California Catholics upset about a bill which would no longer allow them to discriminate against gays. Oh the humanity!

Courtesy of the National Catholic Register:

Catholic and other Christian educational institutions in California face the loss of existing protections that allow them to carry out their educational mission in line with their religious principles, due to a new bill working its way through the California Legislature.

The Golden State’s bishops have opposed the bill as both a violation of the Church’s religious liberty and an attack on poor students.

State Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, the author of S.B. 1146, has argued that the bill closed a “loophole” that allows religious-based institutions of higher learning to discriminate against homosexual and transgender students, thanks to existing religious exemptions from state and federal non-discrimination statutes. The bill affects all institutions of higher learning in California accepting public funding, either directly from the state or through students.

“California has established strong protections for the LGBTQ community, and private universities should not be able to use faith as an excuse to discriminate and avoid complying with state laws,” Lara explained in an April statement to constituents about the bill, which has the backing of the LGBT lobby group Equality California.

Apparently the bill has already passed the senate and is now headed toward the assembly.

Gee what is this country coming to when Christian schools can no longer hate on the gays while hiding behind their holy book?

You know didn't the Pope JUST ask the Catholics to stop being such dicks to the LGBT community?

Why, yes he did.

Catholics tend to be jerks to more than just gay people but then I think the biggest jerks of them all is a toss up between the Mormons and the Southern Baptists.

I agree. I can't make heads or tails of what he's saying. Where does he come up with this crap?

More nuanced Gryphen, they can continue to discriminate, they just won't be given state money to do so. And that's why they are up in arms - it's hitting the bishops in the pocketbook where it really hurts.

Gee, I wonder if the California bishops have paid any attention to Pope Francis' apology to the LBGT community. Or if they pay any attention to the New Testament.

Because they've done such an exemplary job keeping homersexuals out of the priesthood?

So for the Catholic clergy, the students cannot be members of the LGBT community and be protected from discrimination, BUT it's ok for Catholic gay pedophile priests to molest young boys repeatedly over many years and not be put in jail..... And they had no problem when former Boston archbishop Bernard Law who covered up the actions of the pedophile Catholic priests in that city, was actually PROMOTED to archpriest of one of Rome's four papal basilicas, and its most magnificent: Santa Maria Maggiore, the first church dedicated to Mary.
So in their eyes, a Catholic priest can not only be gay but be a pedophile, but a student in one of their Catholic schools cannot have their rights protected just because they identify as being LGBT..... And they call themselves CHRISTIAN?

I watched the movie Spotlight last weekend. It was about the team of very tenacious reporters from the Boston Globe that broke the pervert priests story. It was very interesting. That team broke this story wide open and laid it out for all to see.

The Catholic so called church? What a bunch of lying assholes and hypocrites!

I agree totally. Wanna teach religion? Go right ahead, but don't accept one red cent of taxpayer's money.

Imagine a government deciding to enforce acceptance of all humans over mythology, superstition, and religion!

As long as our Constitution exists as it does, thinking of that is a waste of time.

Sometimes it seems the greatest generation hates the boomer generation. I base this on the facts. For 70 years back look at the taxation, ss, medicare benefits, voting patterns, wars, life lost, And then we have today. Majority of boomers have lost their life, money, health and livelyhood due to the great american sale out and global grove greed policy directly coming from The Republican Party of 7o years aka prior democrat ...o the spin....and so? a hand full of ugly dick taters that want to own and control their selfish world of hate......boomers, the generation that was bamboozled by the greatest generation.

People outside just don't get it. If gay students are allowed in, then the priests will have a huge amount of competition for their sexual encounters. So allowing them in is simply out of the question.

Although this article appeared in a Catholic newspaper, this bill is supported by other religious groups. The evangelical groups want this bill passed, too. I've had enough of the hate coming from within my former church but Pope Francis still has my support.

"Catholics," "students," and "dicks" probably shouldn't be used in the same sentence. Just sayin'. Catholics are the ones who put the "pedophile" connotation to the term "gay."

If the laws in this country conflict with the catholic church doctrines, then maybe they should just leave the country? AT LEAST they should be paying taxes for being involved in politics.

Years ago, when our son was 2, we attended a Catholic wedding. Upon seeing the priest walking down the aisle, our son loudly said, "Why is that boy wearing a dress?" Why indeed.

  17. Are they that blind to themselves? For centuries the Catholic church was the place where gays went to have a decent life with a lot of power and respect. The world finally woke up to the sham when the victims of their abuse complained and were finally heard.
They are just upset their world is crumbling-- because of their own misdeeds. Not so rich anymore due to the huge payout$$. Some still respect them. Not me. Not most of the world I would think.

Catholics in high places behaving badly.

Twin Cities Archbishop Had Social Relationship with Convicted Priest http://www.churchmilitant.com/news/article/archbishop-had-social-relationship-with-ex-priest

" MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL (ChurchMilitant.com) - Evidence is surfacing that Minneapolis-St. Paul archbishop John Nienstedt was a practicing homosexual who had an ongoing relationship with convicted ex-priest Curtis Wehmeyer, and Vatican officials tried to keep it a secret.

Archbishop Nienstedt was head of the archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis during the child sex abuse scandal of defrocked priest Curtis Wehmeyer. Wehmeyer is currently serving time after being convicted of molesting three boys. The archdiocese itself became the first in the nation's history to be criminally prosecuted by the state, but it dropped all six charges of child endangerment on July 20 after reaching a settlement with the archdiocese."

Read the rest. It gets worse. Clear cut coverup and obstruction of justice and ILLEGAL evidence destruction was ordered by the man sent by the pope from the Vatican to investigate. What exactly were they trying to hide?

The former Archbishop was having sex with this child raping priest, whom he was supervising, and not reporting to the police or removing from the church. They'd only known he was a repeat offender for about a decade or so.

Archdiocese knew of priest's sexual misbehavior, yet kept him in ministry http://minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2013/09/clergy-abuse/

"This wasn't the first time Wehmeyer had been in trouble. Top archdiocese leaders knew of Wehmeyer's sexual compulsions for nearly a decade but kept him in ministry and failed to warn parishioners, according to canon lawyer Jennifer Haselberger, who resigned in April, and dozens of other interviews and documents.

A memo written in 2011 obtained by MPR News from police shows the former vicar general – the top deputy of the archdiocese – did not want parish employees to know about Wehmeyer's past.

"At every step of the way, this could have been prevented," Haselberger said. "This is just failure after failure after failure after failure."
