Brussels suffers terrorist attack.

Courtesy of the BBC:

At least 26 people have been killed and many seriously injured in terrorist attacks at Brussels international airport and a city metro station.

Twin blasts hit Zaventem airport at 07:00 GMT, killing 11 and injuring 81, Belgium's health minister said.

Another explosion struck Maelbeek metro station an hour later. Brussels transport officials say 15 people were killed and 55 injured, 10 seriously.

Belgium has now raised its terrorism threat to its highest level.

The attacks come four days after Salah Abdeslam, the main fugitive in the Paris attacks, was seized in Brussels.

Actually now I am hearing that the number of dead has now reached at least 31. And the number may grow as more information comes to light.

What a terrible thing to wake up to today.

And just another reminder of how important it is to choose a leader here in the US who understands the world as it is, as has a plan for how to deal with all of the challenges that we face moving forward.

Donald Trump for instance has the perfect solution to the problem, courtesy of Wonkette:

I would close up our borders until we figure out what is going on. Look at Brussels. Look at Paris. Look at so many cities that were great cities. Paris is almost as bad … Paris is no longer the beautiful City Of Lights. Paris has got a lot of problems … All you have to do is speak to the people who live there. […] We have to be smart in the United States. When people come in, we’re taking in people without real documentation, we don’t know where they’re coming from, we don’t know where they’re from, who they are. You look at it from any standpoint, they could be ISIS. They could be ISIS-related. And we just don’t learn. … Brussels is an amazing example. Brussels was an absolutely crime-free city, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And now you look at it, it’s a disaster. […]

Frankly, those countries better get smart fast, because they’re just disintegrating. I have friends who live in Brussels, they say the place is literally disintegrating.

In my opinion, this is just the beginning. It will get worse and worse because we are lax and we are foolish. … At this point, we cannot allow these people to come into the country. We are allowing thousands and thousands of people to come into our country, and we don’t even know where they come from and who they are. We have to be very careful. We’re not babies. We can’t do this anymore. We can’t have these attacks anymore. We can’t have World Trade Centers anymore and planes flying into the Pentagon.

Wow there really is no problem for which Donald Trump does not think that racism and xenophobia are the solution.

And let me remind everybody that the very existence of ISIS, or Daesh if you prefer, is the direct result of another narrow minded idiot who declared war on Muslims without good reason.

Gee I think he was a Republican as well. What a coincidence.

She sounds like Netanyahu”: Hillary Clinton goes extra hawkish in her biased, die-hard pro-Israel AIPAC speech
Clinton's speech was full of distortion, belligerence and uncritical support of Israel, totally ignoring its crimes

Hillary Clinton has always been hawkish about the Middle East, but she took her belligerence to a new level in her speech at the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Monday.

Much of the rhetoric of the Democratic presidential front-runner sounded indistinguishable from that of a neocon. Some viewers even compared her to hard-line right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The United States and Israel must be closer than ever, stronger than ever,” Clinton declared. “We must take our alliance to the next level,” she said, calling for “even more intense security and diplomatic cooperation” and demanding that the U.S. arm the Israeli military “with the most sophisticated defense technology.”

    1. Anonymous9:40 AM

Let the damn Israeli army arm themselves. We already give the country 6 billion American dollar annually, why is it our job to outfit their military, especially when it is American arms killing innocent Palestinians?

    2. Anonymous4:46 PM

OT Terrorists bombed, killed and injured people in Belgium and Brussels. Tune in tomorrow and it'll be yesterday's news, I promise.

  2. Anonymous6:33 AM

And wing nuts are gleeful that Trump somehow "called it," this terrorist act while we all welcomed terrorists in with open arms. This is as maddening as the same kind of people give Sarah Palin credit on foreseeing Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Category 5 nonsense.

