Brussels suffers terrorist attack.

Courtesy of the BBC:

At least 26 people have been killed and many seriously injured in terrorist attacks at Brussels international airport and a city metro station.

Twin blasts hit Zaventem airport at 07:00 GMT, killing 11 and injuring 81, Belgium's health minister said.

Another explosion struck Maelbeek metro station an hour later. Brussels transport officials say 15 people were killed and 55 injured, 10 seriously.

Belgium has now raised its terrorism threat to its highest level.

The attacks come four days after Salah Abdeslam, the main fugitive in the Paris attacks, was seized in Brussels.

Actually now I am hearing that the number of dead has now reached at least 31. And the number may grow as more information comes to light.

What a terrible thing to wake up to today.

And just another reminder of how important it is to choose a leader here in the US who understands the world as it is, as has a plan for how to deal with all of the challenges that we face moving forward.

Donald Trump for instance has the perfect solution to the problem, courtesy of Wonkette:

I would close up our borders until we figure out what is going on. Look at Brussels. Look at Paris. Look at so many cities that were great cities. Paris is almost as bad … Paris is no longer the beautiful City Of Lights. Paris has got a lot of problems … All you have to do is speak to the people who live there. […] We have to be smart in the United States. When people come in, we’re taking in people without real documentation, we don’t know where they’re coming from, we don’t know where they’re from, who they are. You look at it from any standpoint, they could be ISIS. They could be ISIS-related. And we just don’t learn. … Brussels is an amazing example. Brussels was an absolutely crime-free city, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And now you look at it, it’s a disaster. […]

Frankly, those countries better get smart fast, because they’re just disintegrating. I have friends who live in Brussels, they say the place is literally disintegrating.

In my opinion, this is just the beginning. It will get worse and worse because we are lax and we are foolish. … At this point, we cannot allow these people to come into the country. We are allowing thousands and thousands of people to come into our country, and we don’t even know where they come from and who they are. We have to be very careful. We’re not babies. We can’t do this anymore. We can’t have these attacks anymore. We can’t have World Trade Centers anymore and planes flying into the Pentagon.

Wow there really is no problem for which Donald Trump does not think that racism and xenophobia are the solution.

And let me remind everybody that the very existence of ISIS, or Daesh if you prefer, is the direct result of another narrow minded idiot who declared war on Muslims without good reason.

Gee I think he was a Republican as well. What a coincidence.

She sounds like Netanyahu”: Hillary Clinton goes extra hawkish in her biased, die-hard pro-Israel AIPAC speech
Clinton's speech was full of distortion, belligerence and uncritical support of Israel, totally ignoring its crimes

Hillary Clinton has always been hawkish about the Middle East, but she took her belligerence to a new level in her speech at the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Monday.

Much of the rhetoric of the Democratic presidential front-runner sounded indistinguishable from that of a neocon. Some viewers even compared her to hard-line right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The United States and Israel must be closer than ever, stronger than ever,” Clinton declared. “We must take our alliance to the next level,” she said, calling for “even more intense security and diplomatic cooperation” and demanding that the U.S. arm the Israeli military “with the most sophisticated defense technology.”

Let the damn Israeli army arm themselves. We already give the country 6 billion American dollar annually, why is it our job to outfit their military, especially when it is American arms killing innocent Palestinians?

And wing nuts are gleeful that Trump somehow "called it," this terrorist act while we all welcomed terrorists in with open arms. This is as maddening as the same kind of people give Sarah Palin credit on foreseeing Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Category 5 nonsense.

It's called pandering. He hasn't a clue. Are you going to require Muslims bear some kind of *mark so you can tell them apart? Like jews,Mormons,catholics..they come in all shapes and sizes. And,they can lie about their religion. Trump is encouraging the Americans to terrorize others that don't conform to his divisive nature. So what's the difference? Foreign terrorism, or Trump terrorism?

Back in college I knew the funniest Muslim. He wasn't a hardliner, he was one of my favorite drinking buddies, and loved to hike. He was smart and extremely funny. We had loads of philosophical drinky conversations that lasted till dawn. He graduated and moved to Ottowa to become a dentist. I miss that guy! As neither one of us was truly religious, we had the space to get to know each other's views and be able to discuss without any form of argument. I have a feeling that anyone who ever knew my friend Muhommad back then, before it was popular to hate the muslims, have to admit to themselves that he was one cool muthah.
And that, friends, is what destroys stereotypes.

Li, I shouldn't speak for 6:46, but "drinking buddies", especially in college, is just a phrase meaning someone to have fun times with- drinking or not. They never said a Muslim has to drink to be cool.

I do remember some of my college drinking buddies were cool only when drinking. Or was that when I was drinking..?

That said, there IS a reason for Gitmo to exist - it should be run by a consortium of nations, and house terrorists with actual evidence that they committed the crime. If they are eventually tried, it should be by the world court.

    1. One of my client's told me this right after 9/11 happened. Her parents lived in Florida in a condo. When visiting them, she got on the elevator with a floor neighbor -- Mohammed Atta. She said, "Out of the blue, he looked at me and said, 'You people love Pepsi. We love death.'" Not long after, he flew a plane into the World Trade Centre.

He had convinced himself, I guess, that he did not fear death and wanted to take down as many of the infidels with him. Her parents had no idea who was living next door to them. He was a quiet man, they said.

Europe will become more and more of a police state, and they also will become more and more intolerant of Middle Eastern imigrants. ThEse attacks will make it even worse now for the Syrian refugees swamping Europe...

So, then according to tRump, we will have no problems if we hermetically seal our borders, correct? We will have no Oklahoma City massscre, will have no Sandy Hooks massacre, nothing like that.
I guess, those massacres we had, they were just in our imagination, because, of course, we have no ISIS/DAESH here.

President Obama has let this thing grow and increased hatred for the west and America in particular with his ramping up of the assassination by drone program. And what has he done to force Israel to treat Palestinians like human beings? No, he's not off the hook for this and neither is his ex Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They are part and parcel of what's going on in the world today.

I don't disagree that things needs to change, but I don't think any President who goes against the military industrial complex will EVER be elected. It's naive to believe otherwise. So the question is: what can we, as citizens, do to ease terrorism? I would urge you all to be kind to any Muslims in your communities, as they are most likely feeling ostracized and very frightened.

One thing I like about HRC is that her longtime assistant Huma is Muslim; I'm glad that HRC will not ever resort to Muslim bashing, unlike Trump and Cruz.

Gryphen, I am no Bush fan. I couldn't stand him. But he did not declare war on Muslims. He did declare war on the wrong country and on Saddam Hussein. And the war against "al quaeda" in Afghanistan wasn't for " no good reason" It was retaliation for 9-11. Yes the whole thing was a huge mistake that made things worse. But Bush went out of his way to say it wan't against Islam, but against jihadists. He called Islam a "religion of peace" which pissed off a lot of war hawks.
There is just so much wrong with your last statement. It surprises me. The history of the middle east and the problems go farther back than Bush, And yes he was an idiot, But declaring war on all Muslims is not what he did at all. He was actually too close to the Saudi royal family. And all the 9-11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, At least please get your facts right instead of making historically innacurate, partisan and inflammatory statements. How are we different from the far right if we demonize them the same way they do us and spread lies/change history. How will things ever change?

    1. Trust me I know exactly what happened, I was protesting against it as it was happening.

By some accounts the Iraq killed potentially a million Muslims, how many of those do you really think were "jihadists?" And that is not even taking into consideration the number killed in Afghanistan.

It does not matter what Bush called Islam in a speech, what matters to the people who are now attacking us is that he killed their fellow Muslims by the truckload, and locked up hundreds more in Gitmo, and of course tortured many others for the sin of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as well.

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and many other criminals started this fire, and we are still watching it consume innocent people today.

      Those are the facts.

You are kidding yourself dude. Extremist muslims had long declared war against the US and the western world long before Bush was president. You are juvinile in your thoughts, but no doubt it helps you sleep at night. As you probably conveniently dismiss, the first attack against the world trade center was during the Clinton years. But of course attacks and planning on US soils and US interests, and the western world go back way further than that, obviously. What is going on with the muslim religion was unevitable as the world grew smaller. Don't kid yourself, it is not ending any time soon. And Obama solved nothing in this regard, and several countries got worse as Obama let crap play out. The west, not just the US, is in a long long war against this problem. May as well wake up and smell the coffee.

Obama has a speech that said, paraphrasing, the goal of terrorists is to disrupt people's lives, my going back would be used as propaganda that it's working, I'm being kept abreast of the situation, and if I feel my presence in Washington is needed for anything, I'll evaluate the situation.
Then he stood and called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims and their families.
When they cut back, McCain had taken off his mic and left the building.
Of course, my sympathies to those affected by this act of terrorism. I can't imagine what they're going through, words just fail.
