House. Hopefully, it's not and Sanders' challenge has made Clinton a better candidate who will demolish the GOP opposition.

I tend to agree with you. I've thought about this long and hard and I'm of the opinion that we're screwed no matter who we vote for but we MUST vote. I'm really proud of Bernie that he tried and I plan on voting for him when our primary, here in Oregon, comes in May (so stupid; why even have one).

I thought Hillary had one of her best moments last night. There was a woman from Guatemala who was very emotional about her husband being deported, while she was still here in the U.S. with her 5 children. Bernie got the question first, misunderstood it, and went for the cheap applause by yelling something most people agree with (families shouldn't be separated),saying we should all be angry about someone else he knows who was in the military whose spouse was deported, etc. Hillary then told the woman how courageous she was for asking the question and gave her a thoughtful reply. I thought it contrasted their differences in a way I hadn't seen before. Bernie seems to be waiting to respond, rather than really listening.

Bernie Sanders isn't interested in immigration, he has no interest in anything going on anywhere else. He's all about trying to stage a political revolution, just like he says. His record of doing nothing in congress decade after decade should ring a loud bell but people aren't even listening to his actual words when he says he wants a political revolution.

There's a reason why all those Libertarian thugs are attracted to him. They want a revolution too. The work of government, of public service, is NOT what Bernie and his buddies are after.

Face it: Sanders is this year's Nader. Eloquent, committed - and too single-mindedly focused on corporate greed and trade protection to appeal to the broader electorate. I just hope that - unlike Nader - he accepts defeat graciously and drives his supporters to vote for Hillary. Otherwise a President Trump or Cruz becomes a far more likely possibility.

    2. @ 1:35 - I think you might want to read what The Washington Post just wrote today about Hillary Clinton's distortions:

"But it's striking that, as Clinton has doubled down on the attacks [on Sanders], she has with some regularity played pretty fast and loose with the facts.

"She'll take a vote Sanders has made during his 25 years in Congress and gloss over most, if not all, of the details about it. The result is a carefully worded insinuation or even outright accusation that Sanders has voted against his base on everything from immigration to the auto bailout to fossil fuels."

And just because I post this does not mean I am a troll. Don't be as closed-minded as the trolls you hate. The Facebook video does point out a certain inconsistency in her public statements.

At best, she changed her mind, at worst: she's a political animal that will wait to see which way the wind is blowing before committing. A statesman does not do this. Very few around these days, alas.

There is no one in either party who has the experience and knowledge of government that compares to Hillary Clinton. We learn from our experiences, our successes and our failures. Hillary is ready to be in the Oval Office and continue the great progress President Obama has made moving us away from Republican Recession when jobs were being lost by the hundreds of thousands every month. She has demonstrated her passion and zeal for women, children, seniors and working people so I hope Michigan and everyone else will support her.

I've loved Bernie for decades, but his nasty insinuations about HRC have turned me off to him for good.

Ask him where he thinks the auto bailout funds came from .. does he even know? Or is he too busy shouting all the time. Those funds came from TARP, which he indeed voted against.

He voted against the single biggest chance we had for immigration reform because he thought immigrants drove down US wages. It's on record. Now he claims that vote was for another reason.

Tell me, who is the untrustworthy one.

    Go Hillary!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous4:39 PM

Oh, Hillary's the untrustworthy one on this auto bailout foolishness. Sanders knows exactly where the auto bail out funds came from! But he also knows that hen the TARP bill was being considered, the Troubled Assets proposed to be Repurchased were assets of banks and financial institutions.

After the TARP bill passed, the auto bailout bill failed. Sanders voted for cloture, but it was stopped by the Republicans with a filibuster and was never voted on the floor.

George W. Bush deferred allocation of the TARP funds to January and the new Administration but recommended $13.4 B be given to GM and $4 B to Chrysler. Obama approved that.

So it is untrue that Sanders voted against the auto bailout. He voted against TARP when the funds in TARP were to bail out Wall Street.

This is not ancient history. It's easily fact-checked and the facts support that it's untrue. Other Democratic senators voted against TARP including Sen. Debbie Stabinow of Michigan. Do you think Stabinow would have voted against an auto bail out?

The people of Michigan saw right through that bullshit and I think the vote in Michigan reflects that Clinton's attempt at smearing Sanders failed in spades.

If you look at the actual number of votes, Hillary did not lose by much, about 1,500 votes.

That is not the certified count so difference could be a bit different.

There were a few takeaways for me with Hillary's answers last night, she differentiated herself from her husband and POTUS as the "politician" things, admitted it isn't her strong suit, and they treated each other with some modicum of respect and dignity.
The GOP "Debates"? Well, we all can just toss them in the vulgar trash heap and slam the lid.

You can fail to agree and still find common ground, unless your name's Obama or you have an "r" behind your name.

Too bad Bernie's supporters don't behave like he does. Too bad they usually resort to personal insults.

As if Hillary has any idea if she will be indicted or not. There is an ongoing FBI investigation. It is a legitimate question, and an important question considering the stakes.

I did not realize that the Clintons and Univision had any ties, but here it is:
