Ohio gun shop owner shot and killed while teaching a gun safety course.

Courtesy of the Guardian:

Authorities say the owner of an Ohio gun shop who was teaching a concealed carry class was fatally shot in the neck by a student who accidentally fired a weapon.

The (Cincinnati) Enquirer reported that the shop owner, 64-year-old James Baker, was shot on Saturday while students practiced weapon malfunction drills.

The Clermont County sheriff’s office said about 10 people were taking the class at the time at KayJay Gun Shop in Monroe Township, about 25 miles south-east of Cincinnati.

Baker died at the scene. The student who fired the weapon was not immediately identified.

According to the gun shop’s website, the concealed carry class included basic pistol safety instruction, shooting range sessions and a review of Ohio gun laws.

I will assume that this student failed the course. But hey, at least he survived it.

Sorry to be so flip, but anybody who thinks that owning a gun keeps them safe does not really understand guns.

Guns end lives, they do not protect lives.

If you want to be safe you keep guns as far away from yourself and your family as possible, install some good locks on the doors and windows, if you are really concerned install an alarm system, and then to top it all off get a good dog.

There, now you infinitely safer than you would be with a gun in your house.

Sure it's a lot less macho than waving around a firearm at every bump in the night, but it is a hell of a lot better than going to jail for shooting somebody in a drunken rage or attending the funeral of a loved one who was accidentally killed by your totally inadequate safety measure.

With you all the way, Gryph. And what does it say when the person teaching gun safety is shot, which happens a lot? Guns kill. Period.

What was that about "A SPECIAL KIND OF STUPID?"

From the report: ". . . while students practiced weapon malfunction drills. "

So -- this idjit was having students practice clearing a malfunction with live ammo? I'm an old soldier with 28 years in uniform. The military services use DUMMY AMMO for every type of training. You are issued live ammo only on the range.

And not even then. The ROTC does not use live ammo due to lead toxin concerns, even ON the firing range. Think about that. Military officers teaching a college course to prepare future officers to lead troops onto battle do not feel it necessary to use live ammo. But so.e 64 y o yahoo, with more butt than brains decides to teach a one day class to all comers with a bit of $ using it. Special kind of stupid about covers it.

      Evidence of multiple mistakes.

      1. Failure to maintain proper range discipline. All weapons should be pointed down range unless...

      2. Obvious failure to properly train the shooter in muzzle discipline.

      3. Obvious failure to maintain control and awareness of all individuals and weapons in the class.

When we had someone break into our barn we panicked and got ADT security wired in our house as we live 45 minutes from our closest sheriff.
The installer told us we already had the best defense against house break ins with our three VERY large dogs. He said no one in their right mind would break in with three sets of extra large canine teeth waiting.
We kept the service a couple of years then canceled. We keep the signs up and sometimes that is all you need along with a big dog.

  4. Keeping a gun around your house protects you from being shot in pretty much the same way that keeping explosives around the house protects you from getting blown up.

If you don't want to be shot or blown up, it doesn't take a fucking genius to make sure your habitat is free of guns and explosives.

A guy who sells guns was shot to death by someone to whom he was teaching gun safety...

Maybe you believe the police could have eventually saved some of these people. Maybe you believe these intruders meant the victims, who defended themselves, no harm. Maybe you believe in the tooth fairy.

Just like the a$$holes in the 1960s who used to lecture about how seatbelts kill.

"It's better to be thrown free, especially if you are unconscious and the car catches fire."

Used to hear chit like that all the time.

    2. No not in the tooth fairy, but in the fact that having a good dog and an adequate security system would have been more effective in 99 out of a hundred similar situations.

I also know that most burglaries happen when the home owners are not at the residence, and that home invasions are rare and often have to do with drugs on the premises and/or a large number of easy to sell firearms in the home.

I also know that if you did a side by side comparison of the number of accidental shootings in a year vs the number of times a gun had been used to protect life or property, that the number of accidental shootings would bury the self defense data under a mountain of dead children, crippling injuries, and wounded bystanders.

That's not what I believe that's what I know, and I also know that is why the NRA is fighting so hard to keep the CDC from studying the real impact of gun violence in this country.

Because they fucking know that too.

    3. I've had a pair of sisters stalk me for over 2 years now. I'm a veteran and I don't feel the need to buy a gun. I did better, I bought security cameras. For around $200, you get 6 cameras and a recording/storage devise. That has been enough to keep them away. If god forbid, they break in and kill me in my sleep then at least the cops know who to look for ...

I have 4 very vocal boxers. They alert to issues with their smarts. They don't bark at any little bunny crossing the lawn. No one messes with them and that is smart. If pushed to protect they will, and the psi pressure is one of the strongest. No guns. Dogs!

"“If some of those wonderful people had guns strapped right here — right to their waist or right to their ankle — and one of the people in that room happened to have it and goes ‘boom, boom,’ you know, that would have been a beautiful sight folks,” "of active shooter incidents between 2000 and 2013, 21 active shootings were stopped by unarmed citizens, while just one was stopped by an armed civilian."<THIS!

For a novice, the guys got great aim. The bullet went through the wall and accidentally hit the gun shop owner, gun safety teacher and room temperature worm farm. How sad. I wonder how many guns he's sold in his career that were used to kill or maim people?