    1. Anonymous8:36 AM

It's called pandering. He hasn't a clue. Are you going to require Muslims bear some kind of *mark so you can tell them apart? Like jews,Mormons,catholics..they come in all shapes and sizes. And,they can lie about their religion. Trump is encouraging the Americans to terrorize others that don't conform to his divisive nature. So what's the difference? Foreign terrorism, or Trump terrorism?

  3. Anonymous6:36 AM

That wasn't a plane that 'flew' into the Pentagon.

    1. Anonymous7:06 AM

      Got that right!

    2. Anonymous8:27 AM

Were you at the Pentagon that day?My daughter's former in laws were. She worked at the little food court, which was hit. She had a dental appointment that day so she wasn't there. Her husband is an attorney for the army. He had just walked out of his office when it hit. You can believe what you want. I rely on facts.

    3. Anonymous8:45 AM

Correction-otherwise the mother in law would have been there.

  4. Anonymous6:37 AM

On $arah fb page she will say it't President Obama fault for being in Cuba..3..2..1

Back in college I knew the funniest Muslim. He wasn't a hardliner, he was one of my favorite drinking buddies, and loved to hike. He was smart and extremely funny. We had loads of philosophical drinky conversations that lasted till dawn. He graduated and moved to Ottowa to become a dentist. I miss that guy! As neither one of us was truly religious, we had the space to get to know each other's views and be able to discuss without any form of argument. I have a feeling that anyone who ever knew my friend Muhommad back then, before it was popular to hate the muslims, have to admit to themselves that he was one cool muthah.
And that, friends, is what destroys stereotypes.

    1. Balzafiar7:40 AM

It's never too late to reignite that friendship. Give it a shot!

    2. So a Muslim has to drink alcohol to be "cool" in your eyes? How sad. And how stereotypical.

    3. Anonymous8:16 AM

Li, I shouldn't speak for 6:46, but "drinking buddies", especially in college, is just a phrase meaning someone to have fun times with- drinking or not. They never said a Muslim has to drink to be cool.

I do remember some of my college drinking buddies were cool only when drinking. Or was that when I was drinking..?

    4. Anonymous8:25 AM

Balzafiar echoed my immediate thoughts on 6:46am's post. Liz, I respectfully believe that you may have missed the point.

    5. I apologize if I have read into the comment what was not there. And, the OP could have said "buddies" and "philosophical conversations".

  6. Anonymous7:03 AM

And if Donald gets really pissed he can use nuclear. See WP transcript.

    1. Anonymous7:20 AM

Think about this before voting: Donald and L'il Kim of NK could be responsible for the end of life on this planet. In the end, terrorists will get what they believe they ultimately want.

My sad thoughts to all the victims of this latest insanity.

    2. Balzafiar7:41 AM

Mildred, I so wholeheartedly agree. I wish for the days when we could covertly just solve the Kim problem without fanfare.

    3. Anonymous7:56 AM

7:20 "terrorists will get what they believe they ultimately want." Like Jesus Freaks and Allah Freaks and Jehovah and Yahweh Freaks?
      End of Times?!

  7. Anonymous7:12 AM

I'm so sorry off topic, folks.....

Bristol is on MSN, the lead stories about Down Syndrome Day and someone "mocking" Trig in a comment on her Facebook page because Trig is wearing a Make America Great Again Trump hat. The commentator wrote something about Trig being a typical Trump supporter. And of course Bristol responds with her usual victim BS and "my brother has one more chromosome than you...."

    1. Anonymous7:31 AM

Do retards over age 18 vote? I mean Trig-type retards, not the GOP disabled.

    2. Anonymous7:33 AM

It's too bad someone had to make a nasty comment about Trig, but does Bristol really think any of us want an extra chromosome or think it's a good thing to have one? Would she have been happy if Tripp or Sailor had extra chromosomes? Would she consider herself "lucky?"

Trig has an excuse to be intellectually disabled. Bristol is just dumb.

    3. Balzafiar7:43 AM

7:12PM, you are NOT off-topic. Palins are on-topic anytime, anywhere.

