Hillary Clinton's response to Bernie Sanders saying she is unqualified to be President.

Okay I thought that was fair and non-confrontational, unlike Sanders' response.

Speaking of Sanders' response this is how he responded to Charlie Rose on this topic yesterday:

Bernie Sanders is refusing to back down from his claim that Hillary Clinton is not "qualified" to be president, though he told CBS host Charlie Rose on Thursday that he only attacked her because she attacked him first.

“Do you believe Secretary Clinton is unqualified to be president?” Rose asked the Vermont senator on CBS Evening News on Thursday.

“Well, does Secretary Clinton believe that I am unqualified to be president?” Sanders shot back.

Is anybody else getting a distinct Donald Trump vibe here?

By the end of the interview Sanders had grudgingly acknowledged that Hillary Clinton would be better than any of the choices on the Republican side.

Here is what Josh Marshall of TPM has to say about all of this:

All candidates, by definition, say that they're more qualified than their opponent. Various things Clinton said can be reasonably interpreted as questioning whether Sanders is up to the job of the presidency. But it is an entirely different matter when an opponent, in his own voice, says flatly his challenger is "unqualified" to serve as President of the country. That's something that cannot be unsaid. If Clinton is the nominee, it will undoubtedly be a staples of GOP stump speeches in the Fall. These are simple realities of political campaigns. Primaries that drag on get intense. Especially in the venomous and kinetic New York media environment. The Clinton operation has plenty of sharp elbows themselves. But it is incumbent on both candidates to fight hard and yet not say things that can't be unsaid - not always as easy thing to manage. Because it matters a lot on various fronts, what the candidate him or herself says, says explicitly.

Hopefully from this point forward both the Sanders' camp and the Clinton camp will keep in mind that either one of them are far, far, far better than anyone being offered on the GOP side, and stop providing ammunition that will be used against the ultimate Democratic nominee in the general election.

Honestly this is much ado about nothing, mostly from the press and bloggers I can only assume trying to stir up interest. Everyone is acting like they have never seen a political primary before with the he said she said business. Nothing that goes back and forth right now is going to make a spit of difference in the general. Frankly it is good to see a little fire in this whole thing.

Yes, the Hillary semantics game. Absolutely.

Face it, the Hillary campaign, Hillary, and her supporters all were pretending to play nice with the old guy from Vermont. The hopeful anticipation was that he would bow out with a pat on the back for his valiant effort etc... so that you could all go forward with the predetermined candidate by the DNC. The DNC and Hillary have been planning, plotting, and playing dirty games before this primary even started to heavily tilt the nomination for Hillary Inc. They simply can't have it any other way. It is dirty and everyone knows it.

Now Hillary is finding herself floundering once again. The reactionary tone of her campaign is showing just how weak of a candidate she really still is. She simply is uninspiring and lacks any leadership qualities.

    5. But Bernie did say “ ... she [Hillary Clinton] has been saying lately that she thinks that I am, quote-unquote, 'not qualified' to be president. Well, let me, let me just say in response to Secretary Clinton: I don't believe that she is qualified, if she is, through her SUPER PAC ... “.

He started it off saying he had been accused of not being qualified TO BE PRESIDENT. He is running for president, and he was referencing a person who was also currently running for president. So when he uses the word 'qualified' in the sentences immediately following, he does not have to say 'for president' again. It is assumed, and correctly assumed. Semantics? Perhaps. But it is in fact what he meant and I don't think he's even trying to deny it. The situation - and the semantics - of the Hillary quotes were not nearly the same, not by a long shot.

      You know, truth matters:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (CO-HOST): Late last night, Clinton's press secretary Brian Fallon responded to [Sanders'] remarks on Twitter saying quote "Hillary Clinton did not say Bernie Sanders was 'not qualified.' But he has now - absurdly - said it about her. This is a new low." He added "Bernie Sanders, take back your words about Hillary Clinton." Sanders did no such thing. His campaign released a statement that began quote "Responding to Hillary Clinton's attempt to portray him as unqualified for the White House, Senator Sanders linked her to a trade pact exploited by wealthy individuals and profitable corporations to avoid paying taxes." And then went on to spell out the rest of Senator Sanders, the senator's quotes from Philadelphia. That statement linked readers to a Washington Post article with the headline "Clinton questions whether Sanders is qualified to be president," which cited Secretary Clinton's remarks on Morning Joe. Both candidates have news conferences scheduled for 9:00 this morning right after Morning Joe. I feel like I'm in trouble. And Bernie Sanders will join us on set in New York tomorrow morning.

