President and First Lady's daughter Malia to attend Harvard. Update!

Courtesy of the New York Times:

Malia Obama, the older daughter of President Obama, plans to attend Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2017, the White House announced on Sunday, waiting until her father leaves office to begin her college career.

Malia’s much-speculated-upon decision, announced in a news release after months of official silence from the White House about her college search process, will make her the latest in a long line of presidential children to attend the elite university in Cambridge, Mass. Both of her parents attended law school there.

“The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school,” the White House said in a statement.

Sure, but can she get into hair and skin school?

Gee both a great President AND a great parent.

There are some people in the world who cannot even do one of those correctly.

The article also points out that Malia will be taking a "gap year" before starting school.

I myself took a gap year after high school, to raise money for college.

Then took another two year gap to raise more money for college.

And then took yet another still ongoing gap during which I got married, had a baby, got divorced, got remarried, got re-divorced, and completely forgot about college.

I assume that Malia will stay a little more focused.

Update: Apparently the racists have started weighing in:

Believe it or not I left off some of the worst ones, though you can see them for yourselves at the link.

Despite all of this nastiness directed at her I predict big things for this young lady.

5:38 -- He probably thinks of himself as Asian, which he says are under-represented. It's a big complaint of students from all parts of Asia, and Asian-Americans. They don't seem to understand that test scores are only part of the equation. Half of many private schools' classes are filled by athletic or musical students whom the coaches and conductors have "starred" for admission. Then there are legacies. It leaves not that much room for the rest of the applicant pool.
Of course, Malia Obama could have gotten into any college. Her high school education has already provided her with more knowledge and discipline that many other applicants. She seems like a positive, well-disciplined young woman who would be an asset in any classroom.

These mouth breathers are foul -- angry, resentful, frustrated. They have many valid economic reasons to be, and some non-valid racist "reasons," but their pain is not the fault of Malia Obama.

Actually taking a gap year is common in the UK and you don't have to be royal or rich to take it.
1st grade in the UK begins at 5 years old (it begins at 6 years old in the US) so they graduate from high school at a younger age and some opt for the gap year.

  2. Unlike you and I, it appears that Malia needn't worry about how to pay for college. It makes a stunning difference.

My own sons understood the pure simple freedom of graduating from university without crippling debt. I didn't have to carp, or say a single word on the subject--they'd heard plenty from their friends.

    1. I worked during college to pay for it. Because of that I had to take a lighter load and it took five years to get my bachelors. But this is when tuition was still affordable. I think 12 units cost me $120, not including books. I bought used books or used the ones in the library when I could. My parents helped the first year or two but after that I made enough money working nights or during the summer to pay for my college.

Those days are long gone. But they shouldn't be. No child should be denied college because of money. Nor should any student or their family be put into decades of crushing debt to pay for it.

Notice you cannot refinance student loans like you can refinance your house or other loans. And the interest rates are higher.

The financial industry are parasites sucking the life out of our future generations through student debt.

I urge American students to go to Slovenia and go to college for FREE. They offer classes in English and welcome American students.

    2. Way back right after President Obama was elected the first time, CNN featured a nice little article about the Obamas setting up a swing set for the girls in the White House back yard.

The comments were so horrifying that I actually called the Secret Service in regard to a comment that said something to the effect that the only swinging those two little n****s should be doing was from a tree. (The comment was pulled, so apparently CNN noticed something very wrong).

I was horrified that someone could express such murderous hate and rage toward innocent little children, let alone any other human being.

As far as I can tell, children of former presidents only receive SS protection until age 16. Hopefully the girls will have other security available.

From an email from Barack Obama (Organizing for Change):

"We've come a long way since 2009, when we were losing 800,000 jobs a month and unemployment was on its way to 10 percent. Now, unemployment is 5 percent. In 2015, the auto industry had its best year ever. Over the past six years, America has created 14.4 million new jobs, including nearly 900,000 new manufacturing jobs after a decade of industry decline.

"For the first time ever, more than 90 percent of Americans have health insurance. And in every single month since I signed the Affordable Care Act into law, American businesses have created jobs right here in the U.S. -- for a record 73 straight months of private-sector job growth.

"Since I took office, we've cut our reliance on foreign oil by more than half, and we've tripled the power we generate from wind. America now generates 30 times more solar power than we did in 2009, and we are leading the world in the fight against climate change. That is progress."

As a former college professor I can tell you that many if not most students would benefit from a gap year. At 18 did you really know what you wanted to do? (I didn't.) And because of the Affordable Care Act, they can now take it and have health insurance. We had an awful lot of kids in the 70s and 80s we called "health insurance students"- only reason to be there was to stay on parent's policy.

    4. I was 17 when I started college and declared a major right off and stuck to it the entire time. Yes, very unusual. It did take me five years to get my degree because I had to take a lighter load in order to work to pay for registration and books. Lucky for me back then it was affordable and I could live with my parents and have free use of a car. So I graduated without any student debt and got a job in my chosen profession straight out of college.

I never had a gap year. I'm enjoying my gap years now. It's called retirement.

I've gone to school and worked ever since I was 16. I always took supplemental courses in summer school, back when you could do that. And even in the few months between high school graduation and the start of college I worked part time.

So for the first time, in my retirement, I am not working. And it feels wonderful. I am really enjoying life like I never have before. No one tells me what to do, I have no deadlines I don't impose on myself and I am free to choose my activities and set my own schedules. I think my body loves it more as now I can enjoy a natural sleep pattern with no alarms to wake me up.