    4. Anonymous8:19 AM

Putting a small disabled child (who is not in control of his life and can't even vote yet) in a political situation by wearing a Trump hat, is just plain mean. Trump himself mocked the disabled reporter. What would Trump say about Trig?

The nasty Palin's use that poor kid, and it will never stop. They are just horrible people. Karma is coming for them.

    5. Anonymous8:53 AM

I am uncomfortable with palin using photos of her children for profit including maintaining her brand.

    6. Anonymous9:23 AM

8:53 - yes, but that's all they have going for them, like the Duggars. They have no talents, are not smart, and are not an attractive family. That is their brand, and they monetize it via social media and reality shows. Currently, it's pretty clear that Brist. is pitching a new show. Her manager is listed on her social media.

  8. Anonymous7:43 AM

Terrorists. They cannot be rehabilitated. Hate consumes them.

That said, there IS a reason for Gitmo to exist - it should be run by a consortium of nations, and house terrorists with actual evidence that they committed the crime. If they are eventually tried, it should be by the world court.

The assholes don't fear death, they welcome it. However eternal incarceration is their worst fear.

    1. One of my client's told me this right after 9/11 happened. Her parents lived in Florida in a condo. When visiting them, she got on the elevator with a floor neighbor -- Mohammed Atta. She said, "Out of the blue, he looked at me and said, 'You people love Pepsi. We love death.'" Not long after, he flew a plane into the World Trade Centre.

He had convinced himself, I guess, that he did not fear death and wanted to take down as many of the infidels with him. Her parents had no idea who was living next door to them. He was a quiet man, they said.

  9. Anonymous7:45 AM

What a way to start the day! :( I am very, very sorry for the people over there. Europe will become more and more of a police state, and they also will become more and more intolerant of Middle Eastern imigrants. ThEse attacks will make it even worse now for the Syrian refugees swamping Europe...

So, then according to tRump, we will have no problems if we hermetically seal our borders, correct? We will have no Oklahoma City massscre, will have no Sandy Hooks massacre, nothing like that.
I guess, those massacres we had, they were just in our imagination, because, of course, we have no ISIS/DAESH here.

  10. Anonymous7:52 AM

I think trump and the palin's contrive situations to create perceptions, particularly at the end of the week to get the most press.

So Trump uses the Belgium bombing to shit on the city at its low point and further attack Muslims. He is a scary man.

    1. Anonymous8:25 AM

dRumpf SHITS on everything and everybody. That is his THING!

  11. Anonymous7:58 AM

Shocking. My sister and husband fly in and out of Brussels because their jobs.Thank God they aren't overseas right now.

  12. Anonymous8:08 AM

It's sickening. Because you know what the first thing Trump thought when he heard about these terrible attacks? "This will be great help for my campaign"

    You know he thought that.

    1. Yes and expect there to be an attack on American soil just before the next election night. They did it before to scare Americans into voting the party of safety (Repubs), they will do it again.

  13. None of our past 5 Presidents has understood how the world works and what it takes for peace. But that's not what they really want. They have all supported the military industrial complex and weapons systems producers. War is good for business.

President Obama has let this thing grow and increased hatred for the west and America in particular with his ramping up of the assassination by drone program. And what has he done to force Israel to treat Palestinians like human beings? No, he's not off the hook for this and neither is his ex Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They are part and parcel of what's going on in the world today.

    1. Anonymous9:04 AM

I don't disagree that things needs to change, but I don't think any President who goes against the military industrial complex will EVER be elected. It's naive to believe otherwise. So the question is: what can we, as citizens, do to ease terrorism? I would urge you all to be kind to any Muslims in your communities, as they are most likely feeling ostracized and very frightened.

One thing I like about HRC is that her longtime assistant Huma is Muslim; I'm glad that HRC will not ever resort to Muslim bashing, unlike Trump and Cruz.

    2. Anonymous4:13 PM

lol 9:04, what do we as citizens do? How about not vote them into office!?