JOE SCARBOROUGH (CO-HOST): OK so Mike Barnicle, you were there with us. I tried to get Hillary Clinton four times -- three or four times to say that Bernie Sanders was unqualified to be president of the United States and just like my interview with Rick Santorum, you know, I start asking a question, I keep going until I get an answer or give up. And after three or four attempts with Secretary Clinton I gave up because she was not going to say the words "He is unqualified to be president of the United States." Was that your takeaway from the interview as well or am I missing something?

MIKE BARNICLE: No, she clearly did not say that Bernie Sanders was not qualified to be president and under Senator Sanders' logic in his comeback, is John Kerry qualified to be secretary of state? Because he, too, voted for many of the things that Hillary Clinton has cited in Senator Sanders' indictment. This is going to be a 12-day tension convention here in New York state between Senator Sanders and Secretary Clinton."

    7. Anonymous11:27 AM

Your candidate should try practicing it too. If Hillary is the nominee, his words will be playing on FOX News non-stop.

"While I’m sure many of his supporters will disagree, I think Bernie Sanders might have just crossed a line from which he can’t return. Now I get that this far into a primary election, everyone is sick of everyone. The candidates are tired, grumpy, testy and their patience is sometimes pretty thin. So, while it was a nice idea for Sanders to say he was going to run an “issue-focused” campaign, I always knew that at some point this race was going to turn negative."

One assumes, or certainly hopes, that Bernie will back down and cool down in time, facing a choice between HRC and whoever the last clown standing turns out to be. And that his supporters will follow suit. Given time, it might occur to them that there are reasons to be excited over not only HRC's record, but also the prospect of a first female President in 240 years. (After Obama was elected, none other than George Will was heard to say on TV, this is a historic day.)
No question, though, that Bernie ends up on the losing side of this battle. His campaign has my email address; I made one modest donation early on. They haven't been too awful about spamming me since then, but just this morning I got email, donations are off, can we count on you to pitch in?

Both are very qualified and this is all just distraction, brought on by a slight bit of desperation on Clinton, since Sanders seems to be gaining momentum, instead of falling by the wayside. Hillary doesn't want to lose another presidential primary.

      THIS>
President Obama, who has sought to stay out his party’s nominating contest, weighed in Thursday though a spokesman. Traveling with Obama on Air Force One, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Obama believes that Clinton “comes to the race with more experience than any non-vice president” in recent campaign history. Schultz emphasized that Obama feels “fortunate” that Clinton, whom he defeated in a sometimes nasty battle for the 2008 nomination, served as his secretary of state."

“Sanders made a strategic mistake by going down this road, because it’s off-brand. And you can convince voters of lots of things, but you can’t convince them Hillary Clinton is unqualified to be president,” Pfeiffer said.

As the media have fired their blunderbusses at Donald Trump, trying to take down his candidacy — even as they benefit from the attention he brings them — you may have missed the whacks they’ve been taking at Clinton. She has been the media’s national piñata for so long, and the criticisms of her are so familiar by now, they are embedded in our consciousness as presumptions of guilt.

Of course, the basic narrative is that she did this to herself because she is a bundle of character flaws. She is duplicitous and untrustworthy. She lies. She is a pawn of the rich and powerful. She feels entitled to do anything she damn pleases. That pretty much sums up the media take on Hillary, and that take is virtually unanimous, so much a given that practically no one in the media has bothered to give it a second thought. This isn’t the “sorta know” journalism I referenced last week. This is “we-all-know” journalism.

On or about March 31, Marcel Lehel Lazar was extradited 3,700 miles to Alexandria, VA from a prison in Arad, Romania, where he has been serving a seven-year sentence for hacking crimes committed in his native country. His targets in Romania were prominent government officials and political figures whom he often taunted under the name of Micul Fum or “Little Smoke.”

One of the notches on his cyber-crime belt was allegedly accessing the email account of Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, one of Clinton’s most prolific advice-givers when she was secretary of state. It was through that hack that Clinton's use of a personal account -- clintonemail.com -- first came to light.