    3. The idea that blacks are intellectually inferior seems to be a given among certain groups of persons, but it's not true. I was accepted at the University of GA in 1971 and earned my degree in three years. Some of my classmates didn't think I was intellectually inferior because they asked for my assistance in understanding course material, and I freely gave it. The same thing happened in graduate school. I went on to teach high school for 33 years, retiring in 2009 due to health issues. Not once on my job did an administrator ever hint that I didn't know the material I was teaching. They were impressed at the level of knowledge I displayed about subject matter in the classroom. I passed all of my teacher certification tests with high scores the first time while some had to take their tests multiple times. Race is not an accurate indicator of one's level of intelligence, work ethic, propensity to commit acts of violence, morality, etc., and anyone who thinks it is has simply spent his/her life in a closed, sheltered environment.

Malia was accepted to Harvard because of Obama's coattails.

Sarah Palin's daughter went to Penrose and doesn't have a giant student debt. She finished Penrose. Bristol has a profitable and successful career after Penrose.

Does Malia own her own paid off house, cars, trucks and boats?

      What are you smoking?

Bristol DID NOT EARN A DAMN THING.

Her "paid off . . . house, cars, trucks, boats" were paid for by her mother's LLC's and by donors to SarahPAC (which now, in case you haven't checked) is broke.

Bristol dropped out of high school. Penrose is an "academy" for high school dropouts where they are coached and tutored and coached and tutored until they can pass the GED exam. At best, she's a high school grad . . . which counts for almost nothing any longer.

Please explain to us Bristol's "profitable and successful career:" a failed "reality" show; a ghostwritten book that she can't even give away; a one-year gig as a "abstinence spokesman" until the scam Candie's Foundation realized she's screwing everything in sight; hawking "weight-loss shakes" and "subscription boxes" on her Instagram page.

Malia is a graduate of Sidwell Friends, a very competitive school in DC that places most of its graduates in Ivy or West Coast Ivy universities.

Bristol has done nothing except post fish-lip selfies and collect child support payments.

In five years, Malia Obama will be a Harvard grad with a mountain of very lucrative job offers.

In five years, Bristol still will be a high-school dropout single mother of two (or more) children, posting her selfies, trying to look like Kim Kardashian, looking for another trial husband, driving her 15-yr-old paid-off truck once a week to Dr. Jack MeOff's office.

      Delete
    2. No Malia does not own her own home, cars, trucks and boats - she is still in high school. I imagine that when she does enter the work force after college she won't waste her money on "toys". Bristol hasn't "done" anything. It was all given to her. If her mother wasn't Sarah Palin, do you really think Bristol would have been on DWTS? Would anyone have looked twice at her for a reality show? No. She would have just been another pregnant high school girl in Alaska.

Gap are cut for more thinner framed gals, no way they'd fit with their thunder thighs and oddly short hips and legs. They're built more for Wrangler or Duluth Trading than Gap.

Bristol Palin seems to take a gap year from her abstinence only birth control every so often.

Ha! But a gap year is a year when one serves the community or is involved in somethings meaningful. I doubt barstool's baby making factory or "working" for free on her back qualifies. Lol

I understand she is an amazing student who makes great grades and shows enthusiasm for a bright future. And, her parents took advantage of incredible schools for their daughters. Sidwell is a no-joke education. I always wondered, given the Palin’s wealth, why did they not use some of that money to educate their children in the best competitive schools they could afford?

because they are all too stupid to attend secondary education in any form.

    2. The Palins appear not to value education at all.

If any of Sarah Palin's children had much native intelligence, they would buck that trend and go to college. But intelligence is a function of genetics combined with raising a child from birth in a nurturing and stimulating environment. All of the Palin children got the short end of the stick, not just little Trig.

The Obama children were much more fortunate, both genetically and environmentally. There's no comparison with the Palin family--just contrast.

I'm African-American and I attended a school that didn't use affirmative action (they didn't need to; as they had always admitted students from other ethnic and racial backgrounds)(. The white kids still griped and complained about how their friend/cousin/brother/enemy didn't get into the school because affirmative action. And if you asked their friend/cousin,etc, or even THEIR GPA or test scores, it was inevitably .2-.5 lower than mine. The response? But still.
White superiority is so ingrained in the minds of some that no amount of evidence will surmount it.

Join the club, I graduated early at 15, got a 1600 on my SATs and somehow everyone thought my scholarship was because I was Native American.

Not only minorities. I scored 770 on my math SAT and then 98% on my math GRE. I went on to a successful thesis and post-doc. When I was hired for my present job, some people said openly, although not quite to my face, she was only hired because she's a woman.

I wonder if ANY of $carah's offspring would have been admitted to Sidwell, and if so, would they have graduated.

I'm glad that Malia will be starting college after her father is out of office. The first year is always a challenge and she will be able to face it without the constant glare of the media and the pressure of being the sitting President's daughter.

Both of the Obama daughters have dealt with unconscionable levels of criticism and hatred during the last 4 years, but have still somehow maintained a dignity and grace admirable in people twice their ages. The President and First Lady have done a wonderful job in raising two responsible and compassionate young ladies.

I have no doubt that Malia and Sasha will accomplish great things in their lives and continue to do the Obama name proud.

Well done, Malia, President and First Lady Obama and Mrs Robinson. What an honor she's bestowed on your family as a reward for all your hard work. Good Parenting is the most difficult job on earth, they don't come with manuals.

I'm so proud of this family, not one incident of poor behavior, we watched these girls grow into the amazing young women they are.

Ignore the twits and tweets, those people could step in it and never realize all they're good for is fertilizer, and only if they mature.

    Congratulations.

I am glad they kept their daughters out of the spotlight as much as possible. God, the racist are evil. None of their business and they have to have a go of it. And worst of it is that they can't spell.
