Bernie Sanders doubles down on his contention that there will be a contested convention.

Oh, that's more than a little upsetting.

And it is not only a waste of time but also doomed to fail.

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

"It is virtually impossible for Secretary Clinton to reach the majority of convention delegates by June 14 with pledged delegates alone," he said. "She will need superdelegates to take her over the top at the convention in Philadelphia. In other words, the convention will be a contested contest."

That's true — mostly because, unlike in 2008, Sanders will contest it. Eight years ago, Clinton conceded the race before the convention, recognizing that trying to fight her way to victory on the convention floor was likely to fail, despite her having a slight lead in the popular vote. But Clinton realized the damage that could be done to the party — and perhaps herself — so she didn't.

Sanders doesn't share the former sentiment, as he has made clear. He was an independent until he decided to run for president, and his goal during his campaign has been to upend the system, into which a convention floor fight fits neatly.

But that doesn't mean he has any real shot at winning.

The Post then goes on to lay out what should now be an obvious argument for why Sanders' plans to wrest the nomination is a non-starter.

However, as laid out above, by going to this extreme Sanders IS potentially doing great harm to the Democratic party. But since he is not actually a Democrat he of course feels no sense of loyalty to protect and preserve America's best hope at containing the increasingly anti-woman, racist, homophobic, anti-science, and hawkish Republican party.

And not only does Sanders put the Democratic party in jeopardy, he also places his own legacy in jeopardy.

Courtesy of The New York Times:

He dismissed Clinton victories driven by black voters as products of the conservative Deep South; he suggested that his defeat in New York was unfair because it was a closed primary (you can argue this case either way, but requiring that you identity as a Democrat to choose the Democratic nominee is hardly voter suppression — arguably caucuses are much further from a democratic process); then, with the big loss in the mid-Atlantic primaries,he has turned to a sort of fact-free complaint that any process under which Bernie Sanders loses is ipso facto unfair, and superdelegates should choose him despite a 3 million vote deficit.

At this point it’s as if Sanders is determined to validate everything liberal skeptics have been saying all along about his unwillingness to face reality — and all of it for, maybe, a few weeks of additional fundraising, at the expense of any future credibility and goodwill. Isn’t there anyone who can tell him to stop before it’s too late?

Good question. Is there?

By the way if I were Sanders I would not put all of my eggs in that California basket.

I hope all the Dems come home, if you will, and Hillary mops the floor with Sanders in the remaining primaries.

Now is the time for unity.

Bernie's technically right: a convention that requires the votes of the superdelegates to determine the outcome, that is supedelegate votes are needed for one candidate to get to 2,382, is by definition a brokered or contested convention.

Obama calls Sanders "The fresh new face of the Democratic Party". Biden said he likes Sanders' big ideas. Now I'm not sure Clinton herself will be indicted, but some time before the convention I believe we will learn that the hacker who hacked Clinton's buddy Sidney Blumenthal's email account, Guccifer, hacked Clinton's server, too. He was brought to the US 2 weeks ago for interrogation. Indictment or not, if it's learned that the server was hacked, Clinton's fucked. There Is A Hole In Bernie Sanders’ Strategy For Winning The Nomination

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ revamped plan for winning the Democratic presidential nomination suffers from an inconsistency that could complicate the case he makes to party insiders and allied groups.

The Vermont independent laid out the admittedly difficult path he plans to follow for the remainder of the primary season in a National Press Club address on Sunday. In many ways, it was a more forceful iteration of a proposal his campaign had offered several weeks ago: By doing well in upcoming primaries, he will close the gap in pledged delegates with Hillary Clinton, so much so that neither of them will have the necessary numbers to win the nomination outright without the help of the so-called superdelegates. At that point, Sanders will encourage those superdelegates — party insiders who also have a say in who becomes the nominee — to back him on the basis that he would be the stronger candidate in the fall election.

On Sunday, Sanders was more explicit about his view of the role that superdelegates need to play, arguing that those from states in which he had already beaten Clinton handedly had an obligation to switch their support to him now.

“If I win a state with 70 percent of the votes, you know what? I think I’m entitled to those superdelegates,” he said.

The word “entitled” is what complicates Sanders’ case.

Anonymous @6:24, Hillary also conceded the race the day after the last primary when Obama's super delegates put him over the top. They were extremely close in vote totals. As of today, Hillary is leading Bernie by almost 300 PD's. Kornacki also showed Weaver that the idea that Bernie swings all the SD's in the states he's won to him will not put him ahead of Hillary. She is almost 600 PD's & SD's ahead of him as of this writing. Bernie doesn't have a chance in hell of beating her! Polls are meaningless at this point no matter what Bernie says. How ironic that he's depending on polls to back him up when at the time of the NY primary, he called them worthless, saying he would win NY. #TheBernIsFinished

You people that are so hateful towards Bernie and his wife are why we are going to have a President Trump. Can't wait! Won't impact my life in any way, shape or form but damn you hateful Bernie Bashers are going to find that life is perhaps a little different for you under Trump, and I will be laughing my ass off at you hateful bunch of miscreants.

This is nonsense. Clinton was doing and saying the same things in 2008. You're just setting up to scapegoat Sanders when Clinton loses to Trump.