Bernie Sanders is far from the slickest presidential candidate, but he is clearly the most effective television advertiser in the 2016 race. Sanders’ campaign is responsible for the three most effective presidential campaign ads that have aired this year, and six of the 10 most effective, research conducted by the advertising measurement firm Ace Metrix indicates.

  25. I am not going to focus on the semantics, recordings, connotation, or subtleties of anything either Sanders or Clinton said in the context of two people under ferocious pressure and stress and a media determined to gin up a big clickbaity revenue-enhancing controversy. Yes, we have a right to expect a presidential candidate to bear up under pressure, but for heaven's sake, they are not super-human.

I will keep studying both of them in regard to their policy positions, their plans for enacting those positions, and the likelihood that their policies can be implemented before making up my mind which one would make the best president.

And then I will vote for whichever one of them gets the nomination because that person will be light years better than any republican Oh, and SCOTUS appointments.

All of it comes down to this: Democrats gain the more likely it is that Trump becomes the nominee. If he doesn't become the nominee, Democrats gain by every additional increment of acrimony, division and chaos involved in denying him the nomination. As a possible additional benefit, the more the battle for dark delegates heats up and becomes the center of news, that should further lock the convention in to choosing either Trump or Cruz. So if not Trump, then Cruz. Also good for Democrats. Manafort's addition to the campaign seems to move the ball forward on both (or perhaps two-and-a-half) fronts. These guys are street fighters. They won't give up easily or go away quietly.

After having been out of town for a week, and therefore only able to read IM and not comment, I feel I must have my say.

Bernie Sanders less mature and more like an occupant of a single person Klown Kar every day. First of all, his interview with the NYDaily News during which he sounded about as inept policy-wise as any GOP candidate. I think he is very angry that what he said during the interview was criticized by many commentators.

And then there's the accusation, by his spokesperson, that Hillary Clinton has too much "ambition" and that her ambition will "destroy the Democratic Party." First of all, Sanders was hiding behind someone else making the overtly sexist remark. Has anyone ever accused a male presidential candidate of having too much ambition? Of course not. It's absurd; anyone seriously running for the office has to be ambitious.

Hillary Clinton proved herself by her years in the Senate, where she was a dependable member of the Democratic Party - something Bernie Sanders has obviously never been. And she served the country extremely well as Secretary of State. And the statement that Hillary Clinton's "ambition" would destroy the Democratic Party truly adds to the lunacy of what purports to be the Sanders' campaign. These words came from someone who works for the non-Democrat running as a Democrat, the guy who won't even acknowledge other Democrats running for office in his speeches and who is simultaneously on the ballot in his home state as an "Independent" for another term as senator. Are we to believe that Bernie Sanders cares one whit for the Democratic Party?

I feel really sad that he has come so unglued. His responses to the questions by the NY Daily News were so pathetic. He is just plain ill-informed about most issues. And, after 20 years in Congress, that should not be so. Yet, if he gets the Democratic nomination I'll have to vote for him because the GOP alternative is so horrifying.

Till this happened, I was proud of how both candidates have run their campaigns, I'm for Hillary, but will vote Sanders if he is our nominee. In this matchup, Hillary came out ahead. Bernie sounds like his ego's bruised and needs to lash out, you know, like Donald Trump and his "All I want is to be treated fairly". As powerful as the internet has become as a forum for discussion I've never seen anyone commenting on a blog or posting on facebook or twitter change anyone else's mind about the candidate they support. It just doesn't happen no matter how many links are provided to back up their argument.

Keep up the game though. The republican primary is fucked up beyong all recognition and nothing makes them happier than the thought that they can make the democrat primary as fucked up as their own. Resorting to name-calling, i.e. BernieBro or HillaryHo is one of their oldest tricks, right out of the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove playbooks.

Keep it up and accomplish their goal for them, setting democrat against democrat. Reducing the turnout is the only proven way they can win. All this "Oh I'll never vote for him/her now" is exactly their goal and it's slightly entertaining to see how easy it is to lead sheep to the slaughter. Only slightly.

On almost every Palin post eventually someone will accuse someone else who has left a comment of being Sarah, Bristol, or one of their minions. If that's in fact the truth then why doesn't it occur to anyone that they do the same thing on posts about Hillary and Bernie just to stir up the shit?