  14. Anonymous8:15 AM

We want a president that kicks someone when they are down? Trump has a history of treating everyone like that and he gets pleasure from it. He and palin have no friends and use family members for their own purpose. What if Ivanka was, God forbid, ugly or not underweight. Anyway, palin has met her match with trump and lost in areas important to both of them, overt sexuality.

  15. Anonymous8:17 AM

  16. Anonymous8:19 AM

Yes,and Trig is definitely the intellectual of the family. I'll give you that, barstool. By the way, what was his true diagnosis at birth? There's more to that story.....smooches,ya dumb bitch.

    1. Anonymous9:50 AM

It amazes no end to hear how all of these GOP presidential wannabes are going to launch an "all out war" on ISIL. Where will they invade? What's the capital city of ISIL? Where, exactly, is it located? A reporter should ask Ted Cruz and his fellow nincompoops these questions, among many others.

  18. Anonymous10:43 AM

Gryphen, I am no Bush fan. I couldn't stand him. But he did not declare war on Muslims. He did declare war on the wrong country and on Saddam Hussein. And the war against "al quaeda" in Afghanistan wasn't for " no good reason" It was retaliation for 9-11. Yes the whole thing was a huge mistake that made things worse. But Bush went out of his way to say it wan't against Islam, but against jihadists. He called Islam a "religion of peace" which pissed off a lot of war hawks.
There is just so much wrong with your last statement. It surprises me. The history of the middle east and the problems go farther back than Bush, And yes he was an idiot, But declaring war on all Muslims is not what he did at all. He was actually too close to the Saudi royal family. And all the 9-11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, At least please get your facts right instead of making historically innacurate, partisan and inflammatory statements. How are we different from the far right if we demonize them the same way they do us and spread lies/change history. How will things ever change?

    1. Trust me I know exactly what happened, I was protesting against it as it was happening.

By some accounts the Iraq killed potentially a million Muslims, how many of those do you really think were "jihadists?" And that is not even taking into consideration the number killed in Afghanistan.

It does not matter what Bush called Islam in a speech, what matters to the people who are now attacking us is that he killed their fellow Muslims by the truckload, and locked up hundreds more in Gitmo, and of course tortured many others for the sin of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as well.

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and many other criminals started this fire, and we are still watching it consume innocent people today.

      Those are the facts.

    2. Anonymous12:32 PM

You are kidding yourself dude. Extremist muslims had long declared war against the US and the western world long before Bush was president. You are juvinile in your thoughts, but no doubt it helps you sleep at night. As you probably conveniently dismiss, the first attack against the world trade center was during the Clinton years. But of course attacks and planning on US soils and US interests, and the western world go back way further than that, obviously. What is going on with the muslim religion was unevitable as the world grew smaller. Don't kid yourself, it is not ending any time soon. And Obama solved nothing in this regard, and several countries got worse as Obama let crap play out. The west, not just the US, is in a long long war against this problem. May as well wake up and smell the coffee.

Trump is an idiot, close our borders, the terrorists are already in the USA. Hasn't he heard of sleeper cells.

They could be working in Trump Towers right this very minute since he is big on hiring illegal aliens.

The Republicans-their solution to everything is fear and "round them up".

Another highly-respected organization has warned the world about the global threat of a Trump victory in November.........

  23. Anita Winecooler5:08 PM

The gop has it's panties in a wad over Obama's staying in Cuba taking in a ballgame. McCane was apoplectic that he decided to stay. Then BANG

Obama has a speech that said, paraphrasing, the goal of terrorists is to disrupt people's lives, my going back would be used as propaganda that it's working, I'm being kept abreast of the situation, and if I feel my presence in Washington is needed for anything, I'll evaluate the situation.
Then he stood and called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims and their families.
When they cut back, McCain had taken off his mic and left the building.
Of course, my sympathies to those affected by this act of terrorism. I can't imagine what they're going through, words just fail.