No. She & Obama had a much tighter race -- only 100 delegates apart in 2098 & she won the popular vote by some metrics. Bernie has never come close in any metric in 2016. Even Rachel said he lost tonight on MSNBC!

I don't blame him, its the DNC's allowing him to run as a Democrat in the first place, when it's clear he couldn't give a damn about the party nor the voters. He SHOULD have run as an independent if all he wants is to see a revolution.
I had a shred of respect for what he was trying to do early on, but these past few months, that's eroded to that little shell thing in popcorn that irritates the back of your tongue and gets stuck in your teeth. How can someone sit there with a straight face speaking of a contested convention when he fired a large chunk of his campaign staff?
When the math isn't there, no amount of demagoguery will change a thing, and he'll make it almost impossible to unite the party when we need it most.
What happens when Hillary wins the contested convention?

You'd think after 240 years people would know that the US does not have, never has had, national elections. In the primary, states elect delegates and they vote in the nominating convention. In the general, states elect electors who vote in the electoral college. All of the voting is at the state level.

So if Iowa wants to hold a caucus, Wisconsin wants an open primary, and Maine wants a closed primary, that is the state's choice. There's nothing "unfair" about it.

As for superdelegates, the DNC is a political organization, not a constitutional one. They can run their nominating convention any way they choose, and they choose to have a group of party insiders as at-large voters to act as a firewall against an unfortunate nomination (e..g., McGovern). Again, rules of the party, well known, been in place for decades. Incidentally, the best way to win over party insiders is probabaly not by pissing off party insiders...

I'm all for Bernie fighting to the very end of the voting at the convention, so long as he then lends full-throated support to the nominee and doesn't slink away grumbling and shaking his fist if his strategy doesn't work. Let all the voters vote, let him try to woo superdelegates right up until the first convention ballot.

And I also think he should avoid attacking the other Democratic candidate. Stick to the issues he really cares about: income inequality, healthcare, college tuition, etc. Leave others out of it. Don't hand Donald Trump a nice anti-Clinton sound bite, while trying to beat her for the nomination. Trump is gleefully looking for them, you know.

    4. Anonymous5:27 AM

Oh bullshit 6:56. Clinton conceded on June 7th, 2 days after the last primary and following a meeting with Diane Feinstein and Barack Obama at which she was given things in return for conceding - Obama pay off her campaign debt, a prime time speech at the convention, platform planks, and the Sec of State position. They bought her off. She was a 20 X bigger asshole to Obama during the primaries than Sanders has been to her. Her price is just lower than Sanders.

And by the way, it's intensely rude to start out an answer by saying "No." like you're talking to a dog instead of "I disagree." A bad habit and a sign of a narcissist.

5:27 - no. Your own comment validates what I wrote. I don't agree that all that was bargained for in June--just the campaign debt from the legit sources U've read.

This is a Free Speech matter. The "super" delegates are people -- many of them are quite ordinary people. To suggest that their membership in the party precludes their right to voice support for a candidate is a nonstarter. And that's exactly what Senator Sanders is demanding, that these people who have put career-level efforts into the Democratic Party be ordered (by no authority that exists) not to voice their preference for a candidate before the First Ballot at the Convention. Considering that this is a political party's internecine process we're talking about, it's simply not going to happen. The policy of giving the party a role in decisions like candidate selection didn't spring up overnight (although it hasn't been that long since the McGovern debacle that drives us to this point), and the unbound delegation has nearly unanimous support among people who are active in the Democratic Party. It may make things difficult for an "independent" seeking the nomination against an auspicious candidate with strong, lifelong party ties, but that is by design, and one of the reasons the Democratic Party has a consistent identity and is not simply a "democratic free-for-all".

...But there’s a strange phenomenon happening on the Democratic side this year. Bernie’s voters aren’t going away.

I feel the Bern. I voted for Senator Sanders and I’m proud to support him. But, we have to be honest: barring some unlikely, earth shattering, (and it would probably have to be supernatural) event, Hillary Clinton will win the Democratic nomination. I believe she will be a great candidate. I believe she will be a great President. I’m with her.

That said, ignore the trend of backing the winner! You should still vote for Bernie!

    Bernie can still win.

No. No. I’m not contradicting myself. Bernie isn’t going to win the nomination. But there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and Bernie could end up with more power and influence than the eventual President, even still.

    Bernie’s Bad End
    By PAUL KRUGMAN
    MAY 2, 2016

This is really depressing: Sanders claiming that there will be a contested convention, and suggesting that the nomination fight was rigged. Can someone tell Bernie that he’s in the process of blowing his own chance for a positive legacy?

.... What we’re getting instead is an epic descent into whining. He dismissed Clinton victories driven by black voters as products of the conservative Deep South; he suggested that his defeat in New York was unfair because it was a closed primary (you can argue this case either way, but requiring that you identify as a Democrat to choose the Democratic nominee is hardly voter suppression — arguably caucuses are much further from a democratic process); then, with the big loss in the mid-Atlantic primaries,he has turned to a sort of fact-free complaint that any process under which Bernie Sanders loses is ipso facto unfair, and superdelegates should choose him despite a 3 million vote deficit.
